Diner Reviews
  • "As a regular here I found this lunch extra good value with 30% off. Food good quality and service attentive but what made it extra special was the generous sized table at the canal side, lots of light, a fresh airy feel to the restaurant on a spring day. Hard to imagine a nicer way to pass a lunchtime rendezvous with my wife and accountant. And it's good in the evenings too when the canal reflects the lights and sparkles. In good weather make sure you book. Arrive early to have a better chance of canal side table"

  • "This is a very cute little place and there was a lovely relaxed vibe even though it was quite busy. Staff were attentive and the quality of the fish and chips were fantastic. Starters of crab salad and ceviche were disappointing but the mains made up for it."

  • "It was my first time there with a group of 6 and we requested for canal dining. It wasn't the most beautiful of days but the ambiance was still fantastic. On top of that, we got a 30% discount off food items. I will definitely dine again at The Summerhouse!"

  • "The only thing that the Summerhouse has to improve is the service that is very slow probably because the restaurant was so busy on a Sunday, but the place is so pleasant that I suppose it is part of the experience. The food is gastropub type. Portions are OK if a bit on the small side. We found it surprising that no one should have accompanied to the door when we left... we are French, you see..."

  • "A short and pleasant walk along the canal from Paddington, The Summerhouse seemed the most suitable choice for lunch before carrying on to a match at Wembley. And so it turned out. My two daughters (one vegetarian) and I were offered the choice of a canalside table - protected by effective clear plastic sheeting - or one with less weather inside. Service was at all times attentive and effecient. The small menu gave a good choice for us all, all really good. I especially enjoyed the clam chowder, but the batter on the fish and chips was a little soggy on the inside. Starter and good-sized main course left no room for dessert - next time!"

  • "The Summerhouse is a fantastic café/restaurant situated alongside the canals of Maida Vale. This time we came for brunch with a bigger group and were delighted that they had opened up all their windows to the canal front and sunshine was pouring into the place. Brilliant views of passing barges and swimming wildlife combined with a delicious breakfast/brunch selection of food (delicious eggs florentine and yummy buttermilk pancakes for example) made this morning a brilliant one! I spotted a small balcony extension that featured seating as well and plan to return for a romantic dinner soon."

  • "Went on a Sunday evening so it was not very busy. Sat right next to the canal which was a delight. Food and service was great. Highly recommended."

  • "Very enjoyable, really nice ambience. Tasty food, would happily return."

  • "Beautiful place. great location. Friendly waitresses. Fish was tasty and fresh BUT very expensive and desert was disappointing- a tart tartan with hardly any apples! I will not return soon."

  • "First went on friday not cheap, top table offer helped a little towards food drinks very expensive. food exceptional, location stunning I then returned on Sunday, rather a different story, restaurant extremely busy, service suffered, they had run out of many items from menu and then certain items suddenly appeared on various tables whom arrived after us! The food we did order was rather disappointing, my very expensive lemon sole, was absolutely tiny and over cooked! £100 for lunch, we shared starter and pudding, tap water but did have one of the more reasonable priced botttle of wine ! Even bread very scarce, dry and usual olives vanished! rather shocking to find out service charge does not go to the waiting staff !!"

  • "Pleasant location and reliable food and service are the selling points"

  • "A canal side restaurant nearby Paddington. We went there after we picked up a friend who flied a long way to London. The weather was still quite chill but sunny, so it was perfect to dine in this restaurant. We sat inside but can still feel the lovely sunshine. With the toptable promotion (30% off in food), the price is very reasonable. Menu wasn't creative, but from the taste, i know they use fresh and good ingredient, and the portion was huge. I love my lemon sole with Jerusalem artichoke. Service was attentive, no complaint at all. I would definitely come back again in summer."

  • "I have been here a few times and love it every time. The service last time let me down but this time i was surprised by the new menu and great service! The food was even better than before which just made it perfect :) I took my date there and he loved it - perfect result!"

  • "The restaurant has a very nice setting by the canal in Maida Vale. I would think the setting would be lovely on a summers day/ evening with the frontage opened on the canal side. Service warm and friendly, food good but a little pricey. First two courses came very quickly. Would go back but next time in the summer as stated above."

  • "I have been to Summerhouse several times in the last two years and I recently noticed that the quality of food has declinex considerably. The fish wasn't fresh and the cooking was very oily. That justifies why it is not crowded anymore. Nice atmosphere and good service still."

  • "It never disappoints. Food is excellent, and location is superb!"

  • "Whilst the venue is beautiful and you truly feel like you're on holiday eating alongside the canal, when we tried to ask for wheat free bread, 4 waiters had to come over and all of them thought we were checking if the bread was 'free'. No one spoke fluent English! When we later asked for a side of hummus, which was even on their menu, they had no idea what it was. The only other gripe was they had so many staff on, that we were never left alone which made for a frustrating evening when you are trying to catch up with an old friend, In short, too many waiters on shift, all of whom struggled to understand their clientele ."

  • "very good restaurant and atmosphere. careful service."

  • "We enjoyed a fabulous dinner at The Summerhouse on Saturday. I was a little worried that we would be chilly - given it is the end of January in London directly on the canal. But the restaurant was warm and cosy. The meal was outstanding - particularly my plaice main course. The signature prawn popcorn starter was crisp and light as promised and deserves the accolades it gets. Don't wait til Summer to try The Summerhouse. It is amazing throughout the seasons."

