A word from The Great House
This 16th century inn set in the heart of the Kentish weald just oozes character and history, with its wealth of exposed beams and a magnificent orangery overlooking the private garden. A traditional lynch gate and a herb garden just add to its charm. The mediterranean-style stone terrace is the ideal place to enjoy summer evenings. Our menu is made up of traditional English cuisine, regional French brasserie-style cuisine created by our chef as well as local seasonal game. You can also choose from a fine selection of ales and wine.Continued

  • "Fantastic meal with the family - food top quality, service efficient and lovely ambience - couldn't fault and will be returning again soon."

  • "We had Sunday lunch at the The Great House. The lady at the bar was most unhelpful and informed us our table was for 3pm and it was only 2.30pm, she managed to say it in such a rude way we almost left. The food was ok but nothing great. They were far too busy and couldn't cope. At the end of our meal we were asked to leave our table and finish our drink in the bar as they had people waiting. We had only been at the table for an hour and a half and had only just finished our dessert as the service was so slow. Very strange place. Could be nice but don't go on a busy Sunday"

  • "We came here as usual after an early evening showing at the local cinema. All the Hungarian staff were very friendly and helpful, the meal excellent though I could probably eaten twice as much of my Guinea Fowl and sweet potatoes. My husband had an excellent steak which was large enough to satisfy. We will definitely return."

  • "Enjoyed the setting , the decor and the service. Oh and the food was really good. Would recommend."

  • "Why have a table set right in front of an aga that is not only on but being used constantly throughout the evening!"

  • "Just to say a big thanks to Alex and his lovely staff for yet another great meal. We always feel so welcome and looked after. To start we had a few plates of San Daniele ham. It was a nice simple starter with bread and olives. Our party had lamb rump-superb, lamb Navarin-very tasty. I hate lamb but have to admit it smelt amazing. We also had the fish board which is a firm favourite. Just love the calamari. Puds were ice cream, the espresso coffee flavour is smooth but not too sweet and cheese which is always great value for money. The Stilton and Wookey Hole cheddar were excellent. Overall a really nice evening. Enjoyed so much we have booked for next Fri."

  • "Had a lovely Sunday lunch with my in-laws. Food was amazing and the service was very good. Look forward to going back again"

  • "I went here for my birthday for lunch with a group of girlfriends and their children. The restaurant was lovely, sun was shining and the children were entertained with colouring pencils and pictures to colour in. Food was delicious and service was great! Look forward to going back"

  • "Overall we had a very nice meal. Good choices but a little mix up with desserts. Largely foreign staff that sometimes caused communication issues but nothing major or insumountable. The whole party commented amongst ourselves that the staff were a bit casually dressed. This was my second visit largely because the first one was such a success. I would go there again."

  • "This was our second visit to The Great House. The name says it all. The staff were very welcoming. Service was with a smile. The food was excellent. The wine menu was very well priced. We'll be back."

  • "Having eaten at The Great House before, I am sad to say that on this visit, I found my meal not to be up to the usual good standard I have experienced on previous visits. I had the baked haddock for a starter, and it really was big enough to be a main course - there was far too much, and I lost interest before I finished. As a main, I chose the blue cheese and pear salad, where I found the accompanying potatoes to be fairly tasteless, and felt the price charged for this dish was way too high. This was a real shame, as I had recommended this pub to the friend I came with. Come on Great House, you can do better than that."

  • "It was a busy Friday night but we had booked a table so no problem. But why did it feel so unwelcoming? It lacked warmth and atmosphere. We shared the seared ham which was good though cut a little thick for my liking. We both had duck maigret which was very good. We ordered from a great selection of ice creams but they got our order wrong! Fair play they remedied it quickly and apologised for the mistake. I ordered a coffee and two arrived. I think there is a language comprehension problem going on here. Then it took ages to attract the attention of the waitresses to ask for the bill as they were too busy setting tables for tomorrow! Why do they not look up from time to time?"
    dined on 28/02/2014
  • "Yet another lovely meal at the Great House. Usual friendly welcome, excellent service and food. Steamed clams and pancetta for starter, game pie for main course. Both delicious, and no room for a dessert!"
    dined on 08/02/2014
  • "When you arrive there is no obvious place to go let someone know you have arrived. We caught a waiter & he was very helpful & got our waitress to show us to our table. Our order was taken & drinks arrived swiftly. The food does take a little while but that I feel is often a good sign of fresh cooking. The food was definitely worth the wait, the portions were good & the food exquisite. We also bought a 'peachy card' which meant we got a great deal!!"

  • "Arrived on a wet and windy Sunday and was delighted to find the pot belly stove blazing away, even better to get a seat next to it for a drink! Friends joined us and we then had a truly sublime Sunday lunch by the open fire, staying several hours and feeling completely at home. Food, service and ambience spot on, as always!"

  • "We went early on Sunday evening. My brill was delicious. My guests also enjoyed their meals.. ( fish & chips, and game pie) The vegetables were good as well, which makes a refreshing change from lots of restaurants who seem to view them as an unimportant detail - ("Hawsmoor" in London springs to mind). My only criticism is that it didnt feel cosy in there, brightly lit, and we were put next to a large party of people in an empty restaurant (it was early) and I didn't particularly want to be right next to them. Having said that, the kids eeeeeee very well behaved. And I should have asked to sit elsewhere, which I'm sure they would have obliged. On the whole good, and I would eat there again (if they will have me!)"

