A word from The Seashell of Lisson Grove
Marylebone restaurant The Seashell of Lisson Grove promises to fulfill the fish and chips dreams of any discerning London diner. This fabulous kitchen, according to food critic Alain Ducasse serves up ‘the best fish and chips in London’, which really is saying quite something in this old chip-happy town. The differences between The Seashell of Lisson Grove and your usual neighbourhood F&C peddler are too many and varied to list here but let’s begin with the décor; a superb combination of comfort and style, the space appropriately relaxed but still quite refined enough for special dinners or business lunching. Then of course there’s the location, in chichi Marylebone, close to the West End and London’s many sights and shops but still with the feel of a local restaurant.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The food is always good here . The service is done with a smile and nothing is a problem. We go here every month."
    dined on 11/04/2014
  • "The fish was cooked very well, the chips less so, they were undercooked. The staff were very attentive, knowledgeable and pleasant. Value for money? No, a tad over priced. The ambiance was possibily too bright although lights were dimmed later into the evening."
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "To get a really fresh piece of fish, cooked to a turn, there's few places more dependable than the Sea Shell. I've been coming since it was a little place down the road. I was worried when it moved up the road and into a bigger place that standards might drop, but it hasn't and I look forward to coming again and again. This last time was with some Koreans who had had 'some fish and chips' before. Their verdict was that it was simply delicious."

  • "Needed to find a posh fish & chip eatery for a work colleague who was leaving office to go on maternity leave and as she ws currently having a chip craving, we suggested a nice chip establishment would be to her satisfication. Service a little slow even though our office party of 8 were the only guests on arrival. Food, really couldn't fault it, very fresh fish and chips nice a cruchy just like we all enjoy it. Overall service was good although slow, but very pleasant and amiable staff on hand for top ups..."

  • "old school fish and chips done properly, the best mushy peas and curry sauce you could hope for. And the chips are 'bottomless' too, not that we had room to take full advantage of this offer."
    dined on 03/03/2014
  • "Went for lunch on Friday was moderately busy. Service was appallingly slow would not go there again for this reason. Food was OK but expensive"
    dined on 28/02/2014
  • "The tables were a bit tight in places and hence loud and no ambiance"
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "Fantastic fish and chips served in a clean environment with the benefit of a decent wine and beer menu. Service was very good. Mix of clientele at the time (Friday evening): families, couples, business party. Parking was easy. More pricey than usual for fish and chips but this is a fish and chip restaurant in its own (premiere) league!"

  • "booked for business dinner was given nice quiet corner as requested excellent service and food!"

  • "Having been here many times in the passed although always in the takeaway side, this time I ate in the Restsurant. The service was attentive, and helpful and enjoyed the evening. Thanks guys. Michael"

  • "At the time of our visit the restaurant was deserted and the service was average with little attention paid to our table. Overall though we were pleased with the experience."
    dined on 07/01/2014
  • "Specializzato in molte varietà di fish and chips, sicuramente uno dei migliori che abbia mangiato, ma anche caro rispetto alla media dei prezzi degli altri locali. il locale non ha molto di caratteristico"
    dined on 23/12/2013
  • "we had a wonderful meal. The bst fish, great chips, all first class"

  • "A very good expereince, although busy the staff were attentive and the service was good. The food was excellent we will certainly be going back."
    dined on 18/12/2013
  • "Excellent service. My grilled Halibut was ever so slightly over but I am being picky as everything else was top notch. Very generous portions so go hungry."
    dined on 20/11/2013
  • "Onion rings not delivered and no understanding of customer service. would be happy to pay the pricey menu but not at the level of service. get them to ring me and I will explain."

