The Hinds Head - Bray Ratings and Reviews
A great outing!
Flawless ambience, food and service! Wonderful afternoon out. The village is also worth visiting .
Overpriced for the quality of the roast.
Having been to the HH before for dinner (which was excellent), the Sunday lunch experience was a real disappointment . Everything course and side dish over seasoned with too much salt and roast potatoes that were more deep fried than roasted. The saving grace was the service which was excellent. I'd think twice about going again.
Great food at reasonable price considering quality
Booked as a xmas treat, this gastro pub lived up to expectations. Very good food in a homely atmosphere. A nice mix of foodies and locals who are very lucky to have this as their local. Dress smart casual....not over the top posh. Staff informative without being overbearing.

It's a cracking pub - it's a cracking menu - but it IS a pub - the cost is a little removed from reality - don't get me wrong it's great and I've always had a great experience dining there but....it IS the wrong price
Blah at Bray
The food was muddled in its flavours, and disappointing given its hype. Blumenthal is resting on his laurels. The duck and steak were tender, but the betroot and lentils overseasoned and tasting of neither betroot nor lentils. The puddings were the most disappointing, a strange trifle, and meagre plum dessert. The service on the other hand was attentive, and the ambience good. At roughly £60 pounds a head for 2 courses and a bottle of wine, its was cheekily priced.
Very good lunch on a very cold day. Not rushed and a most delightful Polish waitress, very knowledgable on the menu
Bob Geldolf needs to try the Hinds Head on Monday
Historically, finding good food and atmosphere on a Monday can be challenging. This year for my wife's birthday, we went to the Hinds Head for a bite. It was a mixed informal crowd of business people and foodie types, but busy enough to create a nice hum. We started at the bar - Gin Martini (shaken and stirred with an olive). We were seated and served by attentive but not over-bearing staff - The food was top notch - Excellent steak with an Argentinian Red, what more does a man (or woman) need on a Monday. I love Mondays.
Great gastro pub
Super meal at the Hind's Head. Very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Food is really tasty - simple but delicious. Nicely presented and friendly service. Fantastic choice of beers and ales too and wine list reasonably priced. Recommend the steaks and the ox tail and kidney pudding!
Meets every expectation
Reputations are fragile but the Hinds Head fulfills theirs. Great food and service. Overall ambience very convivial for a friendly fun evening Give it a try. Great value too
I'm so happy that I booked this place 10/10
Booked this place for me and my wife's wedding anniversary. I'm so happy that I did, because the whole experience was superb. From the building to the staff and food, the level of service and detail was perfection. I can safely say, that whatever you order you will not be dissapointed. I will absolutely be coming here again! 10/10 *****
Fab sunday lunch
I took my husband for a late sunday lunch here for his birthday. The food was splendid and so was the service. The only down side was that they seated a family with 2 young children right next to us [when there were other tables free] and it was very clear that the children would rather be elsewhere & fought most of the time!! Very annoying when you are trying to have a lovely quiet time enjoying your scrummy lunch.
We always enjoy the Hindshead as the food generally is exceptionally good. However, we have found recently that many of the dishes are over seasoned especially the oxtail and kidney pudding and the spinach side dish. The ambiance is good but the noise in the main dining room makes conversation difficult especially for the hard of hearing. This spoiled the last time we dined as it was difficult to understand what the waiters and waitresses were saying never mind the people at our table. The triple cooked chips make up for the negative points. Service was, as always, was spot on.
Went to Hinds Head on a Sunday with the family, had an amazing meal! Service was good, attentive but not over the top. The place was busy when we're there, so it is quite noisy, but it's ok. There is a really cozy table by the fireplace - ask for this when you book! We had pea and ham soups, scotch eggs, fillet steak, pork roasts, beef roast, quaking puddings and chocolate tart (with milk ice cream) - all of them are very good! Bear in mind that the scotch egg contains quail egg, so they're tiny! Not the usual pub scotch eggs. Good selection of alcohol and cocktails - I had the sweet and pink drink (can't remember the name now) and it contains cotton candy, marshmallow foam and skittles washed vodka. I love it!
