Thirty Six by Nigel Mendham at DUKES LONDONVery good 4.5 on the toptable dealMy friends and I went for the Sunday lunch on the toptable deal. As my friends were relieved to see, this was hearty without being stodgy. The 3 courses were beautifully presented. The service was impeccable. My first two courses were very well executed (two fish dishes), but the third - chocolate pavé - was the highlight, accompanied by salted caramel ice cream with a form of honeycomb hazelnut crunch that worked brilliantly. Overall very highly recommended. Ambience low key and understated.12/05/2013 00:00:00Perfect Lunch TimeI had lunch with a work colleague using the deal of 2 courses with a glass of prosecco for £25. The dining room is light an airy and the service was very attentive without being stifling. The choice on the set menu wasn't huge but the food was outstanding, I had braised pork neck for main and I could have eaten it with a spoon.
Eventhough we used the deal I didn't at all feel we were treated as such and had the amouse bouche and petit four in addition to our meal, I would definitely go back.10/05/2013 00:00:00Great girly lunchMy friend and I went to 36 for lunch and had a really lovely experience. We were there for several hours and did not feel hurried out of the place at all (even though by the time we left they were setting up for dinner!) Food was excellent with really lovely little amuse bouches to whet the appetite. Service was great, very attentive but not too much. The deal was excellent at £25 for 2 courses and a prosecco - which turned in to several! We will definitely return.04/05/2013 00:00:00We went to Thirty Six forWe went to Thirty Six for a Sunday lunch, and to celebrate a birthday. As usual, the service and food was first class.28/04/2013 00:00:0010 out 10 for ThirtySixI am by nature one of those diners that if they can see the plate when the food is served then I already feel cheated but not at ThirtySix. We went for the three course option, which comes in at a respectable £ 60 per head (not bad for Central London), which quickly became six courses as they brought "extras" in between the "mains", plus what can only be described as a Tequila Slush Puppy. The food was absolutely fanstastic and the staff were very attentive and friendly.
As it was an anniversary dinner we did push the boat out a little with drinks and wine so the final bill did come to quite a bit more than £ 120 we could have paid but even then we felt we had had our moneys worth.27/04/2013 00:00:00Amazing value!!!!We booked the 3 course dinner and a glass of prossecco for £48 for 4 of us on a Saturday evening. It was AMAZING value!
The food was plentiful, incuding nice little extras (canapes with the pre dinner prossecco, an amuse bouche, palate cleansing granita before dessert, coffee and petit fours)
The restaurant was a little quiet only 15 guests on a Sat evening, but that was nice for us as we were able to chat and catch up without interuption.
The food is very good quality quite foody but really delicious, our only criticism is that it could have been a bit hotter, but presentation was superb.
Service was warm and friendly witout being intrusive.
My advice is get there quickly before everyone finds it and the prices shoot up!20/04/2013 00:00:00Lovely Lunchtime secretFantastic staff, so polite. Great value set lunch which included two very nice glasses of a very good Beaujolais. Ham Hock terrine was beautiful. Main course Bass was perfectly cooked and Rhubarb dessert delicious.
Pleasant ambiance in a nicely decorated dining room. A real find...will be coming again and highly recommended.17/04/2013 00:00:00SuprisedI booked this restaurant for my Girlfriends birthday afer reading other reviews and recommendations. Well 36 did not disappoint. The 3 courses were delicious and both of us agreed that the service was outstanding. We will definitely be coming back sometime soon.13/04/2013 00:00:00Excellent valueFood extremely good beautifully presented and a very pretty room13/04/2013 00:00:00Fine dining and excellent value.Exceedingly fine meal and excellent value. We had the tasting menu with the specially selected wines. The staff were charming, knowledgable and unobtrusive. The food was perfectly cooked and imaginative, without being excessively off-piste. The turbot was especially fine. This is Michelin-starred quality dining and everyone should go before it gets discovered.12/04/2013 00:00:00Great lunchHad a really lovely meal here on a Friday afternoon-the food was lovely and beautifully presented, the staff were utterly professional but also really added to the experience with their warmth and attentive service. The only slight thing I could pick on is the decor could do with a little updating, it did feel a little old-fashioned. But i would still highly recommend it.12/04/2013 00:00:00Superb mealFirst time at this quiet spot tucked away at the back of St. James's. A great meal with two very nice glasses of wine included, a good option for the veggie and perfect service. Will be back again soon!!11/04/2013 00:00:00Surprisingly good experienceI chose Thirty Six by Nigel Mendham at Dukes London, based on recommendations. When I got to the hotel I was a bit dubious. The restaurant is not easy to find but we had a great dining experience. The room is nothing special in terms of architecture and decor, but the atmosphere is quiet and serene: a plus for a London restaurant. The food was amazingly good and the wine list very nice.11/04/2013 00:00:00Truly memorable eveningEverything about our meal was wonderful; the service was impecable but still warm; great menu choices; food cooked to perfection - I had the duck which was divine. We had such a relaxed evening and we'd definitley recommend this restaurant.06/04/2013 00:00:00Delicious! We love ThirtyDelicious! We love Thirty Six by Nigel Mendham at Duke's Hotel for many reasons. It has an exclusive ambiance and delivers both an experience and food of outstanding quality and value. Highly recommended for a rendez-vous with friends and/or partners. The champagne lounge next door serves up stunning cocktails and ideal for a pre-dinner drink. Shall return soon.05/04/2013 00:00:00Love Dukes HotelExcellent kitchen. Tried the 2 courses for £48 and loved it. It was more of a four course. The mushroom cappuccino was delicious, the scallop starter was light and the venison was outstanding.
