Diner Reviews
  • "We almost wanted you to remove the Laughing Gravy from toptable so it doesn't get too booked up, but that would be very selfish! The menu was just about the right amount of choice, with good vegetarian options. Started with a glass of champagne and then both had three courses, all of which were not only absolutely delicious but presented beautifully. The atmosphere, even early on in the evening, was buzzing. All the staff were very nice, polite but fun as well and happy to have a chat whilst reccomending their favourites. I have been recommending to friends all weekend as a real gem of a find. 10 minutes from Waterloo, just behind the Old Vic, very easy to find."

  • "I've been here for lunch before and decided it was such a super place that I'd like to go back and visit with friends / family for my birthday - we had the most fantastic dinner on Friday evening! The food, the service and the ambience were all spot on. It's quite a vibrant place to hang out (there are no soft furnishings so it tends to be very noisy) - perfect for a Friday night outing but not necessarily for a romantic tete-a-tete."

  • "We were planning a trip to London from the US. Read the reviews online and decided to book before we left. The reservation booking was very easy and we received reservation reminders ahead of time. They were ready for us when we got there. The staff was very welcoming and accommodating. The atmosphere was modern and charming at the same time. Food was great! Loved the guinea fowl and smoked Haddock cake. Would recommend to friends."

  • "We were looking for a tourist-free restaurant with good food for our Saturday night stay in London. This fitted the bill exactly. The food was excellent and good value. The atmosphere was lively but not overwhelming. Would definitely recommend."

  • "Very good restaurant but very noisy, it is better to come rather late in the evening."

  • "We booked a birthday meal with the Laughing Gravy and whilst we weren't disappointed - it perhaps wasn't the best choice we could have made with our 7 year old twins! Our booking was confirmed on the morning of our stay in London, and we were told that there wasn't a children's menu but the main menu could be tweaked to suit our needs. We have very mature eating children who like most things - just not in huge portions! Unfortunately the menu couldn't be tweaked, and so the children ended up sharing a burger and fries as smaller portions weren't able to be made up in the kitchen!?! The fish dishes that my husband and I ordered were delicious and so too was the bottle of wine we drank. Overall though very overrated and over priced!"

  • "We went on the recommendation of a friend. The restaurant was a little further walk down from the Thames than I had imagined and was in a very dull part of London, however, it was lit up like a fairy tale and once you stepped inside you forgot where you were. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the food was rather unique in its combination but extremely tasty although I felt the portions could have been a little larger. It is something a little different from the main chains and I would recommend it."

  • "Wow. That is the only word to describe the food at this place. It was absolutely fantastic. I had the rabbit and crayfish duck's egg scotch egg followed by the most devine venison wellington - I can't remember the last time I had such a good meal. I would have gladly eaten it all again, had I enough room. I'm already planning my next visit."

  • "The waitress serving us was not polite and also grumpy."

  • "Good value, high-quality local independent eaterie with slightly quirky ambience and varied menu. Camden beers on tap highly appreciated. Tasteful music, not too loud. Friendly staff but service a little sluggish on this visit altho not busy. Try it."

  • "After a very bad experience on my previous visit the owner emailed to say a bottle of wine was on him on my next visit. I decided to give this place one more go after the shocking service, bill came less a bottle of wine. nice touch I thought, then an hour after leaving I was called by the manager to tell me I had not paid the full bill and it was my responsibility to make sure the bill is correct not the restaurant. I found this very sad and some what shocking. The manager should also learn to leave her ciggys behind the bar as its not nice being served food by someone who has a packet of Camels and a lighter poking out of her oh so tight jeans. Good food but the service is just so wrong. Dont bother there are much better near by."

  • "Considering it's a bit off the beaten track, this place is absolutely peerless. It looks beautiful as soon as you walk in - sofas, candles and books, and it's a lot bigger than you'd think from the outside. The menu is smallish but has a really good variety - something for everyone I would have thought. Everything was so beautifully presented, from the cocktails we started with to the food. I had the pork belly to start but it was not at all as one imagined or maybe had had before; the menu description simply does not do it justice. But the best bit was the venison Wellington - lost for superlative words. Could not manage dessert but partner had the salted caramel affair and would not share or even speak while she ate it - mean!"

  • "Dinner was a nice mix of traditional Brittish cuisine wth a modern touch. I had the lamb dish; full of flavour and juicy meat, really enjoyed it. Two critical remarks; We visited on a saterday evening so the place was full, although this makes for a lively decor it was also a bit loud as the acoustics are not ideal. Also, although I loved the main course I wasn't too happy with the ending. The dessert was more like a disembled mars bar (way too heavy) and the espresso was a little sour. Overall; including a really nice wine, the total price was ok for London standards, so if the minor flaws in finishing details are brushed up this is a really nice place to go for a decent dinner."

