Diner Reviews
  • "Of all the restaurants that I vista around the country, the Daffodil is at the top of the list for me. The atmosphere, the setting, the level of service and most importantly the excellence of the food. I have yet to have a meal that does not come up to my expectation."

  • "Went for a celebratory meal, fantastic food & service, couldn't have been more welcoming"

  • "We use this restaurant regularly and can feel confident about taking friends , the food is very good, the menu changes regularly and the service is always good, the only down side is that when the restaurant is very full, the noise level makes it difficult to have conversation."

  • "Great service in a fantastic setting. Eat off the early bird menu which was excellent value for money we will definitely go back to eat off the a la carte"

  • "Converted art deco cinema. Took my wife here for birthday treat. They gave us a booth as requested. Phoned beforehand to tell us the bar would be closed, this was considerate. Not entirely convinced by main courses, which were a little bland for us, we probably made the wrong choices off the menu with hindsight. Starters were good, wine and dessert excellent. Staff friendly, attentive, welcoming. Prices surprisingly fair considering the quite grand venue. Not our usual type of restaurant, and quite noisy due to the large space and hard surfaces, but it was great to see somewhere that was so different and where someone had used a great deal of imagination to create a magnificent venue. This was a memorable evening (in a good way)."

  • "Very pleasantly surprised how the restaurant manager dealt with an issue with two of the meals, makes a lovely change from the sometimes rude and offensive reaction that can be dealt out by some restaurants of lower quality who clearly do not understand the basics of good customer service. For that reason alone I would not hesitate to make a 5th visit to the Daffodil."

  • "The food was delicious! I took my mum for her birthday for a treat, and the lunch time menu is great value with excellent food."

  • "This is a delightful place in every respect, though perhaps one should consider the food as of paramount importance. We had a wonderful evening, incomparable food and service, relaxed surroundings and in a most impressive building. We started with cocktails, although the occasion was not special, but somehow the ambience of the place seemed the right place to do so! Food was well-presented and of excellent quality, superbly cooked and delicious to eat; our waitress was friendly and charming, and we found it a very pleasant way to spend an evening-and cannot wait to return."

  • "We were celebrating our grown up daughter's birthday at the Daffodil with lunch. We were fortunate to have a really good table just underneath the jazz band. At first I was a little worried that they may have been too loud and make conversation difficult but in fact the singer and her 3 musicians were very mellow and it proved a fantastic backdrop. I don't know how good it would have been without the band so if you like that sort of thing then check with the restaurant first as they don't always have a band on. The service was impeccable and friendly, and the food was very good if not quite being exceptional. The ambiance however is everything and as an overall package it would be hard to beat anywhere in Cheltenham or Glos."

  • "Beautiful setting, definitely a wow factor when you walk through the door! Pleasant afternoon tea and glad that we were checked back and offered more water! Were the cakes home made? Be nice if they were! It would also be nice to be told what the cakes are, we just had to guess! You have an establishment with great potential!"

  • "I have been going to this restaurant for over 7 years and have enjoyed each visit. The menu is imaginative. The food is elegant and made from produce of the highest quality."

  • "Beautiful restaurant. The high tea was lovely too. Service was great. There was a mix up with timings but they were able to accommodate us without too much fuss."

  • "Chose the Daffodil as I'd not been for years and the menu looked just right for the occasion. The restaurant did not disappoint - decor perfect for the historical use of the building; food very good (went for the early bird menu which is great value); staff polite and attentive without being too fussy. Recommended."

  • "Came here for my mum's 70th birthday. Very special evening in a beautiful restaurant. Ambiance was perfect & staff couldn't have been more welcoming. A truly memorable occasion."

  • "I took my Mum here for a pre-mothers day lunch. The venue itself blew our minds when we walked in, the staff were friendly and attentive and the live jazz was surprising, a delight (neither myself nor my Mum are very experienced with jazz, but we enjoyed it very much) . The food was amazing and as we had chosen from the "Dailies" menu, was great value for money. I would highly recommend the Dailies menu for lunch, I will certainly be going back to sample the full menu in the evening, which looked simply delicious."