The staff were polite and friendly, but not overwhelmingly so. Attentive, but one still retains privacy.
Definitely going back.
Of course, champagne cocktail after dinner at the hotel's bar was a bonus.05/04/2013 00:00:00Lovely little hidden gemI trawled through a long list of restaurants for our Easter Sunday lunch, nothing was saying "choose me" until I hit on thirty six, I can't say why, but I just thought, yes, this is the one, I was right, trust your instincts, we were very, very happy with our choice, this restaurant and the chef deserves to be better known, the food was lovely, the dining room was warm and inviting and the waiting staff could not have been more friendly or attentive, all in all, a very enjoyable Sunday lunch.31/03/2013 00:00:00Been before and returned a second t( continued from the title) As good as the first time we came. Easter Sunday was quite quiet as presumably most folks were away. But....it was a great lunch. Its a laid back sort of place which is what we like. We'll come back for dinner next time.31/03/2013 00:00:00ExcellentThirty Six was an experience from start to finish. Excellent service, gorgeous food and although we treated ourselves to a pricey bottle of wine, there was a good selection of far cheaper options.
The only problem was that there were only 6 other diners Si the atmosphere lacked a bit.
Would fully recommend it.30/03/2013 00:00:00Lovely lunchGreat value 2 course lunch. Mackerel starter was delicious as was the neck of pork main. Room a little uninspiring but delightful and friendly service30/03/2013 00:00:00lunchMy girlfriend and I had lunch here mid-week, taking advantage of a toptable offer (2 courses and 2 glasses of wine for £26 or thereabouts. The food was very good, and very difficult to fault. Service was polite, efficient and the right amount of friendly. The two glasses of wine were well chosen, and sizeable for lunch. But I should add that the wine we were served was Argentinian, and not the billed French. A trifling matter really, because the wine was decent enough. The amuse bouche of white asparagus and truffle foam was lovely, the bread was excellent, and the addition of the macarons to finish was nice. An absolute steal, and an experience I'd gladly repeat26/03/2013 00:00:00PerfectThirty-Six sits quietly in the lower-ground floor of Dukes hotel, almost waiting to be "discovered" by diners. Four of us enjoyed the toptable lunchtime offer of 2 courses plus wine for £29. What bliss!
I had the following:
Goat’s cheese flan, variations of beetroot, celery sorbet
Sweet potato fondant, puree, spinach & ricotta samosa, korma spices
Rhubarb and custard: Ginger crumble, sorbet, bourbon vanilla
With added amuse bouche of brocolli soup.
All of the above courses tasted even better than they sound (with special mention to the soup) and all paired wonderfully with the selected wines.
Mr Mendham already has a Michelin star to his name. It will not be long before Thirty-Six gives him his second.22/03/2013 00:00:00FabulousFantastic set lunch deal. Food was truly delicious, beautiful amuse bouche, and perfect cooking of other dishes. Only 3 choices on set menu, but that forces you to choose new dishes, mackerel starter and pork main course were excellent. Service was great, formal but friendly. Only downside was there were only 2 tables occupied , can't understand why, get down there, perfect for business lunches and for a catch up lunch.
