A word from The West House
Biddenden in Kent is home to a small, family-run restaurant. Housed in a 15th Century weaver's cottage, The West House Restaurant is one of only a few restaurants in Kent to hold a Michelin star.
The Good Food Guide said of this Kent restaurant... “Respondents continue in their enthusiasm for Graham Garrett’s cuisine: ‘great intensity of flavours, fabulous textures.’ as one reader put it."

Diner Reviews
  • "We took friends here for an evening meal. We had beetroot, quail and egg n bacon for our starters. My husband wasn't keen on the egg n bacon but everyone else thought theirs was delicious. For mains we had brill, cod, featherblade beef and pig. Everything was beautifully presented and had so much flavour. The desserts were equally as good. We chose the cheese, rhubarb and chocolate mousse. The portions were on the small side so we certainly weren't stuffed after 3 courses. The only negative thing I have to say is that drinks service was a bit slow. Will definitely be going back."

  • "Excellent food, nice relaxed atmosphere. Shame the tasting menu was almost identical to a year ago. Cheese course a bit pricy at £10. The quality of the food means we'd go again."

  • "The food is outstanding but it would be nice if at the beginning they did an amuse bouche rather than the biscuit/scone type nibbles which, although very good, aren't quite an amuse bouche. Everything else is so imaginitive and full of flavour but this would be the icing on the cake."

  • "It has been over a year since I last dined at The West House,(I don't live in the area), but I have now eaten there about twelve times. It is well-worth an hour's drive. This time we lunched here and what a super lunch it was. Beautifully cooked, perfectly seasoned, subtle flavoursome food with a fresh, delicate composition - wonderful. Friendly, rather charming service in attractive surroundings. I shall not leave it so long again before I eat here-a really marvellous place. Love it!"

  • "We were the only people in the restaurant, which felt odd. But neither food nor service was compromised. And we took our time and lingered, without feeling under any pressure. They must have longed us to finish! Food was superb, wines unusual, service gentle but attentive. Outstanding."

  • "We went to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It was a Tuesday and when I booked via top table could only book at 8.15 which gave the impression that the restaurant would be full. There was only one other table eating when we arrived. It was however an excellent evening."

  • "Charming restaurant in quaint village. The food is wonderful as is the wine and beer. The staff are very attentive to your needs and aware that you are there and not just a paying guest. The ambience is relaxed and friendly with a touch of old world charm with open fire and friendly chatter. We shall be back, sooner rather than later."

  • "My fiancé and I went to the West House to celebrate our anniversary and decided to go for the tasting menu with matching wines. We certainly weren't disappointed. Every course was fantastic and the wines went superbly! I cannot recommend this highly enough and we've already been telling anyone who would listen all about it!"

  • "Had a wonderful lunch at the West House Restaurant, Biddenden. We chose from the set lunch menu and would highly recommend the pigs cheeks which just melted in your mouth. The service was excellent and very friendly, and there was a very comfortable atmosphere within the restaurant."

  • "We have been meaning to visit the West House for several years, but being in the same industry it has been so difficult to book in but it was so worth the wait. From the moment we arrived to a warm welcome from Jackie, with the fire blazing & a glass of champagne whilst we studied the menu, we felt totally relaxed. We decided to go for the tasting menu and we loved every dish, on the way home we asked each other which was our favourite and as we talked about each course we decided they were all magnificent and equally wonderful. The presentation, service and the quality of the food were all outstanding and the whole team deserve their accolades under Graham & Jackie's leadership I do know that it won't be years before we return again!"

  • "Probably the best meal of our lives. Stunning food, and great relaxed service. Among all the superb courses two that stood out. We had a starter that was beetroot cooked in a variety of ways, sounds boring but it was delicious and a chocolate dessert that was divine. If you are a fine food fan then this is the restaurant for you."

  • "I had a great time with my wife at The West House, we chose the 6 course taster menu. It was great as there was plenty of gaps for talking between courses and the food was to die for. It was a shame I was driving and the wife does not drink otherwise I would have matched the wine to each course. There was no rush to get the table back which I found nice and also lots of nice touches. A couple of examples being loose tea rather than teabags and all hand made chocolates etc. These go an extra mile to show the detail taken by the staff. I feel great value at £60 for taster without wine each. I will go again!"

