The Chequers Ratings and Reviews
Unfortunately the dinner was not good. All was Ok on arrival although service a little slow but is was peak time on a Saturday night so understandable. Starters were fine the issue was with the steaks. 3 out of 6 were overcooked by some amount which for a steak restaurant is very unexpected. When 1 steak was sent back no apology was given and it took another 20 minutes to get the new one, when it arrived dumped on the plate no garnish of mushrooms or tomato that were originally there, no can of chips just again dumped on the plate. It was all too late so the guest decided not to have a main course and although after we complained we were offered free desserts the way it was dealt with was poor and not customer service in any way. In my view unfortunately I would not return, steaks not cheap although happy with paying if quality and cooked correctly. Overall don't think they could cope with it being busy!
Very good food, great service.
Just popped in for a midweek lunch. Great food, great service. Can't fault it.
Good deal on tues for ribs. Always enjoyed eating here, but service a let them down this time. Seated and drinks brought promptly, but then waited ages for food order to be taken, when it wasn't even busy.
A fabulous lunch, we were a table of 4 adults and twin two year olds. steak pies and a carvery was ordered - the pie was packed with meat and delicious, the carvery was the best I've had - succulent meat and vegetables that were freshly cooked. The children were happy as we asked for their meals to come first. Great place to go. I will go back!
The best cavery ever!
The best cavery ever!
If you enjoy a good steak this is the place for you. Cooked exactly as you want it too, this can so often be a let down in other restaurants. Ribs fell off the bone! Good wine list. I can feel a return visit coming soon!
One of the best meals of my life.
It's hard to say whether the food or the service was better, but suffice to say that both were excellent. Not at all pushy, but informative and friendly. The steaks were priced according to weight, so you could have as much as you want (they were freshly cut to order.) Not cheap, but excellent value for what you pay. I would recommend this place unreservedly.
Dinner at the Chequers
Booked a table to celebrate our 43 wedding anniversary our first visit after looking at reviews. We were not disappointed the food was excellent. We both settled on fillet steaks (butchers block) for main which were with extras - triple cooked chips, creamed spinach with tomato/onion salad and we were not disappointed. Bypassed the starters because 3 course seemed too much, my wife choose the Macadamia cheese cake with ice cream for sweet which was excellent. Good wines and local rebellion beer complimented the evening. The service we thought was excellent and we will be returning in the not so distant future. Our only regret was not trying it earlier price was approx. £50 per head.
I took my significant other here for a romantic early evening Saturday meal, The place was busy but not over crowded with a good range of people eating and others enjoying the atmosphere in the bar area, Bad bits first, We were greeted quickly and shown to our table in a perfect manner, drinks were ordered and delivered, and our food order was taken, this is where it took a turn for the worse, we ordered two starters and two mains, only the starters never arrived, and when the mains arrived we informed the waitress (who was different to the lady who took our order) and she said she would happily put a rush on the starters so as we could have them as a side with our main meal, however, this didnt happen, we reminded the waitress again when we saw her in passing and she appologized for original mistake and said she would check up on them, a further 15 mins pass and still no starters, at this point we had finished our main meals, and spoke to the manager. The managers response was perfect, the starters were removed from the bill, and we were offered (and indulged in) a free round of drinks and free desert. The food that we did get was Fantastic, FULL of flavour, and tasted better than I expected, full five stars, and I am happy to say that I will probably go back again because of this, next time, and im sorry if this is rude, maybe a more competent waitress. but as i said, cant fault the food or the way the situation was dealt with.
We went there as we had been told that they did very good steaks - and we were not misled ! I had rump steak with garlic snails and Roquefort and it arrived absolutely perfectly cooked. The service was good and friendly and we will definitely be going again.
We went there for my birthday and I would like to say that the filet beef we had was amazing, amazing taste and value. The atmosphere in this restaurant is good as well with a funny decoration, we really appreciate the time we had here. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who love meat.
Food was fantastic, steak cooked to perfection! They were great with the GF options, letting me know what I could and couldn't have! The rugby was on in the bar area that had a good crowd watching, but it didn't cause any interference with the restaurant or level of atmosphere. Highly recommended!
Beautiful steak. Friendly staff. Good value.
Visited for the first time on a Sunday early evening. We both ordered steaks cooked medium rare. Food arrived perfectly cooked. Highly recommended the triple cooked chips.
Really enjoyed it and the waiter we had was particularly good and helpful and really made the meal
I have visited the chequers several times for fabulous steak but this was a first for Sunday dinner. Beautiful meat, large portions and friendly staff. Will be heading back very soon!

The food was very average. The prawns that came with the surf and turf were an odd colour and the flesh was mushy! When we told the waiter he gave us a perplexed look and ordered a fresh portion of prawns that were the same mush. The chimmichuri sauce had clearly been kept in the little pot in the fridge for a while as it had a congealed lump in the middle, and no taste!
Excellent Saturday Night Steak
My wife, my best friend & his wife and myself went to Chequers as part of my extended 60th birthday . We all had a steak and it was superb. The service by our 2 waitresses was also excellent - on a par with the service you get in California which is superb. This is the second great meal I've had at Chequers and would go back there any time.
Sunday carvery at its best
Chequers without doubt serve the best Sunday lunch locally. We had a fantastic meal! Thank you!
Enjoyed all of steaks and the staff could not have been nicer. Thank you for a lovely birthday meal
Always an enjoyable evening.
The food and the service have always been at its best. Never had a problem with food and service. would recommend this to friends and family.

