Pre theatre experience
4 of us ate prior to the theatre the service was excellent wines were good and the food was very good and excellent value for money. especially the smoked haddock and poached egg risotto. Well done.
Excellent food and service
We booked Essence following reviews and we were not disappointed. The service was excellent from the moment we entered, food and drinks were recommended and the service was courteous but not over the top. The decor is lovely and what was even better was the deal for set menus (1, 2 or 3 courses), which made the food excellent value for money. The food itself was amazing, good size portions and unusual dishes, but all cooked to perfection and very tasty. Would go again when next in the area.
Extremely good service. The
Extremely good service. The waiters were friendly and helpful. The food was beautifully presented and the vegetables fresh and perfectly cooked. We shall definitely be dining there again
Brilliant restaurant went with partner whom had a brilliant time. Staff are superb and attentive with fantastic food.
This was our first visit to Essence, the excellent service starts the minute you step through the door and continued. Excellent value for money, great food and good spacing between tables to allow for conversation. Well done Essence.
Very good vaulue for money
we had the fix price menu - sometimes with these fix price menus you feel you are getting smaller potion than on the main menu but this was not the case at Essence we had decent potions and a bowl of vegetables as well! The service was very good attentive without being over the top. All in all very good food, good value and good service what more could you want!
First Class in ALL aspects
We booked this restaurant for Brian's 70th Birthday which was actually on Saturday 9th April. I had e-mailed ahead and requested a nice romantic table for 2 as it was a special occasion. When we arrived we were greeted by Manager Paul; and his staff who took us to a lovely corner table where a Birthday Card was waiting for Brian. From that moment on the service, attention, food, wine etc etc were all PERFECTION. I cannot tell you just how professional and friendly all the staff were. I chose it as I found it on the internet to be the No 2 best restaurant in Stratford and I can honestly say it should obviously be at the top - No 1 !!!!!! Compliments MUST go to Chris the owner/chef, Manager Paul and all the young staff were superb.
Great Sunday lunch. Crispy whitebait, succulent roast pork ( the beef also looked fantastic) and a warm, sticky brownie with ice cream for pudding. Excellent and friendly service. Well done Chris and team - another triumph!
Had early evening meal for two, which we were able to book on line via smart phone which was very impressive. Nice warm welcome and staff very informative about food on menu. Had 2 course set menu which was excellent value for money. Fishcake for me and kidneys for my husband for starters, both which were delicious. I ordered lambs liver with mash which was very tasty (although mash a bit sweet for me) and husband order shoulder of lamb. Had thought that lamb would arrive as small joint, but was in fact in small casserole pot as a stew, however, was very delicious. Too full for pudding. Staff were very attentive and friendly and nice atmosphere. Would visit again and recommend to others.
Lovely restaurant with great food, perfectly cooked and friendly professional service. Highly recommend the set menu.
Stratford's best kept secret!
I went to Essence with my mother and aunt for her birthday, having never heard of the restaraunt before, and was blown away that a beautiful town such as Stratford-Upon-Avon had such a wonderful restaraunt tucked away just off the high street. We went on a wintry/spring Wednesday lunchtime, and not only was the waiter attentive and helpful, but was charming and amiable. The food was cooked to perfection and the venue itself was just the right mix of quirky and classy!
lovely friendly restaurant
very friendly staff- food excellent- lovely relaxed restaurant- was booked for my husband's birthday and the staff got him a birthday card - lovely touch.
We were dining early pre-theatre and so the restaurant was pretty quiet, but the waiter was excellent - very knowledgable regarding the wines and genuinely enthusiastic about the food. Would highly recommend!
Good basic food done well
We had a good lunch here over Easter. The place was busy and I can see why as it is really good value for money. I had the mushroom risotto which was lovely followed by fish and chips also nice. Our son had sausage and mash which was a huge portion and he liked it. Followed by lovely ice cream. Husband had the salad cheese starter - a bit disappointing followed by liver which he liked. Service was good.
Lovely food, slightly chaotic but alot of fun, would recommend a visit , great host, great value too
Lovely restaurant, great service
Tucked away but worth seeking out. Very personal and genuine service, recommended on trip advisor and booked and was very happy with choice. Very good with children, we didn't bring ours but others did and they were very attentive.
Booked following online review,
Booked following online review, visiting Stratford for our anniversary. Had a lovely evening, staff very welcoming and knowledgeable of their food. Good wine list, and interesting choice on the menu for all three courses. Food was delicious, great balance of flavours, presented well and tasted delicious. Wish we lived nearer to enjoy more often!!
