The chargrilled vegetables
The chargrilled vegetables were more charcoal than vegetable!
Service was superb and the food was great, will definately be going back!
A completely new look for the 'Dragon' from my last visit. The food is delicious and the staff are delightful. The service was probably a bit slow, but we were in a group and that didn't matter. At the end of the meal after we had paid, more table water was brought unasked for so that we could continue chatting. A lovely atmosphere and highly recommended!
Outstanding welcome, delicious food: the day's Halibut special was the best fish dish I have had in years, followed by the very naughty but nice soft hazelnut brownie, just the perfect texture. Loved the candle and rendition of happy birthday for hubby too.
Would definitely recommend this restaurant. Had a wonderful meal and were well looked after by the staff. A bit expensive, but fine for a special occasion. Quality of the food was very high.
Cocktails & potatoes
We started with pre dinner cocktails, I recommend the elder bubble. The food was very tasty and served quickly but my only complaint was about the roast potatoes. They were rock hard and even a steak knife couldn't get us into them. After 5 minutes of wrestling we found they were perfect on the inside but we didn't have enough muscle strength to tackle more than one of them!
A Valentine's treat
It's a few years since we ate here as we relocated, so we were surprised at the makeover. Very well done and it has taken the restaurant upmarket. We missed the old style ambience and décor and needless to say, the lower prices, but that doesn't deter us from praising the new look and cuisine.
Our visit was for Valentine's and there was only a Valentine's menu available. It was delicious in every way. Thank you! We may return to check out the everyday menu another time.
A special night out
The food was very very good the squid starter is definitely highly recommended. The service spot was on with plenty of attentive staff even on a busy friday night and the recent refurbishment makes the place look smart and stylish. Expensive for regular haunt but great for special night out.
Best night I've had in ages
Really I didn't want to leave. The staff here have it just right and the ambience was fantastic
Tuesday with friends
Great as always. They made us very welcome. We ate and drank very well. Going again very soon.
We were very well looked after
We were very well looked after by the young and enthusiastic staff
Food very good, and ample portions
Beautiful venue, tasteful decor, polite attentive service and tasty, well presented food. What more could one ask for?
We visited Bel and the Dragon on Friday evening for the first time in quite a while and were glad we went back. The food and service were very good and the ambience remains interesting and different form the other restaurants in the area. I had the fish of the day, which was Turbot. It was superb - as good as I have had anywhere. We will visit the Bel and Dragon again soon.
Good quality Sunday lunch
Very good lunch, beef was lovely and the roast potatoes nice and crispy!!!
Amazing tarte tatin for pudding really good we will return
Excellent Service and Food
As always despite a little expensive food was excellent and service very good.
Spot on :-)
Second visit here since the refurb and just as good as we'd remembered. Atmosphere is really special, though helped along by some skilled cocktail making! Ticks all the right boxes :-)
couldn't fault it
lovely choice on the menu, we had for starters pink peppercorn squid and an asian mackerel from the specials, for mains we had suckling pig and lobster, and a selection of ice creams for pud. All of it was delicious. Everyone was really friendly, we will definitely be back, when we have saved some more pennies. It is 'treat' prices, for us.
Food excellent. Service superb. Prices far too high! Overall impression spoiled by prices.
We dined at the Bel and Dragon as we live in Churt and understand that the Pride of the Valley, Churt is to become one of your group and we thought of bringing some local friends along to try you out. We did find it disappointing that there were too few people dining to create a good atmosphere. I suspect that as people are finding things tight financially they may choose a slightly cheaper restaurant these days.
We have seen 'The Pride' go through several owners over the past 18 years and very much hope you can bring it back to life. Good luck.
Bank Holiday Lunch
Very pleased with the very different menu - everyone loved it and said we would go back again without doubt. Nice and adult, not too much kids stuff about, and plenty of space.
