Our party of 4 had the pleasure of dining at this establishment after the Scotland vs Wales 6 Nations match. Given that the restaurant was busy one might think service would slip a little, not here. The service was prompt without being hurried, the food was exquite and the staff friendly, helpful and very personable.
A hidden treasure
Simple menu but really good dining experience, very friendly service - give it a try
A Mother's Day Treat
We have eaten at the Cellar Door several times. The quality of food and value are very good though the service was a tad slow on this occasion. Really enjoyable meal. Will return.
A pleasant experience in the city
This was a delightful find in the City. Excellent value for money and a great range of food options available on the menu. Service was excellent and staff are very friendly and helpful. A good range of wine available but house wine was lovely and smooth! Would definitely recommend this restaurant to my friends and others to try. Worth a wee walk to go to!
Very good experience.
The restaurant is nicely decorated, the service is very prompt and professional. The food was good as well and the pricing is right.
Great Anniversary Lunch
My wife and I went here for lunch for our 18th wedding anniversary. Food and Service were very good indeed and the bill was excellent value.
Ask for a surprise!
Had dinner here recently with friends and although perplexed by the top entrance which was a new experience for me, the downstairs dining room was cosy. Good quality food and wine and really good value for all three courses. One of us even braved the surprise starter and he was very pleased with that. Wished we had explored that option more. Maybe next time!
Cellar Door Lunch
Really good value and enjoyable lunch on Good Friday. Restaurant was surprisingly quiet which suited us since we needed to return to work after lunch - food arrived quickly and we had time to spare. My haggis bon bon starter was very tasty and my pulled pork main equally so. Companion had soup of the day (creamed parsnip) and a burger and was very satisfied with his choices. Service friendly and prompt. Good value at two courses for £10. Delighted to say that The Cellar Door is halfway between our work places at the moment. 'Can see a Friday lunch meeting happening again soon!
Nice steak and chips and attentive service, Used the 20% off food which was valuable. Also good gluten free ammendments available.
Lovely food ...
From the outside, you wouldn't know about the quality of the food served and the uniqueness of the restaurant.
The food and wine were of a very high standard, and would put a lot of Edinburgh's top end restaurant's to the test.
The quality of the ingrediants was very good, and my steak melted like butter, and my girlfriends couldn't stop smiling while eating her Pear and blue chesse starter ...
My only slight issue was with my starter, Scallops and tempura cauliflower ... the cauliflower was hard - e.g. raw, but apart from that - a very lovely evening was had.
We both are looking forward to visiting "The Cellar Door" again, and hopefully soon!
I visited The cellar Door on Friday evening with a small group of friends and we had a really lovely evening.
None of us had starters but we all had mains and desserts which were delicious! I had the free range chicken
with fondant potato and black pudding followed by a poached pear cheesecake which was lovely and light.
The staff were all nice and it had a lovely atmosphere with delicious food. We all said we would definitely come back soon.
Lovely night out with our older kids, great food, nice surroundings, friendly staff, lovely food. Little bit pricier than anticipated but wont stop me going back!
Cellar Door on Saturday evening prior to the theatre was excellent. Good range of food, excellent staff and would recommend. Please do not be put off by the frontage of the property as the main restaurant is downstairs and has plenty of ambiance, but looking through the window upstairs there is no charm and appeal and the tables sit empty. Restaurant really does not to address this issue as a number of people we spoke to were certainly put off with first impressions.
The Cellar Door, Edinburgh
Central location with quirky decor. Food was excellent the only slight disappointments were the overpriced scallop starter at £9 for three scallops and that the 20% off food did not include the dessert! My boyfriend and I ate there on Tuesday night and unfortunately the restaurant was empty apart from us. This in no way spoilt our meal as it is a cosy layout but the restaurant warrants more customers. We would certainly recommend it and will return when we visit Edinburgh again.
