Also the food is classically French which I have to admit though cooked very purely didn't seem to woo you. The Balcon is in the Sofitel pall mall and as I arrived early i waited in the hotel bar and ordered a white wine spritzer.
It cost £11.25. The bar is dark and cosy and an easy place to linger either before of after the meal. The service is warm, welcoming and attentive. The pumpkin spice cake with gingerbread mousse and salted caramel ice cream is reason to return. The rest of the meal (from the set menu) was good but not great. The food was excellent - in fact the best I've had in a restaurant for many years. I had lemon sole which was simple, not too large a portion and tasted delicious - excellent flavours. Followed this with one of their instant puddings- a passionfruit/rasberry white chocolate confection which again was fabulous. Other members of the family had chicken, mushroom tartlets and other puddings - all agreed that the food was first class.
The service was excellent - the right combination of attentiveness and friendliness but at no point did they intrude.
The total bill for 5 for two courses and drinks was £160.
