A word from The Gate Hammersmith
Adrian and Michael Daniel have been running London's most successful vegetarian restaurant since December 1989. We have received numerous citations of excellence from various bodies and been nominated for several food awards over the years, winning Timeout's 'Best Vegetarian Meal' award in 1992. We source our ingredients with care, using only the freshest produce and organic where possible including free range eggs. We always have a selection of vegan dishes or vegan options. The wine menu offers a selection of organic, vegan and vegetarian wines. We try to be aware of our carbon footprint and try reducing it by recycling our waste and buying where possible from companies that are carbon offsetting. We hope you enjoy you visit,

Diner Reviews
  • "The overall experience was rather disappointing. The food lacked in quality and quantity. The sauce in my wild mushroom polenta completely ruined my meal- too over powering, could barely taste the mushrooms. Hardly any salad or broccoli and around 5 lentils. Contrary to the description. Disappointing. The service was poor. Perhaps under-staffed on the night. Its a shame as i have been to the Gate Islington several times in the past and thought I would try out the Hammersmith restaurant for a change. Its safe to say i will not be back."

  • "Had a great experience at The Gate. The food was excellent, service was good, and had an enjoyable time overall. Highly recommended!"

  • "visited the gate hammersmith with two non veggie friends, and the fact that they enjoyed the meal is somewhat of a compliment to the chef. the service however lacked a bit of attentiveness, but the atmosphere was that of a pleasant weekday break."

  • "Had been to The Gate 8 years ago, had loved the food, but did not think much about the desserts. Well, the toilets are much improved (!) the mezze of starters was FABULOUS, the mains very good... but the mezze of desserts let's the place down badly. The trifle tasted medicinal, the chocolate tart way too bitter, the crumble was unremarkable. The orange crème brûlée should have been more tangy, but it's got potential. Service was OK, though it took time to persuade them to let us sit nearer the window, and we got told off for being 15 mins late (OK, our fault, we got lost. Still, not a nice way to start a transaction)."

  • "Honestly the food was incredible, really really good and even better than the last time I went. Great depth of flavour and variety. However, whilst the waiters were friendly and courteous, they couldn't remember anything. We asked for more oil, which they never came back with. Fine one mistake, that's acceptable. Then I asked for another beer, which they said they would bring right away. They didn't. I asked again 5 minutes later. Still didn't bring it. However, they did try and charge me for another one, although they were totally fine when I asked to take it off as I hadn't received it. When I went to the toilets, people waiting were all in agreement that whilst the food was fantastic the service was pretty poor."

  • "I cannot recommend this restaurant, or more importantly, the food it serves, more wholeheartedly. I could go on, (and I often do), but I won't. It's superb, I urge you to eat there and agree with me. Have ordered the cookbooks so that I can attempt to replicate at home some of the best food I have ever eaten in a restaurant. (Given that I'm also a committed carnivore, I rest my case.)"

  • "Although very close to the Hammersmith Apollo, the Gate is a little tricky to find as it is literally hidden away behind an imposing gate. Having been recently renovated, the restaurant is bright and gives the impression of dining al fresco. The food was extremely good. I love borscht and have enjoyed it across Central and Eastern Europe, but I must say the beetroot soup at The Gate was up there with the best. The main course of aubergine schnitzel was equally good with the only disappointment being that I was too full to have dessert (was torn in any case between the fig crumble and the orange creme brulee). I highly recommend this restaurant not only for vegetarians but for anyone interested in delicious, healthy food."

  • "One of the best London restaurants in London with a purely vegetarian/vegan menu. Wonderful to have the choice and to go beyond the usual veggie lasagne/goat's cheese tart that every restaurant seems to serve. Inventive and creative ideas here."

  • "We booked in for a meal on a trip to London. The resturant is really nice , once we found it , walked past it once & had to ask in a local shop ! The service was good, staff nice & friendly, the food was wonderful. Being a veggie it makes a lovely treat to have so much choice. We would definitely recommend this to veggies & non- veggies who appreciate good food. We were a little suprised on the obligatory 12.5% service charge! we like to decide ourselves on tipping service and normally in cash to the waiter/waitress as you don't know if they benefit if it's in with the bill."