Food, wine and service really good. Food fresh and enough variety so something for everyone, vegetarian or not. Open and ready at 5pm which is great for straight from work. Stairs down as name perhaps suggest, although couple of tables upstairs, but you would miss 'cellar' atmosphere which was relaxed. Would recommend without hesitation.
Have been before and pleased
Have been before and pleased to say just as good as ever.
great dishes, flavours,and cooking
Interesting contents to the dishes and cooked beautifully. Service friendly and decent wine list too. Good value pricing. Couldn't fault meal.
Lovely little Find!
We looked in Top Table whilst visitng Edinburgh and we're not disappointed with the Cellar Door, the food was good. I strongly recommend the Scallop starter! My partner thoroughly enjoyed his food and if you are feeling adventurous the offer a 'Surprise Menu' where you dont know what your getting until the plate turns up!
Lovely place for a evening meal.
My Husband booked this as a birthday treat. We were up visiting Edinburgh as I ran the marathon the day before. The restaurant is hidden away so you'd have to know about it to find it. The meal was beautifully presented and very tasty. The staff were friendly and very happy. The atmosphere was very romantic. We booked online to qualify for a discount off our main meal and although the staff did not have this they honoured the discount. If I came to Edinburgh again I'd definately come again.
Cellar Door experience
We booked a meal at the Cellar Door for Wednesday, 29th May for five people. Both the food and the service were very good. Two of our company went for the 'surprise' course on the menu and were delighted with their choice. The staff were very friendly and made our experience all the more enjoyable.
This was a last minute booked meal as our original restaurant was closed for refurbishment. The food was excellent as was the service. Nothing was too much for them at all. Definitely worth a visit and will be going back again when family and friends come to visit.
A real find
An underground gem in the centre of town, wonderful friendly service, good menu selections with really tasty options. Good wine list, unpretentious friendly ambience. I will definitely go again
The service was incredible and we could not have had a more friendly or welcoming experience. The food was excellent and we would definitely return.
Excellent food and attentive service. The restaurant has only just re-opened for Sunday lunch and was therefore quite empty. Nevertheless this did not detract from a friendly service and lovely food.
Well worth a visit. Both my wife and two kids (11 and 15) really enjoyed a really relaxing lunch with great food.
What a little gem The Cellar door is!
The staff are amazing, the food fantastic.
The staff on duty couldn't do enough for us, and helped with bringing my pram downstairs.
I had haggis parcels, then fish and chips, both for £10! The food was plentiful and delicious.
I cannot recommenced this place enough :0)
Lovely lunch and great value
I booked The Cellar Door for lunch with friends and we had a lovely time. The set lunch for £10 had choices even for our vegetarian friends, and the food was outstanding for the price. It looked great and was of a quality I might associate with paying far more. The service was very friendly. It was perhaps a little slow at times, but we weren't in a hurry so that was fine on this occasion.
We decided to try The Cellar Door and it was a very nice find. The staff were lovely and attentive. The food was excellent and .the wine very reasonable. I would definitely recommend and will be back. Thank-you Toptable.
The food was delicious. We
The food was delicious. We had our first try of haggis and black pudding at the Cellar Door and thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff were extraordinarily friendly and competent.
Late lunch at Cellar Door
Booked the Cellar Door for a late lunch (4.15) as this was very convenient for the National Museum where we were visiting at 6.00pm. The lunch offer was good value and very nice choice available. The waitress was exceptionally nice and helpful.
Not cheap but very good
Starters were good. Steaks were very good. Service good. 3 Amigos wine recommended. £65 a head for three of us a little expensive. It's in a basement but was still hot (during the hot spell).
We had a lovely meal, the restaurant was lovely, food wonderful, staff great. It was a perfect end to a wonderful stay in Edinburgh - I would definitely recommend this lovely place to anyone
This restaurant shows Scotland's food and hospitality at their best. Service was leisurely but efficient with guests not being pressured. Staff well mannered and unobtrusive. Menu was suitable for all tastes and pockets and the food excellent. I will definitely be back.