Having moved to Godalming relatively recently, we should in theory be trying out a new restaurant every week, but we keep gravitating back to Bel and the Dragon, especially when we have friends and family to stay. You would never know it's part of a mini-chain - the service is really special, the food fantastic quality and we shamelessly manage to eat three courses every time we go. This is the first review I've ever written for a restaurant online - simply because the consistency is so good and we have never eaten there five times and come away more than satisfied on every level, every time.
Excellent Sunday lunch
Very good Sunday roast - quite expensive but excellent quality. The restaurant has a great atmosphere being in an old church. The acoustics are very good and even when busy it is not noisy. The upstairs is probably a nicer area although downstairs has comfortable semi circular seating. The staff are friendly and attentive. Nice menu although not a huge choice of dishes. Overall I would recommend although it is expensive.
Fine dining at mid-market prices
The re-vamped Bel and Dragon have not only succeeded in creating a comfortable and elegant restaurant but have brought together a great team of chefs who create excellent food. Though at the upper end of the gastro-type pub in terms of pricing, the food is worth every bit of the spend. We have had Sunday lunch here twice (9 months or so between), each time with a party of 6 (4 adults and 2 children, age 6 and 9, who are made to feel equally welcome) and the experience has not diminished over time. We have dined at all levels of restaurant from McDonalds to 3 Michelin Stars and can honestly say the food here is first rate/well above equivalent establishments. I have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant.
I had lunch here on Saturday with three friends and we had a brill time. Every dish was very well done and there was nothing on the menu that we wouldn't have wanted to eat. Our waitress was fantastic too.
An enjoyable experience
A beautiful restaurant in an unusual building. The staff were very attentive, friendly and professional (although a glass of wine I'd ordered was forgotten about). There was a lot of choice on the menu, but my friend and I found the layout of the menu rather confusing. The chef was very accommodating when I requested a starter salad as a main meal. Wine is served in glass tumblers, which I don't like. I like to drink wine out of a wine glass, so that it feels like alcohol rather than a soft drink! The only drawback to dining at this restaurant is the price, I found it very expensive and would therefore only go for a special occasion or as a treat.
Great for a special occasion. Excellent service, lovely food, tables well spaced out and a fabulous ambience. Elderbubble cocktail is delicious, and barman offered to make any cocktail we wanted to create.
Happy Anniversary to us!
As a vicar I was curious to see how the interior of the church had been adapted for use as a restaurant and was gobsmacked by the sensitivity and style of the design; I think it's fabulous. I also enjoyed all the vicar cartoons in the corridor on the way to the loos. The service was friendly and efficient and the food delicious, we had a delightful evening and would certainly go back there again and recommend it to friends. It was very hot, that was the only problem and the ceiling fans didn't seem to be making any difference, but we did visit on one of the hottest summer evenings we've seen for a long time; we could have chosen to eat outside instead but were so taken with the interior that we wanted to enjoy it fully.
Excellent restaurant and great
Excellent restaurant and great portion sizes. Service perfect. Thrice cooked chips a must. Good for a special occasion as a little pricey.
Well worth a visit!
A lovely restaurant! Food was excellent with a good menu choice and great service. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful and they have made great use of the space. There is a lovely relaxed, friendly and informal atmosphere though in saying that the staff are well trained, attentive without being intrusive, and very professional. Will definitely go again.
V good on the whole
Food was good, but not outstanding. Unfortunately my husband's lobster main was overcooked which was a shame at £25.00!! Service good (apart from the simple 'sorry' regarding the lobster). My main issue was the low level of lighting, but maybe thats my age !!
I booked Bel and The Dragon
I booked Bel and The Dragon as a surprise for my husband for our wedding anniversary. From the moment we arrived to when we left, the service we received was superb. The food was delicious and the staff were extremely friendly. I would definitely recommend the Bel and The Dragon, we had a great meal and its an anniversary we won't forget!
Wednesday with the girls
Bel and the Dragon was good as always. Great to see a new menu. The tuna to start was delicious. Shame there wasn't room for their spectacular tarte tatin.
Great food and great service!
This was our 3rd visit to Bel and the Dragon. The food was even better than our last visit.
I highly recommend the Mussels in Ale and the Burata!
