  • "It really could not be bettered Superb friendly service and a chef who knows how to cook. The only snag was the car park was nearly full when we arrived and there were no slots for the disabled. A wonderful experience and not outrageously expensive - in fact excellent value."
    dined on 13/04/2014
  • "Very much enjoyed our meal- surprise to find elegant french cuisine in welwyn. Will return. Set menu great value. A la carte meat was great quality and cooking.Favourite dish was the macaroni and cheese.with some ham running through it and a side salad would be a dish in itself. Cheese board very nice."

  • "Meal was nice although felt a little rushed. The second course came up immediately after they had cleared our starter which was far too soon!"
    dined on 05/04/2014
  • "went. on the champagne menu, limited choice but the food was very good indeed. Also, due to it being a group booking (6) we were given a priivate room. It would have been nice to be given a choice as we felt we missed out on the atmosphere of the restaurant. However, a very enjoyable evening with lovely food at a very good price."

  • "Good food at reasonable prices. Enjoyed the dining experience."

  • "This time we went for the taster menu, my wife does not eat meat and the main course was changed to a fish dish which seems to be a problem when trying to do this at other places. Enjoyed every course with the puddings being the highlight as is a selection served up on a tray and 2 of each to save arguments. The wine as always was good and very good value. Even being a Friday night was busy but the service was never rushed the way to enjoy good French food."

  • "The Waggoners is a gem of a place looking like a gastro pub as you approach but don't be deceived, the food and the ambience are reminiscent of fine dining in town. The owner and his polite but friendly staff are always on hand but never intrusive. We went for the scallops to start and the Chateaubriand to share for our main dish. The scallops were full of flavour and the generous serving of steak to share was cooked exactly as ordered. And so to dessert. Elsewhere, cheese can be unceremoniously dumped on a platter, but not here. Eight very different but complementary samplers served on slate rounded off a lovely evening. This restaurant proved again that it's attention to flavour and detail is top notch."

  • "Our table wasnt ready when we arrived in the end we had to have a table laid in the bar! which was a shame.Food was good but didnt think there was much variety, there could have been more things on the menu!"

  • "Tucked away just off the A1(M) in the little hamlet of Ayot St Peter is a picturesque little pub with an excellent French restaurant attached. The charcuterie was good. The lamb was a little overdone for my taste but it was still tender and the panzanella was lovely. All accompanied by massive bunches of rocket on top, which I could do without. The lemon curd was perfectly sharp and sweet against the rich lamb. Service suffered from a lack of staff in a busy restaurant and was therefore slow, but we didn't mind. The waiters and the manager were always pleasant and able to deal with our demanding four year old. This is a really good little restaurant with some great food and is a real find. Highly recommend it!"

  • "Great food and personal service - the best value quality restauramt within striking distance of Welwyn Garden City"

  • "For a family birthday dinner on Saturday night. We always enjoy the food and the service was once again of the highest calibre, making the evening a great success."

  • "Visited for dinner booked relatively last minute via top table. Menu is less extensive than some but all executed beautifully. Service was very attentive - starters and main courses all delivered inside 45 minutes which was a little quicker than we would have liked but when we asked for a pause between main and dessert/cheese it was accommodated. Great insight on the wine list as well. Overall a 4.5 star dining experience."

  • "No need for hundreds of words when just a two or three will do; Absolutely outstanding. Again."

  • "We went to the Waggoners (again) for Sunday lunch - good value, and very good food. The staff were young, but charming and professional, and we very much enjoyed the meal. We will return...."
    dined on 02/03/2014
  • "The food was exceptional, the service was also very good. The waiter was attentive, informative and very helpful given one of our party is allergic to certain nuts. It was a great way to celebrate a birthday."
    dined on 03/03/2014
  • "It's been about a year since we last visited the Waggoners and there have been a few changes. Proprietor Laurent and his team are still as charming as ever but they have a new (English) head chef and the cooking has definitely gone up a notch. Our starter of scallops and rabbit and main of pork belly with lobster were beautifully executed and delicious. A shared cheese plate was large and varied. A good selection of wines by the glass, reasonably priced. We won't leave it a year till the next time!"