Can't fault this restaurant at all. Very friendly staff, great food, ( loved the super food salad) and stunned at reasonable prices for a restaurant in central Edinburgh. The vegetarian choices were delicious. I've eaten in many restaurants where the best they can come up with is spicy pasta!! We had early dinner here before going to Runrig concert at Castle Esplanade, after staff learned this they put on Runrig for us. Looking forward to next visit.
Doesnt look much from outside but down stairs , nice clean well decorated , clean toilets ,
Food was to die for , excellant well presented , staff so friendly and helpfull
Dinner in the Cellar
Good locally supplied Scottish fare served by very charming staff although very busy on a Saturday evening during the Festival.
What to do before the Tatoo
dine and rhyme - to wax lyrical would not be enough for this understated we gem of a restaurant!! A great start to the evening!!
Worth finding this Edinburgh gem
This was our first visit to the Cellar Door and it won't be our last. Tucked in on Edinburgh's George IV Bridge, the restaurant provides a good range of food in a pleasant- if noisy at times- environment. Food was well presented and menu was nicely varied.
it. was a Saturday night
I went to the Cellar Door with my Wife to celebrate her Birthday. It was our first time at this restaurant and we will return. The food was tasty and plentiful and although it was very busy (we were in the middle of the festival period) there wasn't too much time between courses. We also found the prices to be reasonable.
A find for foodies!
Limited but sufficiently varied menu. I can recommend the steak and the veggie option was excellent.
Service was excellent... Special thanks to Leah who looked after us so well.
Well worth a visit.
Doesn't look much from the outside, just a small entrance but down the steps to a cosy room. Cannot fault the steak and the chips were perfect The staff were friendly and the service was prompt.
Good choice of gluten free courses
Thoroughly enjoyed our anniversary dinner.
Fist time we had visited in the evening. Good friendly service.
Quality over quantity
Lovely little restraunt, very friendly staff, the food was very nice however the portions were quite small especially the mains which to be fair are not the cheapest.
I would recommend going here but prepare to be hungry later on!
Very nice food
A very nice pre-theatre meal. Fillet steak was delicious as was the special blade of beef. Nice place.
Trip to Edinburgh
Booked for an evening meal and the hospitality from the staff was first class. They had a new chef and the choices were superb for us. Starters were really good. Wood pigeon and scallops with kedgeree. Mains were just as appetising, the chicken ballotine was really good and the jus was superb. The slow cooked blade of beef just melted in the mouth, again the jus was superb. For a bistro I would say that the quality of food was not far off fine dining. Of course we had to finish with a dessert!! Raspberry cranacan cheesecake was lovely. The boozy berry chocolate mousse was sublime. Well done to all staff you deserve to do really well. We would highly recommend this restaurant .
the friendliest culinary experience
With a very friendly reception we've experienced some great dining. From a juicy and tastefull steak to original deer on a bed of red cabbage. Really exactly the way they should be. Top modern scottish!
After reading the reviews
After reading the reviews I found this restaurant to be exactly as expected. It was small, intimate, friendly and very inviting. The food and wine were delicious and we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
excellent value on the set
excellent value on the set menu..
nice cosy atmosphere and friendly staff
will come again
Made to feel very welcome.
Made to feel very welcome. The service was very cheerful and quick with a friendly smiling waitress. The food was packed with flavour from starter to dessert. Recommend highly and will be back.
Table for 10
I booked a table for 10 people a few days before we needed to eat. The restaurant texted me on the day asking if we were still attending at7pm and how they were looking forward to meeting us.i confirmed. On arrival a table for 10 was waiting for us even though the restaurant was busy
the ambiance, menu and choice was excellent
having ordered from our allocated waiter who attended to us all evening we were not disappointed with the food which was excellent. We all said that we would go back and would recommend the Cellar Door to any adult diners.
An excellent restaurant for an intimate meal with your loved one, the food and service was of a good standard and being near to the High Street made it and an excellent location to walk off the meal afterwards.
