A word from Steam and Rye

Steam and Rye, a late night Americana themed bar and restaurant, situated in the heart of the City opened to critical acclaim in November 2013. The menu features classic American crab-shack cuisine including USDA Grain-fed beef from Greater Omaha, BBQ spare ribs & tender, beautifully flavoured steaks cooked on the Josper Grill. Additionally, favourites such as crab cake, Lobster by the pound, and Smoked Pulled Pork, have attracted diners from far and wide.
The food is all prepared fresh on site, by a team led by celebrated chef Andrew McLeish (of Michelin starred Chapter One, Kent).
The 70 capacity restaurant is open for lunch and dinner on weekdays and for dinner from 6pm on Saturdays. All you can eat Ribs&Shrimp every Monday&Tuesday!!

Diner Reviews
  • "I like the concept and I expect this is a good party place for after work. Food is definitely not worth the price. Don't bother eating, just drink."
    dined on 14/04/2014
  • "We went here for lunch. Waited for over an hour for food to turn up and we were told it would be there shortly. It didnt ever turn up and all other tables around us had been served and were eating! We then left without lunch and had to go and buy a sandwich! Worst lunch experience ever."
    dined on 15/04/2014
  • "We walked out after 90 minutes as we hadn't received our food. I have never left a restaurant before for that reason and we weren't the only table to do so. We didn't even receive the bread that we asked for whilst we were waiting! Please do not waste your lunchtime by going there and certainly do not take brokers/underwriters/clients.."

  • "Food was very poor, I had squied tempura and it was greasy and heavy. I found the food to be overpriced for what it was."

  • "Thursday night the venue is packed to the rafters of young, rowdy drinkers not the atmosphere I chose to eat in had I known this before we went I wouldn't have booked. Every 10 minutes someone is ordering a round of drinks that require special fanfare of music and a troop of staff carrying it over in a shark or alligator head, amusing the first two times then you're pretty much over it. There may have been more of a restaurant upstairs, we never looked but the seating arrangement they have in the main room is like a side thought, just a bar with food. Having said this the food was really lovely and fairly priced and the staff pleasant and attentive. Over all Id only come back to eat ... but I don't like to eat in this environment aargh!"

  • "We had been enticed by the website and appeal of something a bit different. The venue was smaller than we had imagined, it was very noisy and the general bar area encroaches onto the dining area - especially as we were then on a Friday evening. It was very busy, and it took a while after our booked time to get us to a table. However, the service was excellent and the staff were very very courteous and friendly. The cocktails were great (but pricey) with great themes to them - lots of fun. The food was middling though."

  • "Loved Steam and Rye cocktails and food. Cocktails worth the money as they were really strong but tasted good. Was not happy we was put on a table that was roped off rather than in the restaurant area. Was catching up with 2 other friends and we could hardly hear each other speak. As our table was roped off from the main drinking area. We had to ask a group of really drunk men to stop leaning over the rope and practically standing on top of us whilst eating. I would like to visit Steam and Rye again and ask to be seated in the booth area's up the back."

  • "Staff were rude, service was awful. We where watched like hawks which made us uncomfortable. Our server dropped my friends drink all over the table and did not even apologise, clean it up nor offer to replace her cocktail which was now half full!! We refused to pay service change for all these reasons, the second we had finished eating we were pounced on and asked if we wanted more drinks and was basically told if not we were to leave!! My lobster roll tasted very fishy and like prawn which indicates it was not fresh ... Was it worth 13 or so £ .... No!"
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "Great all you can eat ribs, food was good, service was a little slow. quite expensive but will definitely go again."
    dined on 25/03/2014
  • "I had high expectations for this restaurant but I found it very disappointing. We were first of all led up to the upstairs dining room which is quite and you are unable to watch the shows that they put on downstairs. I requested to be moved down and the manager kindly did so. The service was good and attentive, yet the whole restaurant just seemed random, they layout etc. The shows didn't last long and the band packed up at c.10:30pm and the atmosphere was not that great. I did go on a saturday evening and expected a lot more - maybe it's more lively on a weekday? We eventually left looking to go somewhere with a bit more atmosphere. The food was OK, I wouldn't go back for the food however, the cocktails were delicious!"

