Perfect before the theatre
As there is little else in the vicinity of the Barbican, this is a good bet before a concert as you can book a table for an early slot so give yourself plenty of time to enjoy your meal then stroll up to your concert. We ate in The Lounge which is a tapas style place. They recommend 3-4 plates but unless you have a very large appetite I would say a couple each plus a side is plenty. The deserts are quite large so you can fill up there if you have a sweet tooth. Price is average, but worth it for the convenience.
Did not know what to expect.
Tapas portions was just right.
If you don't want a big meal, this is the place for you.
Staff went the extra mile for us
Extremely friendly and helpful service . My husband is blind so eating out can sometimes be difficult but this was no problem. The small plates and their sequential rather than all at once arrival made this easier for us. We will be back
Somewhere to return to
This was my first visit to Barbican Lounge and I would definitely return. The style of food - small plates to share - is ideal for pre-theatre and service is prompt even when the restaurant is busy. The food is tasty and although some dishes are conventional old favourites there are more original options too. For central London, it's good value for money too.
Overall a very good experience - using Toptable for the first time as got no reply when phoning the restaurant or response to voicemail that I left!
Really tasty food - our party of 3 (4th couldn't make it because of the snow) enjoyed a Margarita, 3 small plates each & shared a bottle of wine.
Quibbles: a little slow in taking order for cocktails and bringing water to table. Serving of the food could be a bit better planned - we were asked if we were sharing the dishes and said no (all on different diets!) and with the food coming in one/two at a time, one of our group of three was without any of her dishes whilst the other two of us had at one or two choices to eat, for a good five minutes.
Staff very nice and efficient.
The food is always tasty, good quality and service is quite speedy if a little haphazard.
We like to go here for a meal before the theater
Early supper before a concert
We had booked dinner before a concert. The service was very quick and efficient. The food was brought promtly and was very tasty. We chose a selection of tapas to share between 4 .We chose 3 each and they were delicious. It was a little more expensive than I had anticipated.
Easiest option for a pre show meal
Booked here to eat on a Friday evening before a show. This part of town doesn't have many eating options and, although I didn't initially want to eat in the Barbican, a bit of research showed that this was the easiest option. In the end it worked perfectly with light, tasty food - small plates and sharing platters with some middle eastern influences - just what you need when you are going into a 3 hour performance! The decor is very Barbican with seventies fixtures and fittings, but the diverse, arty crowd give it a nice buzz. On this Friday evening lots of people had come to the same conclusion and were being turned away - book early to avoid disappointment!
Great spot for a relaxed lunch on a Friday, and surprisingly empty. The restaurant is large and well-situated, and the staff were very attentive. We had the Tapas as an easy option and it was delicious, although I fancied lots of other items on the pretty varied menu too. The menu includes some quirky twists on your normal tapas that were absolutely delicious, and their tapas deal makes it really good value. Loved it.
Great option for pre-theatre meal in the Barbican - really interesting dishes. Lovely helpful staff.
Pre Dance Meal
Very welcoming staff serving delicious tapas style plates with an inventive range of options. The Chef's recommendation Gnocchi was excellent. Very good value discount as a Barbican member.
Great food & Gluten Free too!
This lounge has a nice variety of small plates, that are tasty and are surprisingly a good size. And I think it is wonderful that the menu denotes which items are gluten free!
Tapas style restaurant in Barbican
Did not realise it existed before. Had tickets for 7.30 p.m. and arrived early. Staff were lovely and we asked if we could sit in the lounge/bar area and have a drink first. They had several nice French wines on offer which is important to us.
When ready to eat were told it was tapas style, they recommended 2 or 3 dishes each and they would arrive as they were ready. We ordered 6 which was JUST enough (if we had had a sweet would probably have been fine). The food was really tasty but if we went again would ask if we could order 2 at a time as they come out so quickly and the staff are so efficient at whisking dishes away it all feels rather too hectic! The chairs are extremely hard and VERY uncomfortable. Lovely outdoor area for summer.
A refreshing change
The Barbican Lounge was clean and attractively set out. The food was well presented and there was ample choice. The waiter suggested we have 2-3 of the small mains, we opted for 2 and were sated. The puddings were excellent and generous portions. Had we wanted we could have shared each of the mains dishes for a more exciting combination of tastes.
expensive but interesting.
expensive but interesting.
it would be apprecaited if staff were to tell one, how many courses to follow, once meal is started
Delicious Valentine Kiss cocktails to start the evening. Patient staff as my companion was unexpectedly delayed. The food was a treat. We particularly enjoyed the deconstructed fish and chips plate. Great way to start our evening at the Barbican Theatre.
Dine at the Barbican
It was Valentine's night, so understandably busy. Red rose petals scattered on the tables was a nice touch!