  • "I took my husband here for his birthday treat and we had a superb meal served by excellent staff who were friendly, helpful and quick, in spite of the fact that the restaurant was very full."

  • "We go to The Great House a couple of times a year and the food is always excellent. There is a lovely ambiance in the bar and restaurant with polite and attentive staff. Wide range of local produce and some more unusual choices. The meals are always well presented and seasoned. Good choice of lagers on tap too"

  • "I live locally so every now and then we treat ourselves. Lovely food as usual."

  • "An enjoyable Sunday lunch on a wet weekend with my husband and baby. We started with the fish platter which mildly disappointing. I was particularly excited about the smoked mackerel rilette which sadly didn't live up to my expectations, it was tasteless, poor texture and lacked in flavour. The honey smoked salmon was nice as was the calamari. We ordered our little girl the chicken surpeme which I was expecting in a creamy sauce but it came in a very bland gravy which she was reluctant to eat. The mains were much better and I had the roast platter and enjoyed the roast pork (although it lacked crackling) roast beef and roast lamb (which was the winner. Ice creams and a chocolate fondant followed. A pleasant lunch but sadly not outstanding."

  • "A wonderful Sunday lunch with excellent service. The food was very good, but the service stands head and shoulders above it's competitors. The Goudhurst Inn could learn a lot from this restaurant/pub. Thank you and we look forward to returning soon."

  • "Not often you the combination of country pub with non-english staff come good but in this case it's a treat. Clever twists on good food, generally well served in a good atmosphere where others seemed equally happy to be there."

  • "Birthday celebration meal at The Great House. We were pleasantly surprised to find the restaurant packed on the first Saturday evening of the new year. Despite this, the ever-friendly staff provided their usual excellent service, and the food was up to the normal excellent standard. The Great House remains our favourite place to eat!"

  • "Great food though the Sunday roast felt a little "production line". Lovely setting though the ladies loos were blocked the whole time we were there."
    dined on 08/12/2013
  • "Being a Sunday lunchtime in the run up to Xmas we expected there might be some large family groups, and there were. However for some reason people seem to find the need to talk and shout to each other at such volumes that you cannot hold a sensible conversation with your own table companions. Perhaps it is the natural acoustics of the dining room that exacerbate matters. Be prepared."

  • "We had a most wonderful Sunday lunch with family. The restaurant was full and buzzing creating a great atmosphere - the service was still excellent and the roast dinners were top quality - would thoroughly recommend"

  • "Cosy on a chilly winter evening. Comfortable; cheerful; welcoming staff; attentive but discreet service. Good food. Back soon!"
    dined on 29/11/2013
  • "Sorry to say, I have been a frequent visitor to Great House over the years. However the last few times I have been disappointed probably wont visit again. Main concerns not a very good choice on menu, menu limited, no white meat ie chicken dishes, usually a fall back if rest of menu does not appeal. Find it is now expensive, did not mind when the choice was better. It was a cold day and heating inadequate. Staff helpful and did there best. Overall disappointing usually a good place to meet for lunches, but sadly no more. The mains menu is particularly lacking. One of my friends ordered fish and chips which you would nt normally go in a nice restaurant for. Another ordered a sandwich. Hardly a way to meet and enjoy the company of friends."

  • "I was a member of Anne's party of 4. Ordered mussels as a starter - which came in a small glass bowl without the shells -awful then potted shrimps which came in a small glass dish -- unbelievably poor !!!! Have eaten here before and the standard of food has deteriorated beyond believe."
    dined on 22/11/2013
  • "We dined on a Saturday night and the restaurant was very busy. Consequently, the service was rather slow. However, the food was freshly prepared and extremely palatable all, that is, except for my wife's plum pudding, which was distinctly dull and stodgy. The atmosphere was lively, the bill wasn't too steep and the overall experience, despite the slow service and dodgy stodgy pudding, was great."
    dined on 23/11/2013
  • "Just had another great meal at The Great House. Mussels in Ale were a lovely starter. Meaty and tasty. Fish and chips good as usual and Beef in Ale from Aga went down a treat. All of The Aga Meals have so far been very good. We always have the cheese board as it is great value for money and the cheeses are really excellent. Even the cheddar is beautiful, as it can sometimes be a little boring. Thanks to the super-friendly staff for making it another lovely evening."
    dined on 22/11/2013
  • "We shared a delicious terrine for a starter then Lamb Navarin and partner had a Game Pie for main accompanied by a big variety of vegetables - which is unusual and that's what made the meal special. So many restaurants limit the amount of vegetables they serve. Would highly recommend the Great House for a special occasion."
    dined on 16/11/2013
  • "This was our first visit to the Great House, Staff were very welcoming, however people who had arrived after us were being served before we were. One of our party had to remind the staff that she'd ordered a glass of wine before it was served. There was a long wait for the mains but we did receive an apology for that. My meal was Seafood Thermidor, followed by Sea Bass and then Chocolate Fondant. The Seafood Thermidor and Chocolate Fondant were superb but the Sea Bass although tasty was very disappointing. There was very little meat on the fish and far too many bones! It's not a main course that I would choose again."