  • "We traveled by train from the Midlands to meet up with my daughter to celebrate my birthday. The restaurant was very convenient for Marylebourne Station, was accessible for me with disabilities and the atmosphere and ambiance were warm and friendly. The food was excellent and the staff very helpful. All in all it was a very happy evening and I shall recommend the restaurant to my friends, particularly if they are coming to and from London in a day on the Chiltern Line.It is a great meeting place."
    dined on 24/10/2013
  • "Firstly, I had booked via Toptable nearly a month in advance. When I checked my booking, a few days before we were due to go, as it was for an important occasion, they didn't have the booking! The service was really slow although the waiting staff were extremely polite. There was a group of us dining and although the restaurant was not full, our food took about 45 minutes to come to the table and what was worse we didn't get our meals at the same time. Two plates of fish & chips were brought out, five to ten minutes later another one or two plates would be served! I know there is a take-away attached to this restaurant so this may be the problem. This restaurant would not be my first choice for fish and chips in future which is a real shame."
    dined on 01/11/2013
  • "Good for a fish & chips. I personally don't care for this type of food- it was my first time eating fish and chips - but my (British) friends liked it. So I would recommend it for anybody who wants fish and chips!"
    dined on 23/05/2013
  • "Just well cooked food, good service, nice surroundings and well priced. Food from the take away looked equally good."
    dined on 19/10/2013
  • "Plaice fillet taste good, chips and onion ring is excellent!"
    dined on 19/10/2013
  • "went to restaurant on friday night with friend to have fish and chips with mushy peas ..was tasty not oily and mushy peas not tooo musshhy..we weren't rushed out of restaurant and were allowed to enjoy our meal at our pace..staff was helpful and toilets were clean and tidy everything worked.."
    dined on 12/10/2013
  • "very good fish and chips with lots of variations. I liked the aquarium corner we were sitting."
    dined on 12/10/2013
  • "Having eaten here often many years ago, I was pleased to find the fish and chips still of the highest standard. The decor is pleasing. We had a most enjoyable meal. The wine list is good (mostly French)."
    dined on 11/10/2013
  • "Always nice to come here as the fish is delicious!"
    dined on 15/08/2013
  • "Over priced for a Fish & Chip supper. Toilets down difficult stairs for seniors"
    dined on 26/09/2013
  • "This restaurant was suggested by the cabbie who took us from the airport to our hotel. We asked him for the best fish and chips in London. We also searched the internet some and this restaurant popped up. By FAR, the best fish and chips ever in my travels. Tender and wonderful fish, great chips. If back to London anytime, will eat there several times."
    dined on 24/09/2013
  • "The fish I had was moist fresh and delicious. The chips uninspiring - should be able to do better. First went here 13 years ago and it hasn't changed a bit. Maybe it should. Could do with a freshen up as not stylish enough to be classic or tacky enough to be quirky. So it is just tired. But the fish was fab."
    dined on 09/09/2013
  • "Generally very good. I know this is a fish restaurant and I expected that most of my guests would choose and enjoy a fish dish, but in case any of them preferred a meat main course I relied on a small selection of such dishes being available as listed in the menu on the website. However, it turned out that these were not available on the menu in the restaurant on the night. Fortunately all my guests were happy with the more limited choice which was available."
    dined on 04/09/2013
  • "It was a good experience to dine in the restaurant, in terms of the food it was fresh and taste good. The fish soup was a bit too salty, can reduce the salt level. Yet, if you walk into the take away shop just next to the restuarant, the price indicated was near to 1/2 the price of the restaurant serving the same food. This was a disappointment, only that no service was provided but we can just sit outside the shop, still quite comfortable."
    dined on 17/08/2013
  • "Mediocre - not worthy of the reputation, but not bad either"
    dined on 20/08/2013
  • "Brought my sister and her kids here for first time and they loved it! Does get a bit hot at the tables by the aquarium though and the kids got cranky after a short while, this is due to the spot lights they use in that area so wouldn't recommend sitting there in summer as it gets unpleasant."
    dined on 17/08/2013
  • "A Wednesday evening in late July: Got seated quickly, the restaurant wasn't so busy, and the staff were prompt to help with advice on the dishes available. The place worked well with the group we had, 5 adults and 2 11-year-olds. Nice casual atmosphere and it doesn't break the bank. Although one piece of fish that someone ordered seemed a bit damp rather than flaky, when we complained the dish was immediately taken away with apologies and we didn't wait long for a replacement (it wasn't a problem at all)!"
    dined on 24/07/2013
  • "It does what it says on the tin. Very good fish in pleasant surroundings. I go regularly for a good simple meal. The scallops are superb and the haddock is moist and cooked to perfection"
    dined on 29/07/2013
  • "The Seashell at Lisson Grove was recommended to me as the best Fish and Chip Shop in London so last Friday after a day out with a group of girl friends we decided to go and see. We were not disappointed with the food and the atmosphere was great. 4 of us had haddock and chips and the other person had Scampi - all meals were great and the added sides were good too. Only downside it took ages for us to get a drink when we first arrived and that always annoys me!"
    dined on 26/07/2013
  • "We enjoyed a lovely family meal with 9 people on a very busy Saturday night. The waitress was very attentive, although we had to wait quite a long time for the food to arrive, but it was very tasty and freshly prepared. Good idea to pre book a table otherwise you may have to wait a while on a busy night."
    dined on 20/07/2013
  • "Fish and chips is their specialty; we also had the fish cakes which were great. Good value, great service. A London classic."
    dined on 18/07/2013
  • "Been here a few times. Its still good and will come back but my favourite was the fish pie. Unfortunately its just not as creamy and buttery as it used to be. Fried battered cod still great as are chips."
    dined on 16/07/2013
  • "Pleasant fish and chips, well cooked but our entire experience marred by the rudeness and inefficiency of a youngish male East European waiter/host. My impression is that this restaurant only wants coach tour parties, not individual diners, so maybe let them get on with it, at least until this unpleasant staff member is replaced."
    dined on 04/07/2013
  • "I'd heard a lot about the Sea Shell but ended up somewhat disappointed. It's overpriced for what it is in my view. The whitebait starter contained the largest whitebait I've even seen. (Were they sprats?). My skate was encased in a very heavy batter and it was difficult to find the fish. My latte was luke warm. On the positive side, the service was very good and we felt well looked after. Our white Rioja was also perfect. However, I wouldn't book at this restaurant again as there's better fish and chips in London at a lower price."
