A word from The Tommyfield
Come to The Tommyfield, a charming local pub in Kennington, south London, for super friendly service and hearty gastro fare. The opening of The Tommyfield marks the 150th anniversary of the first British chip shop at Tommyfield market in Oldham.

Inspired by Victorian chop houses and food markets, our menu features sustainable fish sourced from the English coast, great cuts of British beef and traditional pie and mash.

As a proper pub it’s not just about the food, pop in for a pint of excellent cask ale or a well earned glass of award-winning English wine.

Diner Reviews
  • "Lovely service and food. A small mistake was made on our order (they forgot to bring us a side we ordered), but they apologised, quickly rectified this and didn't charge us! Probably the best food of all the renaissance pubs we have visited so far... and cocktails to die for!"

  • "hadn't tried the Tommyfield before and took the risk as I'm always on the lookout for good places locally. I found the food choice a little limited (and slightly overpriced). The grilled fish I had was hugely over salted (and I'm a salt fiend!). Wouldn't rush back unless I needed to be in the area."

  • "Visited the gastro pub last Wednesday. Staff were friendly, pub was busy but not too noisy, even with a football game on TV. Chilean wine was smooth and reasonably Food was a mix: fishcake with poached eggs and burger were great; the artichoke tart and focaccia bread really not as good and need extra flavour. But the worst turn-off was the bad smell, that ended up making us leave earlier. Fix that, and we'll be back more often."

  • "Tommyfields is a brilliant place. Really interesting menu (when do you ever get to have rabbit?!), really friendly and helpful staff (arranged an earlier table for me when I showed up early). I will go back again."

  • "One of the very good pubs belonging to the Renaissance group. The Tommyfield isn't the best of the group, but it is a fine pub with a fun atmosphere. If you are in the Kennington area and looking for a good meal in a relaxed atmosphere this is a great option. The sticky toffee pudding is excellent as well!"

  • "Good pub grub - and great comedy night on alternate Thursdays."

  • "The food and service were very good and great to have such a good local venue. Will definitely go back."

  • "I celebrated my birthday there for a group of 8 and everything was perfect. The meat is amazing. Probably the best gastropub to go for food in the Kennington/Oval area."

  • "The Tommyfield is very local to me and I've been in there more times than I can remember, mostly for a drink on a Saturday night. I've eaten there at least a handful of times too. The food is to a good standard. I haven't eaten steak there, usually opting for a burger. The chips are very good. I quite like the two booths somewhat hidden away towards the rear of the place but in the winter there is a draft from the large windows. My only criticism, and why the experience gets 3 stars and not 4, is that when ordering I wasn't asked how I would like my meat done. I usually go for medium-rare. When not asked, I felt like they only do it one way, I know I should have asked. I then assumed medium is what it would come as but it came well done."

  • "I love this place, it never fails to deliver. Relaxed, happy Sunday afternoon vibe... Roast Yum! Rabbit pie Yum! Passion Fruit Mojito Yum Yum! ;-)"

  • "We took advantage of the promotional 50% off your meals, however although the food was very nice it wasn't worth the full price as it was lacking on portion size. The staff were very friendly and attentive but the music was so loud it was almost impossible to have a conversation over your meal or hear what the staff were saying too. We also struggled with our very large plates fitting onto the small square table that we were seated at. It was very difficult accomodating plates, wine and water bottles and glasses!"

  • "Come here regularly & have been here twice this week. The food is great but on this occasion the service was appalling. We had a booking and were shown to our table but no one came near us then for an hour! We had to go to the bar for drinks and when we were ready to eat we had to go looking for someone to help us. It was clear they were under major pressure but the problem was that they weren't a bit nice about it. We ordered drinks and had to ask twice for them. The food came and was lovely, we asked for sauces and had to ask twice for those also. Finally when we ordered the bill we had to chase it after 20 minutes. One of the staff actually said to one of our party when we asked for the third time for the bill "you look worried"!"