The ambience is a bit austere but it is in the Barbican. The staff were friendly, helpful and attentive without being intrusive. The food was very good, both mains and deserts, with an interesting choice on the menu, and well presented. If going to an evening event at the Barbican, we would book again.
Pre concert meal
Having read previous reviews I was worried we'd either get all our food at once or none for ages! However, our dishes arrived with good timing. There was a wide choice of dishes & portions were more generous than some tapas restaurants. Special mention goes to the ribs & the chips! Staff were friendly & efficient even though this was their busy pre-show time. Decor is bit like an upmarket railway buffet, but that's the Barbican. Better value than I was expecting too. Would definitely book again for a pre show meal.
Quick bite before a show
We had dinner and a drink here directly before a show at the Barbican. The tapas style food was tasty and perfect for our needs and the martini we got from the neighbouring martini bar and brought into the restaurant was absolutely delicious. The ambience of the restaurant (much like the rest of the Barbican) is closed in and urban, but the staff were attentive enough to move beyond the slightly austere backdrop. We thought it was a good spot for a quick bite before a show and would definitely come here again if the occasion arises.
We were very impressed with the attention we received from the unusually high number of staff who took an interest in us, all of whom were very sensitively alert to our needs, sometimes before we were. We were going to write anyway to compliment the restaurant, on this aspect particularly, but the food was very good, too!
Dining as it should be!
Excellent food and service, despite very busy saturday evening. Thank you.
We enjoyed a pre-concert meal
We enjoyed a pre-concert meal and the food was imaginative, tasty and prettily served. The service was good and attentive. It certainly removes some hassle to be able to eat at the venue before a performance but our meal rated higher than that! The only downer aws the rather 'canteen style' of the lounge and close proximity of fellow diners. I would opt for eating at the Barbican Lounge before any of the other restaurants in the area.
Great restaurant w/ gf options
Not only is the food, service and ambience great at the Barbican Lounge, but I am so pleased they have gf dishes marked on the menu. They're delicious too and just happen to be gluten free!
Tapas with style
I took US visitors here before a show at the Barbican. They were very impressed with the quality and imaginativeness of the tapas-style dishes that were served with charm but efficiency. Ideal for people who like to share. Although everything was good, the desserts were particularly good. A bit on the pricey side, with the cheapest bottle starting at around £18. Each dish was £6-7, so with 3 mains and a dessert per person, you're talking around £75 for two.
Lite Bites in the Barbican
Although the menu could do with freshening up now and then, the Barbican Lounge continues to deliver good quality small plates at good value for the location. My server pointed out that the restaurant was fully booked that lunchtime, so it might be better if I ordered all my dishes at once. I prefer to order one at a time - takes longer, but no problem if you're not in a rush - but the kitchen was dealing well with the busy time, so no problem.
Just what we wanted
My friend and I were going to a concert and went for lunch beforehand. She doesn't eat a big lunch and I'm a vegetarian so we couldn't have chosen better. The tapas style menu means you can choose exactly how much you have to eat. The three dishes we had were good, one was very good, the warm beetroot tart. The service was charming and attentive. A smile from every person who came to our table and general courtesy and charm all round.
We sat at a table near the entrance so I couldn't really tell you what the atmosphere is like. A bit canteeny maybe but the warm service made up for that. There's plenty of room, which I like.
Melody Gardot Evening
The meal was booked as part of an evening with friends to see Melody Gardot at the Barbican. Neither of the 4 of us had eaten in the Lounge before. We were thus taken through the menu and explanations of the Tapas experience. The food was very good and the staff courteous and helpful at all times.
The meal was good, service and everything.
The table was booked for 2 for 6.00pm April 4th.
Fortunately the restaurant was not so full that they couldn't fit us in because they had no apparent notice of our booking.
there was a handwritten list in pencil. My name was not on it.
Great food big or small
The tapas concept executed brilliantly. The only advise is to suggest to the waiting staff as to how you want your food served as they tend bring all the dishes together ( most people order four or five small plates) which is perhaps overwhelming. Perhaps if you are not in a hurry ( ie you have a couple of hours) then they can pace it better. Of course if you want to gulp down your food in a hurry before the theatre, the current serving style would suit. Two or three small plates together is fine but all five as a bit overwhelming. Food however is excellent in the midst of the "brutalist" architecture of the Barbican.
We chose 6 dishes from the Lounge's interesting menu of tapas-style 'small plates'. All of the dishes were delicious and the service was good. An ideal place to eat if you're seeing something at the Barbican, although it's probably worth making a trip just to go to the restaurant.
The lovely thing about Barbican
The lovely thing about Barbican lounge is having lots of little dishes to share instead of one big main course. It's good value for money and service is quick, ideal for pre-theatre.
