About The Waterway
The Waterway is a stylish bar and restaurant in Maida Vale, West London. Our menu is predominantly French and Modern European and focuses on delivering classic brasserie dishes. We also have a large, south-facing outdoor terrace that is open throughout the summer period. On the terrace, we offer a light grill menu for an alfresco dining experience by the Grand Union Canal. Lovely setting, the restaurant was empty though...food, service and wine all great

Food was lovely and good friendly service. Second time i've dined here and will keep coming back. Not the cheapest but also not terribly expensive. Highly recommended.
A great place to sit outside, but perfectly OK inside too. My squid starter was delicious, but the sea bream was a bit overcooked and the veg a bit oily. And roasted new potatoes were overcooked too - perhaps they sat around too long - they seemed a bit wet. I tried my colleague's duck and it was tender and tasty. Overall we had a good time, and I would go again - especially on an evening balmy enough to sit outside.
Good but not outstanding
Good food, pleasant service, interesting new additions to the winter menu. But I find the whole experience lazy. The Waterway is located in an affluent area and it's always busy - which suggests that there is no motivation for the management to drive excellence rather than accept mediocrity. The venue is furbished to a high standard. The management style is 'efficient' rather than welcoming. Its a shame because The Waterway has all the elements to be excellent.
My new favourite restaurant in London! Pure love!
I've loved the Waterway!! The atmosphere was very romantic and the location incredible. The food was so tasty, absolutely beautiful! Me and my partner loved it so much (I'm Italian and I have high standards for food). I've already suggested this fantastic place to my closes friends. And it makes the best soya hot chocolate in London! Without talking about the desserts: I'll definitely go back for the pear and plumb crumble. Divine!
Food and ambiance good but service needs work
The food is consistently good and the outdoor seating in the summer a definite plus but this restaurant needs to work on its service. Once, the server was so rude we had to complain to management that we wanted someone else to take care of our table. Another day, the service was so slow, it felt like they'd forgotten our order. Overall, I would recommend the Waterway but it would benefit from hiring better waitstaff.
A lovely little spot on the river, nice ...
A lovely little spot on the river, nice firepits keep it cosy in the evenings, food was great. However, everything else was a complete frustrating disappointment. We arrive for our table, wait for 20 minutes (don't mind the wait - appreciate they are busy and can't remove people!), but stood being jostled by people trying to get in and out and who were being queued up for 'walk in' tables. Eventually get sat down, phew.. Nice little spot. Ordered our food and drinks in good time... Great. Then, our shared starter arrived, but no plates are available. We also ask for our drinks which haven't yet arrived. Plates then appear, and we ask for our drinks again, waiter has forgotten twice to order them. Mains arrive, not ours. Our actual mains arrive, no cutlery available. Then have to ask for napkins. Decide to order dessert, waited the better part of 25 minutes for it. Ask for the bill, server apologises at this point for the first time, we don't ask for the optional 12.5% gratuity to be taken off, as despite the service being so poor, I'm sure those few extra pounds make a difference paid forward. We split our bill in half, and the waiter rounds our bill up to the nearest pound instead of splitting the actual amount. I'm not going to argue over a few pence, but was a cheeky move, even if the service had been great. Which it wasn't. Left feeling frustrated at how a pub in a great setting with pretty decent food, was being let down by a completely chaotic service and environment, and a waiting team who were either rushed off their feet, or weren't paying attention to anything going on (of which we saw examples of both). Also, side note - people were smoking on the terrace (not the beer garden) whilst we were eating. I don't know if this is in or out of the law, but either way, was foul to put up with as we ate our dinner. Left not wanting to come back. Disappointed.
Sunday lunch in the sunshine
We took advantage of the great weather to book a table for a group on Sunday. Service was great, they are really friendly and always nice. The food was mixed, I had a great quinoa salad but the chargrilled squid was disappointingly sweet. They have nice mezze to share and good drinks. Overall a nice experience, but not the greatest food.
lovely sunshine brunch
very high quality food, well prepared and good service. Winner for brunch with the terrace on the a sunny day.