  • "This was my second time (on a wednesday rather than a thursday). The food is still great and the cocktails are still entertaining, but there were no dancing girls (only on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. I think this information should be on their website). On the flip side, they still had live music, but it was a little quieter, enough that we could all talk at the table more easily. On this particular occasion i preferred that... its still like eating in a nightclub though, with the smoke machine going off. Apparently there is a more civilised area downstairs, but then if you want civilised go to B%deans zzz. Overall, its still a great with a group of friends.....just not on a date (as some poor people have decided to do)"
    dined on 19/03/2014
  • "Went on a Monday night to try out their unlimited BBQ ribs offer but found the service to be slow and the food to be too salty and the sauce overpowering. The service, although friendly, was quite slow (and as it was a Monday night, it wasn't that busy). Would go again for drinks only (they have a good range of gimmicky cocktails!)"
    dined on 24/02/2014
  • "The cocktails at steam and rye where up their with the best in London! Not only because of the great taste but also because of the quirky glasses and toppings that made each cocktail unique. I would recommend the Mississippi cocktail that comes on fire. The decor was beautiful, decked out to imitate new yorks grand central station, including train carriages and tv screens of scenery. We dined on a Saturday at 7.30pm and it had some empty tables. The tables where next to the bar area which had groups of people just drinking - I would recommend this experience. The live band was amazing and made our night. The food let it down - e.g burnt bun on the burger and we were told half the menu was out of stock. Expected more for the price."
    dined on 08/03/2014
  • "Sticky glasses, carpeted floors and drinkers on high tables standing over diners. American diner with very expensive food & drink, noisy and uncomfortable. Friendly Irish waitress. Probably good for meeting people late evening if that's what you're after. Live music starts early at 8pm. Not somewhere to go for an intimate dinner for two!"
    dined on 11/03/2014
  • "Went there on a Monday afternoon. The restaurant was reasonably busy but there was capacity for a lot more people. There were a lot of staff, who seemed reasonably attentive. Food was excellent and the ambiance was good. Very pleasant for a reasonably nice lunch. Not too much to moan about."
    dined on 10/03/2014
  • "The crab cake turned up cold and was returned for a fresh hot one. Both were full of shell. We were not charged for this item. The ribs were very fatty. It was very noisy (though I had read the reviews so knew to expect this and it was a Friday night - 6pm), the lighting was very red, the seating was very uncomfortable when eating a meal. The seats are low and are more for drinking than eating, the toilets were in a state. I have nothing positive to say about this place except the service was good. Perhaps I am too old (forties not twenties). It just wasn't for me. It was very busy so it seems to be pleasing some people."
    dined on 07/03/2014
  • "After having an amazing evening a few weeks ago I returned to be so disappointed I won't return. The service was beyond appalling."
    dined on 04/03/2014
  • "I booked a table for 8pm on a Friday night. Upon arrival I nearly walked away without even going through the doors, it is basically a nightclub at this time and wasn't sure what I was getting myself and my guests into. Nonetheless we gave it a go as we thought worst case we could get a drink and leave fairly quickly. Well we were glad we took this decision because we had the steak which was of a very good standard and gives the other City based steak houses a run for their money (Goodmans/Hawksmoor etc.) for much cheaper. We were positioned in a nice booth away from the bar. If you are looking for a quiet sophisticated night for good conversation this is not for you as shouting at each other over the table was par for this course."
    dined on 28/02/2014
  • "Had a great time here, live music Was great! However, it did take over 30 minutes for someone to come and take our first drinks order! Rest of the service was good! Drinks were great fun!"
    dined on 28/02/2014
  • "The old Prism reinvented by a group including Kelly Brooke. Sadly she wasnt there when we dined but a nice change to the staid clinical white table cloths of before. The Grand Central Station look is different as well as the pop up menus which take me back to my childhood. A good range of bottled beers and wines are accompanied by a list of cocktails long enough to to reach platform 8. Food very nicely served with a swift and effective service. A little pricy for what it is but you wont be going every day. The evenings have a seperate reputation already!"