Only criticism would be that if you pay £12 for a gin and tonic I expect it to come with lime not lemon and ice, though when asked a glass of ice with tongs immediately appeared.15/03/2013 00:00:00Lovely FoodGreat for a special occasion, food is impressive and lovely comfortable setting.15/03/2013 00:00:00Classic venueThe English boutique hotel is alive and kicking. Quality top table menu, nice wine list.10/03/2013 00:00:00Delicous food, well worth a visitWent here for my wedding anniversary and had read the good reviews and wasn't dissapointed. The food was excellent we had the taster menu so it was 8 courses with wines to match. The portions are small because of the number of courses but exquisite. The restuarant was quite quiet for a Saturday night but got busier later as we had an early booking. The Dukes Hotel that the restaurant is located down a little quiet side street with a busy cocktail bar if you wanted to have drinks there first. The service was excellent with very knowledgeble staff who know the wines and food inside out. Would go again for a special occasion if you want delicous, beautifully presented food that won't disapppoint go to Thirty Six.09/03/2013 00:00:00Excellent meal & attentive serviceI find Thirty Six to be a very calming place to spend an evening and it is a lovely place to spend a winter's evening. The service is particularly attentive, welcoming and considerate. This makes it a joy to visit. The menu is highly enjoyable. I have been here three times in as many months and, whilst the menu has not changed in this time, I find it very nice to return to dishes when they are this tasty. You should be aware that the dining room is not large and, being in the basement, there are no views of London. However, if you want a quiet and calm atmosphere for business or pleasure, I cannot recommend this highly enough.07/03/2013 00:00:00A wonderful lunch36 at the Duke is an oasis of calm at the heart of one of the busiest neighbourhood in the capital. It might be a little hard to find, and when you are there you are rewarded by good and inventive food, served by an attentive staff. I had the Smoked Mackerel followed by the Pork and as dessert the Rhubarb and Custard. All very tasty. I will be back to try other dishes. The petit fours served with tea and coffee are delicious. The atmosphere is cosy and warm. Highly recommended.02/03/2013 00:00:00Amazing food, excellent serviceAmazing food, excellent service good value for money.02/03/2013 00:00:00An Excellent Dining ExperienceMy Wife and I were up in London and thought we should take advantage of the top table offer for Lunch
We were not disappointed .. we had the set meal with different wines .. Good honest sized glasses of excellent wine and the quality of the food was exceptional.
If you get the chance go.. we eat in many of the Great restaurants in England and the quality of food and the friendly service we had here would mean that we would recommend this restaurant to any of our friends01/03/2013 00:00:00First class British Fine Dining !First class British Fine Dining offer from Nigel Mendham and the team. Toptable 49GBP for three courses, plus reasonably priced wines by the glass / wine list. Solid starters and amuse bouche were followed up with a mind-blowingly good Venison and Suet Pudding main for myself and a vegetarian dish for the birthday girl Mrs A. Followed in with two deserts - the highlight being the "deconstructed" Tiramasu, and petits fours served on a chilled platter with the words "Happy Birthday" stencilled in chocolate sauce !
All wrapped up in exceptional discrete but attentive service, in a low key but formal setting.
In short an absolute gem, tucked away near Green Park. A must visit for anyone who enjoys reasonably priced fine dining....23/02/2013 00:00:00ExcellentLovely food, beautifully presented, excellent value. A great place to visit if you enjoy fine dining.22/02/2013 00:00:00special treatEnjoyed a lovely dinner last week at Dukes hotel Thirty Six. Beautiful presentation combined with high standard of cooking made it a memorable meal. Would happily return.21/02/2013 00:00:00Nice little hidden gem...Not easy to find at first but its quaintness was quickly appreciated once you have sat down to receive the excellent service and food. Great find.17/02/2013 00:00:00Lunch at Thirty SixFantastic food with great service, a warm welcome on arrival and attention to detail during service. I can't understand why this place isn't busier! We had the Mackerel to start followed by the Chicken and the Dark Chocolate for dessert, everything was delicious and excellent value for money.16/02/2013 00:00:00Outstanding!Tucked away in a beautiful part of London, where the streets were lit by dim lights, this restaurant is beautiful. We opted for the 2 course with a red, and the amuse-bouche before the starters were amazing. Real top-class, michelin star-level food, in my opinion.
Highly recommend the venison and the Jack Dory - these were cooked to perfection.
Would definitely recommend, and go again.15/02/2013 00:00:00Gets even betterThird visit, for a Valentines Day lunch treat.
Wonderful meal.....Fish starter was super.... mackerel, smoked eel and more. Pollock (cooked to perfection) and foraged mushrooms as a main course. Wonderful chocolate pave with banana.
Lovely quiet room and very good service.