Headline Flavours at Hinds Head
Had a Saturday evening meal with friends and were blown away by both the service and the flavours. This started with the selection of gin and tonics and continued throughout all courses. Very attentive service and explanations - coupled with a variety of flavour combinations that highlighted Heston's influence! Of particular note in our group of four were: scallops, pea&ham soup, the plaice and veal sirloin. Also the "Wassailing" pudding...mmmm ..and I am not normally a pudding person! Thanks to everyone for a memorable evening.

Good food in a pub environment quite expensive for pub grub as it has the 'Heston' tag
Lunch at the Hinds Head - an excellent experience, top notch staff and the best food around !
Food was fantastic but seriously let down by the service. The vegetarian option need's re thinking. One vegi option for starter & main both goats cheese ?. Had hoped to have a drink at the bar before lunch as thy had a decent selection of beers but greeter insisted we went straight to our table despite the fact we were early, where we were left for 15 minutes with a glass of water and a menu before anyone came back to the table to inquire if we wanted drinks. Wine list only came after food order had been taken. Staff all very nice but service was frustratingly slow though out. Had to ask three times for coats. Enough said. What a shame.
Food was good, and not too fussy. Disappointing that no hot green veg offered just carrots and red cabbage in October when there are lots of greens available. Staff very pleasant but not at the level of a top London restaurant for service: leaning across, order in which we were served etc but I guess they all have to learn, though one wonders why they haven't been told this. Upstairs this time, which whilst preferable to downstairs to the left of the bar where you are too close to have anything approaching a private conversation, there was no real 'atmosphere' - a little too bright and cafeteriaish for a Saturday night. Overall an enjoyable evening in good company but quite expensive at almost £55/ head as none of us had a dessert and only one glass of wine, one beer, 4 soft drinks and bottled water. Have been 3 times over the last 6 months, and taking all these into consideration the overall rating is 4 stars, for me personally it works best for lunch,

It was too formal, the food was great but far too sophisticated for a pub.
Best pea soup I've ever had; same with the bone-in veal chop. Highly recommended!!
don't go there poor food, atmosphere, high cost
I booked Sunday roast lunch for my wife, son, daughter from Australia and myself. With the reputation of fat duck and Heston blomintal I felt how good can a traditional Sunday roast be. Well the location was and at mosphere was of a third rate pub sticky bar and tables and when we came to order, we were told that the very meal we wanted was finished roast beef.If I was alone I would have walked out then but didn't want to create a problem for my family.I ordered pork loin that's all there was a what arrived was there thin slices of pork with hard reheated roast potatoes and fat sodden triple chips. I would not recommend a homeless dossier to eat there. I told the staff that they have lost a customer, and potential business I was also looking for a Xmass diner location for my company of 28 people.
Great experience again
A treat for three friends that looked after me when I broke my ankle earlier this year. Service was spectacular, right mix of friendly and non intrusion. The food shone and there were no complaints, only ohs and ahs! Cost reflects the star and the name but for foodies lunch at the Hinds Head is well worth the price. My only criticism would be the table was a bit low.
Best dish of the year
My chef son proclaimed the oxtail and kidney pie the best dish he had eaten all year! The food was all delicious, the service warm and the atmosphere friendly. However, a greater choice of vegetarian dishes is highly recommended - there were only two and we don't all like goats cheese - and the starter and main course both featured them. Unless this is changed we wont be able to bring half our family to dine here.
Pub lunch but not as you know it!
A great place for a leisurely lunch with delicious food and a lovely wine selection. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful but also unobtrusive and the portions sizes are perfect for having 3 courses. I'm not sure where the time went!
I should come here more often
I had a delicious lunch with a customer. He also enjoyed immensely. I had a Chicken Pie. Sounds boring? It was not. it was the best I've ever had (and I like a pie). I know The Hinds Head is a great restaurant with it's traditional English menu (sometimes with a twist). I really must come here more often as I've just had a big reminder on what I've been missing. Highly recommended!!!
Great quality food in a relaxed environment
We have visited several times and love the Green pea and ham soup for starters. I usually take the fish as main course - always cooked to perfection and the rest of the family like the steaks. We like the causal non stuffy environment of a great eatery. Food is always excellent. The only disappointment was that the wonderful Triple fried chips were not on the menu this weekend as the quality of potato was not good enough. It does show the exacting standards required however I will call ahead next time to check. The desserts are more delicious than they sound - indeed the menu looks quite ordinary but Heston has a twist to every dish. We have always been delighted with food and service One of our favourite restaurants next to Heston's Dinner!
