A word from Restaurant Sauterelle
Located in London in the heart of the City, on the south mezzanine of the Royal Exchange building, Restaurant Sauterelle is an elegant haven for City execs and well-heeled shoppers. Head Chef Arnaud Delannay, brings his background in Provence to the fore with a classical French menu which changes seasonally. Using only the highest quality produce, his menu focuses on clean, incisive flavours and unfussy presentation. Popular dishes include: Orkney Isle scallop, curried cauliflower purée, sauce vierge and micro basil; 12 hour cooked pork belly, smoked Secretts carrot purée, Swiss chard, red wine sauce and Apple tart tatin. Few London restaurants have as delightful a location as Restaurant Sauterelle, and the French menu, superb staff and excellent wines make the most of a very good thing. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Service was slow and uneducated. The head waiter, speaking with at heavy french accent, tried to make us buy a more expensiv champagne and totally overdid his enthusiasm every time we ordered af course: "Excellent choice", he repeated. We had to ask for aperitifs and bread and special menu. The food was alright, but too pricey. More like hotel food. Surroundings were spectacular."

  • "I have visited several times and have always had an enjoyable lunch professionally served. A reasonably priced lunch with a lovely ambience."

  • "Took my girlfirend here for her birthday and was really great evening. The service was superb, we had a great table overlooking the royal exchange and the food was excellent. We had the set menu and with wine the bill came to £96 which I thought seemed very reasonable. For the quality of the experience, food and wine I thought this place was really excellent. Highly recommended!"

  • "The setting of this restaurant, in the Royal Exchange, as well as the exceptional quality of the food (ordered the 3 course set menu) make Sauterelle one of my new favourites in the City. Also, the service was incredibly friendly, especially our waiter Alexandre. Strongly recommend (and already have to my friends) this place for a cozy romantic dinner or even a formal business meeting. And, I will be back."

  • "At lunchtime Sauterelle enjoys a bird's eye view over the comings and goings of the magnificent interior of the Royal Exchange. Because if its central position in the City the clientele is mainly business, but the decision to offer a reasonably -priced set menu (with a choice of three dishes for each course) means that individuals can also afford to eat there. The food is interesting and good."

  • "A wonderful setting in the Royal Exchange overlooking the Atrium. food, drink and ambiance was excelled by the the attentiveness of the staff. As it was my birthday, a surprise plate of small delicious petits fours arrived - no charge."

  • "I booked the toptable deal at this restaurant which was excellent value for money. There was a fish, meat and veg option for the starter and main course with cheese, a tart and (I forget) for desert. The accopanying cocktail is more a liquer which we were recommended to have after the meal and I am glad we did. I had the tiramisu cocktail which was creamy and divine. The staff are very attentive. Overall a great experience. So much so, I am returning for lunch later this month."

  • "Great food and service in a grand setting! Expensive without special offer but definitely worth trying with TT offer if you have not been before!"

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed our meal here. We chose the set menu, on which every option sounded equally lovely. Good value too. Service was unusually good for London - very amenable and suitably attentive. The food was really delicious and the setting is really nice - relaxed but smart."
    dined on 06/02/2014
  • "My starter was very attractive but very small and bland. 2 scallops on some smoked aubergine. Only one other of us had a starter which was a minute chicken wing swimming in a tasteless brown broth. There was a considerable wait (approx one hour) between the starter and the mains which, considering it was a business lunch meeting, was not acceptable. The staff were apologetic and offered us free drinks to compensate. However, when the mains arrived they were also very bland and I left about half of mine (something I never do!) I had lamb cooked 3 ways and one of my colleagues and the steak and they were both tough. One of us had bass which was over cooked. The vege risotto, apparently was very good. I would not go back to Sauterelle."

  • "Great views from the restaurant over the Royal Exchange central plaza make this a good venue for impressing. The staff were friendly and courteous and atmosphere fine. The food prices were what you'd expect from a typical French restaurant although not all the dishes were mind blowing, considering the prices. Would certainly go back."

  • "Great all round, just that pre dinner drinks a little pricey."
    dined on 27/02/2014
  • "Went there for my birthday and had the set menu. The restaurant is amazingly set up and is inside the royal exchange. Although not cheap the food was delicious and presented beautifully. It was a great place to go for my birthday dinner."
    dined on 25/02/2014
  • "The restaurant was completely empty and only a few tables filled later in the evening. The place has potential given the view of the Royal Exchange however there is no music and there is little atmosphere. The service was very average and the waitresses/waiters were slow and did not smile. Food was average. They gave us a complimentary beetroot soup which tasted more like sauce. Seabass was ok although the dressing was not nice. Bread was not warm. May not go there again."

  • "Always a treat to eat at La Sauterelle. The Maitre D is charming, the food taste bud tittilating and the ambience very special. The set menu is a great bargain. I take different friends and they are always eager to bring others"

  • "Great value set menu, with all the extras you'd expect from a top restaurant. While it was a little quiet when we went as it was fairly early, we'll defo be back. Service was warm and attentive, without being effusive."
    dined on 27/01/2014
  • "La Sauterelle offers a very good prix fixe menu as well as a good a la carte. The service is good and the food is always excellent."

  • "We were a party of 6 and very much enjoyed the set menu as it was complimented with a few extra treats. The bread was absolutely delicious! Definitely would go there again."

