The ArchdukeGreat food, a bit quickHave eaten at the Archduke several times and whilst the service is very efficient, it may be too efficient. We were in, ordered, fed and out within 40 mins, so not ideal if you're after a leisurely meal!11/05/2013 00:00:00Good valueThis was good value and an excellent location for a pre-theatre meal, service was efficient, menu selection was good and the food was good.28/04/2013 00:00:00Good pre theatreExcellent service and lively atmosphere. Would definitely recommend for pre theatre26/04/2013 00:00:00Good food and good valueGreat pre-theatre menu for anyone heading off to the South bank. Nice ambience to the place too.23/04/2013 00:00:00Enjoyable experienceThis was the 2nd outing to the Archduke and as before we were happy with the quality and freshness of the food (and my husband is a difficult man to please foodwise - and he was very impressed). Service was good and we were able to have a pleasant relaxed meal, not hurried but not forgotten. Seating comfortable and nice ambience.05/04/2013 00:00:00good place to catch upgreat lunch to suit all tastes, comfortable ambience, with good service but not rushed. I'll be back!27/03/2013 00:00:00Great venue near National TheatreBusy buzzing restaurant opposite the National Theatre - ideal for a pre-theatre meal. The pre-theatre menu is great value with interesting choices, same for the a la carte, and the service is quick and friendly. We have been here many times and it is always busy which says it all!20/03/2013 00:00:00pre-theatre at The ArchdukeNeither my friend nor I had been to The Archduke for ages but it seemed the natural choice for a meal before going to The National. It was obviously doing good trade (it was a Saturday night) but it was early on and the noise levels hadn't reached unreasonable levels. We had the set 2-course meal: there was reasonable choice, a requested amendment to my first course was forthcoming, and the portions generous. The days of The Archduke being a cheap-ish wine bar are obviously long gone and we thought the wine prices a trifle steep but we chose an excellent wine by the glass (we were going to the theatre after all!) and our choice was endorsed by an obviously knowledgeable waitress. A long time between visits but we'll be back.09/03/2013 00:00:00Good food, music and great serviceIt is a friendly gastro pub, with nice jazz live music, very beautiful place and amazing service. We always have a great night there. This time, we took some friends with us, it was their first time there and they left really impressed and happy!09/03/2013 00:00:00Great lambMy friend had the steak but I went for the lamb which was fantastic and the potatoes were equally good. Even liked the sticky toffee pudding"06/03/2013 00:00:00Great option for pre-theatreBooked a table for two for a pre-theatre meal and had a positive experience. The set menu at £20 for 3 courses is incredibly good value. Service is (mostly) prompt. Choice of dishes is a bit limited but we were happy with the options provided.04/03/2013 00:00:00Handy for the National TheatreReally nice food in a busy, bustly space near Waterloo. Service a bit elusive at its busiest, but still had time for a couple of course before getting to the National Theatre for a 7:00 start!25/02/2013 00:00:00Went here on a Saturday lunchtimeWent here on a Saturday lunchtime pre Twickenham rugby and was very impressed. Lots of other rugby fans had the same idea! Food was great, set menu for lunch as well as the A La Carte and both had a great choice and the food was lovely. Will definitely be going back.23/02/2013 00:00:00Archduke...We had a great evening at the Archduke. The food was good, the service was paced well for out particular needs (a long social meal with family), but may have been a bit slow if you were in a rush (which we certainly were not). Reasonably prices got the quality of food provided. Our guests thoroughly enjoyed the evening and commented on our "good choice" of restaurant. So a very satisfied customer.16/02/2013 00:00:00Kiss Me Katei needed a restaurant near the Old Vic as we had booked to see the musical above and the Archduke seemed the place, we sat upstairs in the massive glass window area and people watched the goings on outside in the busy street ! - food very good - would be a great place in the evening as they have live music - lots of different seating areas inside - good friendly service - will go back again16/02/2013 00:00:00Consistently great steaks....I eat here regularly and the stands is always 5 star. Fantastic tasty tender steaks, interesting wine at a reasonable price, good unhurried service. Best steakhouse in the Waterloo area.12/02/2013 00:00:00Very enjoyable evening!Lovely atmosphere with live music, when I went there was a pianist there. Lovely building, great food and décor, I would definitely recommend.10/02/2013 00:00:00Friday night at the ArchdukeAn all round good experience: friendly welcome, efficient service, great cocktails, great food and good value for money. We'd go again any time.08/02/2013 00:00:00Enjoyable mealThe restaurant is split level, and on a Saturday night many people were downstairs just for drinks in the bar. If booking for dinner ask to sit upstairs. Service was good.
To eat we had: the garlic prawns - plump and juicy! The beef rib starter - a bit dry. For main courses: pan fried sea bream - excellent. Roast chicken - lovely with mustard sauce and a large portion.
Shared a cheese board afterwards, which was a bit unimaginative, and the cheddar had been left sitting out for a while.
Good wine selection. Meal was around £100 including drinks.
There was a live jazz singer on the mezzanine level but it was nice background music and not intrusive.
Would go again.02/02/2013 00:00:00Pre Theatre MealEnjoyed a pre theatre meal with my Wife and Father on a Thursday evening. We could not fault any part of our experience. The attention and service was excellent yet casual. The food is good value only let down by the lack of beer on tap and being too early for the live jazz.31/01/2013 00:00:00Lovely ambienceEnjoyed a pre theatre meal with my wife on a Saturday evening. We could not fault any part of our experience. The attention and service was excellent yet casual. The food represented good value being, very tasty, ample and well presented. The restaurant itself is on split levels but, with a view of most of it from almost every vantage point lending itself to a flowing ambience.