  • "Just back from Mothers' day Sunday lunch and had a brilliant time - incredible roasts. Tender meat. Massive portions. And the staff really made it special for mum. can't wait to go back"

  • "I can't believe I have never heard of this place or that it has somehow been missed by the critics. The food is very different from the norm and other than the dessert which was a bit too sweet for me (but would no doubt have pleased real dessert lovers) was excellent. Not too pricey and with a good varied wine list at all prices and some really nice cocktails too, this was a real find. We will definitely be back."

  • "We went on a Monday eve for dinner and the food was really good. The venison wellington was amazing! Nice decor and ambience and the staff was super friendly and helpful. All in all, a great little gem of a restaurant off the beaten track from Waterloo/Southwark. Would definitely recommend!"

  • "Food quality very good but overpriced for the portion size that you receive - especially the tomato salad. Service good but not amazing....feel that you are being hurried along. Nice decor and atmosphere."

  • "A small, bustling, lively place with quirky decor and furniture. Nice welcome and service throughout the meal. The braised guinea fowl was delicious, different, nicely presented and a generous portion. My partner's lamb dish was cooked exactly to her preference. We've eaten here before and can't wait to return."

  • "The food was great and not too badly priced. The overall bill wasn't cheap as drinks bumped it up - it was still worth it though. The only downside was that we had reserved a table and arrived 5 minutes early. We ordered a drink at the bar while our table was being 'set up'. However, 25 minutes later I had to ask if the table was going to be much longer (there were several empty 2-seater tables set up ready to go) and at that we got seated... but were very hungry by this point!"

  • "We had dinner here, four of us aged between 35 and 65. We were welcomed, shown straight to our table and they offered to explain the menu. Several different meals were chosen but everything was excellent. Service was about the right speed for us as we wanted to talk and the waiters were more than helpful and polite. The staff helped to make it a very enjoyable experience. My son did not like any of the starters and asked for mashed potato which they happily supplied, one of the main courses was considered not hot enough and was immediately replaced. The toilet was very clean. The only thing I would say was that we were at a round table and my partner is a bit aurally challenged and had trouble hearing some of the conversation."

  • "Excellent service and great food, would definitely recommend to friends and visit again. Couldn't fault the main courses and puddings were amazing."

  • "Having read several good reviews of The Laughing Gravy, I made a Sunday brunch reservation for 11, one of the only times available online. We were alone in the restaurant until 12 or so, which only made the service more laughable. After being seated, it took 20 minutes to be offered something to drink, with the 4 or 5 wait staff present chatting and cleaning and paying us absolutely no mind. Two black coffees took another 10 minutes. Food was perhaps another 10. When we did interact with our waitress she was rather curt. Our food was good-tasting, but not at all exciting. My waffle was soggy and a scotch egg served with a few greens on the side is *not* worth 8 pounds. The burger was fine enough, nothing to write home about."

  • "Hoping for a relaxing pre-theatre supper, we were unable to understand the attitude of the staff who, in a virtually empty restaurant at 6pm, showed us to a table for two right next to the loos and the kitchen door. We said we would like to sit somewhere else and were told this was not possible, it was only when we pushed the point and said we would be out before 7.30 that they relented and put us on a decent table....why? Having said this, the food itself was excellent and it is a shame that this was somewhat overshadowed by the service...."

  • "we choose to eat here due to the good reviews. The restaurant was lively and very popular. We choose to have a standard burger from the extensive menu. Not the best we've ever had but very nice. The dessert however was excellent a real mixture of complementing textures and tastes. and the wine list was extensive and had bottles at all prices. If you want a buzzy place to eat on a Saturday night you could do far worse."

  • "Just right to a Saturday lunch. Food was light, freshly prepared and presented with style."

  • "This was a Valentine's treat and it delivered. The food was interesting, with thought put it in and delivered on taste. I'm a bit of a demanding diner and I was searching for criticisms (perhaps the pastry on the venison wellington could have been crispier but the sauce and filling was so deliciously moist!). Drinks were elegant and well made. Impressively our waiter was able to stand up to the barrage of excited questions we had about the food - "what are the different cooking methods used for the trio of beetroot?". It was reassuringly busy so there was a time limit on our table but everything was moved for us to the bar area so that we could finish our cocktails and digest happily our feast. Would definitely go there again."

  • "I've probably been meaning to go here for about 10 years, and I finally made it. I think a long time ago it was somewhere that was reasonably priced, but popularity means it's got a lot more expensive since I first heard of it. Overall I wasn't disappointed, the food was excellent, particularly the fish which was cooked to perfection and very delicate. The wine list was a little bit disappointing, lots of overpriced young vintages that aren't drinking yet, and when I found a bottle of 2007 rioja that looked reasonable, the bottle that turned up was a 2009 after all. Such is life."

  • "We live in Düsseldorf and have had dinner at the Laughing Gravy five times since September. We keep going back because of the excellence of the food and the fact that it has maintained high standards for a very reasonable price. It would be very hard to find similar value anywhere."
