A word from The Brasserie at Charing Cross
In the centre of London’s world famous West End, right on The Strand, is The Brasserie at Charing Cross, the main dining room of the Charing Cross Hotel. A grade II listed building filled with grand old Victorian character and gloriously regal features worthy of Queen Vic herself, the Charing Cross Hotel’s style is found in full force within The Brasserie and its accompanying lounge and cocktail bar, where contemporary style meets antique chic, decorated in an airy palette with luxurious deco-inspired furnishings, huge floor to ceiling windows and relaxed, sophisticated atmosphere. A fresh and seasonal menu with a mainly British flavour is The Brasserie at Charing Cross’s specialty, perfect for tourists seeking to sample our cuisine, for pre-theatre dining a stone’s throw from some of the world’s best stages or for a traditional afternoon tea enjoyed in the luscious surroundings of The Lounge. Eleanor’s Cocktail Bar is the perfect place for a digestif or a bottle of excellent wine. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Went there as a group and were nicely accommodated for lunch despite being more than 40 minutes late. Some of us had the set menu, which was offered to us although normally not available for lunch, and we were pleasantly rewarded with nice tasty food for a reasonable price. Nice Chilean wine complemented the menu and service was fast and friendly. View over Trafalgar square and nice atmosphere. Overall a nice place to eat conveniently located at the hotel next to Charing Cross station exit."

  • "Restaurant was excellent in every way, food was beautifully presented and flavours were superb. We used the brassiere for a pre show dinner, booked at 5pm which gave us ample time. Will definitely use again."

  • "Overpriced for mediocre food and very slow service"

  • "Very clean and comfortable surroundings, the service was attentive and with a smile. Food was on the small side but tasty, I would recomend and return."

  • "We came here before the theatre very short of time and our lovely waitress bent over backwards to accomodate this, ensuring we knew which dishes we could order for shorter preparation time and bringing the bill really quickly. Aside from this, it was a lovely restaurant, delicious pasta dish and very reasonable for the area. I will definitely be returning to enjoy the menu in more leisurely manner!"

  • "There are very few restaurants in London that take table bookings at 4.30 and this one did. This meant that the restaurant was not very busy at all and we dined in a very peaceful atmosphere. The service was excellent and the burger probably the best I have ever eaten. The dessert was heaven, a trifle that was served in a very modern way and absolutely delightful. Would I eat here again - any day."

  • "OK for pre theatre - ambience was lackluster but the food was nice, reasonable value for money."

  • "Clean smart suroundings, fairly quick freindly service, nice ambience not to noisy, food reasonable. Everyone in the party I was with enjoyed their food. It is everyday comfort food nothing special but menu will provide a small choice for almost everyone. Have been back to this restaurant many times over the years as it is consistent and reliable service. You could get a meal cheaper but this has qualities other quick eating places do not have therefore worth paying for that."

  • "Funny kinda place. Fantastic venue, service was a bit slow and the food was ok - good. It all felt a little flat as an experience."

  • "Went for pre-theatre lunch on the '3 course for £25' offer and was overall very satisfied. Great location, especially if you get a view across the river."

  • "Food was okay but service wasn't that great. Generally didn't meet up to my expectations but was a decent place for dinner. I did not feel like a valued diner."

  • "We went to the Brasserie at Charing Cross for reunion. The venue is unexpectedly relaxing and quiet and hard to imagine that there is such a place just above busy Charing Cross station. Food was good and we just enjoyed being there without any rush order or action from the restaurant side. The view from the restaurant to see Trafalgar Square was a plus factor."

  • "We visited the Brasserie at Charing Cross to celebrate a Birthday so were looking for somewhere a bit special. The restaurant delivered on this in atmosphere (it may have helped that it was Valentines day), the food was good (the passion fruit brulee was delicious) and great value for money especially when using the 3 courses and a glass of sparkling wine for £24.95 offer. We will definitely visit again."

