Diner Reviews
  • "Our champagne came with wine glasses not flutes, the coffees had long been drunk before the petit fours arrived, and the acoustics need softening with some fabrics before we dare take our in-laws, but these are minor teething issues for the new team at The Cross. The staff were bright, cheery and eager to please. And as for the food…. The scallop ravioli was a very pretty sight; the beef cheek melted in the mouth and was accompanied by all sorts of perfectly prepared morsels; if you ever thought cabbage was not for you then give the side dish a go – mouth-watering; nice puds, and then the final highlight in the form of those petit fours – heaven on a stick! Welcome back Andreas… we have missed Simpsons in town. Our meal was yummy."

  • "Welcome back to the Cross. Food as great as we expected, service also very good, a few teething problems, but only the 4th day. Go try it! For my wife and I, the best place to dine in Warwickshire in our opinion. Well done Andreas."

  • "I can't comment on all categories above after just one visit. Disappointed by menu. I had been recommended by a friend and had looked on line at the menu which bore no resemblance to actual menu which has a very poor choice -.just a very few dishes- and each of us would probably not normally have selected what the low choice offered. The food, however, was exceptional-each course beautifully cooked and presented. The staff were excellent - friendly, very helpful,;extremely efficient and very accommodating. All the staff who waited on us were very impressive and worthy of praise. We enjoyed the evening very much but will be disappointed if the menu doesn't become more extensive following the refurbishment."

  • "Very relaxed atmosphere, but intimate at the same time. Staff were very attentive without being in your face and only interupted when was appropiate. Special diet was catered for at the highest level i've ever experienced and all traces of gluten were removed, without compromising the taste of the meal. Only bad point was hubby was brought the wrong dessert and although the staff apoligised, there was no refund given, even though i had eaten mine before his new dessert arrived. Not the cheapest place, but you get what you pay for and we would happily pay it again. Will be going back."

  • "I booked the cross for myself and my boyfriend's 3rd year anniversary, we have visited the cross previously a few times in a big group and have always enjoyed it. Once again the cross didn't disappoint, the food was gorgeous, the staff were lovely and we had a really nice meal. The value for money is outstanding, I have paid at least double elsewhere for the same standard of food. I will continue to visit the cross, thank you for making our day very special."

  • "The location in Kenilwirth is such that it is not struck by traffic on the high street and the decor and ambience is very good."

  • "We went for a 50 th birthday celebration. Booked table on line before hand - still rang to make sure it was OK. - nice guy on phone said. " don't worry - we will look after you ". Sat outside at a quite battered table - there were 5 in our party so they'd put two table together - which were different heights. Not so slick. However the waitresses were attentive, even if it did take 20 mins for drinks to arrive. Orders were placed , and turned up another 20 mins later- they were busy. Smoked salmon starter was really excellent and beautifully presented. Pork main meal same - not massive, but enough , and cooked expertly - pulled pork croquette was lovely. Everyone had a good meal and we will definitely go back for the food."

  • "Fantastic food and lovely surroundings - but as first time and potential repeat visitors we did not expect to be seated at a table immediately next to the kitchen and servery. The service was poor - wine glasses were removed from table without our being asked if we would be having any wine; the amuse-bouche arrived at the same time as the starters - and the staff didn't seem to understand why that was an issue; and generally we found the staff to be rather supercilious. The food was excellent, but the whole dining experience was spoilt by the poor service. We shall not be returning."

  • "The Cross is always a great experience for dinner out on special occasions. However i have always thought that the benches you sit on in the restaurant are too low and slightly uncomfortable. I always end up with back ache..."

  • "The service was poor. We had to wait 20 minutes for our table despite having pre booked. The white wine we chose was not cold and was poor quality. We had scallops for our first course, they were delicious but only lukewarm. Two of us had Turbot for our main course which was delicious. The other two had Ribeye steak which was of variable quality and quite tough in parts. Overall, we felt that the service was sloppy."

  • "The food was excellent and the service was generally good. However, when you turn up as a couple, I never like being seated right next to another couple when the restaurant is very quiet. There is really no need for this, it just makes life easier for the serving staff. Does limit conversation, I find, and I don't appreciate having to listen to the conversation on the next table. Saying that, as the restaurant filled up and the ambient noise level rose, it became somewhat more comfortable as an occasion. However, the food made up for that and I would readily visit again."

  • "Great food, wonderfully presented and really enjoyed the evening. We all cleared our plates and did that satisfied sigh after!"

  • "Website and printout stated the fixed price menu was available from 6-7pm (this was not the case when we arrived) Service was very good and great setup and location. Disappointed with certain elements of the dining, in particular the pasta dishes lacked any flavour and taste, expected a lot more based upon reputation but sadly would not consider dining there again when considering quality vs cost."

  • "Went with aged parents for Sunday Lunch, which was excellent and very reasonable. Service was good throughout. Very pleasant decor"

  • "Took my mum out for a birthday lunch at The Cross last Sunday, I don't live in the area and hadn't been before so I was really pleased to have made the right choice with booking The Cross at Kenilworth. We had a really enjoyable time. The atmosphere was warm and relaxed, the staff were very friendly and attentive and the food was delicious. I think for the quality of the food, which was all really fresh and beautifully presented, the Sunday lunch 3 courses for £20 is excellent value. Would recommend. If I lived a bit closer would return more regularly!"

