The Laughing GravyUnexpected find!I booked this place for a last minute celebratory dinner based on it's proximity to another venue, so I didn't really have any expectations. The LG blew me away! The food was unbelievable (I am still dreaming about my venison wellington) and although the menu isn't massive, it was still hard to choose - everything sounded amazing. I had a dessert (some chocolate, peanut mousse tower thing) which was definitely the most delicious dessert I have ever had in London. The service was attentive but not over-bearing and the whole ambience was quirky but refined and a whole lot of fun. Heartily recommend.10/06/2013 00:00:00Really enjoyed it. LovelyReally enjoyed it. Lovely food and wine. Very friendly and helpful staff. Will def recommend to friends and will be very happy to go again.08/06/2013 00:00:00Excellent food and serviceBooked Laughing Gravy based on online reviews and access to Globe Theatre. Proved to be an excellent choice, welcoming atmosphere, very prompt and friendly service, appealing menu and the food was great. Vegetarian in party was well catered for and everyone in our group ordered something different and enjoyed their meal. We had three courses and enjoyed each one AND made it to the theatre in plenty of time. A great find!08/06/2013 00:00:00DeliciousLovely restaurant, delicious food. A great little find. Thoroughly recommend. Will definitely go back!!!30/05/2013 00:00:00A local gemHaving lived in the area for just over seven years, it's always good to discover a new favourite. That's what The Laughing Gravy will be to us. The cherry foie-gras starter was particularly good, reminiscent of Blumenthal's 'Meat Fruit'. Deserts were worth not ordering sides for. You'll want to save room for them. They also know how to make an excellent espresso martini which for some reason can be a rarity in London.18/05/2013 00:00:00Local Pub Re-energisedThe decor and ambiance at The Laughing Gravy on a Friday night was both welcome and appealing. The restaurant, with a small bar area, was very busy and you could tell that the majority of guests were really enjoying themselves. The proprietor is very friendly, passionate about his self-imposed task of having saved the pub from closure and making it into something quite special. We were a little concerned about the 2 hour table slots as we had hoped to veg for a good few hours and this ended up not to be a problem. Food is not gourmet but neither are the prices. Overall a really nice experience.17/05/2013 00:00:00The Aristocrat on the LaughingGravyIt takes a lot to please me in that I've travelled to circa 34 Countries in Europe Middle East and Africa and have dinned in, well simply put, loads of restaurants. The LGravy impressed me! Superb food so well done Chief Chef and Team!
The Aristocrat16/05/2013 00:00:00Lovely birthday lunchI had booked this restaurant to treat my friend to a birthday lunch. From the moment we arrived we were at ease with cool background music and the library was a nice touch. The staff were attentive but not obtrusive. The menu was very varied and we both enjoyed our choices - the fish. Eventhough we were the last to leave the staff were courteous and didn't hurry us. All in all a very enjoyable way to spend a Saturday afternoon! I would definitely recommend The Laughing Gravy!11/05/2013 00:00:00Quality food and a relaxed vibeLaughing Graving is a great little restaurant - fantastic food (most especially the desserts - I highly recommend Salted caramel fudge and shortbread filled chocolate cylinder) and a great wine list but also it has a very informal/cosy feel and the service is friendly and down to earth. Highly recommended.11/05/2013 00:00:00Super meal. Tasty, well presentedSuper meal. Tasty, well presented food and very good service. Recommended.11/05/2013 00:00:00Southwark's best kept secret? We ate here before going to The Old Vic for which it is ideally located. I was expecting a gastropub but it is more like a bistro inside, with wooden floors and bare tables. Very welcoming staff. The chef clearly cares deeply about the food which is top-notch, fresh and locally sourced. We were offered tap water rather than bottled water which is always a thumbs up for me. Service was prompt and friendly. Good range of wines. Pleasant jazz softly playing in the background. Highly recommended - worth a trek across town - and well sited for the South Bank.04/05/2013 00:00:00Worth a walk from the South BankGreat food and solid service in a really friendly, cost restaurant