Hix is good quality
We had cuttlefish, which was a bit different, the oyster selection, flank steak and veal chop. All were very good quality. The veal chop was a nice change from staek and the side of peas and broad beans went well. A very enjoyable meal. Straightforward but not boring.
Good but noisy chop house
We had a slightly mixed dinner for a family birthday celebration. The staff rose to the challenge of reflecting the celebration with no notice so full marks for this.
The room being tiled made it very noisy and when a party of businessmen began to get raucous, conversation became somewhat difficult.
One of our party was served a steak that was utterly inedible and was returned and replaced promptly and effectively by the attentive staff. Mistakes do happen but that steak should ever have left the kitchen! Only the excellent reaction from the front-of-house staff rescued the rating oft he evening from disaster. The replacement steak was outstandingly good.
I would go back for the service and hope the food improved!
Great restaurant. Visited on a busy Friday lunchtime. Had the offer menu only two choices but good food. Would recommend
A lovely evening, friendly and attentive staff, blinding cocktails and great food. Looking forward to going back.
A great pre-Barbican supper at Hix last Thursday. Market menu was great value at £19.95. We enjoyed the tomato salad with sardine and horseradish. The Lyme Bay dab soles with herring milts and purslane were simply sensational. Nice relaxed post-work atmosphere and thoughtful, attentive service. All thoroughly good.
buzzy, relaxed, but very efficient
buzzy, relaxed, but very efficient --good feel, good service, good food
I had do be rolled home!
We came for our anniversary and had a blast of a good time!
Only thing I shouldn't had eaten so much! The stake tartar with the egg on top was delicious but it was far too hot that day for the beef flank and oyster pie! I never had it before and I loved it but couldn't possibly manage to eat it all! Which was a shame, because I had no space left for desert. And velive me that was a first!! I usually always have dessert! I guess I have to go back and make wiser food choices the next time!
And at last but not least the waiters were very welcoming and we felt very well looked after!
Having been to this restaurant
Having been to this restaurant a few times we gave up on it because of the poor (and somewhat snooty) service. We decided to give it another go this week and were pleasantly surprised. The service was friendly, helpful and delivered with humour; our order correct and served in good time. The food, as you would expect, was good, with plenty on the menu to entice. The restaurant was a little quiet, but it was early on a Monday evening. It has had a revamp since we were last there, which has improved the layout. All in all, a very pleasant experience - so much so that we will now try their jazz Sunday lunch.
Hix - excellent
The food at Hix is wonderful, yet again the fish fingers are simply amazing. Service isn't rushed, just attentive. Keep up the excellent work.
Great cocktails, pithy wine
Great cocktails, pithy wine list (with a few brillant value choices), excellent oysters and fantastic steak- all served up by friendly, knowldegable staff - a top dining experience
No 1 for SUnday lunch
So... Hix has jumped to the number one spot for best Sunday lunches (and I take my Sunday lunches very seriously). The food was excellent - flavoursome, well-presented, served at the right temperature... Wonderful! Wine also served at the correct temperature. Service warm, friendly and very accommodating. All topped off by some very pleasant music from a jazz duo - clarinet and guitar. Well done Hix - this is my idea of the perfect Sunday lunch. (And if you're a Barbican resident, it's great value!)
Very nice greeting when we
Very nice greeting when we arrived, nice table with lots of space, excellent food and a very nice waitress. Its bloody expensive, but that's London I suppose? Always liked this restaurant though and they have been consistently good for several years now which is an achievement.
Great food - disjointed service
The food at Hix Oyster and Chophouse was excellent. The Poole cockles were outstanding and the ribeye on the bone was cooked to perfection and the best I have ever tasted. Sadly, on the night we ate at Hix the service was disjointed and detracted from what should have been a relaxed informal business meeting. However, immediately the Manager Jamie became aware of the issues he put things right. I'll certainly return.
service was very good and friendly yet professional. my first time at one of the Hix group restaurants and will certainly be returning in the future
Very pleasing atmosphere and service at Hix Oyster and Chophouse. There were only two choices for each course in the 3 course lunch, but the Atlantic Prawn Cocktail and Lyme Bay Dab were first class. A good choice of ales before the meal plus a complimentary English sparkling wine and cherry liqueur cocktail whet the whistle. Good value for lunch.
