We thought the food was excellent, the atmosphere pleasant and relaxed, and the staff very friendly and welcoming. A great venue for a special occasion. It's not just the building that's had a makeover either. The service is distinctly improved - smart, attentive, capable and knowledgable now. The menu too has had a good upgrade - certainly "getting there"! The new extension is a delight and I can't wait to try it in the warm summer months with the doors opened right back. The restaurant itself is very nicely laid out, although a couple of us thought it would benefit from a dedicated bar area for pre-dinner drinks and the staff are very helpful and provide an excellent level of service without being intrusive throughout the meal. The food was absolutely spectacular though....we had a full three courses and everyone was very content by the end. The highlight for me personally was the mouth-watering filet steak and my only criticism/disappointment was the lack of meringue in the chef's Eton Mess, which left me feeling slightly short-changed! We were pleasantly surprised, a lovely place tucked in what looks like a village green. The service was very prompt and staff were young, vibrant and friendly. The food was fantastic and to be fair although slightly pricey, it was well priced for the quality of food, service and surroundings.

The menu is not extensive, but is balanced and offers a good selection. The staff took time to explain certain dishes and offer suggestions. We sampled two wines, both of which were very nice. The ambience was quite smart but comfortable, and even though we ate early, it was nice to see the restaurant busy. The potato mash melted in the mouth. No fuss was made over a 2004 Viognier from Argentina (slightly oxydised) that was sent back and replaced with a young Gruner Veltliner from Wachau, Austria, delicious, light; went for a second bottle.
Too bad the Tarte Tatin turned out to be closer to an open apple clafouti (in looks). We don't agree with the delivering a "personal" interpretation that is far from the original. If I order a Tarte Tatin then I expect the dish named as such, e.g. an upside down apple tarte. the cod was excellent , and the lamb rump very good , gravey a bit thin ,and both dishes lacked a few veg.
the pudds were very tasty ,but a bit small.
Wine by the glass is very expensive for what you get , but the wine an Argentinian Malbec was very good, the viognier is a very good white.
will go again , we enjoyed the eveing out with friends.
