A word from The India Restaurant
For an atmospheric Indian meal only a stone’s throw from London’s Cannon Street station, The India restaurant delivers every time. This snug 'n' cosy restaurant is set entirely underground in a series of three dining rooms each decorated individually with whitewashed vaulted ceilings and comfy leather chairs, and the intimate setting is perfect for dinner parties and celebrations. Popular with City types, commuters and curry-lovers alike, The India has an extensive menu which features classic curries such as jalfrezies and balti masalas, and the restaurant's signature dish is the thali – a selection of traditional dishes presented in small bowls on a round tasting platter. The chef prides himself on creating classic renditions of the subcontinent’s most exclusive gastronomy – Vintage Indian cuisine. Unobtrusive, seamless service is the byword here. It’s no surprise that The India is busy at lunch and with an after-work crowd, and has a popular private dining room for events.Continued

  • "The India is consistent with decent food and service. Portion sizes have somewhat reduced but still satisfactory."

  • "I've visited The India several times and it never fails to deliver on the food - great flavours and plenty of it !"

  • "Having discovered this restaurant on Top Table, I have now eaten there twice in the past two weeks. The food is delicious, full of flavours rather than heat. The service was friendly and efficient. Our waiter remembered me on our second visit, which is the sign of good service. Forget Brick Lane and head for The India if you want an exceptionally good Indian meal."

  • "This place does some very good indian food, and at great prices if you go at lunch especially. I have been disappointed twice now with the experience where I have booked via toptable and been told when i changed my mind and ordered off the main menu instead of the tt offer, that they will cancel my booking therefore i get no points. not happy with this idea... as i still found the place and booked via tt and i am a paying customer! very strange, if they could sort this out i would have much better things to say about it im sure..."

  • "This is a wonderfully cosy restaurant in a great location. Service was lovely & attentive. Food was delicious. Would recommend - perhaps not for fancy occasions but for a casual dinner it was perfect."

  • "Have been here several times and never had a disappointing meal. It's always the place requested to go to when we have ex-pats visiting. Food is great and service very efficient whether you are a couple or group it make no difference. Onion bhajees divine, along with everything else on the menu!"

  • "We arrived at 7.15 pm to take our choice of the vacant tables amongst a sprinkling of early diners. The restaurant is spacious and nicely lit to create a pleasant ambience. A couple of parties arrived shortly after us and, for once in my experience of parties, they were not unpleasantly loud. For our starter we took the Tandoori platter for two which we thought lacking in flavour. For mains one of us had chicken and the other, lamb. Two lamb meals arrived. The mistake was quickly acknowledged and remedied. The portions were quite generous including the 'ladies fingers', rice, etc. We thought the 'pickle tray' could have been more interesting. We enjoyed the ice cream made with whole milk. We enjoyed Chang beer. Good value."

  • "I just love this atmospheric restaurant, with its candlelight and vaults. This was a return visit with friends and, as always, the service and food were excellent. My chicken biryani was really delicious and with the TT 50% offer this was excellent value. My friends were very impressed and I think they will go back. The only issue was the ladies loo, which could definitely do with a bit of a spruce up. Otherwise would definitely recommend."

  • "The waiters seemed a little rushed to get us to start eating which seemed weird as the restaurant was quite empty. But the overall service was good and atmosphere was excellent."

  • "I had always heard friends talk about toptable and thought I would give it a try myself! Booking was easy, the hard part is trying to decide what to eat. I had the lamb which was cooked to perfection. Can't complain at all about the service, food was quick and we were always attended to. When you never have to ask for water now that's service! Atmosphere is great with lit candles. Would definitely be going back :)"

  • "The food would have got an outstanding but for the amount of oil in my main and one of the popaddoms was stale. The service was good although I've had better on previous visits. The Ambience is good but thing that let it down was the music, the volume kept changing. It should be background music, at dinner I don't want to be shouting over the music, which in turn causes everyone else to raise their voices and I end up having to shout over them too. The quality of the food was good but I found the cost of drinks a little too high. Was going to get an apperitif but thought better of it when I saw the price at 5 pounds. I'd go back because the taste of the food was good and previous experience was better, so maybe this was just an off day."

  • "Second visit and a good curry especially with the offer. Always worth a visit."

  • "Good value with the Toptable offer. Standard Indian fare, reliably executed and substantial portions. Colleague's lamb shank looked the most impressive dish, but there was a general greasiness in many of the dishes. Service was efficient, and overall a good place for a group booking."

  • "Great service, great meal and also benefited from 50% off food! Would visit again"

  • "A little hard to find, and is predominantly downstairs, so don't expect any mobile reception. Food was good and menu was varied catering to all tastes. Service did seem a bit aggressive at one point when the waiter advised us not to order our starters until we had decided on mains, although I think there was some confusion and really he just wanted us to order out mains before it got too busy. We insisted on ordering them separately, and there was no delay at all."