  • "As per usual the Daffodil always delivers a superb dining experience. My wife and I have been coming here for years and will continue to do so for many years to come."

  • "Was lovely with live music and the food was good value (set menu). Shame the service was a bit sloppy."

  • "We were in Cheltenham for a family wedding and this was the perfect start to the weekend. There was a lovely buzz in the restaurant, and the whole setting of the old picture house was well thought out. We also had very helpful service from the staff."

  • "Probably one of the best restaurants on Cheltenham. You can get better food, you can get better service, you can get a better ambiance, but not all in one place"
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "Super food but we felt overlooked on the table for two directly opposite the front doors, falling between everyone else. We waited 45 minutes for our starter, asked if they could chase it, ate it, our dishes were removed and one minute later our main course followed. So what was that all about? At over £100 we felt we deserved better service. Our waitress was pleasant and friendly but seemed unable to juggle her covers. Shame because the food was divine!!"

  • "We went on a Monday evening to the jazz night. The music was great and the building itself is fantastic, makes for a very impressive back drop. Food was very nice (although not the highlight) and reasonable if you have the early bird menu. All round - great meal! Will definitely go back."
    dined on 24/03/2014
  • "Stunning looks - great ambience - still the feel of a cinema! Cocktail bar is upstairs in the 'Balcony' - lovely to sit in pre dinner After starters - We shared the Chateaubriand - great sharing meal! Too full for dessert - great shame Minor gripes - Table a little small for all the bits that go with a Chateaubriand"

  • "Excellent food and great service but it's the noisiest restaurant we've ever eaten in. The noise level was akin to a massive secondary school lunch hall at maximum capacity and volume, the room was very boomy and we struggled to hear the waiting staff, couples conversation was impossible. It was quite uncomfortable and certainly spoiled a couples night. I would return but only as a large party, like the large Hen party or table of twelve birthday party we were seated in-between."

  • "Unique experience as The Daffodil was originally a Theatre/Cinema. The old atmosphere and charm has been preserved and it is well worth a visit to experience this. Enjoyed the starter, its a long time since I had Black Pudding! but it brought back fond memories. The main course of, open steak pie, was very open! lacked vegetables, just two small pieces of carrot! The gravy was tasty which is fortunate as the beef was not. This was not a pie of any kind. It was a beef stew with a small disc of thin pastry on the side. No one suggested that we needed to order veg to go with it to make it into a meal. We have dined here quite a few times in the past and have been very satisfied. Has there been a change of ownership?"

  • "we came up to cheltenaham from london for the weekend and went to daffodil after a couple of people recommended it & also promising reviews on trip advisor. it's quite a cool place (old cinema) but they could do so much more with it. for example, break up the huge dining area a bit to make it more intimate. i found it lacking in atmosphere. the staff were fine but nothing to remark upon. food was unremarkable too. wish we'd stayed in our hotel bedroom watching films and ordering room service"

  • "We used to come to The Dafodil when we visited Cheltenham to go shopping but now it's the reason we visit the town. This time it was for my birthday and yet again it was a fantastic experience. From the Vesper martini through to the shared Indulgence dessert all was superb. The staff as ever are one of the restaurants main assets and must be congratulated on their professionalism. Happy diners!"

  • "I took my Mother to the Daffodil to celebrate her 89th birthday. I have used the Daffodil before for similar events, and have never been disappointed. After one such occasion a friend who attended from Devon was so impressed he decided to hold his 70th birthday lunch there. The foot, the staff the atmosphere are just right for me. The setting is unique, and appeals to me, but I can see that some people may find it a little austere. It is currently ranked 27th on TripAdviser, this in my view grossly under estimates the restaurant, it should be much higher, I would say it should be in the top 3."