close to Waterloo and the South Bank. Starter, main, wine and coffee came in at £50 a head for a group of 4 - pretty good value given the quality of the food. Would highly recommend.03/05/2013 00:00:00Best seabass ever!!We sat outside on what was a beautiful hot sunny day and the ambience was just wonderful. We shared a starter of belly pork and sausage roll - heavenly! I had stone bass which was the best I have ever tasted - the sauce was superb and it was one of those meals that you can't stop thinking about. The wine was great too and I would and will probably go back again. Inside was really welcoming aswell and I imagine an evening meal there would be just as good an experience. Very friendly, but not overly, staff. Prices are what you would expect to pay in London and this was worth it.03/05/2013 00:00:00Great find near WaterlooI was looking for somewhere individual near Waterloo station and was delighted to find The Laughing Gravy. There was an excellent choice of food and everything coming out looked good - we were all happy with our choices. Desserts are amazing so save some room! The service was friendly, efficient and personal - my pregnant friend was asking lots of questions which the waiter took the time to answer, and check with the kitchen. We'll definitely be back.02/05/2013 00:00:00Great food, would def recommend...Food is very good, great menu... good service... go try it!01/05/2013 00:00:00Tasty and FriendlyGreat spot to take friends, enjoy lovely food and not have to shout. Highly recommend the venison wellington.29/04/2013 00:00:00Good food and really relaxing5 of us went here for sunday lunch - there was a choice of two roasts and numerous brunch choices. The food was really delicious - the beef some of the best I've had. Desserts were delicious too. There's something incredibly relaxing about the atmosphere of the place, it isn't on the most preposessing road in London but - having initially planned to find a restaurant near the Southbank - we all felt it was so much more relaxing than in the hustle and crowd you inevitably get there. The service was really good - really helpful and friendly, the food was a tiny bit slow coming but it didn't matter as the place had such a nice ambiance it was nice just sitting, drinking the wine which was very good and chatting. I'd absolutely recommend it.28/04/2013 00:00:00Imaginative food and good ambienceMy wife and I ate here before going to the Young Vic nearby. We had previously seen good reviews of the restaurant so chose it from the many nearby. We were very happy we did so. The room has a relaxed and airy feel and unfussy decor. The service was attentive throughout the meal without being obtrusive.
The menu has many choices I have not seen previously and the choices we made were very high standard and very attractively presented. The wine list has a range of choices, some perfectly affordable.
I would strongly recommend the Laughing Gravy.26/04/2013 00:00:00Anniversary mealLocation was great (5 mins walk, if that, from the tube station). We were greeted by very friendly, relaxed but efficient staff and offered either a seat at the bar or at a table nearby. The space around the bar was very limited as part of the bar was taken up by various bar equipment but it served its purpose as somewhere to have a pre-dinner drink. Our food was presented beautifully and tasted gorgeous. Our waiter was attentive but not over the top. All-in-all we had a lovely night, the atmosphere was cosy and relaxed. It's somewhere you could eat wearing relaxed or 'dresse-up' clothes and still not feel out of place. Definitely would go there again.26/04/2013 00:00:00Excellent Restaurant withExcellent Restaurant with lovely friendly staff who have a good knowledge of the food on offer22/04/2013 00:00:00Good, but a bit pricey....Food very good, Service OK.
Venue Nice - good place for a lazy Sunday.21/04/2013 00:00:00Really nice ambiance and food.
TheReally nice ambiance and food.
The desserts are outstanding
The service is very Good and organized
I had a giant burger that was very good
I am coming back for sure18/04/2013 00:00:00Suprising Little GemTucked away by southwark tube, The Laughing Gravy gave us a wonderful Sunday Lunch. The staff were cheery, and genuinely looked like they were having as much fun serving the food as we had eating it. I had the Sunday Roast Beef, which I can highly recommend, particularly with the, made fresh to order, mayonnaise. Likewise my father said he had probably the best burger of his life.
