About The Great House
This 16th century inn set in the heart of the Kentish weald just oozes character and history, with its wealth of exposed beams and a magnificent orangery overlooking the private garden. A traditional lynch gate and a herb garden just add to its charm. The mediterranean-style stone terrace is the ideal place to enjoy summer evenings. Our menu is made up of traditional English cuisine, regional French brasserie-style cuisine created by our chef as well as local seasonal game. You can also choose from a fine selection of ales and wine.

The Great House Ratings and Reviews
Consistently very good in all depts
Visited on several occasions and every time the overall experience was reliably very good. Nice not to have anything negative to report!! Excellent attention to detail - a very worthy place to spend your hard earned cash!
Great House, great food, great service!
The Great House came highly recommended by friends and did not disappoint. We were greeted by a friendly member of staff who showed us to our table straight away and although two of our party were late arriving, we didn't feel hurried or that this was a problem. Everyone very happy with menu choices; turbot, lamb, wild boar burger, mussels and the country bean and vegetable casserole for the vegetarian among us. We were celebrating two birthdays and their desserts arrived complete with candles which was a lovely touch. The restaurant was busy and clearly everyone was enjoying their evening which also contributed to the general ambiance. Superb attention to detail all round. Attentive, friendly staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. Excellent!
Nice place, food over salted
We enjoyed our meal at The Great House. Great surroundings and very friendly people. Service was, on the whole quite good, but somethings, like a round of drinks were slow. Parking a bit of a nightmare if you go for a later sitting. - But that's not really their fault. Food quite tasty but far too salty. Very over seasoned. Far too salty for our taste. We would however go back again.
The Great House lives up to its name lovely food.
We were recommended to go to the Great House by my daughter and so we arrange to meet some friends there as it was half distance for each of us. We felt the atmosphere was very friendly has a good selection of beers and drinks available, nice comfy seating in the bar area, where some people were choosing to eat, there were several small areas for dining away from the bar which were all fully booked on a Saturday in October, Good food, well cooked, good choice for most tastes, special children's portions looked as though they were available. You were not rushed to move from your table, although as they stopped taking bookings from 9.00 by 10.15 there were only 2 tables remaining, and we did feel that we were perhaps stopping them from closing up. Having said that we would definitely go there again as the food was good, clean, tidy, pleasant staff, parking and easy to find, just off the main road.
Took friends to Great House for lunch and as always very pleased with all the food we ordered. Partridge, wild boar hamburgers, fish and chips. Service great and lovely atmosphere. Not too noisy as we had plenty to catch up on and were able to do so with ease.
Better than ever!
Visited The Great House with one other couple on a Saturday night. From the minute we walked in we felt welcome. My husband ordered drinks at the bar and he was told they would be brought to us - this is extremely unusual in my experience but sure enough, a couple of mins. later a very friendly and helpful member of staff brought our drinks and offered us the menu to peruse. When we went through to the dining area it was immediately apparent that the place had undergone a sympathetic and very tasteful refurbishment with the addition of bi-folding doors onto a further dining terrace which didn't previously exist which I should imagine would be lovely in the warmer weather. They have also built some new ladies toilets! Turning to the food, we couldn't fault it (we all had the venison) and the size of the cheeseboards had to be seen to be believed!! The waiting staff were cheerful, attentive and polite throughout. We will not hesitate to return.
Invited son and girl friend for Sunday Lunch at the Great House. We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere in pleasant surroundings and loved the food. Shared fish platter got the thumbs up and the roast, both lamb and beef, were very tasty. The friendly and efficient service contributed to an all round positive experience. Will definitely go there again (hopefully) soon.
Had a meal with some friends. The online menu had a chicken dish, that wasn't on the actual menu. Mentioned this to the waiter and he arranged for a substitute chicken meal to be cooked. This was very impressive.

Fantastic place. Lovely well styled pub in the countryside. The menu is scrumptious. They have a great team from Chef to front of house. Really good for family's. Sunday roast are 5 Star.
Wonderful, ambient, fantastic - great place!!
First visit and really pleasantly surprised - it must be good if celebs stop by (we had a lovely chat with Raj from Four Rooms who was there with his family) can't fault the place and I cannot wait to go back! Food faultless and great attentive service with a stylish seasonal menu that's not too over complicated. Just perfect!
Very Pleasent Pub
We have eaten twice at the Great House, and thoroughly enjoyed both visits, we are planning on going again with a small crowd for a pre-christmas meal, looking forward to it.

