Tables were not cramped so conversation was possible. The 3 course menu including champagne was affordably priced and special mention must be made of the cheese buffet. Excellent choice! I do however have one negative comment - 12.5% service was included in the bill which is acceptable. There was then the option of paying a gratuity, which I feel is a bit cheeky! Guinea fowl and salmon for our main, the jus served with the guinea fowl was delightful and the salmon cooked so lightly with a yummy crispy skin, it just melted in your mouth. For dessert we both enjoyed the apricot soufflé which is worth every minute of the 12 minute preparation. The soufflé was so light and the rice pudding ice cream provides a really interesting texture in the mouth. The dining room is very light and airy with tables set comfortably apart but not too far that you cannot share dining compliments with neighbours. Our pea soup starter was absolutely delicious; it was like liquid velvet and the hen's egg was perfect. I had duck breast as my main course. It was a simply cooked with minimal fuss; perfect for lunch. We both enjoyed the same chocolate mousse desert which was just perfect end to a beautiful meal. The restaurant was very busy throughout the evening but it never felt like this with regards to the attention of staff and the general comfort of the environment. The food was outstanding and the chef was very accommodating. He created a fish dish with potatoes and broccolli for my 11 year old son. The starter with smoked char (never knew that this was a fish) was exceptional, as was the main course with pollack and squid.It was mu husband's birthday and the staff brought out petit fours with 'Happy Birthday' iced on to the slate dish. Throughout the time the waiters were attentive and very friendly.

The set lunch menu with wine was excellent value. The standard of the cuisine was exactly what you would expect from a Roux restaurant. The staff seated us in a lovely separate booth which enabled us to have a lovely private conversation and really enjoy the occasion. The service was immaculate and every member of the team was attentive to their respective duties without being overbearing with their presence. The maitre d'hôtel and sommelier were particularly welcoming. The room is large and elegant, but unlike the Gautier, not in any way homely or intimate.

The Sole (45 pounds) was overcooked and dry. The sirloin was good, and the lamb was average.
What was really disappointing were the starters. Two of us had Scallops (an automatic choice for me, when available). The restaurant had clearly run out of scallops (we ate late) and should have told us so. Instead we had 2 very small scallops each, totally inadequate as a starter. We ended up actually having five courses when you include the extra little chefs specials. One bit of advice is have the cheese board, it was amazing! I can only eat goats cheese as I am intolerant to cows and I was expecting one cheese, they gave me 6 different goats cheese! Fantastic! Oh and make sure you order a glass of the chablis, it was divine! Amusee bouche, 3 course meal with cheese as an alternative to dessert, coffee and petit fours with half a bottle of wine was £45 per head. When it is easy to pay £20 for a main course at a gastro pub, this is excellent value even before finding that it really is fine dining at its best.