My wife and I eat out regularly. We were visiting Surrey for a few days and I booked the restaurant based entirely on the online recommendations and reviews so we turned up with some apprehension. We shouldn't have worried. Everything about our experience was fabulous. The food and Service were excellent. Some of the staff took time out to talk to us during the evening and everyone was very attentive and couldn't do enough to help even wrapping some of their really excellent roast potatoes into a stylish "doggy bag" for my wife to take away as she could not finish them at the table, but was reluctant to part with them, I would strongly recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Nice Anniversary Dinner
Food good quality and great service. Waiters/Waitresses very courteous and happy to assist with what to eat and drink. Nice atmosphere and a very pleasant evening.
Excellent service, non intrusive
Excellent service, non intrusive , but attentive and just right.
Food delicious and distinctive.
Beautiful location, inside church, would be perfect for a special occaison.
Great ambience - former church
There were 4 dining - we were given a booth - highly recommended. Much less formal and more cosy than the usual 4-on-a-table. Wait staff were efficient and polite, very well spoken, a delight. But why do restaurants serve food on a wooden board? Why can't they use plates? The food portions were adequate. It's a bit pricey, but good for special occasions or if you want to impress. The restaurant is in a deconsecrated church, which gives great atmosphere.
Really great meal
I have been to the Bel and Dragon twice now and I can't fault the food. On this occasion we had the muscles and pink peppercorn squid to start and both were delicious. I would also highly recommend the suckling pig which had great flavour. Due to the portion size I couldn't manage a dessert but my partner had the chocolate fondant which was yummy. Service was good and it had a good feel to the restaurant. Shame it is quite expensive but you get what you pay for.
Thursday with Gavin
Gavin is a foodie who isn't easily pleased, but he really liked this place.
dinner October 25th
we booted to celebrate our sons 15th birthday. we're all foodies and unusually for us every dish was fab the service was just great and although having booked on line and requesting a nice table and the reasons why we were given the chefs take our sons birthday was verbally acknowledged and the desert subtly recognized his birthday too. one of the most pleasant meals out for all of us. highly recommended
Great food, highly recommend the Suckling Pig cooked perfectly. End the night on a coffee martini delicious. Bill was high but not because of the food, the alcohol but thats a personal consumption issue! Ambience was good, good music and excellent service.
Just looking for a light lunch on our way to Guildford so booked the Bel and Dragon through top table.
Everything about the Bel and Dragon was perfect, the attention to detail was evident everywhere and the food was fantastic.
Dont hesitate to eat here, I can't wait to go again.
first visit to bell and dragon
staff were welcoming and attentive
food was very good and not over priced
ambience was a strange mixture but it seemed to work
Attractive setting, tables
Attractive setting, tables set out with plenty of space, and an original menu carried out with style. Attentive service. This was our first visit (and a business dinner) but we both left saying we'd like to come back with our other halves. Very enjoyable.
Good night out
Excellent service. Attentive staff. Cocktails and wine selection very good. Only let down was our choice from the rotisserie as the pork was dry and roast potatoes seemed to be yesterday's. The starters, dessert and fish of the day were good. Will go again but avoid rotisserie.
Great restaurant, amazing
Great restaurant, amazing atmosphere. Our waitress was very friendly and very happy to accomodate our little toddler. Food was amazing.
Only negative note, was the price of our meal as it was much higher than expected. We were recommended the special, which was not on the menu and we were not explained that it would cost twice as much as the option shown on the menu.
Great food, great staff
Starters delicious. Especially the squid. Rib of beef so tender you don't need a fork
Great staff efficient and smiling!
Great decor as well!!!
Great Sunday Roast
Enjoyed excellent Sunday Lunch here. The roast beef was amazing and the Apple Tarte Tatin was delicious. Nice setting in this converted church with friendly efficient service
The food was excellent and
The food was excellent and we enjoyed the meal despite the sometimes slow service when it came to drinks
Came here last Sunday and it was my first visit for a few years. It has definitely even better than it used to be. Can thoroughly recommend it.
Will be back soon!
