The Grill Room at the Square Ratings and Reviews
Due to travel problems we were very late for our booking; however staff welcomed the guest who had arrived on time and also welcomed us warmly when we finally arrived. My cousin who is a very particular diner, cleared his Sunday roast plate and devoured more than his share of veg - a compliment to any chef I assure you!!!!! Another lovely lunch in pleasant surroundings at 29.
Great Steaks and Fabulous Chips
My wife and I had a late Sturday lunch at The Grill Room and we could not fault it. Restaurant is beautifully decorated and most definitely "up market" without being stuffy or pretentious. The staff are polite and attentive although our waiter didn't bother telling us abot the "specials". The fresh homemade bread is excellent and my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our steaks whch were both cooked pretty much how we requested (medium fillet for her and medium-rare off the bone ribeye for me). The thick, hand cut chips were absolutely fabulous (stars of the show) and the crispy onion rings were also excellent. Some good wines by the glass if you do not need a full bottle. With nothing coming with the steaks the bill soon mounts up when you add a couple of side dishes but The Grill Room is not a "cheap eats" sort of place so while the final bill for lunch was quite high, I did feel that it represented reasonable value when considering the location, decor, staff and the food and drink. This was our second visit and we would certainly visit again.
Great setting.. But too pricey!!
The young waiter was exceptional, he was still as school but was a delight and a credit to your restaurant!! The ambience and the setting is beautiful but a little too expensive for just dinner, steaks were beautifully cooked but all the extras you had to pay extra for on the bill! Can be pricey especially when you have a nice bottle of wine

It is in my opinion that the standard and quality of the food was not what it had been on our first visit
The Grill Room was recommended to me by a friend when I was looking for somewhere special to book to celebrate my birthday with family. I was not disappointed everything was lovely from the minute you step through the door. Food, service , atmosphere beautiful decor and value for your money. I will definitely be back and will recommend to friends.
Not so good...
I think it's a fancy place, but the food is not so outstanding as I could imagine, no bad but not one of the best foods I can remember, the place is very nice for a romantic dinner but the food is just good, nothing extraordinary.
Third visit - not as good as previosu two!
Having been to the Grill Room on two previous occasions where both food and service were excellent, I was a little disappointed with the service on this occasion. Instead of having just one waiter attending to our table, there were many and it meant that there were gaps in service. Our mains came out less the side orders which came a few minutes later which may not sound like a huge issue but it did spoil the dining experience slightly. We also ordered liqueurs which took a long time too come - it just so happened that they sat waiting to be delivered to the table for a fair amount of time and as a result the coffee was cold. I always feel that when attending a restaurant of this caliber (the meal was £200 for four people) that all the small touches should be exceptionally good, especially when it comes to service and attention paid to customers. The staff were all very pleasant but perhaps they were understaffed on this occasion? The food was excellent as always and the ambience is very nice in the Grill Room so that gets a 4.5 out of 5 for me.
Social / Business Dinner
Meal was arranged for a American couple who were visiting us as they passed through on the road to the Middle East. We arrived around 10 minutes early and were asked to take a set upstairs at the bar. On arriving at the bar we had to eventually request the service of a bartender and then explain the types of cocktails required by the American's, not the best start. Drinks were OK when served. The table service was in general good, food was very good and well presented, time span between courses was acceptable and not to long. Wine value and quality was very good , this was recommended by serving waiter. Trying to get the bill was trying, three attempts to attract and get waiters attention. Overall pleased and would recommend The Grill Room to friends especially over a dinner out in another city center establishment costing much more.
Very disappointed with meal after high expectations. Starters were pate and haggis tart. Pate no better than generic shop bought , pastry and haggis very dry . Staff were fantastic and made the experience slightly better .
Very disapointing, style over substance.
The service was good but the food was unmemorable. It was not of particularly good quality and just a bit ordinary but expensive. We eat out a lot and I don't mind spending a lot if I enjoy a meal but this was disappointing. I ordered the pear tart and it was so soggy and tasteless I left it which is not like me. There was really loud jazz music in the background and I didn't feel relaxed. There are a lot of good reviews on here and I don't understand why. There are much better restaurants in Glasgow.
Great waitress but...
Reception and waiting staff very helpful and welcoming. However the wine ordered was not what was brought to table. And our next choice also wasn't as described on menu. We dingied the wine menu thereafter. Food was ok but we arrived straight from a long train journey and booked the two meals offer for something quick and tasty. As in try this out and may be good for a Saturday night special meal. But the offer isn't really for two meals as such - you have to pay for vegetables or potatoes as 'extras'. Finally, we were overcharged. No qualms with our great waitress who sorted it out straight away. Suspect that these offers are really a means for up selling, and that we are not valued customers. Not likely to return for a celebratory occasion, nor to recommend to anyone else.