  • "For 2 people who love their food and have dined in some wonderful places West House more than holds its own. The vegetarian tasting menu was a revelation which we both preferred to the one containing meat. Very good pace of the dishes arriving and the waiting staff were knowledgeable but unobtrusive. The star of the evening was the beetroot cheesecake - genius and just delicious. All courses were good though its just that this dish was unusual and quirky and tasty and fun!"

  • "What a wonderful evening of delicious food, wine and first class service. You will only know if you too eat at the West House. We want to go again as soon as possible."

  • "My experience in The West House was not great at all. . There were just 2 waitresses looking like they had randomly been asked to serve food to people on that night. They did not have a clue what they were doing. The restaurant claims it has a Michelin Star award.......................Well, I think it is an advertising trick. The food was not that great at all and its definitely overpriced. ( I have dined in a few dozens on Michelin Star restaurants and know exactly what the food should be like). The bill for 2 people was around £180 and that was without being extravagant on wine choice. I would not recommend this place at all unless they overview the menu, carefully choose the staff to serve the food so the quality matches the price."

  • "It was was my partner's birthday just after Christmas and I wanted something a little special to make it an occasion. The West House didn't disappoint. A friendly welcome greeted us, the ambience was intimate but there was also the overriding atmosphere of people enjoying themselves, a perfect balance. We were served the most amazing cheese biscuits, olives and home made bread with in minutes, these along with a lovely glass of bubbly really started the evening off in style. We decided to push the boat out and had the 6 course Taster menu including the wine. We wanted a little extravagance, an experience, each course was an adventure in itself. I couldn't recommend it enough, romantic, fun and a journey all in one."

  • "We had a wonderful lunch and could not fault it-Michelin starred dining at its best. The service was friendly and attentive and every course of the meal was excellent. Lovely extras- hors d'oeuvres, warm bread and yummy chocolates with coffee. We will definitely be returning."

  • "I took my wife to the West House for a birthday lunch and we really enjoyed the relaxed, friendly atmosphere - it felt intimate and special, almost like being in a friend's beautiful home with wooden beams and log burner keeping it cosy. The food was excellent and we chose different dishes for all 3 lunch courses so that we could experience as broad a range of tastes as possible. My wife really enjoyed the venison and my dessert can only be described as 'Christmas on a plate'. What made the experience special was the friendly waiter who made s feel like we were old friends - there was nothing pretentious about this place which made the food and overall experience truly memorable."

  • "On retirement I was given the gift of a dining experience at the West House. We had moved from Scotland back to Kent, this was a treat we had been looking forward to.This is a small and pleasant restaurant with a family team and they made us very welcome from the start, the appetisers were a dream as was each of the three courses we ordered. Very seasonal Venison and Pork followed by two delicious desserts of Chocolate heaven and spicey apple tart washed down with a dram of Calvados .... We were not hurried and enjoyed our meal over a two hour period with attentive and freindly service, we also ordered two bottles of wine from their well stocked and varied cellar, both great wines but the Sancerre won the day for me, devine."

  • "Perfect food cooked with passion, care and attention to detail. Would recommend the West House to everyone and can't fault the food and service. Also the recommended red wine was spot on to my taste."

  • "Booked this restaurant as a 10th anniversary meal for me and my partner, we turned up early, was welcomed by Jake and led to our seats, we weren't rushed and we had time to get comfortable, the food we ordered was amazing and so tasty, and for something that could be classed as minimal was so filling and full of flavour, the service was impeccable and cannot be undervalued for making our night so special."

  • "The restaurant itself felt very warm and cosy. More like a gastro pub atmosphere rather than a typical Michelin starred experience. The service was attentive but not overwhelming. The menu was small but diverse indicating to us that everything was freshly cooked. I ate with 3 girl friends and found that some of the dishes lacked strong flavours to bring the dishes to life. My favourite course was the venison which was extremely tasty and the cottage pie on the side was a stroke of genius. Unfortunately my fish starter and the honey & milk dessert were a little disappointing lacking any meaningful flavour. If there was an opportunity to eat Sunday lunch there I would try it but I won't be going back for a dinner any time soon."