  • "This was an opportunity to catch up with a friend whom I hadn't seen for several months. A perfect venue, very friendly, knowledgeable service. Choice of set menu, (good value), or 'a la carte'. We chose the latter and were not disappointed. Scallops delightful followed by Turbot with celeriac and samphire, - perfectly cooked, moist and appetizing. We passed on the desserts. Our bill with just three glasses of Sauvignon Blanc house wine between us was £90. Just a touch expensive, I thought but worth the money for a special lunch in very comfortable surroundings. Long may it continue! I will certainly return."
    dined on 24/02/2014
  • "Having been to the Wagoners some years ago I was not sure what to expect, but I needn't have worried. It lived up to my expectations, with a courteous, friendly welcome and an excellent meal. The only down side is that it was a bit on the pricey side, but then it was Valentine's Night."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "Had the Champagne menu. which is only available if you book on line and you do have to ask for it. Food and service excellent as usual and this menu is extremely good value for money"
    dined on 30/01/2014
  • "Before the booking the restaurant manager had said the menus were changing and couldn't guarantee to do the Tasting Menu but if we asked on the booking they might be able to. When we arrived we were told our menu request wasn't on the system but when the manager looked again she found it! Sadly they couldn't do this menu so we went with the standard A La Carte menu. We found the food to be very good. The A La Carte menu is fairly limited and does not describe the food well. My wife's sea bream was very small and poor value. So the chef knows what he's doing but what he is preparing isn't reflected in the menus. Note: I have spotted that the last reviewer had the 'Degustation' menu the day after our visit but it wasn't available for us?"

  • "Booked on the spur of the moment for a special occasion. I was attracted by the reviews on the website and the photos of the restaurant. I was not disappointed. My sister in law was visiting from Australia. My wife (her twin) had recently died and we were both celebrating her life and our re-acquaintance before she had to head back to Australia. It was everything I hoped for. The food was sensational, the service (thank you Maria) was attentive but unobtrusive and the surroundings sublime. Would I recommend this restaurant - what do you think! I shall look forward to the summer as the private walled garden looked calm and peaceful. I do not eat out very often but this venue will become one of my favorite haunts."
    dined on 13/01/2014
  • "We have used this restaurant a few times before last week so we expected a god meal but for entertaining 10 people to Dinner for a Birthday it was an excellent choice. A 6 course 'Degustation' menu including coffees was prepared for us. The service was excellent also, both discreet and efficient, and even a gluten free diet was catered for with no difficulty at all. We all thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the very good wines we chose. Well done Laurent Brydniak for an excellent evening."
    dined on 12/01/2014
  • "The restaurant is secluded from the main roads but very easy to get to. Although close to the motorway you feel as if you are deep into the countryside and ready a delightful meal. On arrival the hostess too our coats and led us to a nicely positioned table. I was expecting a limited menu as it's the Christmas period, but nothing could be further from the truth. After being ticked off for forgetting to add that it was my partners birthday in my booking, the table was quickly decorated appropriately. The starters tasted amazing our main course which arrived cooked exactly as ordered, usually I have to order steaks on shade above what I really want. Topped off with two perfect deserts and fine wine the evening was all we could ask for."

  • "Long time since had last been to Waggoners. Had seen good reviews so visit was disappointing. There is a good atmosphere and it was busy suggesting it is well regarded but the food was nothing special and the service friendly but inefficient. Maybe the Sunday menu is not challenging enough for the kitchen and the numbers got the better of the front of house staff. The knowledge of the wines was limited at best. With so few sweets how could staff not know what ice creams and sorbets were on offer and end up serving two of the three portions on the plate the same?"
    dined on 15/12/2013
  • "We thought the food was disappointing and not what we had come to expect from this restaurant"

  • "I had arranged a pre-Christmas family get together for the Festive Menu on a Saturday Lunch time. I booked on the basis of reviews on the internest as it is equidistant for all family members to get too. We had a private dining area which was nice (if a little cool, but a small heater was found instantly!) and the service was excellent, very attentive. Food was good, my only slight critiscism was that main meal of turkey dinner was not that hot when it was served. It was not a roast dinner in the traditional sense but still very tasty. My partner had the game stew which was delicious. Pudding was good too! All in all, we all had a lovely meal and I would definately go back."

  • "We are returning customers and each time we have dined at The Waggoners the food has been excellent. This time however, the food was superb. We both had the grazing menu, one with wine and one without (due to driving). All courses were well balanced with flavours that complimented each other. The wines that were paired with them also excellent choices. The new chef has certainly taken the menu to a different dimension. The waiting staff were extremely pleasant and efficient and took the time to explain the courses as they were brought to our table. We will definitely be returning again soon and would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a hugely enjoyable dining experience."

