A meet up lunch with friends
A meet up lunch with friends was most enjoyable - superb service, great food and welcome attention to the dietary needs of one diner. And all accompanied by a roaring fire, excellent Harveys or mulled cider. Highlights were the fish board, the red mullet and the bass. Also appreciated was convenience of online booking.
We had steak, partridge and
We had steak, partridge and sticky toffee pudding. All were well cooked, served attractively with good vegetables. We had a bottle of Argentinian Malbec that was smooth and tasty - not cheap but not exorbitant. Double expresso coffee rounded off an excellent meal. Service was attentive and the food came in good time. An open fire burned in the grate and the dining room was warm and friendly on a bitterly cold lunch time. Cost about normal at some £70 before tip. .The dining room was empty when we arrived at 12.30 but pretty full by the time we left A good experience for an upper range but unpretentious gastro-Pub. We will go again .
Lunched at The Gun with .my wife and another couple who we see three or four times a year. Overall this gastro pub has maintained its high standards since our last visit a couple of years ago. An interesting menu; I like the presentation of many of the items as both starter and main course size portions as we were all happy with two starter size choices - leaving room for a desert without the feeling of over indulgence! We will mot leave it so long until our next visit.
Ideal Sunday lunch location good food and service is excellent
Absolutely fantastic pub,
Absolutely fantastic pub, went on Sunday as a party of 9, food was fantastic and staff were extremely friendly and efficient, they knew exactly what they were talking about with the food and wine. I just wish we lived closer, we'd be there all the time!
Great place to relax with
Great place to relax with friends over a meal. Varied food choices including wide selection of Gluten Free options - the lamb shank was so tender and the desserts superb. The service was welcoming wth the right level of attentiveness. We'll definitely return .
After many years, we will return.
We used to be very frequent visitors to The Gun but after a change in management some while ago we stopped going. This visit was a trial and we found the whole meal experience very good. We will be back

Superb as always, very attentive staff and wonderful meal
We met with old friends who we hadn't seen for a while. Had a great evening enhanced by the excellent food and atmosphere
Excellent - Great Friendly Service
Got there a bit early at 17:45 on Saturday were offered to be shown to the table, even though they werent actually open yet. Had pre starter nibbles, the ham and olives really were great. The restaurant certainly began to fill up and we realised we had been very lucky to get a table! Starters and Mains and desserts were excellent and the Final bill was pleasantly low.
One of my favourite places to take friends and family for great food and a warm atmosphere
Me and a friend went for dinner- It was warm, cosy, beautifully furnished and had a classy but homely country feel. The service was excellent and everything was very comfortable. Our food came promptly and was very good although slightly highly priced for mine- seabass was a little warm rather than hot! Overall I would definitely go again. (And I never leave reviews) Dessert was fantastic!
We hadn't tried the gun before although we had heard it was good. Made welcome on arrival and then chose to sit at our table. Menu was short which is a good thing as it means food is fresh, prices about the norm for this area. The food was excellent and well parented. I thought the wine was a bit pricey and maybe the corkage is on the high side, it was first class however. Would certainly recommend it and go again.
The gun was lovely one of
The gun was lovely one of the best around would highly recommend
Was recommended this pub. So glad we found it. Great pub with great food. The staff are friendly and attentive. Great day.
A Very Good Country Pub
Have been to the Gun on several occasions for lunch with my walking group but this is the first time I have been in an evening and it didn't disappoint. The food is always very good and well presented.
Excellent anniversary meal.
My wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary with dinner at The Gun. The menu choice and food was excellent. The service and attention given by staff was first class. We will return to this restaurant and recommend without hesitation.
Lovely old fashioned pun with
Lovely old fashioned pun with an open fire. Good, tasty food and excellent service.
Friday night better than a takeway
Visited the Gun after a long absence and was really impressed.
Fantastic service love the idea of English Tapas with a beautiful Air dried ham waiting to be slivered like in a Spanish bar.
Food choice really good only 2 of us one haddock and chips was Devine with my special Sussex coast Bass fillet cooked as i love it with baked baby tomatoes a veg risotto you get the oicture...yum yum
And to top it off the orice was excellent
Will definitely return again soon
Served with a smile
Great food, service and atmosphere. Been several times and will go back again.
We had a most enjoyable meal,
We had a most enjoyable meal, polite and attentive staff.
beautiful pub lunch
Great food in a great environment. The walk with clear instructions was also enjoyable.
Enjoyed the Gun again.
Once again the Gun was up to the standard I've come to expect from the Elite group. The welcome and hospitality were very good, the atmosphere was friendly and easy, the food was the right end of 'gastro pub' and the value was fair. This appears to be the norm at the Gun, more of a family venue than business I would suggest although there are a few intimate litte corners for those that prefer the quieter side.
Robs birthday meal
Great food as always little restricted on space as i was recovering from a recent operation and still on crutches But as ever friendly staff , good atmosphere and yes I do often recommend this place as a good eating house with a wide selection of beers and unusual lagers
We thoroughly enjoyed eating at the Gun. The pre-ordered vegetarian vegetarian meals were delicious and everyone enjoyed their meal. The deserts were very tasty. Their staff is very attentive and have a good sense of humor. All in all it was a lovely meal out.
Great Sunday Lunch
I took a party of 10 for Sunday lunch at "The Gun". We all had a great meal and the interaction from our Hungarian waiter was brilliant. We had a 12.30 booking and were still there at 4 o'clock because we were enjoying ourselves. We can all recommend "The Gun"!