    dined on 26/02/2014
  • "was really impressed with the food at steam and rye. Also like the decor, its a tranformation from the last place which had a much more serious feel. will definitely return."
    dined on 26/02/2014
  • "good all round. went for lunch on a Tuesday and had the all you can eat Ribs. great value although BBQ sauce was over powering. would go again for a lunch bite"
    dined on 25/02/2014
  • "We went for a small dinner to celebrate my friends 35th, food was ok but wow what a service. We started by being told our table won’t be ready for another 5 mins, which is fine but were brought to the table to watch them arrange. We then sat down with no drinks menu, had to wait & once we got it we had to wait again to ask what beers were even available. The birthday boy ordered the lobster brioche roll & when it arrived, it was just a lobster brioche roll on a wooden board with nothing else, our waitress said the fries would follow. By the time the fries came, the roll was finished. Shocked at this, we decided to pay & leave & forget about dessert for the birthday! A fun concept, ok food & destroyed by horrendous service & execution."
    dined on 24/02/2014
  • "My boyfriend and I visited Steam and Rye on a Friday night with his best friend and his girlfriend with high expectations. Unfortunately these were nowhere near met. Sat on a table on the dancefloor, surrounded by hundreds of drunken city workers, in a haze of dry ice trying to shout over a ridiculously loud band we found ourselves. Despite the good food and fabulous cocktails we spent our night trying to shout over the top of a cover band, clearing empties off of our dinner table whilst we were eating, being hit in the face with a backpack, having beer poured over us and broken glass at our showering our feet. Out of the 3 ladies toilets, one was without a toilet seat and the other two were blocked. Such a shame as it could be so good!"
    dined on 21/02/2014
  • "Very fun lively place. Lots going on and the cocktails are very quirky and fun. Adds that little but extra to a night out. Very loud! Not easy to have a conversation at your table and the layout of the room is a bit odd as it feels like your eating in a bar rather then restaurant. But my group enjoyed the night out!"
    dined on 22/02/2014
  • "Didn't think much of the venue, but the food was very tasty"
    dined on 19/02/2014
  • "Really great restaurant, super cool decor, very trendy. Food was delicious, great burgers!"
    dined on 11/02/2014
  • "On entering the venue it looked very smart, the table we were given was not very good, chairs are more for relaxing not for eating, I did ask to be changed to a booth and I was told no first of all but then a cancellation came up and we were very kindly moved, the only problem was we ordered two fillet steaks and one hanger steak and when the steaks arrived I queried them as we had received one fillet and 2 hangers. Manager who checked them disagreed with me at the time, seeing as the fillet steak is £32 each we were quite disappointed as I know there is never any fat on fillet steak, , I mentioned this again and the manager very kindly took the two 'fillet steaks' off our bill. We never complain but felt had to on this occasion."
    dined on 15/02/2014
  • "The décor is fabulous. Value is good on the nights they have a deal on - otherwise v expensive."
    dined on 10/02/2014
  • "Nice venue but it was like dining in a nightclub! Our table was on the dancefloor, the only thing seperating us from the drunken city bankers and essex girls were our seats! Music extremely loud, couldn't have a conversation at all! My lobster was under cooked and small, no cracker to crack the claws and no fingerbowls. Best to go to burger and lobster if you want lobster! Mates food was good though. We were entertained by a live band who were great, but again so loud! Men would love it here, as they have scantily clad women who walk through the dancefloor and onto the stage to show us a dance . Would I come here for dinner again? Probably not, but maybe when I'm drunk and fancy a night of cheesy dancing, I might go back?!"
    dined on 07/02/2014
  • "After being seated at our table we waited 20 mins for it took it 19 mins to ask if we required any drinks, in that time we all had decided that it was to loud and would leave, did this through sign!"
    dined on 06/02/2014