  • "Great restaurant serving great food, with generally kind staff. However, we went on a Sunday night and one of the waiter must have had a long and painful day - as his service was sub par compared to that of the other servers and he appeared "unhappy" to be serving our table."
    dined on 26/01/2014
  • "A local restaurant we keep going back to with or without friends. Always very good overall. Slightly on the pricy side but only slightly and you pay for what you get. We'll be back for sure... Thank you!"
    dined on 26/01/2014
  • "Its a lovely place, food is delicious and I love the location by the canal."
    dined on 25/01/2014
  • "Having lived near this restaurant for years for some reason we had never eaten here. We had intended to visit in the summer as we thought it would be nice to overlook the canal when eating on a sunny day. However we ended up going in January and found it lovely and warm and welcoming even on a miserable wet night. We enjoyed a delicious fish pie from the regular menu and the fish special was also very good. Nice attentive service - we were pleased to have eventually discovered the Summerhouse and will definitely be back."
    dined on 24/01/2014
  • "Just re-opened after minor refurbishment the Summerhouse is as much a delight in the dark days of Jan as in balmy June!"
    dined on 17/01/2014
  • "the food and service were excellent a bit pricey but overall a very nice evening"
    dined on 04/01/2014
  • "We booked on New Years' Day (normally a quiet time) for a family party. The welcome was great, and the staff were attentive. Cocktails excellent, winelist good too. One of the family is on a gluten free diet and the waiters knew which dishes would be OK for her. The food was excellently prepared and presented. All round exactly what was required for a special night out."
    dined on 01/01/2014
  • "Went on a toptable deal with a couple of girlfriends from work on a Tuesday night. Nothing about the dining and service experience that I could fault. I think outside of the toptable deal it would be somewhere to save for a special occasion as not the cheapest place to eat. However I will definitely go back again, ideally in the summer so getting the full effect of the canal side setting,"
    dined on 26/11/2013
  • "Experience could have been a bit better; service was a little lacking, one server accidentally hit one of our party in the head with a wine bottle, and two of us who ordered pheasant had to send it back as portions were raw."
    dined on 13/12/2013
  • "Sunday night dinner by the water. Relaxed meal. Good food. Good choices and service. Who needs more!!"
    dined on 08/12/2013
  • "Very good fish restaurant along the Canal in Little venice. This a really charming place and the menu changes along the seasons. Everything tastes very fresh, and the desserts were all amazing!"
    dined on 06/12/2013
  • "This was a reliable choice for a place near Paddington Railway Station and on the canal where I could catch up with my cousin for a nice meal. We chose a Rioja to go with the Risotto and a Prawn Pasta, both very good. Overall we were very well looked after by the attentive staff."
    dined on 05/12/2013
  • "A lovely discovery on a winter night. A warm welcomeand great meal alongside the canal."
    dined on 29/11/2013
  • "I always feel like I am abroad when I visit the Summerhouse. After 10 minutes you forget that you are in London and imagine you are somewhere on the seaside (yes I do know the difference between a canal and the sea). I guess the marine décor and the imaginative menu contribute to the perception change. Personable staff and always helpful when it comes to menu changes. So easy to park so a great option for someone who wants a hassle free night out. The serving sizes were acceptable."
    dined on 26/06/2013
  • "It's a perfect location and we picked a perfect day, bright clear sunshine on the river, great afternoon with good friends and good food & wine."
    dined on 22/11/2013
  • "We eat out in London allot. Although we had forgotten what it is like to dine at such a great establishment. Cold winter monday night, great ambience, brilliant cote de boeuf, and exceptional service - coats taken on entry, chair pull out for wife. Thank you Summer House, west London Oasis."
    dined on 25/11/2013
  • "Took the Top Table option of 50% of food but before ordering asked them if there are any restrictions on the 50% offer we were told there is no offers at this time and all offers had expired. I checked on my phone and showed it to him so he went away and said the 50% is for lunch only and clearly it was not so we accepted the 30% reluctantly. The food was good but they kept pushing us to order things we did not want time and again so we were a bit annoyed by their persistent on trying to make us order other items but we did not give in and ordered only what we wanted. While the food is good it is an annoying place to go and eat."
    dined on 19/11/2013
  • "The food is excellent all very fresh and cooked to perfection. The staff are extremely attentive but unobtrusive. And now it is going to be open throughout the year, you don't have to miss out experiencing this delightful restaurant"
    dined on 17/11/2013
  • "Simply one of my very favourites in London. I love the service which is nice and relaxed but not overly formal, great personal welcome. The place is very pretty and pleasant to linger in for hours at lunch."
    dined on 08/11/2013
  • "We had a lovely evening at The Summerhouse (even better with 30% off food offer) - started with the clam chowder and popcorn shrimps. Clam chowder was beautifully rich (very creamy/buttery and indulgent), popcorn shrimps were warm and crispy, and a good size of prawns with a sweet chilli sauce. Followed by monkfish (amazing) and lemon sole - very tender and tasty but too many potatoes! Chocolate tart with salted caramel ice cream and a bottle of light white wine rounded off a perfect evening here. Very attentive staff and lovely atmosphere; soft lighting but buzzing. Will definitely return!"