Great place and great food
I've been to the Waterways a a few times and the food is excellent! I'll definitely recommend this place for dinner or lunch
Booked a table for 2 as a first date for 8.30pm. Arrived at 8.45pm, but reservation was welcomed. Staff were friendly and attentive. Food was very good. Location is excellent. Would highly recommend. Will probably come back soon, maybe to check it out in the daytime. Also got 30% off the bill, as i booked through opentable, but price is not too bad anyway, especially for the quality of the food.
Great to eat outside in a beautiful setting
Six of us ate at the Waterway for a birthday celebration. It was great to sit outside and the patio heaters kept us warm. The food was very good and there was a decent choice for non-meat eaters. We particularly liked the mezze starter and tuna main. Portion sizes were generous. Service was good and unobtrusive and we had a wonderful evening. Would definitely recommend.
Loved this restaurant!
Just enjoyed a really good evening at The Waterway. Everybody was squeezed onto the terraces outside but on a lovely warm evening it created a great ambience and was surprisingly not too noisy. The food came really fast and the service was attentive without being intrusive. The food was totally delicious (I can highly recommend the deluxe burger, which I had with no bun in a nod to health reasons!) The bill was fine for a 3-course meal with wine Will definitely return here.
Great location. Average food and service
Don't expect great things from the food here - it's ok but not amazing. The location makes up for it though. This place is cracking on a sunny day - great outdoor tables with shade. Perfect for group lunches.
Great ambience but not great food
Had a dinner reservation at 7pm so went a few hours earlier to have drinks.. The hostess was very dismissive and said she has a long list of people waiting for a table to sit down which is fair enough .. but made no effort to let us know when tables free up! finally another hostess turned up and gave us a table until our dinner reservation. there is also a guard to tell you where not to stand and where not to sit.. feels a little rigid. Having said that, nice ambience for drinks especially on sunny days!! The food was not great at all.. grilled quid was bland and they just drizzled bottle sweet chilli sauce on it - couldn't finish it! the meze was ok - hummus was ok - vine leaves with rice was stale and hard! Lamb cutlets with cous cous .. lamb was ok .. cous cous was bland .. they had a yogurt sauce which is the same one we had for meze starter which did not go with the dish at all. Definitely go for drinksbut not for the food!
The perfect pub for a summers day! Covered outdoor eating overlooking the Canal in beautiful Little Venice.

Great gastropub. The food is delicious. Recommend to anyone who wants to talk and eat at the same time for a glass of beer or wine.
Summer evening delight
Thoroughly enjoyed our Saturday evening overlooking the canal in little venice eating Al fresco at the waterway. There were outdoor heaters available to ward off the late night chill if required. Lovely vibe to this restaurant with a young and buzzy crowd, some just drinking, others dining. The chips are to die for. ..thick and crunchy triple cooked delights and my grilled salmon on a bed of roast vegetables was delicious. Even had a little bit of room to sample the tasty chocolate brownie with salted caramel icecream.....and the cocktails are great too!
Waitstaff could use some improvement.
We had a good experience our first visit in April, but our second this time after moving into the area was disappointing. The food was OK but the steak was tough. Had to ask three times for water, my 9 yr old daughter's meal came minutes after ours, and our waiter never came to check how everything was, and we could see he was much more attentive to the larger tables. They always have big crowds, so I'm sure they won't miss our business, but I suspect you'll get better service if you have a large group versus a small party of three.
The booking went well, the food outstanding
Service was great. My concern was with time limit it would be rushed - the Waterways have this down to a fine art. The staff were exceptional without being pushy. Springwell
'Even the kids were well behaved'
On a hot saturday lunch there was a relaxed busyness about The Waterway, and my heart sank when I saw tables of parents and kids and we three were placed next to them. I didn't have to worry. They drew, chatted and didn't screetch! AND there was a table of young men with stag do tee shirts. Again, from their table came just a gentle murmuring. so the ambiance was delightful and our food choices ; lamb chops to die for, halloumi salad and my hamburger were all excellent and cooked to individual requests. And we had a particularly delightful rose wine which was chilled to perfection; hugely necessary on such a warm day. Wait staff as always professional and quick. I live nearby but hadn't been for over a year so I was thrilled to see it getting better and better.

