matsuri still a great place
the first time i went to this restuarant was when i was taken by japanese clients there when it first opened in the early 1990's
it still delivers wonderful japanese cuisine with great service.
Went for lunch o a weekday, therefore not as busy as expected, but both ambience and service were very good. Throughout our lunch me and my friends have always been well considered by our waitress, a Japanese young lady who helped us also understanding the menu, where a great selection of sushi, tempura, meat and noodles could be found. Plus, every chef has their own specialties, in accordance to the dishes ordered from the teppan-yaki!
Been to Matsuri asecond time
Been to Matsuri asecond time and absolutely love it!!
Great job guys!! will come back again
Good fun Teppanyaki
I love this Japanese restaurant. It is one of best I've been to recently.
The food actually tastes very good. I was glad to have chosen the grilled wagyu beef and some exotic mushroom, washed down with saki. Lobster is on the small side, as the same with any other restaurant, but afterall this is not Australia. The dessert of fried icecream stole the show of the evening. I wouldn't mind having that again, even if it's just to watch the flame goes up in front of me.
The staff were very friendly, typical Japanese style. This is a perfect setting for a romantic dinner, although I must say it's not cheap, but I think you deserve it.
Great service and fresh food
We went to Matsuri St James for teppan-yaki on a Friday night with a couple of friends. It's not a cheap night out but food was good and fresh. Service was excellent.
Being our first time, we opted for the set menu. Seafood and steak were cooked perfectly. Food, drinks and service charge came to about £80pp.
There wasn't much dispaly of the chef's skills that we expected but all in all a good fun night out with friends for a special occasion.
Teh service, food and attentionto detail was all excellent. We had 7 Set Matsuri Menus that allowed a group to try everything that was cooked infront of this group. Great experience
The food was plentiful, and some new items I've ever heard of before. The service was so helpful! And they did an extra fire show on the grill for my birthday, and took our picture. It was very sweet :) The price was very big, but we had a table of seven. Great overall
I went there on Sat and the service / food were good. However it is more family day during weekends.
Great place, but expensive
The selection and quality of the food was high, the portions small until the final part. The ambience and atmosphere was warm and social, although our chef didn't create the excitement we expected. (No food acrobatics)
The service was polite and attentive and it felt like an occasion. It was expensive for what it was - £80 a head plus they added around £35 in sevice charges (total). Worth it once for a special occasion, but not exciting enough to return at the price.
the service was very good！
the service was very good！
ice cream was nice，I like it
Melt in your mouth sushi!
This is fast becoming my favourite Japanese in London. It's convenient to get to and once inside, you are taken care of very well. We've tried the tepanyaki dishes and the dishes they cook in front of you too, but on this occasion, we opted for sushi rolls, edamame and miso soup. It is all prepared there and then and comes to you wonderfully mouth wateringly soft and full of flavour.
We also had their cocktails which are always spot on! A Cosmo and a Mojito certainly hit the spot!
Very attentive service and although in my mind it is pricey, it is wonderful for a special night out or if you were going with a group of friends. I have also seen several business lunches conducted over an Asahi beer and a slice of salmon sashimi!
From the minute we walked
From the minute we walked in, to the minute we left, my lady and I experienced the highest level of service and attention to detail. It was truly a memorable occasion and Matsuri immediately went to the top of our favourites list. It is hard to single out one particular element as the whole evening was outstanding. We spent nearly 4 hours at the restaurant and were never made to feel as if they wanted us to leave. It also seemed as if every other person in the restaurant was as delighted with the experience as us! Matsuri ranks as one of the most exceptional dining experiences possible. We will return again and again!
My wife and I have been coming to this restaurant for many, many years now. This time It was my wife's birthday and the food, service, and ambience as always, was very good! Well done Matsuri, yet again.
The Wagyu beef is a must
It had been too long since my previous visit to Matsuri St James and I wasn't disappointed. Everything we ordered was delicious but it was the Australian Wagyu beef that stood out high above the rest and it was excellently cooked. I have not found any better in London and Matsuri St James continues to be my favourite Japanese restaurant outside of Japan.
Quality, Service and value !
I had been looking for a suitable restaurant for a birthday treat for my partner. I was looking for quality but without crazy prices. There gimmicky Teppanyaki grills in London where the food quality doesnt warrant the price. Matsuri is a lovely venue with a calm ambience and extremely friendly service without being overbearing (no annoying constant checks). The quality of the food was outstanding, very tender meat and fish. We played safe as first timers with the set menu but we watched others and the quality of the Sushi looked amazing so we will be more adventurous next time. If you want good quality food in a classy but not stuffy atmosphere, I cant recommend highly enough. (The flambe ice cream was great fun for the Birthday :-)
If in central London and looking
If in central London and looking to dine tepanyaki style then look no further than Matsuri St James. Its a very large venue so we are usually able to secure a table even if last minute, and the food never disappoints. Cooked in front of you the set menus albeit pricey but quality, quantity and service make it a worthwhile treat.
