Diner Reviews
  • "We booked lunch at the Swan Hotel as we have eaten here before and was very impressed by the service, food and the Gallery resturant environment. We decided to select food from the lunch menu as it catered for all our tastes including my daughter who is a vegitarian. The service was excellent from the moment we were shown to our table until we left. The food was very nicely and creatively presented and beautifully cooked. I am sure when the opportunity arises we will dine there again."

  • "Excellent food, smaliish portions which meant I had room for desert, plenty of vegetables, thoughtful menu, great service, wine was outstanding. I like the candied lemon on the white chocolate parfait and the bechamel sauce was very nice. "

  • "A special day for the two of us - our 55th Wedding Anniversary - It couldn't have gone better. Welcoming, attentive and efficient staff. All very polite and friendly too. The food was excellent - Well presented and cooked to perfection. Try the slow braised Lamb Shank !!! We didn't use the wine list as I was driving but this seemed very good. Desserts were delicious (a very important part of our meal) and creatively presented. Thoroughly recommended and we will definitely return."

  • "Apart from the wine order being wrong the meal was very good, not many young people in, but it was a week day lunch time so that could be why."

  • "We like to dine at the Swan, but the service at our recent visit was appallingly slow. Lunch took nearly two and a half hours! And we gave up waiting for our coffee. What made it worse was the fact that folk who arrived after us got served before us (the same thing happened on a previous visit) . Some of those served before and more speedily than us appeared to be regulars, and known personally to the staff. Customers should be served in the order they arrive, not according to whether they are regulars or not. In response to our cancelling the non-existent coffee, the waiter semi-apologised by stating that the staff had been busy with both restaurants. Surely this suggests that more staff are needed (both inside and outside the kitchens)."

  • "A fabulous, sophisticated, olde worlde, charming, extremely child-friendly restaurant & hotel with beautifully decorated and furnished rooms / public areas and fabulous food. Thoroughly recommend and hope to re-visit for an overnight stay!"
    dined on 26/08/2013
  • "Had a wonderfully atmospheric set Sunday lunch which was nice in terms of atmosphere and service. But have to say the food was badly let down by being very much overcooked both the beef and pork. Such a shame"
    dined on 25/08/2013
  • "Service was outstanding and the food was food - lovely building. Will visit again."
    dined on 23/08/2013
  • "This is not the first time we have visited The Swan, and as always found the food and the service to be first class. The building itself is wonderful and the dining room very atmospheric. Having said that I could have done without the piano accompaniment. As we were sitting almost directly underneath it spoilt any chance of quiet conversation. I also felt it was out of keeping with the atmosphere in the room. If you must have a piano accompaniment then at least it should be some appropriate classical pieces, played softly, rather than random selections from pop songs of the 20th century, with added twiddly bits. None of the other diners seemed particularly entranced either!"
    dined on 18/08/2013
  • "We took an American visitor to the Swan for lunch in the dining room - we ate posh locally caught fish, chips, mushy peas and side order of local samphire. Beautifully presented and attentive waiters. The dessert was a lemon posset - wonderful mixture of flavours and memorable.... it had green tea foam on the top!! The American loved the very old building, ambience and food so I recommend the Swan as a perfect place to take a special guest!"

  • "I really like discovering new places, but often return to have a disappointing or mediocre second or third experience. The Swan at Lavenham either has some good things going for it, or is on a 5 year lucky streak - food always very good, with some creative menus, wine and beer both good, everyone seems to know the ambience aimed for. Oh, and the afternoon teas - even if these aren't really your thing (not mine), they could convert you!"

  • "A birthday surprise for a friend . Weather hot so we decided to lunch out doors in the garden. As we arrived at 12.30 it was not too busy .However everyone arriving also chose the garden and service slowed. My friend's cafetiere of coffee was not acceptable as the strained coffee was full of grains and not pleasant to drink. However the waitress offered her a fresh pot and when she demurred, did not charge us for the grainy coffee. We enjoyed our visit overall and the birthday girl was thrilled to be back at the Swan!"