  • "The service took away from the food. As well as our food being delayed (we sat down at 8.45, and tucked into our last course at around 11.40, this was on valentines day with a limited menu available) we found the staff to be disingenuous and, also, while our meal took an excessive amount of time to be served, couples with later bookings were being rushed through their courses - to ensure that the restaurant could close in time. Until the actual meal - I had a good experience with the restaurant: I had brequested that we had a table in one of the restaurant's iconic arches - they were extremely responsive in arranging this for me.The cocktails were top notch, as was the great birdseye view of the Royal Exchange. Extortionately priced."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "Nice ambience in the Royal Exchange, quite busy downstairs but upstairs feels quiet enough and tables are well located for privacy. Food on set menu was good quality and value, 3 courses for around £23 was more than enough for most apetites. Woudl definitley recommend and go back."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "Great location - but even if ordering the set lunch would have expected better food - blue cheese salad with huge chunks of cheese, a vegetarian dish that was frankly mean. Also a long wait for main course - though we did receive an apology for that. And they were not that busy."
    dined on 13/02/2014
  • "The food was genuinely tasty and the ingredients appeared to be fresh and expensive. I have been to some ‘high profile’ places that just carry the name however the food is well over-priced and mediocre. This was not the case here. The service was attentive and we did not feel rushed."
    dined on 11/02/2014
  • "Food and service were excellent, would recommend the lunch offer."
    dined on 06/02/2014
  • "Consistent quality in terms of food and service in an outstanding but understated setting."
    dined on 07/02/2014
  • "This is a gorgeous restaurant tucked away at Royal Exchange. Tables overlooking the interior courtyard, and the food excellent. I would highly recommend for location and food, the only downside was very small cheese selection but this is a very small point."
    dined on 31/01/2014
  • "Happy to use the upstairs restaurant in the Royal Exchange for a change. Starter, two scallops for £14+ Belly of Pork as a main so chewy it was hard to talk - £22+ Wine. Wine please. Third time- Wine. Coffee. Hmmm. Excuse me could we have the coffee... Very charming waiter but I felt distracted by impatience. Food totally uninspiring."

  • "After working in the City for 15+ years, I am miffed I haven't found this gem before. A good french resturant which doesn't break the break is hard to find in the square mile, but I'm delighted to say this is one. The service was exceptionally good, as one would expect in France - our waiter/maitre d' was the perfect blend of knowledgable and deferential, recommending a few things on the menu and complimenting my wine choice. However, when our food came, the experience went from being very good, to absolutely sublime. It is one of the best lunches I've ever eaten. Very well thought out plates, flavours and textures. Go there without hesitation, try the set menu, we are definitely returning to try the tasting menu!"

  • "We are ladies who lunch on Fridays and this is at least our 6th visit to Sauterelle..We always receive a friendly welcome and the food is beautifully presented and full of flavour. The service is good, as is the wine list.. The Royal Exchange is a very interesting venue.. We will always return."

  • "Very good service and overall setting, the meal was good but served in just a bit too tiny portions (could be fixed with more consistent sides)"
    dined on 15/01/2014
  • "It was our first time dining at Sauterelle - and, the experience met our high expectations. I chose mackeral (starter), cod (mains), & lemon tart (desert) from the set menu. Each course was excellent. We enjoyed excellent service too. We are looking forward to visiting this restaurant again."
    dined on 10/01/2014
  • "This was a lovely evening for us. The service was faultless and the food was great. I ordered the rice pudding for dessert and it was undercooked, however, this was replaced with a beautiful creme brulee straight away. The waiter was so attentive that I didn't even have to explain that I was unhappy, he just fixed it all for me. I think this is what makes for a great dining experience - not everything can be perfect, but it's how the staff manage this that really matters. We would recommend the restaurant for special occasions - beautiful building, food and service. Thanks for a great night and hopefully, we will return again soon!"

  • "You can't beat the location of this restaurant overalooking the courtyard of the Royal Exchange. Dim lighting in the evening makes for a very relaxed and romantic atmosphere. The food is very carefully cooked and presented. A personal favorite."

  • "Nice food, reasonable service and the most overpriced omelette ever. Desserts were fab though."
    dined on 10/01/2014
  • "I received a warm welcome from the restaurant staff and was shown promptly to my seat with a lovely view overlooking the Royal Exchange. The service during the meal was efficient and unobtrusive with helpful staff happy to explain (many times over) about the menu choices. I had the Top Table menu which was very good value. The food was good (tiny starters) but a substantial main course. Dessert was divine. The tables are nicely spaced so you don't feel squashed and you can converse without shouting. All in all, I would definitely recommend this restaurant and I hope to visit again."

  • "We picked Sauterelle for the dinner on the last Friday before Christmas as it seemed the most likely venue to remain relatively civilised on an evening when the City is full to bursting. We were right and enjoyed the food and ambience. It was the first visit for our friends and they felt it was a great choice. We'll be back."
    dined on 20/12/2013
  • "The Sauterelle is a lovely restaurant with an amazing value set menu of 2 courses for £20 considering the quality of the food. We had booked for 1.15pm, but told our table wasn't ready. When I returned at 1.30pm, my guest was sitting at a "temporary" table while a nicer one became free. We didn't have time to waste so stayed where we were, but I was a bit annoyed at the chaotic impression we had at the start. Anyway, things really improved with great service from the waiter and fantastic food. I would definitely go back."