Our children love this restaurant
Our son asked to go there for his fifteenth birthday. We have been happy visitors since before he was born.
Starters include sushi, sashimi, and tempura, all freshly prepared.
The main dish is teppanyaki, food grilled on the table. Choice of steak, seafood, or vegetarian, although there are other styles of cooking available. e.g. Our son likes grilled eel on rice. The more expensive set menu is better value than it first appears because it includes all of the starter courses rather than a choice of starters.
The Fireball Ice Cream is mainly for show, although still good. They pour a flammable liquid (probably Sake) onto ice cream and set light to it, generating a huge fireball. It is then served on a pancake with grilled pineapple.
Matsuri's food was simply
Matsuri's food was simply delicious, the staff were all very polite.
Only note for any vegetarian diners looking to come to the restaurant - the hot food that those sitting around you order is cooked right in front you at the group table. Chunks of chicken and a slab of beef isn't pleasent to see being sliced up and cooked, but when the half lobster came out and it's neurons were still firing as it's legs twitched before being put under the cloche, it was all too much.
An overall good experience
Nice food, cooked at the table. The service is outstanding !!!
We really enjoyed our lunch at Matsuri. Very much home from home experience. The food and service was excellent and it was great to see your food being cooked in front of you. Would definitely recommend this restaurant and will return.
Good service. We enjoyed.
Per-requested thing was prepared. The improvement point just I want to say that Matsuri didn't response to my request via email. Actually, I called Matsuri and confirmed that my request was accepted. They sous have been responses.
Been to Matsuri before. We love Teppan-yaki and Matsuri is a good place to eat at. It's nice and they are friendly. Good value for money. Of course it can be even better, in Japan. But this is very nice for being in Europe.
Graet evening at Matsuri -
Graet evening at Matsuri - was recommended by Japanese work colleagues, definitively worth a trip. A real treat!
ironically, though this is a teppanyaki restaurant and we went there for the teppanyaki, we're glad we ordered other side dishes as well. For teppanyaki, we ordered the teriyaki chicken as we don't eat beef. The garlic fried rice was yummy! but the chicken was quite dry, still tasted fine when it's hot, but towards the end of the meal, it was quite a torture to eat them. We also ordered vegetable tempura and ebi tempura sushi. The tempura is excellent! If I were to go back again, i'll definitely just order the tempura.
Overall, meal for 2 of us (each ordered a chicken teriyaki teppanyaki set with 3 side dishes) costed £90, which is fine since teppanyaki meals are never cheap but the teppanyaki wasn't as satisfying as hoped.
Sushi at Matsuri
Matsuri is a place for the discerning Japan-ophile. Be prepared to sit at the sushi counter for a fabulous array of amazing, fresh and deliciouos sushi and sashimi. I go there as often as my bank account dares. I am yet to do the tepanyaki experience and may have to investigate soon.
Beautiful meal, a bit pricey
Beautiful meal, a bit pricey but very worth it!!!!
Second visit, this time to celebrate daughters 21st. Excellent service and very enjoyable meal. Hopefully will return again soon!
Outstanding service and food.
Outstanding service and food.
Lovely and refined ambience.
Will definitely be back!
Great meal lovely experience
My husband and I had a great experience at Matsuri. The food was outstanding - very high quality and beautifully presented, service had that magical touch of being on hand without being at all intrusive. However this needs to be a special occasion - it is very pricey!
I came here with my husband. We tried one of the teppanyaki courses and a unagi bento lunch. All in all, I have to say it was quite good value for the amount and quality of food that we got. We had almost everything, sashimi, sushi, tempura, the lovely clear consomme, the steamed rice is just right and perfect. The only disappointment I would say is that the sirloin steak teppanyaki is quite sinewy, as a result, very chewy in bits. But the bento boxes I see other guests having look really nice and I'll be tempted to go back and try those with other friends.
Matsuri staff are gracious, efficient and very helpful. The preparation of the black cod and ginger was spot on and the sushi and sashimi was excellent.
This is the second time we have been to Matsuri. The first was a five years ago for a lunch event with a large group. That experience was so good, we decided to book again on our infrequent trips to London.
