The Modern PantryUnexpectedly lovelyWas lured by the adverturous menu which - unusually for this kind of place - had paid as much attention to the vegetarian options as to the meat/fish. The odd review I read had implied it was a bit snooty but our experience was just the opposite. Friendly waiting staff, unobtrusive, happy to share thoughts on the menu etc. Lovely cool and calm space (1st floor restaurant) - not too noisy even when it got a bit busier.
And the food was gorgeous. As a veggie I'm used to feeeling slightly fobbed off by the single option usually available to me but this was delicious (and substantial!) Desserts were stunningly good. Have already recommended to others and am planning for a reason to go back.12/06/2013 00:00:00Fresh modernityNous avons eu la chance de trouver une table à la dernière minute un samedi soir. Nous sommes allés de bonnes à de très bonnes surprises. L'endroit est simple et élégant, le service jeune et décontracté. L'assiette est enthousiasmante : du choix, un style personnel, de la quantité et de l'originalité. Du pain béni.08/06/2013 00:00:00Saturday BrunchWent for brunch on a Saturday morning. Food was delicious! :) They even swapped an ingredient in the dish as we wanted a vegetarian option (chorizo to Halloumi). Service was great and staff really friendly. Would definitely recommend to people and will be returning for brunch and to sample lunch/dinner/afternoon tea in the future!08/06/2013 00:00:00Delicious and imaginativeRealy lovely meal with lots of unusual flavours in a really nice setting in clerkenwell. Food beautifullly cooked.04/06/2013 00:00:00Delicious!Lovely place with great food! Very enjoyable sitting outside in the summer sunshine!02/06/2013 00:00:00Book downstairsWhen we arrived it was a beautiful day and lots of spare tables downstairs, unfortunately, the online bookings are all upstairs. I prefer to sit near a open window and in natural light, so luckily there was a spare table upstairs next to the window which the waiter let us move too. I had the haloumi, roast tomatoes, and spinach, with scrambled eggs. They provided gluten free toast, which had seeds and was actually edible - so that was a bonus.02/06/2013 00:00:00Gluten free heaven...The gluten free options are clearly labeled. Interesting mix of ingredients, not like food at a standard chain. The waiter made good suggestions.01/06/2013 00:00:00This is my second time attendingThis is my second time attending the Modern Pantry and the food was delicious. Having previously never eaten a waffle I liked I was excited to try them! They didnt disapoint. They were amazing. We decided to have a brownie before leaving which unfortunately took 40 minutes despite asking several times in the interim. However, I was not in a hurry and doesnt take away from the fact that I would return without hesitation!01/06/2013 00:00:00Modern Pantry for lunch/brunchHave been to the Modern Pantry a few times and it did not disappoint.
Having recently visited Nopi for breakfast it was noticeable that MP offers a lot more choice and I would say, better value overall.
The upstairs dining room does get a bit toasty and so it was we chose brunch rather than lunch as had been planned.
Definitely recommend and some interesting combinations as always.01/06/2013 00:00:00Great meal as alwaysTook my parents for a Birthday meal, we were in the restaurant and initially on our own, but the ambiance was still good. The food as always was superb as was the wine.
.31/05/2013 00:00:00Fantastic place for brunchCame here for brunch on Bank Holiday Monday with friends and it was absolutely lovely. Food was delicious, and the setting is gorgeous. Highly recommend.27/05/2013 00:00:00Fabulous FoodWe greatly enjoyed the location, ambiance and most importantly the food. Sensational26/05/2013 00:00:00Bright food and atmosphereWe went for a simple option of eggs with haloumi/bacon - portions were huge! Dishes were not in any way fancy, but it was expected given the choice. Rest of the menu makes you want to come back and try it out - dishes going to other tables looked great! The menu also sounds more fancy than it in reality is, which is a positive - you can be sure to get some easy going bright food, in the equivalent atmosphere.
