A word from Sen Nin Japanese Teppanyaki & Sushi Restaurant - Islington
Sen Nin is a contemporary Japanese Teppanyaki, Robatayaki and Oriental Restaurant in the heart of Islington. Being Islington's first and oldest Japanese Restaurant, Sen Nin has recently undergone a full refurbishment featuring a centrally located Teppanyaki (Hibachi Grill), Robata (Japanese BBQ). Sushi Counter and Wok Station. So you can now see the Chefs prepare all the dishes in full view of all diners. Fresh sushi is prepared and you can watch the fresh meat, seafood and vegetables cooked on the Teppanyaki or Robatayaki. They also have a full range of contemporary Oriental favourites such as Thai Green Curry or the Lobster red curry. Chilled or hot sake is a must on the side, or you can choose from their range of Japanese inspired cocktails made from Premium Spirits. Sushi, sashimi and tempura are also on offer, along with home made desserts which are well-worth saving room for. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "this is not a traditional Japanese restaurant, it is very trendy, very clean and very nice . we were very impressed of recommended dishes (Lamb and Prawn Curry along with Salmon terriyaki) and also ordered for some starters. Our Waiter was lovely. Really made us feel welcome and had a really lovely conversation with him (lately found out he's the manager). for our orders we didn't have to wait very long. The presentation of food and drink were beautiful and I liked how Samurai Lake cocktail presented, which was also very balanced cocktail in mouth. The food and drinks were superb and beautiful flavours. All in all an absolutely fantastic experience and worth the money. You have definitely gained three new customers whenever we are in angel."

  • "It was an amazing evening at Sen-nin. Specially thanks to all brilliant and friendly team. Sushi was simply delicious, great decoration and fresh. Salmon Teppanyaki with plum teriyaki sauce is best. Overall good food, brilliant service and great experience. Thanks we will be back."

  • "I was looking forward to having dinner at this restaurant with 2 of my very good friends. We all love sushi and Japanese Teppanyaki and was hoping that the food would be good. Much to my surprise, the food was beyond awful. The sushi was ok, but I have had better, and the Teppanyaki tasted like very bad Chinese leftovers! We ordered chicken wings - very under-cooked and tasted awful; Prawns - were OK, but we were only given 4 on a stick; Calamari - didn't taste like calamari and it looked more like white pasta strings. The rice and noodles were very plain and greasy! We paid over £70 for a few dishes and were left starving! This has been a truly awful experience. Never again!"

  • "We were lured in by the restaurant website's extravagant description, exciting pictures and extensive menu, only to arrive in extreme disappointment. We had hoped for a Teppanyaki experience on Mother's Day. However, all they could offer was a limited 2 page menu and sushi buffet. The waiter was reluctant to talk to us and seemed to be conferring with his manager. When he finally came to the table, he told us the website hadn't been updated and they recently changed the menu and Sundays were limited. Neither of these were stated on the website. The food didn't even smell appetising. The vibe of the restaurant was so boring and the food choice so scarce we were forced to leave and go elsewhere."

  • "Very impressed with Sen Nin. Service was good, lots of choice on the menu and really big portions. Sushi was really good and excellent value with 50% off offer. My only complaint was my spare ribs were over cooked and a bit tough but all the other dishes made up for it. Drinks are really expensive though. Would definitely recommend and plan to go back there very soon if only for the sushi!"

  • "The food was great - no complaints, and good value with the discount. The service wasn't great though, not bad but they did seem to forget us as everyone seemed to be trying to do everything, rather than having a dedicated waiter/waitress. But overall great, I would definately go back, and the staff were really friendly!"

  • "Eaten here a few times now and the food has always been first rate. The service can be a little slow when they're busy but if you're relaxed enough to be out for the evening and in no real rush it's the perfect setting. Great value for the heart of Islington"

  • "I ate at this place last year & it was great; tasty food, good value & entertainment from the chef who cooked in front of you on the hot plate. SO disappointed on returning after the refurb. It would seem there are new owners in there, or if there aren't then they've made changes that aren't for the better. There are no longer the hot plates for chefs to cook in front of you, this was not a real problem, however, the food is now served in smaller portions and is no where near as tasty. The prices have also gone up, so you're basically paying more, for less. I can often overlook this if the food is delicious, it wasn't. The food was served up barely warm and on big plates but spread out to look like more. Sadly, I won't be going back there."

