Diner Reviews
  • "Service attentive and intuitive without being intrusive. Food delicious and just the right amount - no tiny pretentious servings or overwhelming platters. Ambiance just right. We went at 4.30 for performance at 7 pm and it was perfect; we were not rushed or left waiting. I would thoroughly recommend the Rooftop Restaurant and will definitely be going again...and again."

  • "I was eating with my parents (aged 78&80). Very good ambience for them, calm and reasonably quiet with comfortable seats. Disabled toilet handy. The starters were average/acceptable. My mother had a mushroom vol-au-vont with pastry which was too tough for her to eat - she also burnt her tongue on the inside of the chips (had they been microwaved?) My father & I had chicken & salmon respectively - both good, but not remarkable. The puddings were the best part, particularly delicious vanilla ice-cream!"

  • "dining there was something very special for me and I really liked it."

  • "Just a very good meal all-round. We were booked in for 6 with a show at 7:30 (at a different theatre) on a Friday night, it was quite busy but not full, seated immediately and the service was friendly and helpful. The food was very good (both quality and speed), not very expensive at all."

  • "Having been advised that a 5.45 booking would be fine for a 7.15 play we had to rush mightily in the end. The Maitre D asked us about complimentary water as he showed us to the table, this was forgotten. The waiter took our starter and main order and had to return to check on one of the starters so they arrived separately! There was also another ask what mains and they arrived together but without the side order of chips by the time these were delivered most of the mains had been consumed whilst still at eating temperature. Having ordered the desserts one was delivered correctly the other wasn't but as there was now no time to insist on the order being corrected we ate what had been delivered. We did get a reduction of the bill."

  • "My first visit to the Rooftop Restaurant will not be my last, partly because of the excellent food and fine cocktails, but most particularly for the glorious service from the charming people who are working as waiters therein (who, clearly, in real life are actually actors - impossibly pretty AND efficient)."

  • "we were sat in a an area without any view - not what you expect from a "rooftop" restaurant"

  • "Excellent dining pre theatre. Cannot fault it. Adds that extra to a fabulous experience at the RSC. Will definitely come again."

  • "This is the second time we have eaten here for a pre theatre lunch and oce again, it did not disappoint. Stunning location, super service and wonderful food. The attention to detail is great and the complimentary bottled water much appreciated. The menu provides something for everyone and being gluten-free, I had a good choice of food, which was well labelled on the menu. Will definitely be back."

  • "Excellent, friendly staff - except'greeter' who was offhand to the point of rudeness. Outdated online menu (on basis of which we booked) does not match actual menu - disappointingly now much more limited. Portions quite small - but good quality. Need side dishes. Stunning venue."

  • "We had booked for 4 people at 1 pm on a matinee day so the downstairs areas were quite full and the ambience was great. Our table (as previously) overlooked the river and park, and as it was a sunny day there was lots to see. The waitress was very helpful and the service was excellent - attentive but not intrusive. The food was really good, lots of choice including a wholly gluten free option which is important for us. We had a very satisfying lunch and left well pleased."

  • "Menus mark up gf options and usually have gf bread."
    dined on 09/04/2014
  • "A most interesting menu, beautifully presented and served efficiently but without undue haste. For once, too, the wine list did not reflect outrageous prices. We were made to feel we were really wanted there, and I noted definite pride on what was being offered. The whole experience set of the evening's performance handsomely!"

  • "Having visited for the first time for my wife's 50th birthday in August, we returned for my 50th birthday in April. The service was slick but personable. The food and wine were excellent. The location allowed great views over Stratford and the surrounding countryside and quick and easy access to the theatre. Hopefully it will not be 50 years before we return!"
    dined on 04/04/2014
  • "Excellent menu with locally-sourced items. Excellent service and a real sense of occasion."
    dined on 27/03/2014
  • "As the sun went down and the theatre-goers took their seats my partner and I arrived for a pre-supper drink at the Rooftop Restaurant. It's a modernist, industrial vibe with brick walls, exposed metal beams, old and tattered theatre posters and metallic hanging lamps and theatre lights, but the views alone are worth the climb. From the balcony you can see across the gardens and the town, and the river frontage is excellent. Quiet tables by the window, individually lit, gave great experience of the evening sundown. Food was well presented and very tasty, with a good if predictable selection. Service prompt and unobtrusive. Definitely worth a visit."
    dined on 05/04/2014
  • "Prompt service for pre theatre dining. Food very good. Would have preferred a table with a view but not an option on online booking. Choice of 2/3 course set price menu. Enough choice for vegetarians as well as carnivores. Service friendly and efficient."
    dined on 05/04/2014
  • "Good food, good service. Convenient pre-performance dinner."
    dined on 05/04/2014
  • "I have eaten at the Rooftop restaurant on several occasions but the food really let it down on my most recent visit. Previously I had polished off every course without a morsel left but this time neither the starter nor the main were enjoyable. My companions struggled to find anything on the menu they fancied eating and when the chicken on a spring vegetable broth arrived it looked very grey and uninviting. Desert was the most delicious bit but I was rather hungry by then. I hope they change the menu before I go again."

  • "The welcome was excellent, our table had a superb view of the river, and the food and wine were very good. The service was friendly and helpful. The only downside was that although we had emailed beforehand to say we were going to the play there were two quite lengthy gaps in the service in the course of our meal. As a result we were unable to order dessert, and had to rush our coffees, only just making it to our seats in time. This was a bit disappointing in a theatre restaurant!"