If you're going on a sunny day, make sure you book outside or at least downstairs, but for a rainy day second floor is amazingly bright with some fantastic paintings on the walls!26/05/2013 00:00:00Went for brunch-absolutelyWent for brunch-absolutely lovely. The restaurant was a little quiet but this was made up by the very well trained staff.25/05/2013 00:00:00Practically perfect1. Our service was better than any I've had in England. Anywhere. Our server was clearly concerned about our experience - when my partner's toast arrived charred, he had the kitchen send out a new serving without so much as a peep from us.
2. The restaurant itself is gorgeous - modern and homey at once.
3. Our food was delicious. I only wish the attached shop were open on the weekend, one of the house-made jams was to die for.
4. If you want a Bloody Mary with brunch, be aware: ours didn't come with horseradish (though a man at a table nearby clearly got some on request). They were, therefore, on the bland side. I would go for brunch bubbly instead next time. (Though next time I'll probably go for afternoon tea bubbly, to be honest.)25/05/2013 00:00:00Excellent breakfastExcellent breakfast - the poached eggs on Sourdough toast were excellent and the accompaniments were also great. Would happily breakfast here regularly.23/05/2013 00:00:00Food delicious but some dishesFood delicious but some dishes did not seem to have all the ingredients listed in description! Perhaps copy of menu should be left on table?? Understand that the ambience is laid back but dish presentation could be improved.22/05/2013 00:00:00unique, interesting and deliciousThe food was unusual but it worked - absolutely delicious and very good value. Highly recommended. We will definitely be back!19/05/2013 00:00:00Exceptional mainsBoth duck and lamb mains were extremely good and well worth the trip
Dessert good too but personally not that enamoured by clove biscotti but love chai ceeme brûlée17/05/2013 00:00:00Great brunch in LondonI loved this place - plain and simple! The food was amazing! Healthy, fresh and with a twist on some old breakfast classics! The staff made you feel welcome from the minute we walked in. If possible, get a table on the 1st floor, its a bit quieter. How to describe the interior? I wanted to move in and wished my apartment looked like that. Great ambiance. Overall, a great way to start your day with breakfast in London and well worth the visit! Only down side, it was a tad bit on the pricey side. Their home made ice tea, which was refreshing and had a great taste, was a bit pricey at 13 Pounds for a liter. But then again, you don't have to order it. :)11/05/2013 00:00:00A delightful explosion of flavoursI really enjoyed my meal. It's not often that you experience such wonderful ingredient combinations in both your starter, main and dessert! But there you have it - flavours that literally bounce off one another in your mouth to create something simply fresh and wonderful.
I wouldn't hesitate one second before recommending this restaurant!01/05/2013 00:00:00Lovely brunchWent to the Modern Pantry for Sunday brunch and had lovely cooked breakfast with fantastic coffee. There was a wide variety of meals to choose from, including hot and cold breakfasts. Really pleasant inside space to relax in, especially for a sunny morning- with bright rooms and nice outside seating area. Cooked breakfast with coffee and juice came to £15- good value for a weekend treat.28/04/2013 00:00:00Top foodFantastic well sourced food that tastes outstanding. Uncomplicated and worth going back for. The breakfasts looked amazing too27/04/2013 00:00:00One of my favourite restaurantsOne of my favourite restaurants in London. Stunning menu, fabulous food - always!27/04/2013 00:00:00Superb modern fusion cookingWe came for a lunch with my husband, his mother and our new baby. Although Modern Pantry does not seem to bill itself as a child friendly we were treated extremely well. The food was delicious, in particular the deconstructed cheesecake with pomegranate and they offered a lunchtime set menu that was very good value.
If you like modern fusion cooking like Ottolengi, this is wonderful and thoroughly recommended.23/04/2013 00:00:00FantasticFantastic food!!!! Everything that came to our table I wanted to eat and wished I had ordered. My food was fantastic and the gluten free bread was great!21/04/2013 00:00:00I had a delightful scone! There were two small green scones, each with a hint of green tea flavouring and speckled with sugar, sandwiching clotted cream with fruit jam.