  • "Very kind and attentive waitress. Food was good but not exceptional - is good value with 50% off discount"

  • "Very nice venue with an awesome selection of both cooked and raw dishes. 50% off from Toptable made it excellent value."

  • "A small group of us went and ordered some dishes to share on "Super Tuesday" where everything was half price. The food was very tasty, the service was very quick, and because of the discount it was reasonably priced. I don't think I would have gone if it was full price."

  • "They've stopped doing the show part of the evening which was what I took my girlfriend there for which was a great disappointment. The food tasted great but we were the only people in the restaurant on a monday evening which led to great service but no atmosphere within"

  • "What can you say about this place other then it being a hidden gem. We had a Amazon local voucher for the most expensive set menu. We were a bit apprehensive about some of the exotic ingredients but our waitress put our worries to ease as we could have things swapped around. The highlight of the evening for me was the huge maki roll (should be called maxi roll) and the succulent lobster. My partner had the blackened cod which just melted in our mouths. All washed down with huge sake margaritas. Hope this place does not change as its a real find"

  • "was ok,, a bit pricy although the food (sashimi and nigiri) tasted very good. Just made quickly. Good service, friendly staff. Ambiance good despite it was an empty and quiet Thursday night."

  • "So I read the reviews and have lived in the area for some time but never visited. I've opened and reviewed many restaurants so I was a bit suspicious and intrigued by the 50% off your food deal with Top table. I went in a party of 2 and we sat on the banquette opposite the Teriyaki Gallery ( open kitchen) Food spot on and perfectly cooked and served. Excellent Japanese Cocktail list. It turns out there is a Sunday Sushi Buffet all you can eat for 9.95 all day long. I will be there on Sunday and booked there and then.. and half price everything on Tuesday. I will be the one copying the Teriyaki routine opposite the open kitchen with the empty cocktail glasses and empty sushi plate. Loved it ."

  • "It was rather quiet when we turned up but gradually got a bit busier. Staff were friendly and efficient and brought our drinks over quickly. The food itself was really tasty - I had sushi and my friend had teppanyaki steak along with soups and starters. With the 50% off it was great value - will return next time I need a mid week sushi fix."

  • "While this location is different than the Camden location, in they dont have seating around a teppanyaki grill, the menu is great and the quality is tops."

  • "We were sat on a table at an unfair distance from the hot plate, so couldn't see anything. We ordered drinks which was mistaken by the bartender. We then ordered our food. My friend and I ordered the same thing, she asked for hers to be spicy, I was handed to spicy plate. Every birthday, we bring little cupcakes baked by a friend of mine, we've done this at several restaurants and it hasn't been a problem, the manager of the place approached us a said rudely it wasn't allowed. We decided to take off service charge, and this didn't go down well, as we were given short change, we spent 10 minutes arguing, finally we were given the rest, however in a majority of 10ps and 20ps,wasn't bothered to argue anymore. Decentish food, terrible people."

  • "I booked a Teppanyaki table - the restaurant doesn't have any. It merely has a viewing gallery for the kitchen. The food was lovely and the service was very friendly but quite slow."

  • "we were very regular of sen nin but now no more. poor service as no one looked after us for almost 45 mins."

  • "...Again! This is the second time I have been in 6 weeks and I adore it already. Great value with the 50% off offer. The food is consistently of a high quality. Their salmon terriyaki is by far, my favorite. And their vegetable gyoza remains unmatched in quality and taste. A definite for anyone who likes good food!"

  • "Really poor service and poor food and ridiculous price, wouldn't recommend to anyone. Over all a very bad experience. Please avoid."

  • "Ideal location and great food and wine. The service needs some intention to detail. There was an incident concerning the police. My friend and I felt the matter could have been dealt with away from the dinners and us, instead they were literally two tables away and we could hear everything. We decided to get the bill and the waiter encouraged us to stay for a quick drink, which we did and enjoyed the rest of the evening. We later regretted this as once we had finished it took us 15min to get the attention of the waiter again and we could still hear the commotion with the police. I would go again but for future dramas I would suggest the restaurant to contain the commotion better than they did."