  • "Been here several times and the food is always good, even if you're a non veggie you'll enjoy the food. However it does seem to have got more expensive recently but not overpriced."

  • "Took my mum to The Gate for mothers day. As she is a veggie its nice she can have free choice, we had the mezze starter between 3 of us, very nice but you would struggle to eat it between 2. The mains were great, but you have to have the coconut & lime cheesecake it was amazing. Who needs meat! Well I do, but its nice to go somewhere different."

  • "We have dined quite a few times at The Gate over the past 10 years or so, and always enjoyed it. So we were sad to hear that they had closed, but fortunately their refurbishment has kept the best bits and improved the others. Although our (Spanish) waitress was a little on the miserable side, the maitre d' couldn't do enough to be helpful - as we had arrived almost 30 minutes late because of heavy traffic, he re-jigged the table bookings so that we had an extra 15 minutes (which in the end we didn't need) to finish our meal before the next guests took over our table. The food is fantastic - almost better than before it closed - so we'll definitely be back! I'm also looking forward to eating in the courtyard in the summer, which is divine."

  • "Best veggie restaurant around. My dish was on good not excellent for a change. But I'll always go back!"

  • "Went with friends to celebrate birthday - they are vegans/vegetarians so excellent choice for them. Despite a problem with the small pointed part of a toothpick embedded in my first course (only noticed once in mouth and chewing it.) Alerted the staff who dealt with it promptly and explained that the toothpicks are used in the preparation of the roasted vegetables and had accidently (obviously) not been removed before the vegetarian tart was prepared. Offered their apologies and a complimentary first course. For a meal costing £100+ thought they could have been more generous and also remove the service charge!"
    dined on 20/03/2014
  • "Went with some vegetarian friends so that they could have better options than are usually available in restaurants. The food was pleasant enough but I got the feeling it was not freshly prepared."

  • "Shows how good vegetarian food can be. Also good service."

  • "The gate delivers delicious food that even the most avid meat eater would appreciate. Wide variety of wines to choose from. Mushrooms and polenta and the ice cream flavours were highlights!"

  • "Our first visit to the Gate was very pleasing. Extremely friendly and attentive staff. Food was delicious - tasty, with a Mediterranean edge. Although outstanding in terms of quality - I would make a couple of points: 1) the chairs were a bit uncomfortable - little back support (I am very sensitive to this, I admit). 2) My aubergine schnitzel was not piping hot in the centre. 3) The sauces tend to be a bit over creamy for my taste. Having said all that - I bought the cookery books and will definitely return!"

  • "I was a vegetarian for 5 years and The Gate was the place I'd always take meat-eating friends to show them how exciting veggie food can be. I was excited to go back after the refurbishment and I wasn't disappointed. The food is still wonderful and well thought out. The service too is impeccable and The Gate remains one of my favourite places to go."

  • "The Gate is in a wonderful space that was cozy, we especially liked the wooden walls. The food was incredible and did not disappoint"

  • "The Gate has been a hidden gem in Hammersmith as i've worked around the corner for years years and didn't know it was there, but this also adds to the lovely ambiance to the Gate. Now I have been once I will definitely be going back along with my work colleagues. The food and staff were outstanding and it's a super relaxing restaurant for an afternoon meal. Thanks :-)"

  • "We love going to The Gate for special occasions or for a treat and have been doing so for a number of years. The Gate at Angel is nice but Hammersmith is generally much more convenient for us us and we're pleased it is now open again. The food is great and is definitely not run of the mill veggie fare. We've taken carnivores there sometimes and they've enjoyed it too."
    dined on 17/03/2014
  • "I took my wife (as a vegetarian) to The Gate last night to celebrate our anniversary. As a non-vegetarian myself, I was more than pleasantly surprised at both the quality of food and service we received - I'd go as far as to say this was one of the best meals I have had for quite some time. I would highly recommend the fritters to start with and the aubergine schnitzel main which was an absolute winner. We look forward to visiting The Gate again in future and will most definitely be recommending this to our friends and family (both non-veg and veg!)"
    dined on 17/03/2014
  • "My friend and I were checking out this restaurant for a larger celebration later this year. I loved the food and the service was excellent. The portions were good and the range of vegetarian food also good and seasonal. My only concern was the way we were packed in like sardines which made it difficult to talk with my friend. I will definitely book it for my group celebration!"