Great for a late night dinner treat
We found ourselves hungry at 9pm on a Friday night and came across this dinner set deal deal at Hix Chophouse. Mark Hix's reputation precedes him so we jumped at the chance. The set menu is simple, limited to three choices for each coursel. These aren't huge, heaping plates of food but I didn't leave hungry.
The feel is of laid back French bistro, which I like. Our waiter was professional and relaxed but unlike the barely awake or attentive kind you usually find in Clerkenwell.
The Salmon Scotch Egg was both eggy and salmon-like, which is a very good combination indeed. The Monk Fish was moreish and the summer pudding was the right balance of summer and tartness.
Well done Mark, I'll be coming again soon.
Late night meal
We went for a the late night special (3 courses for 24 pounds I think). Nice food, decent portions, good service. Overall, nothing spectacular but a nice, good value meal.
Hix - great food, great value
Had the most amazing meal at Hix based on the best of seasonal food. Service was really great. At the end we had a small tipple of a cockatail as they knew we were regulars!
Meet and eat
Great restaurant - food, atmosphere and service was excellent. Perfect for dinner with friends or for a "business" meeting. No pressure to leave early - very relaxed.
Went there to celebrate a
Went there to celebrate a friend's birthday who is both dairy and glueten intolerant. The pork scratchings were the best I have ever had - not too salty, large pieces of crispy skin. Main courses were steak and the rib eye and rump were served exactly as ordered. Desserts were very limited for my friend :-)
Definitely would recommend for steak lovers and always start with the pork scratchings!!!
My only disappointment with
My only disappointment with Hix's was not having enough room in our bellies to be able to finish our meals. The starter of goat balls with parsnip puree and girolles is simply amazing. The goat just melts in your mouth. My partner's cobnut and butternut squash dish had a lovely taste of autumn. Both our main courses were delicious. I would certainly recommend the saddle of lamb which came with the added bonus of a smokey tasting kidney. I did feel rather envious of the pie being served on the adjacent table. My envy was however purely greed! I would absolutely recommend this restaurant. The venue is great, the restaurant has a funky vibe and most importantly the food is delicious. We will certainly visit again on any future trips to London.
We went to Hix Oyster and Chop House after acquiring their cook book and loving the philosophy. Ordinarily we would only go to a venue like this for a birthday but this time decided to go for a blow out Sunday lunch just for fun. What a great decision. The staff were fantastic, the atmosphere superb (discreet live jazz) and the food to die for.
Have a Hix Fix as an aperitif. Not cheap, but really sets the scene and just divine.
The menu is spot on - in-season, tasty and unpretentious. It speaks for itself. Just go - you won't be disappointed.
First time I'd been to Hix
First time I'd been to Hix and was pleasantly surprised. Menu isn't huge but still a decent and interesting range of options. All at our table thought the food was fist rate and would definitely return. Atmosphere in the restaurant was also good.
Hix Chop House
We had a very nice meal at Hix on a Thursday evening. The food was a bit different from usual which was good, the staff were friendly and I like the restaurant. Luckily we were not in a hurry as service from the kitchen is very slow - 3 hours for 2 courses!
Dinner on Friday night was
Dinner on Friday night was superb. The food was amazing, the service was good and our table of 5 (down from a booking of 6 but not a problem) had a really good time.
The only downside, and it wasn't but potentially could have been a big problem, was that part of our table was under a leaking roof. We had to move the table ourselves out of the leak and one of our party had to change seats. We were happy to do it, there was enough space and it all worked out. But other than a small acknowledgment from our waiter, there was no apology or attention from management.
Amazing food and service. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The food was so tasty and one of the best meals I've had. Would def go back.
Not just Oysters and Chops
Having been worried that the menu might be restricted I was delighted to find a good variety of delicious things on the menu. My guest and I chose the lunch menu (£19 for 2 courses, £24 for 3). My starter was smoked salmon Scotch Egg, an excellent invention with a golden-yolked, soft-boiled egg inside; my guest had whipped butternut squash with goats cheese and hazelnuts, served with hot flat bread. Mains were Megrim sole with potted shrimps and sausage with crushed herb potatoes, both very good. We looked longingly at the bramley pie but decided to forego it in the interest of our waistlines.
A great find!
A buzzing little restaurant just around the corner from Farringdon tube. Hix has a great menu and all of our party loved their choices - prawn cocktails, asparagus spears, pork chops, oysters and need and oyster pie were all superb.
Save room for the credit crunch ice-cream if it's still on the menu when you go - delicious!