Fantastic food ruined by awful service
Went to Grill Room at the Square with 3 friends. All 4 of us ordered medium rare fillet steak. One was cooked to perfection. The other three were clearly overcooked bordering on well done territory. We informed the waitress who was very helpful and said she would get it sorted ASAP. She took the three plates away to get new steaks for us. About 5-6 minutes later, a woman (the manager I presume) came over and informed our table that the chef was not happy with us and that he felt the steaks were cooked perfectly. I pointed out the one properly cooked steak and told the manager that the other 3 steaks were cooked significantly more than that steak. She said that if there had been a mistake, it was that the good steak was actually undercooked and the other 3 steaks were fine. We pointed out the menus description of medium-rare did not come anywhere close to how our steaks had been cooked. At this point I was pretty gobsmacked. I'm not exactly sure what the manager wanted us to do. Accept the steaks we sent back and had been sitting out for about 10 minutes at this point? We received three new steaks which were cooked perfectly. The rest of the meal was lovely, the restaurant is beautiful and our waitress was great. (She wasn't to blame for the awful service from the manager) It's a pity the entire meal was ruined by the manager's attitude towards us. The steaks were sent back because they were clearly overcooked and we were treated as if we were the problem. Pretty disappointing when the bill was in the region of £300 for 4 people. Can't say I'll ever be back. There's plenty of great restaurants in Glasgow with infinitely better service.
Fab Sunday dinner
Fabulous meal had on the 2 for 29 offer. Could not fault anything. Had the smoked haddock main meal and it was delish. Atmosphere lovely in this venue, jazz singer on in the background and good buzz in the restaurant. Would recommend. New waitress working who was lovely and informative about the food.
Efficient service with out feeling rushed, food excellent especially steak and the irn bru trifle. Took my some and daughter for the first to. Lee rate my daughters 30th and she lives in Birmingham she thoroughly enjoyed the whole dining experience. Will definitely be back
Hmmm, yes... I think!
Guy playing piano was awesome. Company was great as was food. I asked the waitress for BBQ sauce, to be informed that "there was absolutely none in the building anywhere". She made me feel very small and it compromised her tip due to the embarrassment in front of my lovely date. I'll be back but will ask to be served by someone other than that character.
Good food but far too noisy
This is the second time that we have been here. The first time was a great experience but this second visit definitely not the same. The food was excellent, as was the service, but the noise from the adjacent bar area dominated the whole place and made conversation and enjoyment of the lovely restaurant difficult. Therefore we will not be back or recommend it to friends looking for a quiet but good meal.
lunch at the grill
Have been to the grill room many times. I always enjoy the first class service I receive from the waitors when dining there. I had broccoli soup for starters on my last visit which is the most delicious soup I have ever eaten. I usually enjoy the steaks and have always found them to be the best in Glasgow but on my last visit I was a bit dissatisfied with my steak. I had a 10oz sirloin which I asked for med/rare. I felt it was over cooked slightly and was a bit crispy. I didn't enjoy this and felt it ruined my meal.
A very enjoyable evening.
Staff very welcoming, service was good and efficient. Staff were attentive but not overpowering. Food was tasty and well presented and also very good value for money. There was a good ambience in the restaurant and perfect lighting. All in all a very pleasant evening.
We have used the 2-4-29 many times great value
Always feel the standard of food and sevice is excellent. Never been let down atmosphere is so nice Highly recommend this restaurant
Great service, great food
Enjoyed our lunch the staff were really nice and very attentive. Would recommend it.
Great service and selection of food
Great service and selection of food
Service was patchy. A lot of staff floating about doing nothing at all. Couldn't hear information on specials for the unnecessary music an level of talking, as diners tried to communicate over it. We were offered water and, having seen others with jugs of iced water, said yes, only to discover later that we were charged £4.50 for it, which I consider to be outrageous. Then the bill was incorrect. When my husband challenged the waiter over it, he was informed that they "thought" we'd both had starters. They thought nothing of the kind. The information regarding our choices was keyed into the system and systems do not have the capacity to think. They only "know" what has been put into them. My husband's meal was adequate. Having paid a £10 supplement for steak, he then had to pay for a side of skinny fries, which were anything but. So 2 for £29 is a bit of a con. How can a piece of meat, one mushroom and one tomato be considered a meal. We've had much better elsewhere for less. We briefly visited your roof terrace also, naively thinking we might bring our Canadian visitors to capture the vista. That's certainly not going to happen, as there isn't one. We won't be back and we won't recommend it. Lexus have done themselves no favours by affiliating themselves with you.