A tapas novice
Attending a performance at the Barbican I booked a table at the Barbican Lounge. As a tapas novice, I was unsure what to expect. I was soon given a very helpful briefing by the waitress, following which I chose, as suggested, three dishes, which then came in fairly rapid succession. Ranging from Prawns in batter to small cheese souffles, all three were delicious, accompanied by an excellent glass of PicPoul. As a realtively light, qucik meal before a performance this was ideal and sensibly priced.
Very good food
Good food again, reasonable service considering how busy pre show dining window was.
Great in the sunshine
We sat on the terrace in the first of the spring sun, and it was lovely. We were going to a show in the Barbican so the tapas was perfect for a quick bite. Nice glass of wine. Waiter advised us against getting dessert if we wanted to get to the show.
Great food, surly service
We ate at the Barbican Lounge before going to a film at the Barbican Cinema. The tapas style menu has a nice range of options, especially for vegetarians. The food is very well prepared and contains an interesting mix of ingredients. The service was pretty fast, which is a plus, but the waiter was pretty surly. He was one of those people who thinks he knows better than the customers and as you are giving him your order he looks away as if you are wasting his time. Sadly his English also led to communication problems, although that's a fairly common problem in the London dining scene which I don't mind so much. Overall I will return, but hopefully the waiter will have moved on.
Great for a treat
The tapas style menu and service - you get the dishes when they are ready, not all at once which means you get it when its hot (fab!) - was truly enjoyable. Not all the dishes were perfect but most were and I really enjoyed the Thai fishcakes and whitebait. Will go again.
Just as good the second time around
Once again we enjoyed the "tapas" here and weren't disappointed. Not only the food is good but sitting
outside on the terrace enjoying the peaceful atmosphere "at the lake", one can hardly believe that
the pulsating city of London is just on the other side.
We really enjoyed our pre
We really enjoyed our pre theatre dinner. And agree with other Top Table diners. It is fit for foodies. The small size of the courses is perfect for tasting 2 or 3 dishes according to your appetite. We loved the goats cheese and beetroot salad, huge prawns in a batter, the lamb tagine and the lemon filled pie with berry salad was delicious . The long thin room has tables overlooking the lake and on a warm day there are tables outside. Highly recommended! Very relaxing way of eating pre theatre.
As always, great setting in the Barbican style. The service was very friendly and efficient. Tapas were fine but not exceptional - slightly overpriced final bill for what we had. I would go again as great for a quick bite before going to a show.
Pre post theatre
Good for pre/post theatre at the Barbican. Food good but a bit on the pricey side. Good service relaxed atmosphere.
summer dining in Central London
After so many months of WEATHER it was an absolute joy to dine on the Barbican's Lounge Bar Terrace. Small plates are v tasty - we would recommend the lamb kofta, battered prawns and especially the beetroot tarte tatin. Service was friendly and efficient. It was a lovely way to spend Thursday evening.
Good Service, though not cheap
HI, the food and service was outstanding. However, I think some of the dishes were overpriced. It is a good spot to get a bite before a concert, as they deliver very quickly.
The food was absolutely wonderful
The food was absolutely wonderful - I cannot fault any of the dishes I had. Service was attentive, but not in your face. Excellent - would definitely recommend.
Only two stars for atmosphere
Only two stars for atmosphere because the evening we chose was a quiet one at the Barbican, no events. But this was ideal for conversation! Can't wait to go back there (this weekend!)
Good value pre-show meal
We booked a table for four and the staff were very accommodating of the fact that two turned up late (one of them not even to eat!) Table staff were extremely friendly, attentive and efficient. A good selection of tasty tapas dishes was enjoyed by us all. We were finished in good time for our show in the theatre. Altogether a dining experience we'd recommend to anyone.
Perfect start to the evening
The food was lovely, the service exceptional. As a vegetarian, I really appreciated having not just something meat-free on offer, but something meat-free and really well thought-out and delicious (avocado mousse to die for, delectable arancini). My only regret was that I was too full to eat dessert (I shouldn't have pigged out on the bread, but it was so good...). A great choice for lovers of tapas.
An excellent meal with wide range of choice on menu. Helpful attentive service from efficient staff in atrtractive environment that is convenient for Barbican Theatre and Concert Hall
We were pleasantly surprised
We were pleasantly surprised by the new Barbican Lounge. It was fast, imaginative and high quality tapas and provided an ideal pre-theatre experience. Courses were served quickly but there was no pressure on us to leave. Cool decor too. Well done to the Barbican management.
Pre theatre Tapas
It was my first visit and it offered a quick service with decent quality food on a pre theatre menu
Excellent service for a busy pre-theatre meal. Good tapas selection.