Another lovely meal at The Great House. We arrived early and enjoyed a glass of prosecco in the side bar while waiting for my 2-year old granddaughter to wake up! As usual, the staff made a great fuss of her, and she enjoyed the free activity pack and sampling her parents' meals. The fish sharing board was excellent, followed by beautifully cooked lamb rump. A very enjoyable birthday celebration for my wife.

Friends Birthday Dinner
The food was superb and could not be faulted. The service was just right, not intrusive, but there when you wanted it. It was good value for money and worked out at about £30 each and we were not being stingy with drinks or courses. Equally as pleasant as a local pub with a lovely atmosphere. The facilities were immaculate as was the restaurant and staff. A comprehensive menu with something for all tastes and plenty of Vegetarian options. You will not be disappointed by an evening at the Great House
This was our first visit and we enjoyed a really good lunch with friends, so there were four of us in all. The service was relaxed and welcoming. The menu choices were good and included a range of specials. We all shared the fish platter for a starter, which was delicious. All our main courses were excellent, and just the right size. One person had opted for the 2 course menu, which included a dessert. As we were all quite full by this time we decided to share it, and the waitress was very happy to provide us all with spoons so we could all tuck in. We chose a trio of ice creams/sorbets from the interesting and unusual selection. All three were delicious and beautifully served. We are all fit pensioners, but it was obvious that the layout was not suitable for anyone with a disability or difficulty with walking, as there are several sets of steps to manoeuvre. Another customer had real difficulties getting in, and there didn't seem to be an alternative route. But we will definitely go back.
The Great House
The Great House is consistently very good. The staff are friendly and efficient and the food excellent. There is an extensive wine list and the beer is good. One of the best gastro pubs that I have been to
Lovely Sunday lunch with friends at the ...
Lovely Sunday lunch with friends at the Great House. Three of us shared a delicious fish board, the fourth tried the lamb spring rolls - a new addition to the menu, and apparently very good. For main courses, there was a 50:50 split between traditional Sunday roasts and the magret of duck - both very good. Service, as always, friendly and attentive.
Fun Evening with a Live Band
A great place to have dinner with friends. On the evening we had dinner, there was a live band playing in the garden on a lovely sunny day which was great and added enormously to the ambience. The band were great!! The service is very good in the restaurant and the staff were keen to help. The food was good, tasty and my steak was tender and cooked to taste. Good wine list to complement the meal, however, the Chapel Down wine was overpriced, so we chose an alternative good wine. Overall a good meal and a good experience to be recommended!
A celebratory meal for four and we were all praising the food. The selection from the menu was amazing with such a wide range to appeal. The specials board came up trumps with squid in light batter. No chewy white rings, just beautifully prepared and cooked slivers instead. The fish pie was a Pandora's box of fish varieties with giant prawns. The pork tenderloin was superb and the scallops to die for. We have eaten here quite often and this was one if iur best meals yet. Thank you.
GREAT HOUSE - GREAT EXPERIENCE
Lovely grub, smashing pub and attentive, friend;y staff. Two courses plus drinks at around £20 per head represents very good value. Will be going again soon.
Consistently excellent !
The Great House is fast becoming our favourite place to have Sunday Lunch. The food is always of a high standard, service friendly and efficient and also a great ambience all for a reasonable price- enough said!
This is the second time we have used opentable and both times we looking for a last minute booking. Really easy to use and so far seems to be a reliable system. I have now downloaded the App and will use in future as fast and simple to use . The Great House in Cranbrook recommended for ambience good food and service.
A meeting with family and friends, was made perfect. Lovely pre lunch drinks, really good service, lovely atmosphere. We were not rushed, a perfect place for a lovely get together.