We will definitely visit again.18/01/2013 16:00:00Good quality Steak housePart of the Black and Blue chain, the steaks (fillet and rib-eye) where perfectly cooked (medium-rare) and served with tomato, mushroom and choice of sauce. The accompanying chips were very average however. Soup starter (Tomato and Basil) was a bit bland but the garlic prawns (served shell on but halved like lobster) were large and tasty. Our second visit so I can confirm this has consistently good quality steak. Perhaps a little overpriced but it's a well laid out space, in a good location especially for the Southbank, service was efficient and quick (so good for pre-theatre, booking advised). I'm not keen on meandering jazz piano but it's not too intrusive if you are upstairs.03/01/2013 16:00:00Great place for food pre SouthGreat place for food pre South Bank shows. Helpful and friendly service, food pretty good22/12/2012 16:00:00great night outThe evening we spent at the Archduke was fun. The atmosphere is the place was great, the live music added to the. Whole feel. The food was great - simple but really tasty and the service was excellent.19/12/2012 16:00:00bryan's reviewGreat venue. Food was really good. Value very good.Too noisy to hear what was clearly good music.14/12/2012 16:00:00Pre matinee lunch at the Arch DukeMy daughter and I required a light lunch before going to a matinee at the National theatre. We had pleasant seats at the Archduke and we were not kept waiting to order, to eat or to receive the bill. We had an excellent light lunch, crayfish and avacado followedo by coffee and crossed the road to the National in plenty of time. We would certainly go to the Archduke again.14/12/2012 16:00:00Great place for a steakThe place was busy downstairs but civilised upstairs in the restaurant and we got in just before a large Xmas group which meant the service was quick. We all had steaks of some sort and they were all cooked perfectly to order. Note, however, that if you order the 600gm steak it is meant to be shared for 2 so you get 2 portions of chips and sides ... yum yum09/12/2012 16:00:00yet againIt is always difficult to find anything to say about the Archduke that one has not said before. The standards are invariably very high. If there is a slight niggle it is that the old Hoffnung cartoons of orchestral players are no longer on the walls. The new furniture and layout are very good.26/10/2012 00:00:00The Archduke experienceWe had an early evening meal at the Archduke at Waterloo and had a really very good experience. The food, wine, atmosphere, service, facilities were all rather good. We felt welcomed and relaxed and would certainly come again. Highly recommended by both us.04/09/2012 16:00:00very good value pre-theatre foodThe Archduke is our favourite venue on the Southbank and we always have a very good meal there, very efficiently served in time for the theatre. we had the smoked salmon, followed by the baked cod, the latter was particularly delicious. Our only quibble is that the small glasses of wine are a little overpriced.23/08/2012 00:00:00a reliable pre-theatre restaurantThe Archduke always pleases with the quality of the food and efficient service, though we would like to see the set menu changed more frequently. Can thoroughly recommend the seafood risotto, tartlets and terrine. They will do small glasses of wine even though prices for them are not mentioned on the winelist.20/06/2012 00:00:00Had heard good things aboutHad heard good things about the food and was not disappointed. Excellent service, our waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable about the wines. Very tasty steaks and delicious brownie. Recommended17/05/2012 00:00:00As usual, the Archduke wasAs usual, the Archduke was a very convenient place to eat before going to the National Theatre. I enjoyed the sea trout and risotto, my friend liked her lamb, we both found the apple pie and cream delicious. As I've said before, the menu should contain the prices of small glasses of wine, which the restaurant does indeed serve. Our other criticism is that it became very noisy, possibly because of the piano player, but also because of the large group eating nearby. Service very efficient.14/05/2012 00:00:00ARchduke was as usual reliableARchduke was as usual reliable but this time menu choice was a bit uninspiring. Salmon terrine was a disappointment, savoury tart was good however. Mains were fine and substantial. the Loire white was underwhelming and it would be good to have the choice of smaller glasses. Still one of the best places for South Bank pre theatre02/05/2012 16:00:00Always lively and in a greatAlways lively and in a great location, the Archdukes, by Waterloo station was as good as always last night. Service was prompt, efficient and pleasant and the food was lovely. You can get burgers cooked rare which shows they make their own and mine was juicy and delicious!02/05/2012 16:00:00We dined at The Archduke onWe dined at The Archduke on the Southbank before going to the National Theatre. We both had the pretheatre menu which was fine, and reasonably priced. The service is efficient which is important when you're going to a concert or play. The salmon starter was a bit salty, otherwise we enjoyed our meal.13/04/2012 00:00:00The Archduke on the SouthThe Archduke on the South bank is as reliable as ever for a pre-theatre meal. The service is efficient, and the food good and reasonably priced. We enjoyed the seafood brochette - the fish was cooked to perfection, and the puddings: chocolate brownie and apple pie. I would have liked more green vegetables with my main course and I do think that they should list prices for a small glass of wine on their menu, but apart from that I have no criticism.04/03/2012 16:00:00Pleasant meal as ever at thePleasant meal as ever at the Archduke - perfect for pre-theatre. reasonable choice on fixed price menu. service efficient and friendly. smoked salmon and pork belly both good and seafood grill very good. Brownie for dessert was a bit disappointing - not very chocolatey.22/02/2012 16:00:00Archduke at South Bank wasArchduke at South Bank was very conveniently situated for the National and were obviously experienced at quick pre theatre meals .Excellent service and good food .Would definately go again .26/01/2012 16:00:00