Though small, it was delightful twist to a traditional scone (plain with a side of jam and clotted cream).
The restaurant was sophisticated: I could imagine many come here for a meeting over tea/coffee/snacks.16/04/2013 00:00:00Superb food but wine too priceyVery good food clearly prepared by a highly trained chef (indeed I understand she is a minor celebrity). Service was just right too. My only beef was that the house wine (well, they don't have a house but it's the cheapest) was £8 for a small glass. They call this a 'large' glass, but it really isn't. If they could put more in the glass for the same price, I wouldn't have any complaints.14/04/2013 00:00:00Best breakfast ever!We loved The Modern Pantry! Lots of people had recommended we had brunch here and we weren't disappointed. The menu has lots of different choices and something for everyone. Staff were really friendly and efficient. We will definitely be back to visit soon.13/04/2013 00:00:00Perfect late lunchWe had a great meal here on a Saturday afternoon. We chose from the all day menu which only had four choices, but each of the 3 we selected was of a very high standard, well presented and delicious. The staff are friendly and don't get in the way. The upstairs dining room is light and airy and simply decorated. We spent approx £45 per head with wine, this was good value for money. Recommend highly.13/04/2013 00:00:00Long, late lunch......at wonderful TMP only slightly marred by over enthusiastic waitress who came across as bossy rather than concerned...but the food as ever is wonderful and it is all just so much fun.12/04/2013 00:00:00Another quality breakfast optionI am a breakfast guy, and go around London in search of places that can make the perfect Eggs Royale as well as serve quality coffee, and a range of side items that express a healthy lifestyle.
Modern Pantry delivered all of the above, not quite at the highest standards that I have come across so far in my travels around the city, but on par with Coffee Workshop (a stone's throw away) and thus a good alternative option..
The service experienced was both prompt and friendly. The delivery of my breakfast was good, eggs were slightly too soft for my liking (and I still struggle to have halloumi) and was a bit disappointed that they didn't offer a Gluten-Free bread alternative, but otherwise sound results. Coffee Espresso was very good.10/04/2013 00:00:00Brilliant breakfastOnly ever eaten here for breakfast, but it is seriously great. Particularly the muesli with grated apple and yoghurt! Great service too, highly recommended.10/04/2013 00:00:00Best food I've had in a long timeThe food was inventive and absolutely delicious! Can't wait to come back!07/04/2013 00:00:00The food was fantastic (weThe food was fantastic (we had Sunday brunch) although presentation for some of the dishes was a bit poor. The waitresses were attentive and helpful, the floor manager was rather rude and slapped the bill on our table when our two hour slot was up without saying anything and walked away - we had not asked for it. After that we felt pressured to leave asap, I fully understand that there were people waiting for a table but an ounce of friendliness would have left us with a far better impression.07/04/2013 00:00:00My wife and I and a friendMy wife and I and a friend went for lunch on Sunday - but in the end all opted for the breakfast menu (+ dessert!) - probably one of the most difficult choices I'd had to make in a restaurant, as everything on the extensive menu looked tempting! Highly recommended!07/04/2013 00:00:00Always a pleasant meal, goodAlways a pleasant meal, good vegetarian options, lovely light space03/04/2013 00:00:00NiceNice restaurant with tables on ground and first floor. Private dining on first and second floor. Bathroom on second floor.