  • "I took my boyfriend to this restaurant for a pre-theatre dinner on Valentine's Day and where as you know where you are with restaurants in and around Soho, I have to admit that I was slightly concerned how staff would react to a gay couple who are very much in love dining together....particularly as I suspected and was correct in the assumption that I would be receiving a bouquet of roses before the meal. I couldn't have been more wrong. Right from the very beginning we received nothing other than a warm welcome from the Maitre D' and all the staff who served us during the course of the meal. The ambience was charming and our menu a 3 course pre-theatre dinner plus a glass of sparkling wine fantastic value. Couldn't recommend this enough."

  • "The food was good at the following restaurant, but the service was really slow and if you are in a hurry this is not a restaurant to go to."

  • "This is the second time I have been to this restaurant and will be the last. First time service was bad but thought I'd give them second chance. Secon visit and service even worse. Waited ages to get service, staff rude and unfriendly and had to ask for drink and after 45 min wait, had to ask for starter. Real shame as food and restaurant is nice. Never again!!"

  • "Second visit. Service still needs to be sharper. Food very good though. And lovely surroundings."

  • "We were really disappointed with our meal, including my vegetarian son who went a la carte. Our vegetables were forgotten and arrived when we had virtually finished. Service was well meaning, but poor. Such a pity - felt like seaside boarding house standard ..."

  • "we had the £25 meal. The food was very tasty but not exceptional. Not sure why the fish and chips was in a wire basket which needed to be navigated! Service was rather ordinary - trays dropped on frequent occasions though thankfully they were empty! Water not topped up regularly and with tepid water that was sitting in a jug on the side. Took half an hour before the first course arrived and no bread or other nibbles on offer to plug the gap. All in all could have been more attentive. The setting was lovely though."

  • "Great value with reasonably priced wines in nice surroundings and friendly attentive service"

  • "We ate here on a cold Friday evening. Perhaps the snow kept other people away but the four of us were placed in the conservatory section which was practically empty and Boy! - was it cold. For starters we asked to share a smoked meat platter & got one better suited to two people: one tiny slice each of salmon, trout and duck. The main menu is basic - fish and chips, burgers and steaks make up a fair portion - but one friend had sea bass & lenjoyed it. Another ordered a medium-rare steak which arrived cold. Desserts were OK. Wine list & service OK but staff oblivious to the single diner two tables from us who sat listening to news on his iPad while he ate. They took 25% off the bill after we complained about the cold steak."

  • "I wanted to find a place with good food, plus plenty of room and an opportunity to talk with my family, one of whom was just back from Burma. We had to move the booking till a later slot, and were dealt with very politely. Service friendly and helpful, everything perfect except for one thing: the description of one of the courses on the special offer menu was, we thought, misleading: 'shoulder of lamb' was tasty but turned out to be more like hash. I have been here on many occasions, and find it an ideal place to meet and talk, whilst enjoying good, discreet service and spacious and mellow surroundings. It is extremely convenient, too, for public transport and taxis."

  • "I dined here post-theatre with my boyfriend and was a little disappointed. The food was tasty and the wine list was extensive and well priced; however the overall ambience was lacking. There was a large party in the room adjacent to the section of the restaurant displayed in the photo and they seem to have a far better time of it. The section we were seated in was largely empty and subdued as a result. The service was inattentive and at times we felt quite forgotten about, with a long wait between courses. Having read other reviews, we may have just caught them on a slow night. There are better options in the same area and I don't think we'll be returning again too soon."

  • "The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Even better they coped perfectly with our complex allergies. The ambience was wonderful - it's very plush - and the food was beautifully cooked. I had the shoulder of lamb and my wife had the calves liver. Both were amazingly tasty, although my wife knocked a couple of percentage points off for the "ordinary" mashed potatoes. The bar was well stocked: I discovered a rum that was new to me ("Mount Gay") which was more like a very smooth liqueur than rum. Overall, we were very pleased and satisfied. It was a great way to celebrate her "significant birthday". If we are ever in town again, we would certainly consider going back."