All in all I can not recommend this place highly enough.
Will be back again soon!14/04/2013 00:00:00Good food and setting in SouthwarkVery relaxed environment. Not too noisy so perfect for having a good chat over dinner. Service was excellent and the food was great. Definitely a gem in South East London. We were the first diners in at 7pm so would recommend booking slightly later as that's when the atmosphere picks up.08/04/2013 00:00:00Was very pleased with thisWas very pleased with this choice - good proximity to Old Vic and Waterloo Station - some really interesting dishes and eclectic wine list06/04/2013 00:00:00Order the burgerHad a lovely meal here with mum and the boyfriend. I had the burger (tall, arrives on a wooden board, 60p supplement to have truffle oil chips instead of regular, etc) which was fantastic, companions both had the cep hash. Cep hash was perfect for mum, but the boyfriend wished he'd ordered a side, as it's a smallish dish (the staff did suggest doing this). Really nice bottle of Malbec set us back £25. There's also a bar area where you could get a drink and informal food. Loved the casual/trendy decor - all stripped wood and brickwork, with a piano next to the table. Bill came to £71 for three mains, no sides and one bottle of wine. Would have liked to have tried the lamb - saw another diner eating it; it looked great.30/03/2013 00:00:00Lovely Laughing GravyEnjoyed a fab 3 course meal, my partner had the best scotch egg starter and beef wellington and I loved my lamb shanks. Service was excellent and we will definitely be coming back.26/03/2013 00:00:00goodWe had a nice meal at laughing gravy, but I wouldn't say it was fantastic. A little expensive, but food was very well presented and staff and ambience were second to none. My biggest issus was the wine list. Very pricey and the 2012 melbac we had was drinkable but not worth £24. Could probably buy a similar bottle in waitrose for £7-8.
I had a nice night, but probably wouldn't go back, however I still think others should give it a go.26/03/2013 00:00:00Fantastic food, and so wellFantastic food, and so well presented. The chicken liver and fois gras "cherries" were incredible- what an eclectic and fun presentation! The salmon appetizer was tasty but a bit skimpy on size. Our mains included the most tender venison wellington- just med rare and no knife needed...it was like cutting into a cube of butter. The goats mac n cheese with pancetta was to die for, but so very rich! The haddock cake was very generous in size and again tasted wonderful. Indeed us foodies swaped forks all evening. The decor is rather bland, and the location plain strange, but it's SO worth the trek there. Mind you, closer into town and the prices would skyrocket. For the quality the prices are very good. I would go again. In a heartbeat.18/03/2013 00:00:00Great dining! The unique issue was the noise of a big table...for the other things, all was perfect! The food was very good and refined in the preparation. Prices were ok for the high quality. Competent (and pretty!) waiters!12/03/2013 00:00:00Good all round experienceWe were a table of 5 for a reservation at 8:30pm on a Friday night. The restaurant was full up and was very lively. Our waitress was friendly and patient with us, as we steadily made our way through a few bottles of wine. Portions were on the smaller side, but the food was very good indeed. We had a vegetarian at the table and they were well catered for too. Would recommend. Allow £50/head for a couple of courses and wine.08/03/2013 00:00:00The food was excellent andThe food was excellent and so was the service. Good, but not cheap, wine list.02/03/2013 00:00:00Saturday TreatLovely restaurant, friendly staff and very good food, washed down with very good and reasonably priced wine. South East London is crying out for more restaurants like these. Long may it continue to prosper. Will be back!!02/03/2013 00:00:00An excellent Saturday night mealWe thoroughly enjoyed a post-theatre dinner at the Laughing Gravy on Saturday night.