  • "Hi It was my fathers 90th Birthday and he is basically a plain eater. The food was very good and he had all that we wanted. We asked for strawberries and ice cream which was NOt on the dessert menu and it was supplied. Excellent time Thanks Kind regards Brian"

  • "The Swan at Lavenham is a very special place, with an extraordinary dining room. Food is generally excellent, though portions are not over-generous. I enjoyed the pork cheek and risotto starter, followed by the venison. My wife had the duck and chicken pate to start, but found the chicken pate had an unpleasant texture. Her main was very sparse on the vegetable front. We both ordered the dark chocolate fondant for dessert and this was where the problems started. 55 minutes we waited for them and when they arrived they were rather disappointing, having collapsed. Even though we were offered free liqueurs as recompense, it was not enough to overcome the disappointment to my wife's birthday dinner treat."
    dined on 05/05/2013
  • "I have always found the Swan to provide excellent food and service on the many occasions I have eaten there."
    dined on 30/04/2013
  • "We went to the swan for my birthday treat, service was impeccable, food was lovely, only one small point, bread was very expensive! Would definitely go back , afternoon tea look delicious"
    dined on 29/04/2013
  • "I would also recommend this hotel for lunches - something omitted (like dinner) from 2. above. The experience was really excellent and my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The service actually was arguably the best I have seen in a long time. Only 4 stars because they forgot to bring the ordered sparkling water. Still, we were not charged for that so not a problem. Especially excellent aspects: 1. No-one came round to ask if the food was OK. Thank goodness for that. 2. Waiters went round checking the tables - all the time - and not as usual managing to look the other way. 3. No music/musack 4. Swift detection of our readiness to leave with no need to ask for the bill 5. Prices represent good value We shall go there again"
    dined on 17/04/2013
  • "Great food as always. However our waiter was so rude, (until the bill was produced) he didn't speak when placing food down, just dropped it in front of us. He didn't know any of the wines only went by numbers. Also when asked if he would recommend a desert wine with pudding. He replied I don't know it's your personal choice. This guy should not be in such a high class restaurant. I have been coming here every year for the last 10 years and have never been treated so bad. It's such a shame as we always look forward to this meal but will seriously consider about coming again."
    dined on 14/04/2013
  • "Had a lovely time at the Swan and the four of us enjoyed our afternoon tea. If I were to be very picky, we did not get any tea spoons to use when our tea arrived. This was quickly sorted with no problem. We could of had more cream and jam, the portion we were given would have been enough for two people, not four, but again easily sorted out."
    dined on 08/04/2013
  • "The food looked very impressive but the flavours were uninspiring and predictable. I was hoping for something more for the price I paid. There was a definite lack of ambience too, a feeling that talking too loud would be rude."
    dined on 04/04/2013
  • "We ate at The Swan at lunchtime and thought their set menu was not just delicious but excellent value for the standard of food. The wine by the glass menu is also very good. We haven't eaten there in the evening so not sure how this would translate to the evening menu but we will certainly be going back at lunchtime. Charming staff and beautiful surroundings only add to the experience."
    dined on 29/03/2013
  • "I went to the swan as it was my boyfriends birthday. The staff in the restaurant were amazing, the food was great. Once we finished the meal we went and sat in the bar area, where there was a dog in there which I was not expecting. The lady that was working at the bar was speaking to customers (they looked like regulars) she was using quite vulgar language and was explaining to them how she acts when she is drunk. Which I did not .think was appropriate as we have just paid a lot of money to have meal in their restaurant it put a downer on our experience. She also did not seem to know where any of the drinks were behind the bar and my boyfriend had to point out to her were everything was."
    dined on 27/03/2013
  • "We were looked after from the first minute. The ambience was great, and food excellent value for money. Lovely meals followed by tea on one of the sofas - there was no problem with us moving to another area for this, which some restaurants find difficult. Cannot be faulted and will definitely go again"