Well cooked and presented food. Attentive without overbearing staff. A good find in the High Weald of Kent.
Lunch at the great house
I came with my friend for lunch at the Great House on Friday, having got lost, and arriving late, we were still greated very well. The restraunt itself was very different , but in a good way. We were offered a drink straight away, and given the menu, along with the days specials board. Service was very very good, the food was excellent, and hot! Which in like . The waitresses were very attentive, and my friend and I had a thoroughly delightful lunch. WE would both recommend it to our friends and family, and I will definitely be back as soon as I can. Excellent service and food
A very enjoyable Sunday lunch with family due to excellent attentive service (without it being intrusive). The waitresses kept our table informed of any anticipated delayed in our order for example when ordering the chocolate fondant (10 mins - but it was worth the wait). Good choice available on the menu including several specials. The T-Bone steak was enjoyed by three of our party.

Yet another extremely good meal at the Great House, this time with a couple of friends to celebrate a birthday. Both couples shared one of the sharing boards - our fish board was superb, and enormous - I would have been happy to just have a dessert afterwards! We then had whole baked sea bass, same again - delicious and enormous! Service, as always, efficient and friendly. Wine up to the usual high standard, and reasonably priced.
Birthday Dinner for Two
Booked The Great House for a birthday treat for my Partner and I having eaten in the Dirty Habit and enjoyed the food and atmosphere there. It's a larger venue so a little less cosy but still very comfortable. Food was excellent and staff very friendly. Wouldn't hesitate to book again when we are in the area or to recommend this to friends and family.
Sunday lunch with the family
Another lovely meal at The Great House! Always consistent, the food was really good with lots of choice on the menu. My daughter was being fussy but as always they made any alterations to the menu no problem at all and even let her invent her own dish! So child friendly and they now have fun packs for the kids. After dinner all of the children that were dining that day all went to play in the garden. Nothing is ever too much trouble here and the staff make dining here relaxing and even more enjoyable.
Restaurant was extremely busy but we received excellent service. Our request to be moved from a noisy restaurant to the quieter conservatory area was honoured promptly and without fuss. The food was well cooked and tasty and the helpings generous (the Sunday roast platter was gigantic). This was our first visit but we will return when we are in the area again.
Food is always good quality, restaurant staff are always very polite and helpful. On My 50th Birthday The Great House added another risotto to the menu especially,as my family had informed them that I love risotto!
Very attentive service and excellent food.
Our first visit. We went after going to the cinema and were given a warm welcome. All of the food was excellent and we were well looked after. Quite a buzzy atmosphere.

We have been to the Great House a number of times and have always had a good meal here . My only comment this time is the Gluten Free labelling is confusing ( I am a coeliac ) , for example the cheese and biscuits says gluten free , but I doubt very much if the biscuits are , the roast Sunday lunch also says gluten free , but the yorkshire puddings are not . It is sort of ok if you are used to understanding gluten free options as i have over the last 10 years or so , but to a newcomer to Coeliac disease it would be easy to get caught out . Other than that , the meal was very good as always , service good too , atmosphere good .
Attractive restaurant with a relaxed ambience
Went with friends for an evening meal. The restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere and character. Food was very tasty and the service was efficient and with a smile . Altogether a very enjoyable experience. Would recommend this place and we shall go back again in the near future.
Great Pub, lovely staff, top food.
Not just because The Great House was about 178 metres from our terrific B&B accommodation would I urge any visitors to this beautiful part of the world to make sure they go there for a drink and a meal: we had prebooked for our first night but decided very early on to go back the following evening!
Very good for a birthday treat
We went here for a special occasion, having previously only visited for a snack. It was a good choice. the poached duck egg on my asparagus was cooked to perfection, and the lamb cutlets were beautifully served with spring vegetables. Would go there again for a special meal
Great place for Sunday lunch, in Kent countryside
Fantastic service, we had Sunday lunch for 2 adults and our 1 year old. Lovely food. Roast are perfect. Kids menu was also really nice. Looking forward to going back.
Very satisfactory meal and attentive service. Table for 3 in the bar area, the ambience being spoiled by one noisy-voiced drinking customer.

Another enjoyable visit to The Great House, this time with two friends who unfortunately forgot to put the date in their diary and eventually arrived 45 minutes late! As usual, the staff were very friendly and helpful - allowing us use of the restaurant phone to check on the missing friends and making light of our late running, despite the fact that the kitchen was closing early due to it being a bank holiday. Lovely food and wine, great surroundings, excellent service and very good value.