Lovely outdoor space and garden. Food does the job.
Great ambience and location
Really enjoyed my visit and would definitely come back- loving the terrace
Where in London on a hot summers evening would you rather be then dinning outside by the Canal, this resturant has the perfect location with a great atmosphere good food and wonderful service. Can't wait to go back
Lovely outside terrace but the rest was pretty average. Nice enough brunch but a very limited choice and a little overpriced.
Experience let down by one very rude and abrupt staff member.. If you want a 'relaxing' afternoon I wouldn't recommend going there.
Great Outdoor Restaurant With Excellent Service
Took my girlfriend here for her birthday which she really enjoyed. It was a bit noisier than expected, I thought it would be a lot more secluded but that might be an unfair expectation as I was going at a peak time with great weather. Food was great, she really enjoyed the lamb chops and the fish I had was also very good. The staff were very friendly and provided excellent service with a smile! Would definitely recommend to others especially for a group or family booking.
Service ok but staff very busy. Food is overpriced and nothing special, which is a shame because we brought a friend to celebrate a special birthday. When the bill came it had nearly £50 of things we didn't order and to cap it all we were ushered to a table outside the gents under a speaker. Maybe we were unlucky?
Great outdoor dining
The Waterway is great for outdoor dining. The food is ok but probably would not recommend if not for the outdoor space.
The venue and décor is lovely, however if you go on a sunny day please note that it gets extremely busy and it is incredibly hard to catch the eye of waiting staff to be served. Numerous times we called out and numerous times it seemed as though they did not have the capacity to assist. It you have long leisurely lunch and time is not a concern - then this would be a perfect venue. The food was okay.
For summer evenings
Great for a Pimms and a burger on a sunny summer evening. The food is standard and the drinks are expensive, but you're there for the setting and the atmosphere. Stuffed full of glitzy clientele.
Great in the sunshine
Good enough food, service a bit haphazard but will go back on a hot day because of the great outdoor area
Anniversary of my girfriend
Outstanding experience. I have been there for a drink the 1erts time and i love the place. This time evering thing was perfection. I will be back for many occasion in the future.
Good vegetarian food.
It's been a long time since I've had good vegetarian food. I'd recommend the haloumi salad. Prossecco based drinks were lovely.
We had a lovely, somewhat romantic, Satu...
We had a lovely, somewhat romantic, Saturday afternoon lunch. The staff were really friendly. One of them misheard by order (which I realised when he brought me a soup spoon), and they were really good about replacing it with what I actually wanted as quickly as possible so both of our meals arrived at the same time without delay. They place has a charming lively atmosphere.
Stunning, busy restaurant
Brilliant atmosphere, fantastic service and delicious food
Had an amazing Friday night dinner here
Absolutely lovely - we booked plenty of time in advance and managed to have a nice table by the water. Lovely view, great menu and nice staff.
Great outdoor eating - a tad overpriced
No such things as free lunch - outdoor terrace is amazing. Choice of food a bit limited and overpriced. Had great fun with other guests. Service was a bit unfriendly from the waitress (no smiles!) but atmosphere was great.
Ideal venue for a group of mature ladies...
Ideal venue for a group of mature ladies who all went to school together and meet every year. The service was very friendly and efficient and the lunch time menu varied and excellent. Location is very good too especially after a cruise on the canal. The table was inside but all the windows were open which was very pleasant. Although very busy it was a quiet area. I certainly will recommend this restaurant to friends.
An enjoyable meal
Overall we quite enjoyed our meal. Was the 1st time any of us had been there and I would happily go again. Due to the great british action arriving on the day we had our table booked it was heaving when we arrived! However our table was awaiting our arrival. My 1 complaint would be that our table was probably a bit small for 4 people. Myself and one other had the sharing T-bone and by the time that was on the table with our plates and 2 others there was no room left for glasses! However the food was very nice, no complaints about that. Was a decent wine selection too.