  • "I went there few times and mostly left quite satisfied.food is fresh, tasty and innovative. service generally good.Only during my last visit last Tue there were new hires that didn't meet the usual standard, the waitress was keeping returning at our table asking if we had finished when clearly there was still food on the plates and in our mouths. A senior waiter was not only not very prepared on the dishes which is ok for someone who just started but he had quite unpleasant attitude and made a couple of jokes which I found pretty rude. I can say though that was the first time I had a bad experience in that sense and I went to the Islington restaurant at least 4-5 times. The value for money is quite good whe using the Sun/Tues promotions."

  • "I went at an odd time so we were the only people in the restaurant. The menu is more pan Asian than simply Japanese. They don't have a wide range of choice of sushi but whatever I ordered tasted good! It would be pricy if I didn't have the 50% discount and it wouldn't have been worth it without said discount."
    dined on 31/01/2014
  • "The restaurant was great value for money (we got 50% off all the food). Tried two different starters and two mains, all of which were really nice. The amount of food was also good. Service could have bit a little bit faster and I am not really sure why were being served by three different waiters, but that wasn't a big thing. Overall, a nice quiet place."

  • "We took full advantage of the '50% off Tuesdays' so we ordered lots of really good food, sushi, curry, starters and even cocktails all for half price. The food was worth full price but the deal makes it fantastic value. Highly recommend!"

  • "Been to this restaurant a couple of times before. Went to the theatre and then had dinner here. Service was very good, smiley, efficient and polite. shame about the food. One of us had a steak, which was fatty and had a lot of gristle on it, the Chicken was over cooked and dry. And Pad Thai was nothing like Thai noodle. I know the prices are really good with 50% off from total bill, but it will be the last time i would eat here. It felt that we where getting the leftovers."
    dined on 21/01/2014
  • "Restaurant situated in busy region of Angel but easily located due to signage. Nicely decorated. Food was above average and compiled a mix of Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese dishes so the restaurant is not strictly authentic Japanese. Service was disappointingly slow but friendly. It wasn't a particular busy night. However the 50% discount on the bill was a bonus."
    dined on 21/01/2014
  • "Excellent quality Japanese food! Very friendly and top service, we had a highly allergic boy in our group - the manager took care very well, asked for the allergies and looked that the food for him was prepared for him separetly! soon will return."
    dined on 14/01/2014
  • "Tasty food, well presented. Only downfall is the menu is small, more sushi/sashimi/maki rolls options needed."
    dined on 17/01/2014
  • "Despite reading mediocre reviews on TripAdvisor, my friends and I gave Sen Nin a go, as it had good reviews on Toptable and we were tempted by the 50% off food deal. In summary, we spent as much as we would have done at a restaurant without a half price deal as we chose more expensive mains which did not turn out to be in any way superior to an average meal. My sushi platter was bland and unexciting - I would have preferred a selection of sushi from Waitrose or M&S."

  • "I booked Sen Nin for a birthday dinner for 12 people on a Friday night. We fell in love with the look and ambience of the place immediately. The food was absolutely perfect. The service was excellent - manager and waiting staff were very attentive and when my friend had fussy food requirements they bent over backwards to ensure she was happy. I'll be definitely making this my regular!"

  • "Having visited the Islington branch a couple of months ago it was super - sadly this trip wasn't quite the same. The menu has been streamlined and the dishes cut back - probably won't visit again."

  • "Enjoyed the food and the service was good. It was slightly lacking in atmosphere but aside from that..."

  • "Had a most delicious meal in Sen Nin The service is very attentive, personalised and discreet, Lamb Chops & Lobster was fab! Very tasty and nicely presented like a Michelin star restaurant. We also liked all of our starter however peri prawn was a bit dry and tough. We tried 4 different cocktails and they were all very good and improved cocktail was outstanding. Very beautiful restaurant and I would highly recommend to any one, worth the journey."

  • "This was the third time that we have been to Sen nin but this time we found totally new look with many changes. Staff were very polite but we did not like Pad Thai noodles and salad, cocktails were good selections but very pricey."

  • "The food was actually quite creative for starting with a Japanese inspiration. However, the service left much to be lacking."

  • "decent Japanese food, especially with the 50% offer but would be reasonable value even without it. The only thing I was surprised by was many Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese options there were on what isn't the biggest menu ever. However we stuck with classic Japanese and weren't disappointed."
