Diner Reviews
  • "On arrival at 6pm, with no other guests, we were shown to a small table in the bowels of the restaurant. After a little discussion we were offered alternative seating. The menu offerings read wonderfully and the reality was perfectly cooked, presented and superbly spiced. The flavours were excellent. However we did have an increasing sense of being rushed along; that was underlined when we were served a complimentary granita and literally 3 seconds later our desserts were served. Still we went for the food and that was excellent !!"

  • "We were rather underwhelmed by the decor at this converted pub, but the welcome was warm and friendly. The menu is refreshing and flavours interesting and not too extensive; always a good sign. We arrived just ahead of a large group so delivery of our food was a bit slow but well worth the wait. Sadly we didn't have time to test the dessert selection which sound delicious...a reason to return."

  • "The Ambrette is as good as its reviews suggest. The restaurant is widely acclaimed in all the top food guides and it's a tight squeeze getting in past all the awards. Service is efficient, warm and knowledge. The cooking of mostly prime local ingredients with a subtle South Indian twist is truly outstanding."

  • "Really lovely food, attentive service, more expensive than most but perfect for that special occasion. Do have special offers on at the moment."

  • "The moment you walk into the restaurant you feel special. The greeting is warm and friendly. The staff are attentive but give you time to make your choices. The food was superb and the staff knowledgeable about the food on the plate. Overall it was a wonderful experience."

  • "We had lunch here on Sunday, and although the service was very slow initially (staff were late due to the clock change), it improved greatly later in the meal. The food could not be faulted: such interesting and successful flavour combinations, and perfectly cooked fresh meat/fish. The decor could have done with an update, but the lunch menu prices were very good considering the high standard of cuisine."

  • "I booked into The Ambrette for the set lunch on a Saturday with my parents and we all loved it. The service was excellent and there were some little extras alongside the set lunch which were unexpected and a nice touch - a welcome drink, a potato fritter to nibble on and an intermediate little cup of creamy soup. The food was very tasty and we all cleared the plate of every course. Whilst every course was amazing I think the highlight were the desserts which in some restaurants can be an after thought but NOT here - yummy. The lemon posset was voted favourite. We will definitely visit again and soon! Great value and lovely food across all courses. A rare find."

  • "Saturday was our anniversary, so where else would we go? The food was as good as ever, as was the service. Free glass of sparkling wine was the icing on the cake!"

  • "My husband and I had a superb meal thanks to Dev and his team at the Ambrette. The service from all of the team was outstanding and made us feel as though we were the most important people in the restaurant.... However they did that for everyone that stepped foot in through the door. The food was absolutely wonderful and we were told exactly what was on our plate when it was served. The source of the food was explained on the menu and most seemed to be local."

  • "We've been going to the Ambrette since they opened and never had a bad meal. The portions are on the small side but just right at lunchtime. Service staff are very well trained and considerate especially when taking elderly guests."

  • "We live locally and have visited the Ambrette many times. It never disappoints. The food is always carefully prepared, beautifully presented and delicious. This time we took advantage of a special offer which ensured that, even on a Monday evening in March, the dining room was busy. One of the great things about The Ambrette is that it uses local ingredients wherever possible and also adds in unusual touches, such as sea purslane. The menu also changes regularly according the season. Great restaurant, attentive staff without being overbearing and excellent food."

  • "Attentive service, faultless food!! Each dish was cooked to perfection with an explosion on flavours with each bite! This restaurant well deserves a visit from the people at Michelin! They deserve a star!!"

  • "This little eatery is fantastic. From the friendly staff that give you just the right level of attention without smothering you, to the exquisite food, which is presented superbly on each plate. The prices are high for the area, but not unexpectedly so, considering the level of service, and quality of food and drink available."