  • "I booked the Tommyfield Resaurant having never been there before for New Years Eve (also my birthday). We were five one of which was a ten year old then we had to increase the number by two at the last minute. This was achieved and set the trend for a great night. The place was packed and full of atmosphere but the service was fast friendly and nothing was to much trouble. The food which included steak, duck and fish were all first class and good value for money, Giovani even rustled up a cake and candle at no notice. If this is what you get on the busiest night of the year I am looking forward to my next visit when things are less hectic. Thanks for making our night special guys and good luck in 2014."

  • "The Tommyfield was close to the B&B where we were staying in the Kennington area, so we decided to give it a try for Christmas Eve, and we're glad we did. The place has a neighborhood pub feel. The service was charming, and the food (traditional steak pie and other local specialities) was delicious and reasonably-priced."

  • "Beautiful, love this place...always a great Sunday Roast"
    dined on 15/12/2013
  • "Delicious food an great atmosphere. Friendly staff but a little slow. Quite cold inside as we were near the window. Will definitely be going back!!!"
    dined on 29/11/2013
  • "it was ok but although the Christmas menu was on the website it wasn't available on the day. Also the staff weren't that attentive, they didn't bring us a dessert menu."
    dined on 03/12/2013
  • "The restaurant had a drain problem, it hit you as soon as you walked in. Probably not an long term problem, but not nice. The food was poor and lacking quality."
    dined on 02/11/2013
  • "Nice place, good food and great service, I strongly recommend to book before to go there as the place is very busy for dinner."
    dined on 03/10/2013
  • "I went here for a Sunday roast and was very pleased with what I got. I had the beef which was flavorsome, tender and not fatty. I think this is the first roast I've had where I didn't need to add salt, everything was just right down to the veg and the yorkshire pudding. Even though the football was on when I went there and it was quite busy, the crowd was not at all boisterous and I was able to enjoy my meal in a decent atmosphere as I have no interest in football. The staff were friendly and attentive and I will definitely be going here again."
    dined on 22/09/2013
  • "If you are ever in the Kennington/Oval area definitely head to the Tommyfield for a good meal. The little pots of gravy that accompanied our dishes made everything just right. A hidden gem."
    dined on 21/08/2013
  • "Lovely neighbourhood pub with very pleasant staff and some good ideas, totally let down by its kitchen. Food overcooked/undercooked/burnt, and some recipes just totally wrong - no-one in their right mind accompanies English fish and chips with mushy peas served straight from the fridge as though they were guacamole."
    dined on 20/08/2013
  • "Food: Really delicious and huge pies (I recommend the Venison!), although It would have been nice if it had been served with potatoes AND veg as opposed to either/or. Service: Maybe a little overfriendly, but generally speaking our waitress was very accommodating and courteous, recommended wines to us and did not get annoyed when we took ages to order. Ambiance: Really nice feel to the place, and the decor was just up my street. It did seem like the staff couldn't decide what type of music to play, and cut off a couple of songs midway through, but it didn't distract us too much. Value: Great value - four of us ate a main course and consumed two bottles of wine for £25 per head inc tip."
    dined on 02/08/2013
  • "The Tommyfield offers restaurant-style dining and an excellent menu of fresh food with good ingredients at a reasonable price. Unfortunately you are also sat next to fuss ball and a big screen, which totally ruins the experience,. The Tommyfield needs to decide whether it wants to be a restaurant / bar or a sports bar. As the nearby White Bear is a sports bar, I would suggest it opts to be a restaurant."
    dined on 19/07/2013
  • "English comfort food done well in a old pub with too few staff. Servers were harried. Service was unhurried."
    dined on 27/05/2013
  • "Fits my vision of traditional Brit pub...old, rustic wooden floors, chairs,tables...limited but excellent ales & lagers on tap...menu of spring bok (thats a S African Gazelle), Kangaroo, & Venison meat pies, fish and chips, other pasta, meat & veg dishes...fun and interesting adventure for omnivores and tolerant vegetarians. Kangaroo less gamey than venison, closer to beef...no Spring Bok tonight...haddock hot & flaky, served with side of very pedestrian chips (fries). Service was great, the buzz as the pub filled with thank god its Friday-ites full of humor and good cheer. Kind of place I would like to go for comfort and warmth on a cold and rainy night or to celebrate a good friend's promotion or departure or other event of good fortune."
    dined on 17/05/2013
  • "Have eaten here a few times over the years and it seems the balance between eating and drinking is changing. I wouldn't return for dinner with friends on a Friday or Saturday night - the bar was very busy and the music loud. We couldn't hear one another and while the wine and food continue to be good value, tasty and the service prompt I think there are places more conducive to social dinner with friends. Come earlier in the week or on Sunday afternoons ... unless you want to have a drink."
    dined on 10/05/2013
  • "I came to The Tommyfield for a catch-up with a friend and we were sat by friendly attantive staff at a nice table with a great view of Kennington's streetlife wandering past. We both had the fish and chips which was good and shared a lovely sticky toffee pudding. The wine was good and reasonably priced. All in all for a nice, reasonable value informal dinner in good surroundings I'd recommend The Tommyfield."
    dined on 16/04/2013
  • "I used to go Tommyfield fairly often, loved the food, wasn't too expensive and atmos relaxed chilled vibe, not too pretentious but nice place to go. I think it has changed hands/management as the last time I went the food was awful, to the point I won't go back. We had dishes we both had before and really enjoyed. I had chicken that was extremely dry, on rice (before had been on sauteed potatoes with really nice creamy sauce) with veg that was clearly from a frozen packet. Partner had steak, previously he raved about being the best he ever had, he now said was inedible. Even the chips so good before, skin on crispy presented in cute metallic buckets, were bad like home oven chips and in a cheap china bowl. A real shame. Staff all friendly."