  • "Had a great evening at Steam & Rye on Saturday. My friend and i ate there early eve - really good American burger food - the pulled pork was awesome! Decent portions at pretty decent prices. Staff were brilliant, really chatty, fun and attentive. Good live band. My only moan was that the seats were too low for the tables!! Great cocktail bar downstairs."
    dined on 01/02/2014
  • "Second visit to Steam & Rye, largely because the smoked bbq ribs were fantastic first time round. Went at lunchtime only to be told they werent doing the shrimp or the ribs and they're only for evenings, despite no mention on the menu; and they were served at lunchtime previously. Given the 1kg rib 2 person option instead and really just wasnt upto same standard. Cocktails are good and burger was fine but unless you find an offer, its generally overpriced. Good atmosphere and if they sort out the menu availability I would go back."
    dined on 28/01/2014
  • "I booked a table of 8 for my boyfriends birthday - mostly drawn in because of the all-you-can-eat ribs and shrimp as I knew he'd love it. The decor is impressive - but you do get the feel that's it more of a bar/club than a restaurant. It was a bit loud for us to all talk as a group. There were a lot of suits in there, as you would expect from the area it is located. The staff were great and quick. The food was delicious and we had 9 extra serves of ribs and 7 of the shrimp...they weren't lying about the A.Y.C.E. aspect!! All in all a good experience and good value for money, but not sure I'd hurry to go back."
    dined on 28/01/2014
  • "Went on the '50% off for lunch' deal for the first time. Menu is just the right size with a variety of meat and sea food. Portions were massive, I have the 350g rump steak and my friend had the rib. Both were cooked to perfection. Not sure I could justify £27 and £19 without any discount though, but platters at £49 for 5-6 and the quirky decorations and lovely ambiance mean I would consider it for a group gathering. Great service."
    dined on 27/01/2014
  • "A great place to celebrate a special occasion with a range of quirky cocktails that are served in style. Live entertainment, fire breathing bar staff and dancing gogo girls in sparkly US leotards adds the extra glitz to the evening"
    dined on 25/01/2014
  • "The food was fair but the chicken was slightly undercooked, order the steak, that looked excellent. We were charged for 2 drinks that I think were ordered on the table next to ours, adding £15 to our bill that we didn't notice until the next day. We booked the last toptable slot (17:45). This time is too late really because the bar is full of revelers and the revelers are right up against the tables, so be prepared to have your elbow jostled when eating in the row of tables closest to the bar. The music is loud and talk over dinner will be difficult. The place busy and the staff are working non stop like a well oiled machine, service was excellent most of the time. The vibe is very good if you are looking to enjoy yourself after dinner."
    dined on 24/01/2014
  • "We had to wait 40mins for food and asked twice before we got it. Once it came it was lovely but I didn't have time to finish it as I was over my hour lunch break and had an important deadline at work to meet so no way could I stay which we explained this but they didn't care about and no offer of taking it away which was over half a burger left and bit of lobster. Just wish I could try again knowing this isn't going to happen. Told the manager about the slow service might as well not waste our breathe. They need to improve on customer service if they want to survive in the city as the restaurant wasn't even half full with a good offer on."
    dined on 24/01/2014
  • "To begin with they manage to get our table ready an hour before our slotted time. Bonus. We went to see live music and eat some American grill. While we were seated, The appeared to be more of back ground music. It gave a feeling of being at a conference (why bother booking a band). Waitress can over and was helpful and very pleasant, made us feel really welcome. Order basic American food and as the band finished the DJ blasts out normal tunes to which couldn't hear each other, then getting drunk customers from the bar area seating on our laps not respecting that we are eating ruined the evening. And the managers lack of compassion, what poor customer service. Advice is not to eat their in the evening."
    dined on 23/01/2014
  • "I really really wanted to like this place and maybe I am biased because I am American, but Steam and Rye's attempt at "Americaness" is cheesy at best. The drinks were extremely sugary and not very good at all and the food was of cheap quality. It was so loud in there that my boyfriend and I didn't speak at all during our dinner. Service was very good. I would not come here again nor would I recommend it to anyone."