Best steak ever
Friendly staff, great food. Had the best steak ever!! Love this place!
A great Sunday lunch
We went for Sunday lunch, and it turned out to be one of the best roasts I've ever had! The roast beef was cooked to perfection. A big thumbs up from me, and that's from someone who hardly ever writes a review...
Sunday lunch heaven!
Never been here before but will definitely be going back. Awesome carvery, well cooked, great kids choices, modern surroundings and huge portions. On top of that, the high street is full of nice ships with a great Park for the kids by the river. Brilliant!
The steak here is superb. Never had a steak that good in the UK!!
Not a good experience
My friends and I go to the chequers quite a lot for food but sadly when we went on Tuesday for a friends birthday it was not the pleasant experience we had envisaged. After ordering our food we had a wait of nearly an hour for our food. While everyone else was getting their meals we were left waiting and when we asked how much longer our food would be we were told that because one of the steaks was medium to well it would take a bit longer - really! Eventually our food arrived two people were given the wrong steaks and one of the sauces was wrong which we had to ask for the right one. Myself and my friend had the ribs which were huge but sadly so dry we could not eat much of them. Nobody checked that everything was ok with our meals. Because of the errors and wait we were offered a complimentary drink. Sadly this has put us off going back to the chequers which is a shame as we did enjoy our evenings out there.
Not knowing the local restaurants, The Chequers stood out from the rest, and boy was this a good choice. Great setting, atmosphere and service. The food was outstanding. The steak topped with snails is definitely a must! Will most definitely return!!!
Fathers Day Family Meal for Five People
We have been eating here for many years as a family and the quality of food and the service is always exceptional! The staff are friendly and very professional tending to our every need and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
Enjoyed the evening very much, staff friendly and efficient and the food was very good.
A last minute choice for Sunday lunch. Very good!
My partner and I visited for Sunday lunch. The service was a tad slow considering it was not busy at the point we arrived, however, the food made up for that and we would certainly return again. The fillet steak was to die for, while my partner enjoyed the Sunday lunch.
Top marks to The Chequers
Great location in beautiful Marlow. The Fillet Mignon was cooked to perfection. Lovely atmosphere and excellent attentive waiter. I would definitely recommend.
The Chequers is a lovely restaurant and this was our first time back since it changed owners. Fortunately, their signature steaks are still on the menu and were extremely tasty, but, don't be fooled by their triple cooked chips, sadly they are just potato wedges, nothing like what you get at nearby Hand & Flowers. The hot chocolate honeycomb pudding was extremely enjoyable but probably could have been half the size as it was so rich. Overall though, an excellent meal in a great little venue.

Fantastic meal, finest steak you can eat and service to match,
Very nice as always.
We go to London twice a year and we always go back to the Chequers in Marlow. Great meat, great options and superb desserts. The service was very good, and the place is always very cool to have dinner with friends. The only negative point is that they have changed some of the desserts, as they don't have anymore the Chocolate fudge cake, and it was amazing. And the Banoffie Pie, now called Banoffe Pot, I think it was simply amazing as before, as a pie, even though is still very good now in the pot. Just a shame that is not anymore in the pie format. Regarding the sauces, they were a little bit liquid, even though they were very good. Fantastic meat choices.
The Chequers, Marlow, 16/05/2015
Party of 6 . We arrived 20 minutes early but our table was available so we sat down and ordered drinks and looked at the menu. Drinks arrived promptly. Food ordered: 3 starters for sharing: meat feast, baked camembert and bread bread and olives.. Wiped that out no problem. Mains: 4 ribeyes, 1 fillet and a Sirloin of varying sizes. ALL STEAKS WERE PERFECTLY COOKED as requested. No room for puds. The waiters were great and tipped accordingly. Total cost of the evening was £285.19 which included 10 drinks ( £47.7), Tip (£26.00), Starters (£32), Mains (£179.49). It is expensive compared to other places BUT if you get 6 out of 6 perfect steaks it's gotta be worth it. A great evening, thank you
Bring back the old Cherquers!!!
What a shame, The Chequers in Marlow did the best steaks...but what happened? Some of the greats from the menu are missing e.g. monkey gland sauce. The steaks were okay, but in the past were exceptional. The sides...not even close to how it used to be. It went from being one of the best restaurant in Marlow, the only place to go if you wanted a steak...to an ok restaurant. Why was a winning formula changed?
Excellent steaks - easily the best in Bucks!
Amazing steaks, always absolutely perfectly cooked. Very good vegetarian options too, all served in a really nice environment with efficient, polite staff - all in all a perfect night out.
the steak is the very best I've tasted, with the glaze on it that finishes it off being the finest.
best steak in town
very good steaks. Love the butchers block where you can pick and chose the best piece of beef.

Food excellent, steak really superb. We went on weekday lunchtime so not really able to judge on other criteria, but general impression was very good.
