Good quality food and presentation. Many dishes came with a few wafer thin crispy bread to go with pate. Not enough toast balance pâté. Would also have liked a bread basket at least as an option with the meal. Waitress was a little slow and confused with orders although granted it was busy. Meal also a little spoiled as in close proximity to other diners and couple next to us were at times arguing and found it hard to hear and concentrate on our table.
We had a very good table overlooking the main area of the restaurant, which was very busy and lively with a birthday party when we arrived. Our food was delicious - mixed hors d'oeuvres for two was a generous wooden platter of meat fish and vegetable dishes. We followed with roast cod which came with tabbouleh and spinach. We added green beans and frites (not really necessary but very good nevertheless). The wine, a muscadet was good and very reasonably priced. Service was friendly and efficient but not intrusive. Too full for pudding we finished with two double espressos - a very good evening.
This restaurant certainly deserves visiting. The set menu is good value and the staff friendly.
The food was delicious and of high quality. Enjoyed immensely.

Have been several times, and always enjoy the food and service is excellent.
A local gem
We were very glad to discover this restaurant within a short distance of our house. The food is clearly sourced from good quality ingredients. The wine list is interesting and well priced. The service is French but trying hard (having our French waiter ineptly try to discuss the weather with us in English fashion was charming). We will definitely return.
another great meal
Full marks again. Service not quite as good as usual but they.were exceptionally busy . The rice pudding dessert very tasty & large enough to share.
Best vegetarian friendly French!
My husband and I ate at this restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The food was superb and I was amazed to actually have a choice of three main vegetarian dishes for my main course - virtually unheard of in a French restaurant! The meringue desert was incredible. We will definitely be back!
Fantastic reasonably priced food
Ate with four friends on a Monday - we booked, which turned out to be a good thing as the place was pretty full for a Monday night. We had the 3 course fixed price menu and, with a bottle of wine and teas/coffees as extras, only paid £20.50 for a fabulous French meal. The cold Kohlrabi soup was wonderfully flavoured, the steak in peppercorn sauce with chips was nice, and the chocolate tart was A* - rich but not sickly. Really glad to have this place so close to home.
Good value for money lunch
Good value for money lunch menu. Would like bread to e offered.
This is a fine french restaurant
Not many of em exist in the well heeled part of east london
real french people work in there
a real rose amongst the thorns
My fiancé and I went for dinner here on Saturday 24th August and had a lovely evening. From the minute we walked in the service was fantastic and there was a great atmosphere throughout the restaurant. Although the restaurant is small it was nice to see they didn't cram tables in and there was plenty of space between everyone, you definitely need to book if you want to eat here (which is always a good sign). I had the smoked prawns to start which were amazing and very different my partner had the fresh baked bread which was also very nice. The portions are very generous and we will definitely be back. Thanks for a lovely evening.
Very good service accompanied
Very good service accompanied by great food. A bit pricey but the food is worth it.
Fantastic food, comfortable
Fantastic food, comfortable atmosphere and French food that satisfies the parents!
Excellent - highly recommend
Went there for a birthday dinner last Saturday and our first visit. The food was excellent - quality French ingredients and very fresh. Also extremely resonably priced and the wine list was fab.
The ambience was also lovely - one of what feels like a very few places in London where you can actually HEAR yourself talk.
Rate it highly and will be going back.
As always provender provides
As always provender provides a fantastic dining experience and is very local to us. Highly recommend it
I booked this restaurant because it was near where a first date lived and she could walk there. Good reviews and I liked the look of the menu. We had a large plate of Hors D 'Oevres, which was really tasty and we lingered over it whilst drinking a carafe (500 ml) of good basic Loire wine. I had Duck with an excellent Daughinois and my date had a fantastic Fillet steak - cooked perfectly. Waiting staff were casual and attentive - exactly the right combination. Another carafe of red and we had had a great date. Romance soon followed...5*!! £90 for two was a bit steep but it was good value nonetheless.
I eat at Provender regularly but hadn't been for almost two months, as the last couple of times I'd been things just hadnt been as good, both in terms of food and service. i needn't have worried, I have my favourite local restaurant back and on top form too! Christophe, who I hadn't seen the last few times I'd been, was in charge. Everything ran like clockwork, the food was fantastic, the service just the right level of attentive. Everything that made it great in the first place. We're very lucky to have this great restaurant on our doorstep.
Excellent food and impeccable service from junior staff. Senior staff reminiscent of Paris restaurants. Vegetarian main meal choices limited to Feuilletee or the inevitable risotto. Side vegetables either spinach or green beans. Although the meal was wonderful, the lack of vegetarian choice would put me off attending regularly.
Very easy to book on line and on arrival the greeter found the booking within seconds. Shown to a good table, service was very good, not in your face and we were left to chat for a reasonable amount of time.
Food was far better than I expected in fact brilliant.
Please go, you will be not disappointed.
It was a Saturday night when we went to Provender and they were very busy. We were a group of 8 and had booked a table, but had to wait for around 15 minutes before we could be seated. Service was very slow to begin with as they were busy, but was friendly throughout the evening. The food was excellent - every bit as rich and delicious as you would hope for from a good quality French restaurant.
the provender is the best french resturant in london
easy to travel too
very nice food & having a french wife she felt at home & would eat there everyday if she could
I had found this restaurant on line and checked out the reviews which had influenced my decision to book here. We arrived slightly late on the day but were welcomed and seated without issue. The service was amazing, just right, not too overbearing but we didn't have to summon anyone either. The menus were comprehensive and varied with an excellent French flavour. The portion sizes were ample and everyone enjoyed the meals they were presented with.