Brunch was really good. The one with bacon and eggs was delicious. The pancakes were really fluffy and good.29/03/2013 00:00:00Dinner at The Modern PantryI have eaten many times at the Modern Pantry both with family and friends, and each occasion has been just wonderful. The latest visit was to belatedly celebrate my birthday and what a superb meal. I have to say that neither my son nor I recognised some of the ingredients which is part of the magic of the restaurant but the food certainly delivered. Starters of duck leg with chickpea curry and braised pork shoulder were both unusual and flavoursome but the mains were even better. My son chose the spiced rack of lamb - perfectly pink and tender - while I had the superbly cooked onglet. The portions were so generous we only managed to share a pudding and we waddled home very satisfied with the food, service and the final bill.27/03/2013 00:00:00Excellent afternoon teaI selected the Modern pantry whilst browsing the web before a recent trip to London. My wife and I wanted to book a treat, and looked at the usual famous hotels etc. but the better variety of this establishment caught my eye. We were not disappointed, the range of sandwiches, scones, cakes and small granola was exquisitely produced, using unusual combinations, moving beautifully from savoury to sweet via a tangy filled scone. Well worth the money, only £20 including an alcoholic drink to start.26/03/2013 00:00:00Unusual brunchThe Modern Pantry is a bright, simply decorated open restaurant. I went with a group of friends to try the brunch menu on Sunday. The menu has many unusual dishes: rendang mince, feta and curry leaf waffles and cornbread with grilled chorizo with a poached egg as well as the tradition English Breakfast. All the food was lovely and a nice sized portion. Service was efficient and the restaurant and amenities were well kept and clean. I would highly recommend the Modern Pantry.24/03/2013 00:00:00We had a great meal at theWe had a great meal at the Modern Pantry on Friday evening. The food was sensational and the wine and cocktails were great! Very much looking forward to going back a second time!22/03/2013 00:00:00Imaginative, cosy, good locationWe very much enjoyed our evening in the Modern Pantry - it was my second time there. The menu is innovative but not outlandish. The service informal but not overbearing. The surroundings are stylish but not overdone. When the bill came we were surprised (it was good value for a individual and very enjoyable evening)21/03/2013 00:00:00Top Quality FoodThe pancakes with ricotta & berries is to die for. Also the cooked breakfast is beautfully done with perfect poached eaggs!20/03/2013 00:00:00Great atmosphere and tasty foodWe had a breakfast brunch at Modern Pantry with six people. As suspected the Saturday morning time slot meant two of our friends were almost two hours late for our booking! The staff were really nice about it and were able to shuffle another booking so we had an extra half hour when our hungover friends finally arrived. The staff were all helpful, our waitress was new so there were a few little blips, but she made a real effort to look after us. The food was delicious, deciding on what to have was a reall challenge, as it is great brunch menu. My one real criticism is that the drinks menu is pretty expensive, they were all small servings and still more expensive than other similar brunch places I have been to recently.16/03/2013 00:00:00Modern PantryReally good menu at the Modern Pantry, many recognisable dishes but with an unusual twist. I had fish n chips, but with wasabi mushy peas and spicy batter and cassava chips. Really nice ambience and informal but classy surroundings. Breakfast is also really good here.14/03/2013 00:00:00Nice venue for birthday brunchI took my partner here for his birthday as he wanted brunch and we'd heard good things about The Modern Pantry, and they didn't let us down. It's a small venue, intimate but lovely. The service was good, the food was delicious and it's good value for money (we did only go for brunch though). I would recommend this place to friends.09/03/2013 00:00:00We had afternoon tea at ModernWe had afternoon tea at Modern Pantry - was quaint and lovely. We sat upstairs, the atmosphere was lovely. Delicious food, champagne and tea.
Bit disappointing that the waitstaff forgot to bring us our change - we were planning to tip anyway, but didn't appreciate the presumption.
Highly recommended though!09/03/2013 00:00:00Great breakfast with a differenceHad a great breakfast at Modern Pantry, really unusual menu compared to the variations on the the full English you get in most places. The food was very good, well priced and I'd certainly recommend Modern Pantry to others. I'm certainly keen to go back to try a few more of the brakfast options and I'm sure it warrants a trip to the main restaurant as well.06/03/2013 00:00:00Although very friendly andAlthough very friendly and helpful, the service is a bit slow. However the food is phenomenally good, and so more than makes up for it.06/03/2013 00:00:00
