A fantastic country pub with top class Sunday lunch, far superior to the average pub fayre.Bein seated in the actual restaurant was a bonus as it is very cosy. Booking is advisable as it does get busy, but not so much so that it is an issue.
We keep coming back
One of our favourite restaurants in the Winchester area. Has the classic welcoming, quality English pub feel, good choice of ales, solid food and all nice setting.

A lovely dinner for special friends - relaxed atmosphere, lovely wines and food, perfect service. Highly recommend.

wonderful oldey worldy traditional pub
The food has never let us down and even if empty would still be a lovely pub to eat in
Lovely Christmas lunch
The food was delicious , all the courses were excellent , the deserts were really nice and overall the atmoshere and the service were excellent.!! We cannot really find anything bad to say. I am looking forward to eat again the Medallions of Beef Fillet, with Wild Mushroom and Whisky Cream Sauce and Anna Potatoes!! Thank you Chestnut Horse for this lovely day - meal !!!
New Year new restaurant
Overall the dining experience was very good, the restaurant is delightful and the meal both reasonable and extremely good. This was our first visit and we will definitely return, probably in the near future. Unfortunately the next table had a very young child who liked the sound of his own voice, and whose parents did not seem to worry that this might disturb other diners, but for this the restaurant cannot be blamed, these things happen.
Great lunch yet again
Thank you for being so efficient and making out "lunch break" lunch efficient yet relaxed and getting us all fed and back to work in good time. Our meals were wonderful and the staff were friendly and helpful, as always. We will be back very soon. Thanks again.
Wish this pub was in our village!
Friendly, professional staff. Interesting and inventive menu (without being weird); large portions (unfortunately no space for dessert) and excellent wines. Very popular - even on a snowy Sunday lunchtime in January, all tables were full. We will be back!
Thoroughly enjoyed our experience from the moment we stepped in the door - it was super busy but the service was excellent and the food even better
Special place to eat
We found this pub via Tabletop and the booking was easy and reliable. We loved the atmosphere, the service and food were great. It is now one of our favorite places to eat for special occasions.
Lunch at The Chestnut Horse
We arrange to meet two friends for lunch. This was our first visit on recommendation and we were very please with the experience with the exception of - we ordered two meals that had vegetables served seperately and the second person did not receive the vegetables until they had almost finished the meal. Not good. Otherwise a very good experience.
Family meal out
Enjoyed a lovely family meal out. Cosy, traditional English pub. Friendly, unrushed service. Relaxed atmosphere with good choice of food, nicely presented and tasty.
Great eating place
I and my friends have been using the chestnut horse for quite a while. we have never been dissapointed. and Karen (proprietor mine host!!0 has always been friendly, helpful, and good looking too! what more couldyou want.
The Chestnut Horse was very welcoming on a bitterly cold day with its warm fire and cosy appearance.
The service was fast and professional.
The sea bream was the best I have tasted.
Our family were visiting from Majorca and we treated them to lunch at the Chestnut Horse. Excellent food and service, we shall certainly go there again - even if just on our own !
Great night out
After finding the right door to enter from one of four possibles we enjoyed a lovely warm welcome in a very warm friendly establishment.Meal was excellent and only slight complaint that one of the mains was slightly cold.Excellent food enjoyed by all. Will definitely return probably when weather is better as dining outside will be possible.

Six of us met for lunch. The service and food were outstanding, we were welcomed and looked after very well.
Great food after a long wait
The food was fantastic as was the wine. But... even though we booked a table online for 2pm we had to wait for 30 mins while they waited for our table to become free. They told us the online booking system was new and it didn't seem as though they were quite ready for it. I'd probably phone up next time to make sure our table was secured. Hopefully this will change in the future.
Really enjoyed our meal. Lovely staff. Would definitely recommend The Chestnut Horse to family and friends.
Great staff, food, drink and surroundings. Dog friendly! Perfect.
Lunch for three
We enjoyed a lovely lunch, our steak was cooked just right. The restaurant was obviously very popular and rightly so. A lovely atmosphere in the restaurant and the staff were very pleasant.
Atmospheric English Pub
Excellent value, good quality. Food exceeds expectations, and much better than the average pub grub. Nice atmosphere, quiet English country pub. What's not to recommend?!
Thanks for a great dinner. Love the Chestnut Horse.
lunch break on way to Dorset
A group of 8 of us in 4 cars met up in the pub for lunch on the way to a weekend away in Dorset. The food and service was excellent and it is a lovelly pub. We called in again on the way back home for Sunday roast lamb and were not disappointed.
This is a favourite place of ours and it never fails to please. We had lunch on a Monday and found it excellent. You are treated with a friendly hello and soon settled in and the food is good and quite outstanding for a small country pub.
We will certainly be going again...and again.
Lunch on Wednesday
A jewel in the countryside, Food was absolutely superb, excellent service and friendly, helpful staff
Great patio dining
Super outdoor seating since we last used this pub. Food was almost excellent - hollandaise sauce had no tang and tasted rather like warm mayonnaise although the fish was beautifully cooked, crispy skin and succulent flesh. The gnocchi was superb. However our pinot grigio was significantly too warm. We will use again!
My father in law and I both had the massive fish followed by strawberries and cream absolutely delicious. The waitress although young must have been a fishermen, as when she described the fish her arms were much wider than the fish just as well.
Wonderful, all round
Great location, service and food/drink. Thoroughly recommended.
I don't usually write reviews however the food and service was outstanding and the pub has made a real effort with its garden which really made it feel special. Thank you
Had a lovely meal here with a brilliant menu and well cooked food. The staff were extremely good and we were well looked after throughout the visit. We were able to take our dog into the bar area which was great as it was raining outside, but we we're given a lovely table and the many teapots and tumblers were a good topic of conversation! Thanks for a great meal.
the chestnut horse
this well run country pub does an excellent fixed price lunch and on a fine day the patio is great for eating outside. Service is good and food consistently good also.
Excellent evening - perfect
Excellent evening - perfect for my birthday celebration in the large private room.
The food was delicious, the wine and beers excellent and the ambience great. A good range of food and drinks with some unusual touches. We started off in the garden with a drink and then went inside for the meal. It was perfect.
What really makes it is that the staff are so very enthusiastic and really seem to enjoy serving you.
Great place - will definitely go again.
The staff were friendly and
The staff were friendly and accommodating and food great value. Ate off the 2 courses for £12 menu and apart from salmon having been sold out xcellent choice and value.
Great food, great atmosphere, fantastic service and excellent value for money given the quality of the food.
Open fires on a cold evening
After wandering around Winchester on a cold November evening the warm welcome received at the Chestnut Horse was matched only by the warmth of the open fires burning in the restaurant area. The selection and presentation of food was excellent and the team are always eager to please. I will be returning again as soon as the opportunity arises.
Have used the Chestnut Horse
Have used the Chestnut Horse many times, especially in the Summer when we like to sit outside. Food always good and staff always helpful, peasant and efficient.
Whole Camembert starter was
Whole Camembert starter was outstanding but only for a big appetite.
Venison main was extremely good but the vegetables were extremely sparse. Just one small dish between 2.
Blackberry panacotte for dessert was a delightful finish to the meal.
3 courses for 2 people plus wine = £80
Overall, a very nice evening meal
Brought good friends for lunch on Sunday. Food presentation was lovely and clean, tasted so good! Staff were so friendly and welcoming without intruding. Good balance! Look forward to our next meal there!