  • "Went to Tommyfield in Kennington with a friend. Food was great and so was the service and their house white wine was lovely, good atmosphere aswell. Have been there before and was not disappointed this time. Would definitely go back again."

  • "Great service and amazing food as usual at the Tommyfield!"

  • "The Tommyfield reall has the best steak and pies in London, and the starters are amazing too! Bring back the Chicken liver pate!!"

  • "My fiancee and I took my parents to the Tommyfield for Mother's Day and it handily coincided with the England v Italy rugby match, so dad was happy too! The food was delicious and very good portion sizes. The men had a sunday roast and mum and I had the grilled Hake. Dessert was a naughty addition.... the banoffee pie was delicious but beat me in the portion size! No complaints from anyone and the service was attentive but not over-bearing. Highly recommend this place for good food, service and ambience."

  • "Went here for a friends birthday, the place was nice and comply. Staff was polite and friendly."

  • "The Tommyfield is on fire at the moment. The last two meals i've had have been exactly what i envisioned when i ordered them. However, the pies are served with either mash, chips, or greens. I chose chips. Unfortunately a pie with chips and no portion of greens clearly looks like an incomplete meal, and considering my girlfriend had a MASSIVE half a roast chicken with all the trimmings for a very similar price, it seems odd that the chef hasn't looked at the dish and noticed also that a pie and chips alone is one portion of greens short of a complete meal. That said, this place is definitely worth going to. We have been twice recently and we will be going again soon."

  • "I went to The Tommyfield for Sunday lunch with two friends - the food was delicious but the heating wasn't on and the pub was freezing! I did ask if they could turn it on but they said it was automated so they couldn't. We were also on a table in the corner and had to keep waving to the waiting staff to get their attention. I'd go back - but in Spring or Autumn."

  • "Ive visited several times before and the food is always of a good standard presented in a lively, buzzing atmosphere. However where this restaurant lets itself down consistently is the service. Staff are friendly but service uis haphazzard. Diners seem to be overlooked, orders taken down incorrrectly or items forgotten about. Having said that any mistakes are rectified by the staff swiftly and usually doesnt detract too much from the experience. Overall i enjoy visiting there. Its a good place to visit with a group of friends ... as long as you're not in a rush."

  • "Not a great experience. Although reasonable value, the service was poor, the table and floor grubby, the food just OK."