  • "Third visit to this restuarant on toptable offers and once again we weren't disapppointed. We had 2 Amercian guests with us this time - foodies and very knowledgeable on wine too - and they were seriously impressed with the whole experience. Wait staff are so helpful and cheerful at all times. Always eager to please."

  • "Appeared to be short staffed. Generally disappointed with the meal"

  • "Nice view on to The Strand but average food, that was served cold, and poor service."
    dined on 28/12/2012
  • "Our poor impression unfortunately stems right from the word go - we were 5 min late but were made by the front staff to feel like we were 2 hrs late, with his condescending stare & monotonous greeting voice. Whilst the interior decor was unquestionably lovely & rich in Xmas decorations, the staff all but one lacked warmth and smiles. The staff lacked the knowledge of a sommelier. Food was actually good - the liver parfait was a delight, and the beer battered fish and chips was one of the finest I've tried. The night was ended on a sour note though, whilst we waited @ the end of the meal for coffee/tea to be served, eventually we asked and one staff retorted "if you don't tell me how'd I know when you're ready." Frankly, outrageous manners."

  • "Very enjoyable pre-christmas, pre-theatre dinner venue. We ate from a brasserie style menu and enjoyed a very nice bottle of Pinot Grigio from a wide selection. Recommended, especially if staying in the hotel or heading to a show nearby."

  • "I went there for a 3 course for £25 offer. the starter and main are both good, but the desert was not as good."

  • "The food was very average and uninspired. The service was nervous. But the room itself and the hotel were beautiful and made the visit worthwhile."

  • "A surprising location within Charing Cross Station, great views out on to strand. We had the £24,95menu which had a great choice and the food was superb. The ambiance was very enjoyable and the restaurant was busy. This would have been an excellent rating however I was dining with friends who had a two year old, and the reaction of one waitress was very frosty at first, in contrast a second waitress went out of her way to help. Overall though a good evening."

  • "Another hotel restaurant with small cramped tables and rubbish service. Forget it."

  • "Lovely relaxed atmosphere, excellent service, well presented tasty food we dined for Sunday lunch & enjoyed the whole experience with the added extra of a good view."

  • "Went for pre theatre dinner, allowed two and a half hours, but waited so long for course's to arrive we only just had time for 2 course's, food tasted great, but was only warm, we didn't have time to send it back service was very poor, will try it one more time"
    dined on 15/12/2012
  • "Food was great, although our creme brulee's were not set and were very runny! We should have sent them back really. But that aside the food was delicious. The 3 course offer (£24.95 with a glass of bubbles) was very good value as it's such a grand place, but beware the cheapest bottle of prosecco was £40 after that! Downside is the service was pretty poor and quite disorganised. But would still recommend it for the offer as a beautiful setting especially with the Christmas decorations! Just beware of extra cost of booze!"
    dined on 13/12/2012
  • "The service was a bit hit and miss sadly. They got our order mixed up and my wine glass had a lipstick mark on it. Instead of changing it they poured it into a another glass. when i complained they did not speak English proficient enough to understand so i had to get an English speaking waiter, who was amazingly helpful. I did feel bad about the waitress whose English was bad but i also didn't want to drink dirty wine."

  • "I really enjoyed my evening at the Brasserie - the food is good and the set menu very good value with a good choice of food. The atmosphere is great too - relaxed but not noisy or crowded - just about right. The staff are friendly and attentive but not overly so - you can sit for as long as you like with no pressure to hurry or leave."

  • "We went for dinner thinking that we were going to get a very good meal and it turned out to be an average one."
    dined on 30/11/2012
  • "We had the 3 course top table offer with sparkling wine. Getting access to the dining room was bizarre - no-one on the desk and yet a woman on the parallel desk totally uninterested in the queue of diners waiting to go in. Finally we just walked in and asked for a table. Service was then prompt indeed a little brusque. The dining room is small and located in the conservatory-like room above the hotel's entrance. Quite nice but the seating is a little tired and the tables quite close together. The sparkling wine was average, there are better deals with a good Prosecco available but the food was delicious and well presented."