Mains were a little slow arriving, but fortunately we weren't in a hurry - and the meal definitely filled us all up.
Great meet and lively atmosphere.
Great meet and lively atmosphere. Took clients to celebratory dinner and everyone left with a smile :-)
A small but very well sourced
A small but very well sourced menu. Loved the oysters and the chance to sample different types. Service good and waiting staff very attentive. Will definitely go again.
I took my father here for his 60th Birthday. We had an outstanding meal, oysters asa pre-start, amazing steak tatare to start, then hanger steak with marrow for main course. We had a beautiful bottle of wine, and the service was second to none. The staff even bought a plate of chocolate truffled with a hapy birthday message for my dad after our food. The only thing i could possibly fault about this meal is that the steak was over seasoned for me and was a bit too salty, as it had been the previous visit to a Hix restuarant, however, that is obviously a matter of personal preference. Would absolutely reccomend this restuarant to anyone.
We both had steamed cod with
We both had steamed cod with cockles and sea purslane, and the flavours came through the simple cooking, the cockles were sweet, the cod firm but succulent and the purslane ( a new taste to me) provided a salty contrast. I had a scrumptious steamed pudding with a sticky jam-like sauce of autumn berries, and very good custard,- light and a real trip down memory lane.
the food was definitely a cut above, and the service friendly. On a Sunday evening the ambience was a little flat.
Good cocktails and service!
really good cocktails, lovely oysters and professional service! The only thing that let the experience down slightly was the restaurant was uncomfortably hot and a bit too noisy.
Great for Sunday lunch
I think this must have been our third Sunday lunch at Hix and I am happy to report that the friendly service and excellent lunch is being consistently delivered. The jazz duo makes for a relaxed atmosphere. The food really is very good. It is not over fussy, so the quality of the ingredients makes all the difference. We shall go again!
Went to Hix with customers for lunch and we were not disappointed. Oysters followed by veal chop were extremely good; my guests chose the fillet steak "on the bone" the finest from Smithfield. Hix is a premium priced restaurant, but on this occasion, worth the money.
I brought my boyfriend here for his birthday and we had a fantastic night. Everything was excellent, we will certainly be going back and recommending to friends.
Pricey steaks but well worth
Pricey steaks but well worth it! Attentive service and good atmosphere!
Under good management
The service was a little dilatory, but the manager responded incredibly well when we mentioned this. Food was good. This place is a bit of a no-brainer if you are in the area as there are few places around it of this calibre.
Hix - the best of the picks!
Hix Oyster and Chop House in Farringdon is just so good - service is superb, food is fantastic, ambience is appealing.... I go again and again and they really appreciate your custom.
Oysters were lovely. Service was excellent. Was disappointed with main course. Thought it was all very overpriced.
Great food, great service
As expected dining at Hix was great, but as (also expected) a bit pricey. Overall great experience.
Aboslutely fabulous. The staff
Aboslutely fabulous. The staff were very attentive and the food was gorgeous. Have definitely been recommending it to all my friends. Just a shame I cant eat like that everyday.
Best Sunday roast I've had in London by quite some way. Cannot fault any part of my experience; cocktails, wine, service, food, ambience - all were above my expectations.
I am looking forward to coming back for an evening meal, and many more roasts
Great as Ever
I took my son here for a 21st birthday lunch having been many times on business. We were looked after by the team superbly who made the extra effort for the occasion. The food was as good as always - a treat for any seafood or meat lover.
Good meal at Hix. The starters (whipped beet, Partridge) were interesting and tasty. Our fish fingers (goujons really) were perfectly cooked and accompanied by perfect fries but the combination was a little dry overall. Some interesting wines, nice service. Not cheap but very good quality.
Always reliable and very welcoming.
This is a perfect business restaurant with an imaginative and interesting menu and excellent service. Non-meat eaters might find it a bit of a challenge!
Best Hanger steak...
Excellent food and service... The hanger steak is very delicious...
Good Food and Great Service
Liked everything - our waiter particularly so. Very easy going, helpful, there at all the right times and without arrogance as can often be the case these days. Food excellent. It wasn't a usy night but the ambience was good.
Top Billers Meeting
was good fun, nice ambience. Service was slow to start off with but gather pace later on. Food was delicious and excellent to receive a free bottle of port! Certainly coming back!
Nice and buzzy place for a business lunch. Good food and wine and great service!