We enjoyed the dinner. The service was excellent and very friendly and welcoming. The food was very good in all respects - the quality, quantity and preparation. We enjoyed the experience of having it cooked in front of us and the chefs were friendly and competent. In terms of price, it is what we expected with a good London restaurant.
We would certainly go again.
Top quality sushi, just beautiful
Top quality sushi, just beautiful to look at, presented in that lovely Japanese ceremonial style.
Japanese Food Olympics
Great experience. I had been there many years ago and this week was no difference. They kept the high standards as usual. Food was excellent and the staff were very professional attending to all your needs making you feel at home. It is highly recommended and deserves the Gold medal in Food Olympics.
cheeky waiter but good food
Food is very good there though expensive. The bill was £282 for 3 people with no alcohol or dessert. They brought us the wrong bill first then when we pointed that out and they changed it, the waiter brought us a plate full of 20 or so mini chocolates to apologize. We ate some and I pocketed the rest. The waiter then came back and said the plate full of chocolates was a joke and not meant to be all taken. I then had to put the chocolates back on the plate. Although the way the waiter made the comment was not unpleasant but it was cheeky and he should not be embarrassing the clients, especially when we noticed that there was a bowl full of the chocolates available for clients at the reception when we left.
Excellent teppanyaki .. unfortunate
Excellent teppanyaki .. unfortunately it seems that the air vent hoods above the cooking surfaces at our and the near table were not working, thus we left with clothes totally immersed in cooking smoke..
Really enjoyed our second visit to Matsuri. The food was excellent, the shared dining experience is very sociable and it's exciting to watch the food being cooked in front of you. It's a great place to eat for large groups as you can all sit around and enjoy the tappanyaki dining together. If you don't like sushi, there is an extensive choice of meat and vegetables. Will definitely be returning.
Quality of foods and services were superb. Selection of drinks was also sensible with sufficient range.
A busy day dinner
The athmosphere was outstanding, the food was marvellous. Although the personnel had a very busy evening, the quality of service was good. Not cheap, but value for money, ayway. I recommend.
Once again excellent food efficient friendly service and fine wine
As good as always.
My wife and have dined here several times. The quality and professionalism of the staff never falter. From the welcome, through the pre-dinner drinks, and three superb courses cooked at the table to the final farewell, we were made to feel like honoured diplomats, not just customers.
The food was as ever superb, the wine was expertly served and complimented the meal.
This is a restaurant worth revisiting regularly.
Restaurant was great, service was probably one of the best I have seen. If you drinking alchol, the bill can add up very quickly. Otherwise great service and food.
Atmoshpere was as excellent
Atmoshpere was as excellent as ever but all of us had the impression that slices of sashimi were smaller than on previous occasions. Maybe we just did not have enough sake.
Took my two 'adult' children
Took my two 'adult' children there to celebrate their Birthday, perfect place to celebrate such an occasion. The food was very good and portion size was more than adequate. A very good selection of wines which are reasonably priced and the handful available by the glass are good quality and varied enough to suit most tastes. I'd certainly go again.
I have been here on and off for the last 15 yrs. today the service was excellent. A waitress call Saori served us and she was very professional and making the whole experience very enjoyable. It was a my son's birthday and they got a card for him too.
Great food, long wait.
I've been to Matsuri several times and really enjoy the Teppanyaki style. This last time was very busy and the service was extremely slow - three hours from start to finish. Needless to say we were very hungry when the food finally came, and it was as good as usual thankfully. It won't put me off going again, but they need to up their game a bit for the service next time, especially as they add 12.5% for it.
The overall service is very good. High quality in the food served (we took the Deluxe Seafood).
We had also great service and very good explanations from the 'Maître sommelier') about the wine taken ( A Chablis Premier Cru).
All the staff was very kind and provided a high level attention to all our party.
We appreciated very much this dinner.
I shall recommand this restaurant which I think is in the very top level.
Good amience and a great staff. Tried the Matsuri course menu and the whole party loved it.
Brilliant dining experience
We had a great time at Matsuri, I have been looking for a restaurant for my wife's birthday and when I saw that they make the food at your table, I was quite excitied. She enjoyed it and the experience was great, a bit of a show really The food and service was excellent. Definitely good for a special occasion.
Excellent service and food
Went for the Aoi set meal, which takes about 80 minutes, and was without a doubt the best Tepanyaki I've experienced in London. The service was personable and attentive,, and the food was above excellent (a particular favorite being the Lobster head miso soup). Prices start to stack up when you add in a few drinks that in my opinion are overpriced for what they were - but that's to be expected in Mayfair. Excellent food, excellent atmosphere, outstanding service. Would love to go again, but i'll have to save up a bit first.