  • "We dined at The Waggoners on a Friday evening and we were made to feel very welcome. The quail and sea bream main courses cooked to perfection and beautifully presented; however we should have ordered extra vegetables as there were very few accompanying the main. For dessert we chose treacle tart and coconut rice pudding and they were both exceptional. We did miss the delicious prawn canapes they use to serve here. The service was also very good and we look forward to returning soon."

  • "Good food done very well. Friendly and helpful staff. Set in pleasant surroundings. Coffee needs some serious attention (by the management not the patrons!) as it was terrible. Overall, a good experience."
    dined on 01/11/2013
  • "First visit what a great find as have been looking for a decent restaurant in area for some time reasonable price and great food will definitely be going back"
    dined on 30/10/2013
  • "Put this one on you favourites list. Assuming you can find it ok,as it's tucked up a little lane that could do with a sign-post. But once there, such trifles fall away as you survey this impressive old inn and enter into the cosy world within. Service is extremely friendly and welcoming - Moira seems to set the tone with her mixture of kindly but impish aunt who's been left running the sweet shop. We had the scallops and the goats cheese starters - gastro fireworks and ultimate comfort food. Mains were an outstanding Chateaubriand steak. Dessert was an unusual-looking but delicious French apply tart. Hard to fault anything really, great food, great ambiance (if you like old-fashioned). A very good place to spend a relaxing evening."
    dined on 16/10/2013
  • "We love the Waggoners. Moira and her team always make us feel so special. This was a sad occasion for us as we were leaving the area and wanted to celebrate - the Waggoners is warm welcoming, excellent food, excellent service. We will miss you all very much. Well done yet again x"

  • "I took my mum for the ladies lunch on Wednesday and everything was lovely as usual. We both had salmon to start, I had chicken for main course and mum had tagliatelle and we had creme brulee and sorbet respectively for dessert. All very good. Service was excellent. Would recommend for a very reasonable and very pleasant lunch out."
    dined on 25/09/2013
  • "Had a business lunch today with all of us use to eating in The City the quality of the food here matches the best but at less than half the price. For one of us was the first time and he cant wait to return on a evening with wife's."
    dined on 18/09/2013
  • "A restaurant of this caliber can often have a patronising attitude to customers where they believe money is no object.. Not here, there is always a great welcome from a professional team. The staff are polite and knowledgeable. The food is outstanding and the wine selection is excellent. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of food, wine and service... many thanks for a nice evening."
    dined on 13/09/2013
  • "I booked a table at the Waggoners for dinner as a treat for my wife's birthday. We were both thoroughly impressed. Service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The food was superbly prepared and beautifully presented, offering some interesting twists on classic French favourites - the edible flowers with a starter of Saint Jacques were particularly fun! They have a really excellent wine list, plenty of choice from Europe and the New World and the waiter more than happy to make a recommendation sympathetic to your food choice. The setting is lovely offering fine dining style in a relaxed and unstuffy atmosphere. Absolutely wonderful evening - will be back very soon."
    dined on 07/09/2013
  • "The food was excellent! We had the special offer set menu which was great value for money and would have happily paid full price! The staff were very attentive and knowledgeable and made us feel very welcome. It is a place for a relaxed evening drink or a more formal meal and we'll definitely be back!"

  • "We made a last minute decision to go out for Sunday lunch and checked out Toptable for inspiration. The Waggoners popped up and off we went. Friendly, professional greeting and we were quickly shown our table. Some initial confusion over discrepancies between the online Toptable menu and restaurant menu were swiftly and very satisfactorily sorted out by the manager. A very enjoyable lunch, even though Sunday lunch is probably not their forté. The weekly a la carte menu looks very appealing and is French inspired. I daresay we will be back soon to sample it. Also of interest is their Ladies Lunch on Wednesdays. A very reasonably priced set menu with champagne cocktail - a good excuse to go out with the girls!"

  • "Lunch at the Waggoners was wonderful. I had an excellent salmon gravadlax for starters and the best risotto [crayfish] I have ever eaten. Pudding was panna cotta which was all right. This was followed by good coffee and chocolate mints. There is no service charge included in the bill and I only realised this just in time to leave a well-earned tip. Service was discreet and friendly."
