I asked if we could sit in the booth and was told it was normally for 3 but we could have it. This made our night and on a busy Saturday night I would have understood if we were refused but I was impressed at the service in accommodating our request. The food was outstanding. I would recommend the wasabi lamb and the salmon teriyaki. Some portions are on the small side for the price but that is pretty standard for up market Japanese and what you do get is really lovely. I've eaten here for five years, probably 30 times and normally have a fantastic dinner. The crab snowball dumplings, the lightly seared tuna and the black cod are all fantastic. Service is friendly and helpful. The interior is modern white and gold though the stylish contemporary chairs could be a bit more comfortable. The white wine by the glass is a bit limited. I would like a decent glass of white chardonnay, the best on offer being a reasonably priced pinot grigio. Although the decor is starting to look a little worn in places it paled into insignificance when the food arrived. We had a mixture of sushi and tempura; simply put....exquisite. I personally prefer the atmosphere in Clapham but the food is equally good. There were of us on this occassion in the Charlotte Street branch and we certyainly went to town, ordering LOTS of food and a bottle of wine.Because we booked for 6.30 and were able to benefit from the early bird offer, the bill came to only £109 which I think is really good value. Also, we had originally booked for 2 btu the staff moved some tables around to accomodate the 3rd person without any problems, depsite it being quite busy. The size is perfect, it doesn't feel like you're one of a million diners and the ambience is just right with the backlit floral wall and low lighting (although the staff didn't seem to be sure whether to dim or raise the lights).
The service was impeccable, the staff were very friendly and helpful while they also kept coming back to top up our glasses.
We didn't stray too far from the beaten track (Salmon Teriyaki and Steamed Cod and Miso Ponzu) but both meals were fantastic, cooked to perfection.