Busy for a Thursday
Considering the remoteness of this pub/restaurant it was packed not a table spare, a good testament I feel for the quality of the food. However the downside that the service was a bit slow, cheerful but slow.
My experience at The Gun
This is my fourth experience dning at The Gun. It was extremely pleasant. Dinner in mid winter was especially good!
Really lovely gastro pub, I highly recommend it. The garden especially is really pretty backing on to fields and the play area is great for kids. Very good food and extremely friendly and helpful staff. I'll be going back.
Our first visit after recommendatio
Our first visit after recommendation from a friend. We really enjoyed our evening. The food was very good, infact it's the best Brownie I've ever had & my partner said his steak was cooked to perfection. Lovely rural location, pretty, peaceful & quiet. Internally, spacious & clean. Decor, simple & elegant, room well lit, relaxing not dismal. Delighted that the tables were not on top of one another. Service efficient, friendly, unobtrusive & unhurried. Looking forward to going back & keen to have afternoon tea there before the summer is over.
Sunday 4th August
Once again we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Gun. The staff are always welcoming and helpful. They are attentive without being intrusive. The food was of the usual high standard and well presented. We would recommend this restaurant for very pleasant dining.
Fine dining in Sussex countryside
A lovely old country pub with super food in the beautiful Sussex countryside. We have been there many times and have never been disappointed.
We booked at the last moment without any recommendation but was impressed as soon as we walked in. Very warm welcome...good beer and uncomplicated menu. We also bought into (£15) to a loyalty card for pub and sister pubs. Will be going again soon.
another great meal
Excellent meal, service at The Gun
Tapas menu great had 4 items as a sharing starter, was a lot! Could have just had Tapas!
Main course : lamb and a Mushroom dish both good.
Good wine list with glass. Carafe and bottle options
A very enjoyable oasis in
A very enjoyable oasis in a country location, the food is very good and is provided by a friendly and enthusiastic staff.
We had a fantastic evening meal with my father, who celebrated his birthday. He never had so nice marinated olives like yours. We had duck leg from the special, which was superb... I did like the attention, when I did asked to make it a bit special for his birthday, we've got some nice menus and candle on the dessert... I recommend for everybody who likes great food, good wines and beers, and doesn't mind to drive a couple of miles to get a nice experience with a friendly and attentive staff. The price I have to say is fair, the food is wonderfully presented, great choices of wine as well...
Well done guys, we'll be back!
Fantastic quality food at an excellent price, extremely friendly staff were very helpful and professional. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a quiet evening meal or a group night out.
Excellent specials of sardines lamb shank and strudel at a gentle pace with good service.
Wife had scallops and linguini.Scallops bland and over fussy linguini excellent..(crab+prawn)
Nice venue will go back when log fires .Sat Nav helps find it.
Good not too long menu relaxed atmosphere.
Very good meal. Restaurant very busy so service not 100% but still good and we would definitely go back for the food alone.
Good food ! Enjoyable evening!
We have visited The Gun several times and have never been disappointed, either with the food or the service. The staff are consistently pleasant and do all they can to make sure customers have an enjoyable evening.
I celebrated my birthday here at lunchtime with a group of girl friends. The atmosphere was very relaxed, warm and friendly. The whole meal was well presented and beautifully fresh. We all enjoyed our meals (which were very varied), and felt that we were able to sit and chat without feeling rushed. Although I did feel that the drinks, especially the wine was over priced, at roughly £18 to £20 for a bottle with no cheaper house wine as an alternative, but food was very good value. I would thoroughly recommend.
Very impressed with the service
Very impressed with the service and the food quality
Three of us went for an evening meal. As always there was a friendly welcome and, although we had booked, we were able to choose our own table as it was early. There was a lovely log fire and the ambience very cosy. The service was efficient and friendly and we were advised that there would be a wait as we had ordered partridge and it was being freshly cooked. They do a mean 'Virgin Mary' ( no vodka as driving- pity).
The fish sharing board, as a starter was very good- quality ingredients used. Mains were very good and the Earl Grey Creme Brulee elicited deep sighs!!!
Will be returning in the near future
Excellent as always !
Another superb meal at The Gun. Don't go there very often but when we do it never fails; a favourite place to go for family meals/celebrations or to take visiting friends. 3 of us had the fish & chips - one of our party said it was the
best fish he'd ever had; even beating a specialst fish restaurant in Devon. Staff always very efficient and obliging -
happy to adapt a meal if neccessay and always cooked to perfection.
lovely evening with friends
We hadn't been to the Gun for a while but shall be back as soon as possible! On a cold Friday evening at the end of a busy week it was the perfect place for a leisurely meal with friends. We had the famous Sussex smokie for mains; it was delicious, rich cheese sauce complementing succulent smoked fish. (Slightly surprised that the advertised salad had morphed into a selection of vegetables and not totally convinced that parsnip was an ideal accompaniment to the Smokie but ceratinly didn't spoil our enjoyment.) Two of our group had dessert, ice cream selection and crumble - both delicious. The service was impeccable, staff friendly and efficient, without being intrusive. Maybe a bit pricey but excellent value.
Evening Meal with Friends
The food and service was very good but it was somewhat noisy due to it being full. My hearing aids had difficulty coping!
The value was good and we will visit again. We have already recommended it to friends.
Very nice location, with smart county styling. The food is simple with a good mix of modern European dishes. The sharing platters are particularly good value. The cheese board was very generous. Compatible to the Bell in Ticehurst but a fraction of the price