Very decent but I can't say exceptional
I put this down as a gastro-pub. There are many, though not many as well-known as this one, which is because of it's Heston link, Fat Duck, etc. It's a good gastro-pub, but I've eaten as well or better in quite a few. The location is wonderful and the pub itself is charming. I was slightly dismayed that the place way half empty on a Friday night - warning signs... The food, though, was very decent, but not especially noteworthy, especially for the price. Our group found the menu slightly disappointing and limiting and, for a very rare occasion, I found myself ordering a steak, largely because none of the other choices struck me as quite right. The steak was decent, well-cooked, but a little on the thin side to make a truly good steak. Overall, very pleasant, but nothing I would hurry back for. One noteworthy high point was the service - excellent. French staff - incredibly friendly and engaging. Loved it.
Simply excellent fare...
Have visited a couple of times before, and it is always a solid experience. Well kept ales, great Scotch egg, pies & puddings galore all with a slight and usually successful twist. Approached as a regular pub rather than a particularly special occasion destination, it works very well.
In a restaurant of this standard it was disappointing that they had run out of the main course I selected and both of my preferred desserts. A waitress knocked over a bottle of water on our table, spilling some but made no offer of replacement. I'd think twice about Sunday lunch there again.
Had another fantastic experience. The food was outstanding and the service was great. Always with a smile. Highly recommend this to everyone!
Ok if she is not paying ;-)
Lovely meal. Perfect ambience for an Autumnal evening. Fancy starters may not appeal to all, but the Rib eye made up for this - delicious. Desserts were amaze balls, just wish they were slightly bigger!
Lovely meal and extremely friendlystaff
We would like to thank the staff for making the evening memorable. Lovely meal especially the Quaking pudding - a must for all who visit. We have found Heston's recipe and will be giving it a go. Thank you to all the staff on 26 sept.
Good efficient lunch service
Having been in an evening it was good to see a slick efficient lunch service which allowed us to get on with some business whilst enjoying good food in the usual warm ambience of the Hinds Head
Fantastic best Sunday Lunches we have had.
Was fantastic really happy with the food. I had a gastric bypass a few months ago and cannot eat much and no body questioned me just ordering a couple of starters. The gravy was the best I have ever had. Not really big portions for the rest of the family would have expected a little more for the money. Meat was cooked to perfection. Will be returning.
Didn't live up to expectations
First visit here and was super excited. The waitresses that greeted us and took to our table were really friendly. The waiters thereafter were not as good. Slow to bring drinks to table and had to be reminded about a glass of wine. Not what I expected. Had the roast pork Sunday lunch which was nice but the potatoes were overdone - super crispy and lacking any fluffiness inside. The pork was lovely - food was good quality. Vegetables were perfectly cooked but temperature of these wasn't hot enough. The crackling was airy and crispy. After main I tried the chocolate tart with milk ice cream. This was delicious but a tad overpriced. The bill was served with chocolate ganache which was far too rich/dark for me. Overall I felt the service let this place down.
...evening ruined thanks to selfish folk being children to a restaurant late evening
OK but not outstanding
We came for lunch. The service was first rate but my ox tail and kidney pudding was over salt and the dressing on my companions salad was had far too much lemon juice in it. Overall the meal was good but that was all. It was not outstanding and we've had equally good meals at other places for considerably less than this cost.
Oxtail & Kidney Pudding Salty
Portions extremely small especially the starters. For main course I had the Oxtail & Kidney Pudding/Pie. Was unable to finish due to extreme salt content. Must have had a months allowance in one dish. Picked out the bits of tasty Kidney. The cheesecake was acceptable. Staff had good knowledge of menu and were attentive. This is my second and last visit to the Hinds Head.
Nice traditional British food
I really enjoyed my visit to the Hind's head. The restaurant is set in a very quaint little pub and we were made to feel welcome straight away. We ordered the Venison Carpaccio, tea-smoked salmon and the scotch egg. All we're delicious and highly recommendable. For our mains we both order the oxtail and kidney pudding. It was delicious but a little bit rich. Our desserts were delicious too. The service was excellent and I'd certainly go back again.
Lived up to expectation
Fantastic food, staff friendly and attentive, cant wait to go back.