  • "The vegetarian options were limited: the usual goats cheese offering. If you ordered the meat option it came with lots of veg. VEGETARIANS LOVE VEGETABLES! The service was not a high standard, the staff were hungover and they poorly dressed. Cutlery was dropped milk spilled on a mobile phone they didn't know which side to serve and were constantly knocking into furniture while serving. We had a the set menu but one member of the party was not well and only ate 1 course. We were charged for a two course meal by subtly adding on £2 or £3 onto other items listed on the menu.We thought this was very underhand. As a good will gesture the restaurant could have foregone the small amount of money it would have cost them to wave the one course."
    dined on 30/03/2014
  • "Very pleasantly met and seated. However intimacy is lacking although it is a theatre restaurant. Food was lovely but expensive. If you book near to your meal date don't expect a view of Stratford as most tables have a view of other diners & brick walls."
    dined on 19/03/2014
  • "The Rooftop restaurant manages to serve excellent food at a very reasonable price (still or sparkling water is complimentary) with very friendly service, and very fast to endure that you are finished in time for the performance. And if you can get a table furthest from the entrance the view across the river is wonderful."
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "Whilst the food was as delicious as ever, on this occasion we were seated in front of the coffee bar and the noise was hideous. Slow service, incorrect food orders and staff chatting around us made for an awful experience."
    dined on 30/03/2014
  • "We needed a last minute change to our booking and although the restaurant was absolutely full - Mothers Day - the manager went out of her way to facilitate our need. Thank you!"
    dined on 30/03/2014
  • "Unfortunately the staff werfe lacklustre and unattentive, getting the order wrong and over charging us on the bill. Expected better; they are sitting on a goldmine but not showing it off to it's true potential."
    dined on 30/03/2014
  • "we had booked a pre theatre meal .It ticked all the boxes a good meal , with no worries about timing .pleasantly served"
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "The menu is varied, food tasty, service a little slow and portions small. Tables too close together."
    dined on 27/03/2014
  • "We were disappointed with this visit to the restaurant. One main course was very badly thought-out with little colour and a vegetable which did not compliment the fish. We had to wait quite a while to order our dessert, despite the fact that staff knew we were going to the theatre. We told a member of staff on arrival that we had an RSC membership card, but initially the discount was not deducted from the bill."
    dined on 26/03/2014
  • "Had dinner here before a performance at the theatre and cannot recommend it highly enough the ambience was superb, service, second to none and the food was just wonderful, such great value this was our first time here but it certainly will not be the last. Please do give it a try, as you will not regret it"
    dined on 27/03/2014
  • "So convenient for the theatre but this restaurant offers much more. The menu is varied and offers a reasonable choice but the quality of the food and its presentation was perfectly matched by the quiet yet attentive service from all the waiting staff. We have already planned a return trip."
    dined on 24/03/2014
  • "I love the RST and a meal in Top Table before theater is a must. Great food, nice people, lovely views. See you soon"
    dined on 21/03/2014
  • "Friendly, efficient, hassle-free dining experience in preparation for a great theatre experience. Simple ingredients but beautifully presented and really tasty. Dining room is stylish and the view superb."
    dined on 25/03/2014
  • "Excellent food, good portion size, average value, great service from waitress - maitre'd rather arrogant but fortunately had very little interaction with him. Definitely recommend for formal Sunday lunch."
    dined on 23/03/2014
  • "The menu is interesting and we had a good choice of meals . The food was beautifully cooked and presented but I would recommend adding some extra vegetables and/or a potato dish - it's worth the additional cost. The wines we had by the glass went down very well as did the free sparkling water (nice touch). The waiting staff provided an excellent service from meet and greet to presenting the bill. A service charge is added to the bill and this was pointed out by our waitress who also added that we were free not to pay it as it is optional - an example of their lack of 'stuffiness'. All in all an excellent experience only eclipsed by Henry IV part 1."
    dined on 18/03/2014
  • "We so enjoyed the pre-theatre meal we had booked we decided to visit again the following evening. We were fortunate to obtain the last table. The venue is obviously popular and many people pre-book to get the window seats. The service was just about right, not too obtrusive but still attentive. The staff are chatty and when we asked for further information on some of the dishes this was provided without hesitation without having to consult any other colleague. The menu was different to others we had come across and a welcome change from chain pub meals, what you see on the poster appears on your plate type of meal. Patrons should note the inclusive but optional service charge. Food spot on - hope you keep the chef!"
    dined on 20/03/2014
  • "They even took into account a request when booking for a table with a view over the river."
    dined on 21/03/2014
  • "We visited The Rooftop Restaurant for the second time following a disappointing first experience. The food and service were greatly improved resulting in a much more enjoyable meal."
    dined on 19/03/2014
  • "Excellent venue and now the same standard of food to go with it. We went at mid day on a Friday in March and we were first through the door so had lots of attention; by the time we had finished the place was full Food was of a very good standard: mackerel and prawn rissole was very tasty as was the pork belly (although I prefer the fat a bit more crackly!) and the savoy cabbage and pancetta on the side was delicious. Sparkling English wine (East Ridge Blancs des Blancs) very good value"
    dined on 21/03/2014
  • "The outstanding feature of this restaurant as a pre-theatre diner is that the staff completely understand the tendency of the clientele to feel anxious about being late for the performance and go to great lengths to reassure everyone that there won't be a problem. And there isn't, thanks to the attentive and fast service. The food is also very nice."