Lovely al fresco dining within the city
We chose to dine at 29 yesterday on the 2 for £29 offer which includes a starter and main course each with a bottle of wine, really good value. We sat out on the terrace as the weather was great. Our first waiter Jeff was very attentive and so helpful. He even went and bought us suncream and we were conscious of burning as the weather was so hot. As we were celebrating we ordered a bottle of prosecco for which he agreed to subsidise from the wine deal which was very accommodating. The food was delicious and very well presented. We all had some cocktails which were also delicious. After what was a lovely afternoon it was unfortunately slightly spoiled when the bill arrived. After checking over the bill we realized we had not only been charged full price of £30.95 for the bottle of prosecco but also charged full price for our bottle of rose which was suppose to be part of deal. We called another young man over to point this out and he basically tried to tell us we were wrong and there was no mistake. He didn't speak very good english so his approach was quite abrupt. After explaining to him why we had been overcharged he said he would take the bill away and rectify the mistakes. A further 5 minutes later another waiter returns with the same bill to try and argue his point again, by this time I was very annoyed and asked to speak to the manager who never actually bothered to come over to the table and the same waiter for the third time had to fix the mistakes. Very disappointing for this type of establishment as the matter could have been sorted within five minuted. Instead, we waited 25 minutes and missed our train home in the process. Very poor management and customer service, which is probably why the venue was completely empty.
Good but noisy.
Good food and good service. Side portions large and would suit two people rather than one. Noisy atmosphere. Not suitable for quiet romantic meal in my opinion.
I went to 29 with friends and we all had a great time. The food was excellent, the ambience and service were all excellent. Overall an enjoyable experience.
We have been there at least 10 times and food has always been good. This time my starter of a chicken dish tasted like tinned tuna?. My ain course of Veal Cordin Bleu was so overxooked that the cheese was non existant as it had obviouslt dried up. The meat was tough as it had been over cooked. My friend had a steak which she said was lovely but had to pay an extra £3.50 for chips? Surley chips should come as part of the meal with a steak.
We were very impressed by the high standard of food (steak was one of the best my husband had tasted)and service we received at the grill room and the overall atmosphere was amazing.
The food was good - relatively plain but very well cooked and presented. As a party of four we had Sunday lunch in a nice, relaxed atmosphere and were not under any pressure to vacate the table even although we were there for more than the allocated two hours. The service was attentive but unobtrusive.
Two for £29
Having visited a few times now to 29 private members club, I decided to try the offer 2 for £29. However the fourth person cancelled leaving three. I was astounded when the third person was treated no different and NOT asked to pay fill price for meal, instead given half a bottle of wine with their meal. I thought this was just an amazing touch as I fully expected the odd number to pay full menu price. I was very impressed with this. The food choice was fantastic and the food was delicious as it always is in grill on the corner. I most definately will be back. Just wish there was one closer to home for me!
Took my mum for special lunch and once again, from entering the restaurant until leaving were made to feel special and well looked after by our waitress. Great choices available and food was exceptional. Unfortunately we had no room left for dessert and had to pass on such lovely sounding sweets available. So, once again many thanks, my mum really enjoyed her first visit.
Location Location Location
This is the centre of Glasgow and if you are new to town you wont find a better location. We had the 2 for £29 deal and it was a great deal
Another delightful meal
Good choice on special menu. Nicely prepared seasonal food, well done
Excellent food and service as always. I have dined here with friends on several occasions and will be back for many more visits.

Variety would be better , also they never had any of the chocolate orange truffle cake which was very disappointing
Love this place been there many times.
This is a great place to eat and also just go for a drink. Food is always good and excellent value and service. One of my favourite resteraunts in Glasgow.
I hadn't been in this restaurant for over a year and since the last time I was there, everything seems to have changed . The food is ok, but not worth going back for, the decor is very tired and even the sofas could be doing with a good clean. This used to be a place that had a lot of business men/women in for lunch, now it's a place for elderly ladies 'who lunch'
Great Service and Fresh food
It was good value with having wine included. There could have been a little extra like roll and I would have bought dessert but preferred ice cream to clottedcream and was going to be charged extra which would have cost £8 which is a bit ott for afternoon. The seamill hydro do a coffee and beautiful dessert cake for less than £5. The food was delicious and service was attentive but spoiled by not changing clotted cream for ice cream and adding £1
Thoroughly enjoyable lunch
Booked here for lunch and a gossip. Couldn't have went anywhere better. Great food, great service and brilliant value for money @ £29 for 2 courses and a bottle of wine. Had the Ceasar salad and chicken both were good size portions and delicious. My friend thoroughly enjoyed their meal as well. Everything was served by friendly and attentive staff. Also enjoyed a delicious cocktail. I would recommend for lunch.