Then to the Red Lion just around the corner for a pint of superb London Pride.14/02/2013 00:00:00Brilliant value Sunday mealFabulous food and at a great price. I will be going again.10/02/2013 00:00:00Contemporary British cuisineVery nice experience, updated contemporary take on British cuisine. Nice venison! Salt levels can be a little uneven between garnishes and sauces, but overall very high level of presentation and flavors. Quinoa garnish was over seasoned on one dish, otherwise fabulous food, very pleasant dining experience. Relatively good value wine list for London for a change with nice surprises listed. I would definitely return.07/02/2013 00:00:00We had an excellent meal atWe had an excellent meal at Thirty-Six. The food was delicious and cooked well. All the flavours were distinguishable, well matched and not overwhelmed by sauces. The service was charming and very good. It is a very quiet restaurant with lots of space between tables so nice for talking. A pity that it is a bit out of the way and not better used - it deserves to be.06/02/2013 00:00:00Faultlessaa hidden gem. quiet dining room near green park. immaculate food, presentation and service . every time i eat here i have ended up having 3 courses and a bottle of wine (and amuse bouche etc). never goes over £100 but always feels worth much more. easily michelin quality.
i almost dont want to tell people06/02/2013 00:00:00A gourmet experienceOur visit to Thirty Six was accompanied by some expectations as we had read good reviews beforehand. But we feel the restaurant met our expectations excellently. Service was very good and swift, we were treated to a teaser and a pre-meal course, as well as a glass of Prosecco, and we were at once in the mood for more. After the starter we had another surprise course, accompanied by good portions of excellent meat (venison for my wife, and rib-eye steak for me). They were both succulent and tasty and prepared professionally. We have a pre-dessert course, and ended up with perfectly arranged dessert plates. Accomanied with good wine, this was a meal to remember.02/02/2013 00:00:00DelightfulWe ate dinner at 36 as part of a weekend in London. It was slightly tricky to find (but that was probably us and when we called they explained very clearly how to get there). We cannot fault it in any way. The food was fantastic, the service was attentive but never overly so and the wine was top class. We took advantage of the top table offer which made the whole thing brilliant value. Would definitely eat there again without hesitation and heartily recommend it.02/02/2013 00:00:00Enjoyable dining at DukesHad two courses with a glass of prosecco. Mini loaves were presented to accompany a small appetiser of celeriac and apple veloute, service in a tiny cup. I had a beautifully cooked mackerel with eel slices, and quail eggs cooked to perfection. For main i had a deconstructed chicken pie. The small pearls of sage and onion sauce were delicate. There were two succulent chicken breasts, an oval shaped pastry filled with leg meat, miniscule leeks, dainty onion rings and little potatoes. The service was super and a small tray of apple and toffee macaroons were washed down with the last of the pear flavoured prosecco. As the deal was so good, there was plenty leftover for some vesper martinis in the bar.31/01/2013 16:00:00thirty six great !!!Great deal with top table, food and service great, limited menu but understandable given the deal. Only negative two glasses of wine only a couple quid cheaper than bottle but hay picking holes if I'm honest!!!31/01/2013 16:00:0036 by Nigel Mendham - v good choiceAll the staff were lovely. We were made very welcome and had excellent service throughout. The 3 of us had the 2 courses + prosecco for £25 deal. Everything looked beautiful, & everything tasted lovely, including the celeriac sorbet, an unexpected extra. Two of us had the ham hock terrine and one of us had the goat's cheese starter. We all three had the pollock main.We also each had a glass of wine. These were quite expensive but enjoyed by all of us.
The place itself, including the lounge next to the restaurant, is really very attractive. We will definitely come again, whilst the toptable deal is in operation.30/01/2013 00:00:00very good restaurantBrillant restaurant for sunday lunch very good service27/01/2013 00:00:00must go backOn finding dukes we found the establishment a little off the beaten track.its a shame as it would be fabulous on the main streets.but then on being there and eating you can see that the location is one of the reasons why its so special.
The food was fantastic, couldn't fault it in anyway.the service was superb.the staff were wonderful.
The resturant makes you feel like your wanted and that the staff have time for you with it being of a nice size.I found that other places when its too big they seem only under the pressure with other tables and people...and less time to pay you any attention.I didn't find this here.
The small treats inbetween are a delight to....we would go back in a heart beat.25/01/2013 16:00:00The best food I've ever tasted! This restaurant was recommended to me so I was keen to try it. I have 2 favourite restaurants (Tom Aitken and Club Gascon) and didn't think any restaurant could top these until I ate here. We chose the tasting menu and spent the entire evening oohing over every single mouthful. I have never tasted food as divine. The imagination required to marry every single component of each dish was simply genius. Every morsel had a purpose & the effect was sensational. The service was impeccable & we asked many questions after eating each course and the staff could answer everything and more. This restaurant should be a Mecca for every foodie, a magnet for every romantic couple and a must for groups wanting a classy celebration. Perfection at its best!24/01/2013 16:00:00FantasticI can't believe this place isn't fuller - the whole thing is great, from the moment you sit and eat your canapes and have a glass of wine, to the petit fours at the end of the meal. Just excellent quality, great service and fantastic value for money all round.24/01/2013 00:00:00