  • "Visted on Friday 21st Feb 2014. Dinner for 2, TopTable 30% off food deal. Excellent food, really tasty. Had meat platter to start, South Indian garlic chicken, lamb madrass, garlic naan, cheese naan, pilau rice, large kingfisher, large chang. Came to around £65 inc service, after the 30% discount. Meat was very soft, naan was fantastic. Would recommend if in the area. It's underground, felt a little cramped where we sat."

  • "Food was 'ok', service seemed aggressive and almost ruined our evening."

  • "As ever the India provides great food and wine. But the staff need a refresher course - a dropped fork and having to remind them twice about the drinks order rather spoils the otherwise great ambience."

  • "A last minute decision to find an Indian in the City on a weekend. A nice little find. Good starters, decent mains - the chicken bhuna was very salty but the naan was superb. With 50% it was a very cheap meal for 2 - £30 with the 12.5 % service. Would come back if in the area but would make the trip especially."

  • "Very good Indian restaurant, friendly staff. Menu was a mix of traditional and modern cooked very well. The selection of prawn starters that we chose were very good."

  • "I think the food at The India is the best city Indian, and I have tried them all. The food is the most authentic tasting. They have lots of good vegetarian dishes and the chana masala, paneer dishes are very good. The platters to share are outstanding, the flavours are excellent. Great place for lunch and dinner, and i love the way the restaurant is underground."

  • "hidden away downstairs a lovely well lit delicious restaurant. the staff were helpful attentive and knowledgeable the was loads of choice on the menu each one sounding delicious, we opted for the 50% off 2 courses special offer. There were 4 of us and we tried the mixed platter starters with popadoms and chutneys and we each a different main course with rice and nan breads the food was gorgeous we were all pleased with our choice and more than satisfied with generous portions"

  • "This is a great little indian restaurant just off Cannon Street. It is underground in barrel vaulted rooms which adds to the atmosphere. They often have top table deals 50% or 30% off food. I have been there the last 2 New Years and the food has always been excellent. Definitely a cut above a standard curry house. Chicken tikka masala was particularly good. Food is very fresh and tasty and not as heavy or oily as some places, making it a good lunchtime option. Tip - Naan breads on the small side so you wont want to share one! Service was friendly too. Highly recommended and great value with either of the top table deals."

  • "We have come here as a very large group many times and love it. We are always kept at the back so we know we aren't disturbing others with our noise, food choice is great and always tasty. We used the top table offer this time of 50% off food so it was even better!"
    dined on 10/12/2013
  • "Another great meal only spoiled by being sat in their "corridor" (those who have been before will know what I mean), right by the door and the toilets! I spoecifically asked to be seated somewhere else in the "main" room in my reservation so this was a disappointment! Food however was excellent as ever - and I will be back!"

  • "Went on a Friday night with a friend and was running late, rang up and they had no issue accommodating us. Lovely food, excellent service. Would definitely recommend!"

  • "Good value Indian in the heart of the city. We had chicken bhuna and saag lamb and both very good. The mango lassi is delicious! Service can be hit and miss but they mean well."

  • "Found that the bill was a bit of a surprise at the end of our meal as none of us had any alcohol. Food was good but I think over priced"
    dined on 11/12/2013
  • "This was a return visit to The India and was every bit as good as before. The main attraction of this restaurant is the setting which is in vaults below the ground, lit by candlelight. The service is attentive without being intrusive. The food is pretty good too and especially good value with the TT 50% offer. Would definitely recommend."
    dined on 07/12/2013
  • "Great venue, the ambience is one of it's plus points given the underground low ceiling rooms. The food was great, what you would expect from a good curry. Highly recommend."

  • "It was a shame that we couldn't use any deals as it wasDecember but all was good as usual."
    dined on 04/12/2013
  • "The place was beautiful, set underground which was unique. The food was very tasty but wouldn't pay full price for it...went on the offer of 50% on food as long you ordered starter and main. Very nice place Mention it was a birthday celebration but the waiter didn't bother to find out who was the celebrant nor made and effort as some restaurants would bring out a candle on a dessert ordered."
    dined on 16/11/2013
  • "Small portions, average food and overpriced beverages. For example, I asked for a bottle if water and was served a 750ml bottle of water for 4.90 ...in a restaurant where main dishes are priced 9-11 pounds, it's ridiculous to serve water priced like that! Dessert list was a complete joke! All they have are ice creams...not a single dessert. Very disappointing for an induan restaurant."
    dined on 25/11/2013
  • "Busy as usual, the service was friendly and swift. A Bit disappointed about the starters which we remembered to be better; the Mains were less spicy than usual but tasty. Good value with the 25% off offer."
    dined on 22/11/2013
  • "The dinning experience was good, my friends and i had a fantastic time until the waiter got confused about the bill as it was part paid by card and part paid in cash. Its worth getting this right as it ended up tarnishing the experience we had. Up until that point, I thought they were pretty good. My rating has obviously taken that experience into consideration."