Great pre theatre venue
The welcome and attention we got was second to none and the food also top rate. The menu is not too long but is great value with starters in the £4 - £6 region, mains £8 - £12 and deserts £4 - £7. there is also a decent wine list with several good wines by the glass. (Good when you want red and the wife wants white!).
Apparently all of their ice cream is home made and you really can taste the difference.
In summary - recommended!
This restaurant was selected because of the condensed but diverse menu which unusually met the requirements of both a vegetarian and non vegetable eating diner who required more traditional English fare. The menu appeased both and they were also happy to further refine dishes on request to suit their individual requirements.
Service was good and knowledgable in respect of both food and wine. Feedback sought with the genuinely sole criticism addressed after consultation - with a considered and acceptable response.
Due consideration was also given to diners with pre-theatre time constraints with a light touch to prompt diners accordingly and elicit choices when necessary.
Lastly.. food was great and enjoyed by this difficult party!
Excellent as always
This is my third visit to Essence in Stratford. That is a compliment in itself.
All food and service was excellent as usual. especially the kidney starter and pork main.
Only a few very minor little disappointing items this time. No starter on the market menu (but plenty of choice on the regular menu) and my crème brulee was firmer than I like. Restaurant was packed though and staff were friendly and helpful throughout. There was no diabetic dessert available for my mother but they said if we let them know beforehand they are happy to sort something next time. This is perfectly reasonable in my mind.
Will still come again. Best Restaurant in Stratford.
good food, atmosphere, service
had a late sunday lunch. nice food, good service, reasonable price
Superb Sunday Lunch
We came for Sunday Lunch with our daughter, the staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive. The starters came swiftly and were excellent, we had the mushroom risotto and mushroom and lentil soup. We had roast beef and roast chicken for our mains, both were lovely, although in retrospect it might have been a nice touch if we'd been asked how we'd like the beef as it could have been a smidgen rarer, but otherwise it was a great quality, tasty cut of beef and the potatoes and veg were lovely. Dessert was lovely, we wouldn't normally have one but our daughter woke for her dinner so we had chocolate brownie and sticky toffee pudding, both nicely presented and tasted fantastic! Had a very good meal, thank you :-)
Wonderful Sunday Lunch - large
Wonderful Sunday Lunch - large portions of quality food with excellent service. Do not think twice to visit it is an enjoyable experience.
Good food at reasonable price
Service good if a little gushing at times. Food excellent and very good value for Stratford.
A good meal, above average service
This was on a Saturday evening before the theatre. I booked online and was called by the management a couple of days later to suggest that we arrived a little earlier. This was unusual, much appreciated and turned out to be very sensible. The scallop starter was excellent, cooked to perfection and the belly pork slice crisp. A main course of lamb's liver was again perfectly cooked and the side dish of vegetables was nicely crunchy. My slow-cooked lamb with roasted root vegetables was fine, though quite heavy on the carrots. We shared some home-made icecream for pudding - vanilla, chocolate and maple. The vanilla was the best, we found the maple flavour wasn't quite pronounced enough, and the chocolate was very milky. But we would go again.
We had a great meal, great atmosphere and really friendly an attentive staff.
Would recommend essence to anyone including the most discerning restaurant goers.
Have eaten in many Michelin star restaurants and this wold give several a run for there money.
Wonderful service meets great food
Stylish place, very comfortable, very pleasant and professional service and really lovely food - only family in that night, but we were made to feel special and will go back - too good to not go again!
A lovely evening
We had a very enjoyable evening at Essence while visiting Stratford for a short break. The restaurant had a relaxed, comfortable feel and our waiter was very friendly and helpful. For a starter my husband liked his smoked haddock risotto but felt it could have been a little tastier (that's probably just a matter of taste). For the mains I had the cod with seafood risotto and my husband had the cod and chips (real chips). There was also a lovely big plate of vegetables. Both were delicious and the portions very generous, so much so that we couldn't manage a dessert although we were sorry when we saw how nice one looked being brought to another table. We will visit again next time we're in Stratford.
We found this restaurant on Trip Advisor & were impressed with the reviews so decided to try it for ourselves. We were not disappointed. The service was excellent, warm, friendly and inviting whilst still being efficient and professional. The attention to detail was evident throughout the evening and we came away with wonderful memories & very full tummies!
Definitely worth a visit
Having booked Essence purely on the TopTable reviews, I can now only but add my own praise. Visiting Stratford for a birthday weekend we wanted to find somewhere special to eat, Essence did not disappoint. The setting is lovely, informal and relaxed, the staff were superb from the minute we arrived. The menu displayed creativity with an amazing choice for every pallet. The presentation and flavours with every one of the dishes was outstanding, I'm just sad that I do not live closer to visit more regularly!