We had a leisurely dinner and over 2 1/2 hours later left after having an excellent meal with great service.
I would sincerely recommend this restaurant again and will be booking again in the near future.
Very relaxed and cosy. Good
Very relaxed and cosy. Good service and food. Lamb was excellent. I would prefer a bit more flavor in a duck. Good choice of the starters. We will be coming back in the future.
excellent prodcuce, starters, mains that inspired and service that very professiona yet friendly. Great wine list. Very impressive overall - one of my top choices from 2013 so far. Worth the trip out there,
well worth a trip east-merci!
a great bistro vibe with warm, helpful, and friendly service, great prix fixe options and house wine, excellent aperitif and even better quality ingredients prepared well! The artisanal shell on prawns demand to have every part of them eaten (such flavour rich heads!), and I was in fromage heaven at the cheese course. The grape jelly that came with it an unexpected but very refreshing element that worked fabulously. Thank you to all involved, despite living in central North London we’ll be sure to make the trip again!
Third visit to provender and
Third visit to provender and always fabulous food. Far and away the best food in east London
Can't go wrong
Superb food. Fantastic staff. Best local restaurant. We'll be back again soon!
Great choice for a speical occasion
We have been meaning to try this restaurant for some time having heard such good things about it, and weren't disappointed. The food was delicious and the service very friendly and attentive.
A choice of three veggie main options was quite impressive (and unusual for a french restaurant), and the portions were plenty big enough, so that you didn't necessarily need to order side dishes, which can often make dining out expensive.
We would certainly go again for a special occasion.
Superb dining experience
Amazing food and top service, this is a buzzing local restaurant and real gem of the high street
Been a few times of late with
Been a few times of late with my family, and it has been reliably good. Quality wine list and something to satisfy all budgets. Will be going back again soon.
Very accessible in every way
I met a friend for a midweek catch up. We wanted somewhere with good food at a reasonable price where we could hear ourselves think and talk. Provender ticked all those boxes . The French menu is varied and prix fixe menu is fair value. Service was very good and the owner friendly. We were made to feel welcome with no sense of being hurried. There is a good reason why Provender is popular
A nice surprise
Although living just down the road, we had so far resisted Provender as we thought it looked a bit expensive for our budget. However, a birthday came and we bit the bullet. We should have gone sooner; the staff were super-attentive, even though we mucked them about with our arrival time, and, sticking to the set menu, we found the food extremely enjoyable. With drinks, the bill for four came to less than £100, which was extraordinary value. We will definitely be going again.
Great local restaurant, always a good experience. Great choice of food and wines, great atmosphere.
Definately worth a visit
Have been here many times. Their set lunch menu is amazing value for money. All the starters and mains on the set menu are fab. Have also eaten off the a la carte menu and the food was delicious. Would thoroughly recommend this restaurant .
Value for money.
We had an excellent meal. Service was pleasant although rather slow. The wait between 1st and 2nd course was more than 30mins. There was, as mitigating circumstance, a large group of about 20 people to be served at the same time.
All in all I would definitely return.
Another excellent meal
We feel very lucky to have such a restaurant in our local area. The food is always good as is the service. The wine list always has new things to explore.
We visited Provender on Saturday after it was recommended by friends. We were impressed.
The food was delicious, really tasty and the portions generous. Could not fault it.
great food.. service a little stiff
Would definitely go again due to the food. We just gound the staff unfriendly. Attentive but without a smile. We hope they can change that
Grand dinner out
Excellent meal, great service. Only thing portions are soo big I couldn't indulge in what looked like some delicious desserts!
I have been to this restaurant before both for lunch with my daughter and also to meet up with friends for dinner. This time I was meeting up with friends and with family for dinner, including my very young granddaughter (two months old). We were welcomed and did not feel like outcasts as happens in some restaurants. The food was delicious and very good value; add to that brilliant atmosphere - what could be better. Yes, of course we will be returning
Great eve at Provender
Having such a great restaurant within walking distance is such a bonus.
Provender is a gem in Wanstead High Street, Good food very reasonably priced, well designed interior and with friendly helpful staff.
Great meal, nice to have decent
Great meal, nice to have decent service in a London high street
Good food, average service
Really enjoyed eating here. Nice menu, with the set menu in particular being very good value. The food was also delicious. However... The service was surprisingly poor. Staff appeared quiet and grumpy, putting meals out in front of people without checking it was theirs (and getting it wrong). Equally collecting plates before people on the table were finished eating and not enquiring whether everything was ok during the meal.
Some may read this and think they're small things but for the type of restaurant and the cost we were unfortunately disappointed with the service. Very easy to fix though and the food was great.
Food good but not outstanding.Porti
Food good but not outstanding.Portions on the small side. Excellent service. Slightly overpriced
I am taken to a number of very nice restaurants through my job, but this was genuinely one of the nicest meals I have had in years. The food was excellent and the staff very attentive, without being intrusive.
Excellent, home cooked Sunday Lunch in a lovely cosy very busy atmosphere. I particularly liked the extra gravy that is brought to the table unasked when you are served. One always wishes there was more gravy so this is a brilliant touch.
Provender for dinner
We ate at provender on 3/12/13 and had the reasonably priced set menu. Food, wine and service were all excellent. Will definitely return.
Had a lovely brunch with a friend here on Saturday, food and service was excellent, lovely feel about the place.
Friendly, busy, good food
Saturday lunchtime was very busy, with a number of very noisy children. The food was very good, although the main course did take a long time to arrive. Service was very friendly and attentive, but not overpowering.