  • "As always, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to The Ambrette, The food is incredible, the staff polite and attentive and it is the perfect place for any occassion"

  • "This is not our first visit to The Ambrette, and we once again had a very enjoyable evening. The food as always is well presented and absolutly delicious. The onion dumplings we received as a pre starter were amazing, so tasty and we could have ate more of them - maybe as a starter. I had the venison, which was tender and delicately spiced, my husband had the mutton which was also very tender and delicately spiced. We had courgettes as a side dish and we thought they could have been cooked a little bit more. The food served at The Ambrette is of such good quality and not the normal 'run of the mill' indian, that it makes you want to keep going back to try the different dishes. Thank you to all the staff who made our evening very pleasant."

  • "The Ambrette in Margate is a pleasant surprise. Highly spiced but delicate Eastern cuisine, mainly regional Indian. Wonderful amuses including a sensational bayleaf and yoghurt hot soup. Lovely naan. Excellent sea beet and purslane, both local. Wine list rather pricey but a very good Biddenden Dornfelder from Kent that matched all the food - £19.95. There is an over 60s lunch loyalty card "Privilege" that makes the £19.95 lunch £10.95 - another enlightened surprise. Lovely service with a smile."

  • "Margate is reinventing itself, it used to be a horrible destination full of kiss me quick hats and bank holiday drunks. Now there is the Turner gallery, the old town and the Ambrette. Thanet's restaurant of the year serves wonderful food has great service reasonable prices and a wonderful ambience, if that's not a reason to visit I don't know what is we always go while in the area and have even driven down from London for the tasting menu. GO!!!! They deserve support."

  • "Back to the Ambrette yet again and things were as great as ever. Add this restaurant to your "bucket list" - you must eat here before you die :-)"

  • "This is a restaurant so different from the run of the mill that it is a real pleasure to take people for their first visit and see their surprise and enjoyment. We were there at 2pm on a Thursday lunchtime - it was full with more tables arriving at 2.30. The food is exquisite. We have never had a disappointing experience."

  • "Exotic flavours and spices with a western twist. Hubbie and I stayed at the Walpole Hotel for the weekend and ate here as a treat, and it certainly was. Have recommended to friends who live locally, and will certainly look forward to going again."

  • "We have eaten at the Ambrette restaurant many times and each time we have had an excellent meal. We have taken lots of friends and family and everyone has been really impressed and always want to return. It is our favorite restaurant. They deserve all the awards that they have received."

  • "Fantastic value even without a "privilege" card which gives a lower cost fixed price meal. £54 including service, drinks and a couple of side dishes in a three course meal - for three. You could call it modern British food but spiced and aromatic, not hot from too much chilli. Restaurant was full though a Monday lunchtime with almost everyone of a certain age, consequently service from two waiters was slower than ideal but not really a problem."

  • "Celebrated our wedding anniversary here. Absolutely delicious food. Top quality device. Loved it."

  • "Wasn't sure what to expect but had a great night. Quirky and interesting menu. Dishes were flavourful and balanced. Appreciated the surprise taster dishes and palate-cleansers. Staff polite and courteous. Waited a bit long for the dishes, but well worth the wait. Prices half of what they would be in London."

  • "We visited The Ambrette due to the rave reviews, and we were not disappointed! The staff were excellent - friendly, attentive, helpful and knowledgeable. Everything that was put on our table was narrated by the waiter - which was great as you often forget the accompaniments. The food was amazing, and totally lived up to the high standards. We opted for Crab and Chicken to start, both were fantastic. Followed by Mutton and Fish of the day - which I had and can highly recommend! With restaurants which have such high standards you can often leave feeling unsatisfied, however this was not the case - we were served tasters/pallet cleansers between each course as well which was a superb touch. I cannot recommend The Ambrette highly enough!"

  • "Eating Indian food with a twist. Ingredients locally sourced and high quality. All food well presented by waiters who describe the dish, ingredients and style of cooking. Highly recommended. An unexpected delight in a run down English seaside town that is working hard to redefine itself. The old town is adjacent to the restaurant and is well worth a post dinner stroll. Some very good tasting menu offers to whet your appetite if you go on to their web site."