  • "Our meal at the West House was once again excellent. The choices are few for a weekday lunch but I never have trouble finding something I like. All three courses were delicious and the extras - bread, olives, savoury biscuits and a chocolate to finish - were possibly the highlight of the meal."

  • "Absolutely outstanding evening made all the more impressive by the father & son team. Wonderful service from Jake & fabulous food from his Dad. Can't wait to book in again!"

  • "Took my partner their for a birthday meal, just the two of us. We really enjoyed the whole dining experience, the food was exceptional and the price was very good for such a high level of quality. The staff were both welcoming and friendly, the waiter explained every dish clearly and precisely The building is a beautiful very old place set on a pretty countryside high street. Would highly recommend eating here and will return myself as it was worth the 50 mile drive to have dined their."

  • "The night we dined here there was very little other than pork or fish on the menu. As a result the choice was very limited for my wife. Having said that the food was good but not of the standard we were expecting. We've eaten at 3 forks standard restaurants that have been better than this. Front of house was very busy and as a result they weren't very attentive, just direct and efficient. Overall it was good but we wouldn't go back"

  • "The food here was exceptional and could not be faulted. We had the tasting menue with the appropriate wines. We will definitely be back."

  • "Food was brilliant and staff really helpful. Was planning to drive home but then we decided to go for the Taster Menu which included a different wine with each course. Staff went out of their way to find a taxi for us (we live rurally and taxis are usually booked in advance). Really enjoyed whole experience. Was alittle worried before that being a Mitchelin Starred restaurant it would be intimitidating but was very relaxing. More expensive then average night out but you get what you pay for. Already told hubby would like to go back for my birthday!"

  • "It's unusual to feel so comfortable in a restaurant while still having a great fine dining experience. All courses were delicious and service relaxed, but attentive. We've had a fantastic time and we'll definitely come back."

  • "Food was amazing, so full of flavours to get your taste buds going. Felt the 5 course menu was a bit restructive of choice but other menu was fine. Only dish was not as good as expected was the honey cream pudding with honeycomb etc .. Was a bit bland and just loads of cream! The beef and venison were cooked beautifully and just dissolved as they hit your Tongue! Intimate place for a special occasion. Would go there again."

  • "The food was of an extremely high standard, the service informal but attentive and knowledgable. We opted for the 5 course menu and whilst waiting we were given delicious breads, olives and cheese shortbreads. Our favourite dishes were the smoked haddock carpaccio, my sister hadn't swallowed her first bite before uttering the words "bonfire night" this remained her favourite dish of the evening, not surprising when a dish can evoke the senses into recalling a particular time of year, very clever. Then the foie gras, what can I say, the most delicately balanced flavours of rich liver and picked rubarb accompanied with confit duck and sliced gingerbread. Not to be missed; a beautiful restaurant hidden in a tiny picturesque Tudor-style village"

  • "Despite having been going for quite a few years now, this small treasure remains the finest creators of haut cuisine in the county. Never ever disappointed."

  • "I came here for lunch and tried the lunch menu. The food was really good, you would think that you can only do so much with tomato soup but the soup was full of flavour and the cheesy bread to go with it was a nice touch. For the mains I had the fish and once again it was full of flavour, the fish was cooked just right. For dessert the peaches and nice cream was amazing - it a must try. The restaurant is small and had an old pub feel to it - I like that there was no ambience music which makes it easy to talk to each other especially if it's just the two of you. The service was excellent, always polite and the food was served at good intervals, nicely spread out. Overall a very good experience and the lunch menu was very good value as well."

  • "We went for the 5 course taster menu and I have to say that every course was superb. I also liked the fact that, as a taster menu, the portions were suitably sized, well spaced, and served with nicely complimenting wines. The West House has a cosy feel with attentive friendly service. Very enjoyable."