We were greeted warmly by
We were greeted warmly by a maitre d who was red hot on service. He was appropriately warm and friendly. He made a real effort to interact with every customer and directed hiis staff so you wre made to feel very valued. . All other waiting staff were polite and excellent.
The star course was the haddock risotto - excellent. Fish and chips were a little greasy for my fiances taste. I had the cod with shellfish risotto for main - also excellent. The portions were quite large so good value for money.
Will go back.
We went here for a pre theatre meal in Stratford. The food was excellent, especially the haddock and seafood tagliatelle. The waiter was very helpful and ensured that we would not be late for the show. Only wished we had more time in Stratford, as I would love to go back for a more leisurely meal.
Excellent meal in a great location for the theatre.
Great value in Stratford upon Avon
My wife and I enjoyed an excellent meal at Essence in Stratford upon Avon; quality of food and service could not be faulted. We look forward to dining there again when next in the area.
Freshly cooked and delicious.
We enjoyed selecting our freshly cooked meal from a varied menu. Food was well presented and delicious. Staff were friendly and we received good service, all at a reasonable price. Very convenient for theatre.
Lovely food, excellent service. Would highly recommend it. It was a bit hot downstairs but given the weather not surprising.
Great food at a good price
We had been here before and so we were keen to return. The food I'd excellent and proves very good value if you order from the pre-theatre menu. There is a kids menu too!
perfectly cooked food
This was a pre-theatre dinner, so we ate earlier than usual and the restaurant was quiet to begin with. The staff were very attentive, although I did ask for 'no ice' in my water but got it anyway. The food was very good - the scallops were perfectly cooked, and the pork belly was full of flavour. The Eton mess was lacking some sweetness to counteract the sharp berries in it. My husband felt a little constrained with the menu, as he felt it was more of a colder weather one rather than catering for the hot summer weather... but he did enjoy his fish (the chips were not as crispy as he would have cooked them) and crème brulee. The wines were good value, but the white we chose was not chilled down enough. I would eat here again & do recommend
Brilliant Service, Great Food
I ate here with my wife on our honeymoon and we really enjoyed it. The food was well cooked, the service was friendly and attentive and the venue itself creates a great atmosphere. We would definitely eat here again
Thoughtful service, great food
Really impressed with Essence. We went there for an anniversary meal so had hoped for something special and it didn't disappoint. The staff were kind, engaging and both knowledgeable and passionate about the food. The kitchen really understands food and how to put flavours together. Would recommend without hesitation and we will definitely retrn next time we're in Stratford.
Starting with the smoked haddock risotto and then the main course the whole experience was excellent. Food and service were outstanding. the only surprise was that it was not busy.
Great food, good value
Thoroughly enjoyed our meal, went back the next day , but turned away as fully booked, which is a good sign of a great restaurant.
Good food, great value and service!
Swift and courteous service. Starters good value, though not huge. I see this as an advantage, as the main courses were very generous portions. Unfortunately we did not have the time to sample the puddings.
All food cooked from fresh, and it showed.
The food and service were good. The wine seems to be overpriced though. Did not like the interior either.
Been to this resturant many
Been to this resturant many years ago was not called eccence then it still is an excellent resturant , friendly staff excellent food and good value for money.
Good value, good food, good service
Very competent cooking, good ingredients and an interesting choice on the menu. There are a number of good places to eat nearby in Stratford but this is one we are quite likely to go back to as the food is high quality and good value. It doesn't say you get veg on the menu with your mains but you do, and they are good.
Great food and outstanding service
Went to Essence for a pre-theatre meal. The young staff made us feel very welcome and had an excellent knowledge of the menu.
The food was also delicious.
Went as a group of 4 friends on Saturday night. Service was great - attentive but not 'in your face'. Staff were all very young but very friendly and professional. Food was great with a good choice for all courses. Would go again if in Stratford.
Very friendly and helpful
Very friendly and helpful service. Good value pre theatre menu with choices that suited everyone in a party of very mixed ages and tastes. We had a lovely bottle of Pinot noir too which was also very reasonably priced.
good food, pleasant staff
we booked Essence at the last minute as we were visiting Stratford and didn't know the area so looked up somewhere with good ratings. Some of the reviews were negative but we found the place clean, friendly and the food good. The service was a bit slow but not so much we were annoyed by it, would be fine if you wanted a relaxed evening. We sat downstairs and felt that the decor and ambience left something to be desired. We decided it was because the restaurant is located in a courtyard and the large windows look out onto a lot of brick. Some blinds might make it feel a bit less like a showroom and a bit cozier and if it were my restaurant I would ditch the plastic covered menus as they give the feeling of a cheaper place.
