The Modern Pantry Clerkenwell Ratings and Reviews
Great afternoon tea
A very pleasant Sunday afternoon spent at the Modern Pantry. The afternoon tea was very good - a nice variety of non-traditional sandwiches and cakes. They weren't huge, which was a good thing...I was comfortably full without being stuffed. The service was excellent.
Excellent food, perfect setting
A great place to meet up with old friends - third time I've done so this year. Excellent food in a light, unflashy slightly austere setting. Ideal
Sunday at The Modern Pantry

The starters were sensational, and the main courses very good, at reasonable prices. Definitely one to go back to.
Lovely -always nice tastes to discover
I ve discovered the restaurant pore than 6 years ago ans it s still a London favorite -good and original food with fresh ingredients, great drinks list. The place becomes very lively as the evening goes on so do not expect a very calm atmosphere.

A great venue for foodies, but service can be mixed.
Tuesday lunch for 2.
I met a friend for lunch - I was initially sat right behind the entrance curtain, which meant my friend, on arrival, would have effectively been sat in the doorway (masked only by a curtain) - given I was early I asked to be moved - this seemed to cause a great deal of annoyance, however I did move 3 tables along which was far more suitable. The food was very good, the venue very nice, however, due to the surly and rather arrogant service I will not return, nor will I recommend this restaurant.
The delicacy of tastes for a brunch
It was the second time we went to the Modern Pantry for brunch and we have not been disappointed. The place is still nice and charming with a welcoming staff and lovely, cosy, homey decoration. The food is well prepared with a touch of genius in the mix of flavors and textures. They have an interesting and quite unusual choices of smoothies, I would definitively recommend that you try one of them. I don't know where they purchase their coffee, but one thing is sure, they have a great supplier and I hope they will stick with it. The coffee beans are not be burnt, but just well roasted, because the coffee is never bitter. Also, if you fancy a "boozy" brunch they also proposed nice cocktails. In short : I still recommend the place. We really enjoyed it and had a nice time with our friends.
Rude and unfriendly staff, a lack of care towards the food and fairly overpriced this is a restaurant relying on past glories. Avoid at all costs
Outstanding food. Very average service.
I eat here regularly. The food is always outstanding. The service is always decidedly average. If they could be quicker on service and more friendly it would be a fantastic restaurant.

I love the food at Modern Pantry; they do the more traditional "brunchy" choices, but also offer dishes with a twist. I strongly recommend the adventurous options - the flavours are excellent and well put together!
It was my first visit and won't be my last! A lovely relaxed but buzzy atmosphere. Great innovative food - we had pulled pork on plantain cake which was tasted superb. Deserts choice was disappointing.

Thank you for a lovely lunch! My good friend now loves you as much as I do. Bread and crispbread selection were spot on as were the prawn omelette and scallop. Brilliance was the sambal on top of the omelette - umami of the dish! But the most amazing thing was the deconstructed pumpkin cheesecake! Deliciously fun!!! Thank you!
Had been here a few years ago for afternoon tea which was excellent. Sadly not so this time around. Took my partner here for his birthday, informing the restaurant as such before hand and whilst I was there- despite telling me they'd write happy birthday/put a candle on his dessert they didn't. We were sat so close to the next door table it was difficult to get out and in. We were seated close to the front door that we were sporadically subjected to a cold draft every few minutes. The food wasn't bad but not worth the price, a starter of scallop literally with only one scallop seems pretty stingy for those prices. Again the lamb was a fatty cut, not the quality you would expect. The only saving grace was the delicious prawn omlette. Alas, we will not be going back.
Does not quite live up to what it promises
Restaurant does nice breakfasts, but lunch was somewhat disappointing (burnt/overdone main (not just my food), especially potatoes and meat; starter was quite extravagant though). Service was fairly rude both times I went. Still nice atmosphere both in the restaurant and in the outdoor area.
Starters 10/10, Main 10/10, Pudding 5/10
A lovely evening - the room upstairs is quite atmospheric. The waitress immediately agreed to our request not to be put in the back corner - so we had a much better table by the window. Lighting is good. The service is incredibly professional - not warm - but very efficient. The starters and mains for all of us were exceptional - flavoursome and beautifully presented. The wine choice was also very good and not unreasonably priced. The only disappointment was the puddings - the deconstructed pumpkin cheesecake which didn't taste of much and the chocolate option - which had delicious passionfruit ice-cream with it (the size of a 50p coin stack) but the chocolate sponge that was the main part of it was just not intensely chocolate enough for my liking.

Poor service. unaccommodating. went for afternoon tea to celebrate my birthday and everything about the experience from booking to getting an extra place setting was more difficult and unfriendly than it needed to be. Won't be going back.

Food was exellent but ambience a little too "everyday" for at Saturday dinner. Although the interior is nicely done.
Very good but not a leisurely brunch!
The food is lovely, and a bit different your usual brunch menu. We weren't in a hurry, so it was a but speedy for us, but no complaints!
great business breakfast venue
Great buzzy busy restaurant. Good food with a twist although why use vegemite when you can use Marmite!! My office is close by and I will be back
Wonderful meal and a good wine list. The food was well cooked with a superb balance of flavours. Seasoning was accurate. The dining area was overseen by a receptionist /manager who unintrusively directed waiting staff to deliver, enquire and top up drinks. An excellent staff member. Some of the wines were not the vintage on the menu.

Service terrible in this occasion! Such a let down from past visits.
Rude lady in front desk
Arrived for brunch with no booking to be told in a rude manner by the lady on the front desk that they had no tables. Went outside and checked online with my phone. They had a table so booked and went straight back in and was seated by the rude lady who then just scowled. Would have gone elsewhere but the food is good.