  • "Although I am a meet lover I'm always game for trying new places to eat. The Gate was brilliant, service was great, good options for starts mains and something sweet. Main course was the aubergine schnitzel (which seemed to be a popular choice at the restaurant), wasn't too heavy and the taste was amazing (didn't need any extra seasoning). Will be going back very soon and recommending it to others!"

  • "As a vegetarian foodie I struggle in most places. The vegetarain 'option' is usually one thing - pasta, risotto or something with goats cheese. So while my party hums and has about the range of delights on the menu i take what I am given which is often poorly and disrespectfully prepared. At The Gate I want to eat everything on the menu - even the pasta. And meat eating friends have no complaints either. I have never eaten anything that was not utterly delicious there. Don't be deterred by the entrance from the road that looks a bit religious. The Gate has no hidden agenda. And the internal remake is stylish as befits its previous life as painter Frank Brangwyn's studio. The only reservation I have is that it can be a bit noisy."
    dined on 11/03/2014
  • "One of the best vegetarian restaurants in London. And since the refurb, even better! The mezze starter sharing plate is always a great deal, and the portions are filling."
    dined on 21/02/2014
  • "My very first visit to The Gate - definitely not the last one! Love the open space and sunny dinning room. My food was simple yet delicious. Highlight of my meal - polenta chips. Would love to see more vegan friendly desserts though - perhaps raw cakes?"

  • "Very inventive recipes with vegeterian food. Very tasty and a great atmosphere. Would definitely return"

  • "Amazing restaurant with outstanding food and service !"

  • "The food here is the attraction The Gate Hammersmith remains simply the best veggie option in London. Non veggie foody friends have it down as their favourite restaurant, which is a pretty good recommendation. Go!"
    dined on 08/03/2014
  • "Our party of 4 were under time pressure to eat before going to a 7.30 theatre performance so we had a 6.00pm reservation with just over an hour to order & eat. One of us (the one who was a bit late arriving) is a big lad needing a full dinner & not convinced vegetarian food could be worthwhile. We were so impressed by the way our orders were expedited - the waitress was fully on the case and obviously the kitchen followed through. So we all ate very well, were impressed by the food and look forward to our next opportunity to eat at the Gate with no time constraints.....and there's a new convert to vegetarian cuisine. But overall, hats off to that waitress! A star!"

  • "The food is very good. The acoustic bad, much noise. The wine too expensive."

  • "The manager at the Hammersmith Gate transferred from the Islington branch, providing an outstanding level of customer service, making each diner feel welcomed and well cared for. There are always several tempting choices on the menu and it's difficult to choose. Every dish is colourful & attractive, and the taste is a beautiful combination of flavours, bite after bite. The high ceilings and large artist studio window give The Gate a special occasion vibe."

  • "All the food was very good except the coconut main Special dish was rather sweet. It was more like having a desert for a main course. Sorry, but you did ask. Staff were attentive and charming, seats were comfy and ambience was good. I was pleased to find the restaurant."

  • "We were a group of 6, two of us being vegan, and we all loved the menu options we chose. The food at the Gate is full of delicious flavours and textures and is beautifully presented. I would recommend this to anyone, as the staff are friendly & helpful, and it is a true gastronomic experience in a relaxed, stylish setting."

  • "We went for lunch on a Saturday and it was a real delight! The building is nice and modern and tucked away from the crowds, near to Hammersmith yet very close to the river. The building is light and airy and had a pleasant ambiance. There was a warm welcome and service was friendly and prompt. I noticed that the waitress and other staff member/owner on the restaurant floor spoke a few languages not just English so could chat with fellow diners about the menu and so forth. We ordered a bag/basket of bread and olive oil, which was lovely, very well presented and extremely tasty. The mains we selected were the same the aubergine schnitzel a standout item, it sounded so nice and didn't fail on taste or presentation! We will be coming back!"