  • "It was all perfect. Even the over enthusiastic man opening the doors on arrival. The table location was good with good view of the room and the band. The building itself has so many stories to tell and it has been allowed to tell them beautifully. The food and the band, the cocktails and the service are doing this lovely venue absolute justice. Well done to all involved. We will definitely return alone or with friends. Thank you for a lovely evening. PS. To the barman: " your Old Cuban is great""

  • "Great place. Asked for a booth seat as it was for a bday and we got the best seat in the house. The best cocktails I have had in a while (and I've been to zumu in London) and by far one of the best steaks I have ever had... A bit pricey but u don't mind paying if the food and drink is that good. The waiters were fun and energetic with an unusual setting it was the best time out for a long time. Would defo go again."

  • "Loved the whole dining experience at the Daffodil, excellent food and very professional service, the scallops starter was amazing, as were our fish and pork mains, we will definately be going again. Only down side to the evening was waiting 45 minutes for a cocktail upstairs during a not particulary busy period, we eventually left without our drink but it certainly didnt spoil our night!!"

  • "Despite it being Cheltenham Gold Cup week we were still able to book a table online for a late lunch. The menu was very good and the service quick. It was our daughter's birthday and we took her and her boyfriend out to lunch. He is a cocktail specialist by profession and was very impressed with both the choice on offer and the flavours. Far better than most. I cant recommend this venue highly enough. It never disappoints and having eaten in other fine dining restaurants in Cheltenham we still put this at the top."
    dined on 11/03/2014
  • "Food was lovely, hovever, no chicken on the menu, which was very odd I thought. We had the chateaubriand, which was perfectly cooked and served, but a bit overpriced at £55.00. Service was very slow both in the restaurant and the cocktail bar. We waited about 5 minutes for our first cocktail, so when they came, we ordered another straightaway. We weren' t in a particular rush so it didnt mind that the food was slow, but you get a bit twitchy when you keep have=ing to mither the waiting staff."
    dined on 10/03/2014
  • "Fantastic food! The Scallops were possibly the best restaurant starter I have ever had. Suggest you arrive a little earlier and have a cocktail in the bar. Not an inexpensive night out, but well worth it for a special occasion."

  • "Booked Sat. lunch for mother, 2 daughters and me on IWDay. Live jazz makes this a special event and celebration for two birthdays. Wonderful fresh menu for vegetarian and fish eaters. Sharing platter for desert was amazing and brought gasps from next table. Staff were delightful and the manager went home to get a cushion for my disabled mother! This is not a cheap venue but cocktails are fabulous and food memorable. Highly recommend this place with Jazz on Sat. lunchtime and Mon. evenings."

  • "I've been a few times to this restaurant and In fact it is one of my top 10 but for se reason the service wasn't as good as normal and when paying Nr 100£ for 2 people I felt let down this time by service"
    dined on 04/03/2014
  • "When we went there was a jazz band playing which created a wonderful atmosphere and wasn't intrusive. We did the set lunch menu which was good value."
    dined on 01/03/2014
  • "2 or 3 course fixed price lunch menu was extremely good value. The food freshly prepared, imaginative, delicious and came to the table hot - the last point being not difficult to manage you might think, but I've had plenty of less than hot food delivered to the table at various establishments. The service was terrific from the moment you walk through the door and they offer to take you coat. Its a big place and our experience was definitely enhanced by the fact that we were upstairs looking down on a crowd celebrating St David's day, (one day early!). My Mum, who at the age of 80 is a fierce critic, had nothing but good things to say about the food and the ambience and the service, so congratulations The Daffodil on making our day!"

  • "This was our first visit to The Daffodil but we will be making this place a regular on our circuit especially for the live Jazz on Mondays. The food is terrific - I had the salmon plate to start and the wood pigeon for a main - both were delicious and perfectly sized portions. My husband had the crispy pig's ear to start which was amazing and then the scallops for a main. We were eating lightly because we had just come from a wine tasting but look forward to sampling some of the delish organic beef on the menu next time. This Art Deco/Mondrian movie theater has been delightfully transformed into a multi-level space where the main attraction is watching the open kitchen perform on the stage to the tune of live jazz music."