  • "This was our second visit to the Cross. The welcome was warm and the service attentive but not intrusive. Food was very well presented and tasty. Hard to chose from so many things. Desserts were perhaps a bit TOO fancy, but we chose specials that were excellent."

  • "We've eaten at plenty of Michelin starred restaurants and so didn't expect lots from a restaurant selling starters at £6 and mains from £15. The flavours in the starter were as good as any we have tried, with the balance of flavours and refinement being the only thing different. The mains were also very good, with improvements to made to be excellent but very good value for money. You can get some terrible food in some terrible pubs for the same price as the cross. Service was good, but maybe the waiter/ess could have smiled a little more. We booked again straight away to come back in a few weeks. Overall, don't expect brilliance, but this restaurant sells very well cooked food at very reasonable prices."

  • "We went to The Cross for lunch on Sunday and felt underwhelmed by the whole experience. The food was alright, service ok and the surroundings adequate. If the cost was half the price we would have been impressed but at this price we expected more. Lunch wasn't terrible but was just average - the Cross is trying to be something it's not!"
    dined on 24/03/2013
  • "We eat here often as I believe it is the best place in Kenilworth. This time around we had 5/6 good dishes - one main was bad covered in charcoal type dust and just tasted bad. Nevertheless the desserts are divine and are a highlight of the cross. We will return again soon"

  • "We had an outstanding lunch at the Cross in Kenilworth. Everything was beautifully thought out from the service to the delicious dishes. We chose from the Prix Fixe menu which had a lot of choice. The ox cheek was the best I've ever tasted and the other two guests were thoroughly pleased with their choices. Would definitely reccomend and will be going there again soon!"

  • "On arrival, initial greeting was 'I know you asked for a private table but this is the best we can do as we are fully booked' we were sat in the walk way by the bar, rather than in one of the dining rooms. Food was of a good standard and well presented however we were given one small bowl of vegetables between three people we asked for another bowl the waitress said ok and returned a few minutes later and said if you wanted more vegetables it would be a further charge, we then waited another 5 minutes for more to arrive. Overall, didn't feel valued as customers, we were a small party and were treated more like a minor inconvenience. Lastly on receipt of the bill we had been overcharged for drinks, this was put right when queried."

  • "I had not been to the Cross in a while but the food and service are still very good and I would definitely go back again. We were not rushed and were allowed to take our time over our meal/drinks, however, the service was very attentive and the overall evening was great."

  • "We booked a table for 4 at The Cross for their Prix Fixe menu, £16 for 3 courses, this was on their website and on the menu we were given on arrival. However, we were told this had been replaced by the Early Bird Menu, 2 courses for £25 and a bottle of wine. We explained we had come for the advertised Prix Fixe menu and did not want wine so were offered and accepted the Prix Fixe menu, this was good value and good food. Would return if this offer continues but not if the Early Bird offer is on as it is not what we wanted. I do hope they re-print menus and change website. Al in all, lovely restaurant, good service, good food and good value at 3 courses for £16."

  • "We had a lovley meal as always. Took advantage of the "early bird" offer really good value but a bit quiet this early in the evening (The whole point I guess)"

  • "A great meal was had by all the family. It was child friendly in the fact that our whole family were welcomed but the menu wasn't too child friendly. However they were more than happy to serve her 2 side dishes which were more than she needed!"

  • "A friend and I dined at the cross 29/12/12 and our table was booked for a late sitting due toe finishing work late. I was worried that this might affect our service or that the staff would be tidying away around us etc but this was definitely not the case. We weren't hassled to order our food and drinks very quickly and the staff were excellent at meeting our needs. We both had 3 courses and the food was superb and presented beautifully! I can honestly say, we both had a fantastic evening and we left extremely satisfied customers! The bill came to £47.75 altogether for 2 x 3 courses and 1 green tea and a Pepsi. The food was worth every penny and I can't exaggerate enough that it was faultless. I will definitely visit again!"

  • "Our family had another lovely Xmas Eve Meal at the Cross, we have always used this venue for the last 8 years for our Xmas Eve special meal together.. the set meal suited our appetite and was of good quality through out. As ever the Service was relaxed but always efficient and the whole experience was really well received by all our family , many thanks The Parker Family"

  • "This used to be a favourite of ours, but this trip was not up to scratch. Great setting and fun, enticing menu, with some good highlights. But, the service was slow and the food quality quite variable (the microwaved veg being a notable low). What was noticeable was how quiet the restaurant was... a few days before Christmas in past years would have seen a packed room full of diners thoroughly revelling in the atmosphere of The Cross... but not this year. Our experience was still above average, but not up to the previous standards set by The Cross."

  • "We turned up to the Cross and found it to be a very attractive restaurant. We were quickly seated and coats taken, then promptly offered drinks and menu's. The food was very good even though I had a starter (soup of the day) which was not to my taste. The service we received throughout the evening was excellent but sadly, considering that I was paying a premium for this restaurant we were seated uncomfortably close to other patrons. A very nice evening but I just feel I paid over the odds for it. Cannot say enough to show how friendly the staff were."

  • "Premises very cold when we arrived and had to keep coats on. This improved as more people arrived. We ate off the set menu 3 course for £16 which was excellent value. Food choices were all very good. Service very prompt and friendly. Food excellent. Offered a plate of fudge with tea/coffee and thought it was a nice gesture till we found £3.50 charge on the bill for 6 pieces of fudge. Overall very good but spoilt by cold start and fudge silly money."