The starter of confit pork belly is recommended (although all the starters were good). The lamb main course was delicious - in fact there were no "duds" at all in the menu. The food total for 4 of us came to less than £120 - 3 courses for 2 of us and 2 courses for the others - a very reasonable amount for such good food. Of course, our final bill was bumped up by a large amount of alcohol.....23/02/2013 00:00:00Great restaurantGreat service & atmosphere, loved it. £100 for 2, 2 courses. They even brought a cake for the birthday girl!21/02/2013 00:00:00V Good Sunday LunchGood food, service, etc. Pleasant pre-cinema lunch. Part of an all round great day!17/02/2013 00:00:00I regularly visit the LaughingI regularly visit the Laughing Gravy and can safely say that it is one of my favourite restaurants.
I would very much recommend the home made bread!17/02/2013 00:00:00Lovely foodMy third time here and the best. The prices seemed a bit higher, but the food was even better. Tough to choose from a very enticing and original menu.09/02/2013 00:00:00Laughing gravy - very goodLovley food, reasonalbe prices (wine too), friendly service, nice comfortable gay straight mix, - what more could you want!08/02/2013 00:00:00Lovely dinner with a friendBooked a Friday evening dinner here on the recomendation of a friend and strength of the reviews and wasn't disappointed. Food was imaginative and very well prepared, service efficent and friendly and ambience relaxed and welcoming. Only complaint would be my first two choices of wine were unavaliable (an apparent run on South African red) but the replacement offered was very good and no more expensive. Overall a lovely evening, I've already rebooked for a family birthday.25/01/2013 00:00:00Worth A VisitThis is my second visit this month, can't believe the restaurant has been there for so long and I've only just discovered it! The food again was delicious, a very enjoyable Friday lunch with a friend.24/01/2013 16:00:00Another fab eveningI discovered The Laughing Gravy through Trip Advisor. What a find! Very friendly and helpful staff. Great menu- really struggled to choose as there were so many interesting choices. All food cooked brilliantly. Have already had a return visit ( we live 50 miles from London) and will definitely be back again.18/01/2013 16:00:00Lovely place, lovely atmosphere,Lovely place, lovely atmosphere, lovely food! Will definitely go back, really nice and relaxed, would be great to spend a long, lazy Sunday here. :)18/01/2013 16:00:00A Great DiscoverySearched for restaurants near Waterloo and gave the Laughing Gravy a try for Sunday lunch last weekend. The best roast we have eaten out in a long time, delicious food, attentive and friendly service, Already planning to go back with a friend in a couple of weeks time.05/01/2013 16:00:00Excellent!Four of us visited The Laughing Gravy for Sunday lunch. We were asked to wait for a while to the table but the service was excellent as usual. This restaurant is one of our favorites and we have never been disappointed. Sunday roast in this restaurant is one of the best.05/01/2013 16:00:00Very TastyGreat food, great service, great prices, can't fault it. we were there for an early dinner before a show so it was a bit quiet but it livened up a lot towards 7. Want to go back again!27/12/2012 16:00:00Worth a repeat visit!I went to the laughing gravy with a group of friends and had a lovely evening. It was close to Christmas so pretty busy but on the whole it was a great night out. My only criticism is the service was a bit slow and by the time we ordered sweets we'd been pretty much ignored for half an hour. It wouldn't put me off going again though as the team were really accommodating when we didn't like the rose wine recommended and gave us four whites to try instead. Also one of our group was vegetarian and had only been in there a few days before so I ask if she wanted me to book somewhere else - she didn't which is a testament in itself! Definitely recommend.14/12/2012 00:00:00Lovely food and great serviceReally enjoyed the food here - it deserves it's toptable top rating - have recommended it to friends for a post christmas get together so looking forward to trying it again then!10/12/2012 16:00:00Excellent meals and frindly serviceWe went to The Laughing Gravy with family members for Sunday Lunch. As usual, the food was tasty (we had Sunday roast) and the staff was very friendly and attentive. We keep going back there as this is our local restaurant and one of the best.02/12/2012 00:00:00Excellent little placeJust loved everything about this place. Great service, great food and great value overall. I would be pleased if I lived closer, but will definitely visit again on my next trip to London. Have put a review on Trip adviser and will recommend to friends.29/11/2012 16:00:00