Great food and venue, service could be better
Can't fault the food - the brunch menu is interesting, delicious and varied – lots of healthy options on offer too. Everything was cooked perfectly, pretty decent portion sizes and the coffee was awesome. Service could definitely have been better though. While it wasn't particularly slow, there was hardly any welcome or help to our table, only a hand gesture given when asked where the toilets were, it was a struggle to get someone's attention to place our order, we kept having to ask for tap water to be topped up, and no one bothered showing us out. A smile wouldn't have gone amiss either! Small things, yes, but they add up, and at a place like this we would have expected a little more. Service is improving in London so it's becoming more noticeable when it's absent! I should point out that the guys on the bar were much more friendly and welcoming.
As always, a great experience at The Modern Pantry. Service was perhaps over-attentive, we were asked four (4!) times if we were ready to order food within approximately 10 minutes. I appreciate table space and turns are important to the restaurant but we were still well and truly finished inside the usual two hour window without needing to be rushed through. Even more so, a Sunday brunch should be the quintessential relaxed dining experience that allows you time to catch up with friends seen far too infrequently in increasingly busy London times. We love this place and they did cook the eggs perfectly for my pregnant wife and the food was well prepared and well presented. Will definitely return.
Good food, questionable service
Food was very good, nicely presented and served. My partner and I had a rather late dinner around 9pm on Friday night. Restaurant staff was occupied with closing procedures and this was their main focus. Each time we wanted another glass of wine or a dessert menu we had to make a lot of effort to get waiter's attention. There was a very long waiting time for the main course, about 25 - 30 minutes. The restaurant was half-full. I can't imagine what it would have been like if they had a full hose... .

This was not my first time at this restaurant and have to confess I have had better meals before this one. Not sure I will return.
Not at all as expected
I'd usually highly recommend the Modern Pantry but on this occasion I ate uncooked egg whites, which I find nauseating. I did tell our waitress and she took them back to the kitchen without a fuss but they arrived back only slightly better. I removed the worst bits and ate them. I can't say I enjoyed my food at all. At no point did anyone bother to check if the food was ok, or if we wanted anything else. Not great all round.
Great food, terrible service
The food was interesting, delicious and well presented. Service was inattentive and lacklustre. An otherwise lovely dining experience.
Service needs to improve
My fiancé and I arrived about 15 minutes earlier than our reservation time of 3pm for afternoon tea and they wouldn't serve us the tea from our afternoon tea set (even though we asked) until about 25 minutes later. So we sat down without even water for 25 minutes. Charming place and tea sets look cute but I'd prefer a place who cares about their customers more than following the time so strictly.
Whatever the pantry is full of, it's delicious
This is not my first visit to The Modern Pantry, and I arrive, unfortunately, without a huge appetite. I turn this to my advantage, however, by going overboard ordering small plates, instead of a main course. Everything my friend and I taste (we share all plates) is simply delicious: roast courgette, pea, leek and feta fritters with roast tomato & golden raisin curried yoghurt; aubergine dengaku, pickled shimeji and enoki, mushrooms and Thai basil cress; salmon sashimi, truffled mustard seed and soy dressing, fennel flowers and yuzu tobiko; smoked burrata, muscat grapes, pomegranate roast red onions, sourdough toast, sherry vinegar and argan oil dressing; sugar-cured New Caledonian prawn omelette, smoked chilli sambal, green chilli, spring onion and coriander. All, quite simply, delicious, and especially when rounded off with the lightest, most aromatic of desserts, a poached peach with buttermilk cremeux, grapefruit sorbet, and puffed wild rice (this last ingredient adding an especially interesting twist in flavours and texture). Excellent as always.
Brunch with a few twists!
Had a booking at 2pm on Sunday so slightly surprised to be faced with a brunch menu, but we weren't disappointed! Highlights included spiced prawn omelette with Indonesian sambal, an amazing hollandaise with a new to me fruit that gave it a citrus tang … that was delicious! Menu a broad mix of brunch staples done really really well, and some innovative different flavours. The same approach followed through to puds, and drinks! Really good.

The food was amazing and ambience of the restaurant was warm and relaxing for a Sunday brunch. Would definitely recommend and would definitely visit again
We had gone to the Modern Pantry for a treat. Sadly my partner's food was lukewarm and not cooked as he had asked. The table nearby was particularly raucous, and there was a lot of loud laughing. Perhaps groups and couples could be seated some way apart, because it really spoiled my evening. The waitress seemed very disappointed when we did not order desserts, and I left the restaurant feeling as though I had wasted my money.
We were seated by a charming girl from the reception . However after 20 mins of being ignored by all other staff we left!
Great food Slow service
Went for a civilised " stag " celebration with my future son in law and four others. Everyone enjoyed the food when it came but it was the slowest service I have had in a very long time, without much attention while we were waiting.
Great food, great service, friendly staff, great value. Went for brunch and the menu was fantastic, totally different from anywhere else I'd been for breakfast. All tables were full and everybody seamed to be enjoying themselves! Only two very minor things I'd change- the coffee to be hotter and maybe a few more soft furnishings to absorb some of the ambient noise! Apart from that the Modern Pantry was perfect.
Great food but standard of service has slipped
I have been to Modern Pantry on a number of occasions and have always been impressed with the service, food and atmosphere. I am afraid to say that after my last visit, it is unlikely that I will come back. The food is still amazing, no question about that. However, the service was very poor. It was not a busy night, yet it took over 20 mins for someone to take our drinks order and then a further 10 mins to get them. Water was rarely topped up on the table and we were not asked at any point if we wanted any more drinks. It also took a very long time for them to then take our food orders. For a restaurant of this standard, this is really unacceptable.
