High quality food and service at a window table overlooking the river - a great pre-theatre lunch..
Fantastic meal before show
Visited last week for my girlfriend's birthday & to see Richard II. Show was fantastic and the meal before was the perfect preamble.
Service was very good. Food was fantastic. A great variety on the menu and cooked to perfection. Portions were perhaps a little small but quality was top-notch. Most importantly my girlfriend enjoyed it. Didn't feel too rushed before the show and easy to get to our seats later.
Unsure what to expect of our first visit to the restaurant. We found the experience was brilliant, great food, lovely setting and excellent hospitality.
Better than pie in the sky
With a great atmosphere, pleasant attentive staff and a terrific view what's not to like? The food isn't cheap, but it is worth paying that bit extra when you get so much more. The earl grey cocktails aren't bad either!!
Outstanding start to the evening
What better way to prepare for a great performance and production (Richard 11) than to enjoy a delightful meal in such an imaginatively created restaurant. Each occasion we have been here has not failed to impress with friendly staff and excellent service. Will have no hesitation in returning - again and again. Keep up the good work
The whole experience of dining pre-theatre is excellent. The staff are friendly and efficient and the food excellent. There menu is varid and there are excellent wines both by the bottle and glass.
The staff are anxious not to rush theatre goers but equally ensure that those attending a performance are not late into the auditorium.
The meal enhances the whole RSC experience.
Before Richard the Second
A very good dining experience as usual.Unobtrusive but efficient service, and a tasty menu.
Ideal for pre/post theatre meal
Good choice of main courses, very nice food and pleasant service, definitely worth a visit if attending the RSC theatre or having a day out in Stratford.
We enjoyed yet another meal in the Rooftop. Menu is always interesting and excellent value. Staff were great and not pushy allowing you plenty of time to relax.
I always think the lighting is too dark and, as seems the fashion, the food is not hot.
But these are very minor minors.
Very good, pleasant service, something for all tastes.
Good food, good service, lovely
Good food, good service, lovely setting. Highly recommended.
Even though it had been very
Even though it had been very busy just before we arrived, we had very good service, good humoured and friendly. in addition to good food and wine. we will definitely book again.
Slick & Interesting
Great lunch pre-matinee performance, loved the food choices, and the speed of service, which was prompt, but not hasty. The venison was perfectly cooked, and just the right size of dish for a lunch. I like the focus on offering gluten free options, and the Made In Stratford mark is an interesting nod to local sourcing that doesn't feel like tokenism. Our waiter James was very charming, and made sure that we were out in good time for the show.
interesting but trying too hard
Nice food - excellent catering for coeliac diners.
The menu was too try hard and some menu items weren't clearly explained Or broken down.
I.e a lamb dish with a nicoise dressing. I know what's in a nicoise but the combo was so different I hadn't anticipated large anchovy fillets.
Gluten free cake was nice warm but a little dry - would have been better made with more ground almonds and less gf flour.
I enjoy eating at the Rooftop
I enjoy eating at the Rooftop Restaurant prior to a show. The ambience, food and service are always great, so I heartily recommend it.
We first ate there soon after
We first ate there soon after it opened where we found a poor reception which spoiled the moment for us. This time (which was after the show had begun and therefore staff had more time) the attention could not have been better and the food, though minimalist is extremely good value, inventive and tasty.
Being in the theatre, it's
Being in the theatre, it's ideally placed for a pre-theatre dinner. We were a little early for your booking, but were taken to our table without having to wait. Opted for two courses (main and dessert) which were excellent. Had we wanted to or been short of time, we could have had our puddings in the interval which is a nice touch. We'd booked our table for 6.00pm as the performance started at 7.30. This was plenty of time for 2 courses and coffee. Only gripe? There was only one vegetarian main course and if you didn't like goats cheese you were stuck - fortunately that wasn't an issue for the vegetarian in our party. Overall, an excellent experience with great food and we got 10% off our bill being an associate member of the RSC.
Friendly and attentive staff
Friendly and attentive staff - always a pleasure to dine at the RSC.
HENRY 11 /ROOFTOP 1
LOVELY MEAL AND CHAMPS WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE IF OUTSIDE WERE LITE UP ,VERY GOOD SERVICE
Pre Richard 11
My second visit to The Rooftop Restaurant at the RSC. Both times the food has been delicious, beautufully presented and good value. The service is excellent too.
I took a friend to the theatre restaurant for her birthday treat before we saw Richard II. The service was quick and we found that we had plenty of time. We enjoyed the food and thought there was a good choice. We're looking forward to going again.
A very enjoyable experience
A very enjoyable experience and will recommend to friends
We had an excellent meal here before going to see Richard II at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. We were asked if we were going to the play so that our service would be prompt and our meal unhurried. The ambience of the restaurant was very pleasant and the service very attentive. I had a starter of tongue and potato salad which was extremely tasty though a tiny bit "hot". My husband loved his salad of chicory, cheese and walnuts and is now a convert to chicory. My main course of confit of chicken and risotto was delicious. My husband had hake as a main course and the waitress advised him to have some frites with it which he agreed it needed. He had a very rich chocolate brulee to finish and I had coffee. Lovely meal, very pleasantly served.
My husband & I dined here with another couple before attending evening performance at the RSC.
The food was excellent, really well thought out, nicely cooked, and beautifully presented.
The veggie options were limited to 1 starter and 1 main course, a little restrictive and disappointing.
Apart from that, the food was superb, the service attentive and overall, a real treat!
Dine Before Drama
My wife and I decided that an evening at the wonderful Royal Shakespeare Theatre warranted a good quality pre -show meal and we weren't disappointed. The meal we booked for 5pm was billed as a 'tea' - but 'dinner' was more accurate. Quantity and quality and price was just about right; only one minor criticism - the ice cream dessert was tasty but rather unimaginative in presentation. Otherwise everything else was fine, the friendly, efficient service included. All-in-all a fitting preamble to a terrific piece of theatre (David Tennant in Richard II). We will certainly do this again (future theatre trips already planned) - just a shame we live a 180 miles from Stratford.
RICHARD II NIGHT OUT
Visited for pre theatre meal before Richard II - meal very good although the service was a little slow - but our waiter kept us informed of delays in the kitchen and the restaurant was vey very busy . - and we where in plenty of time for the performance.
We had two courses with cheese - food excellent and beautifully presented.
Cheese course a delight as we had cheeses we had not tasted before - a few more of the lovely biscuit's would be good!
all in all a great way to start the night
Was a great way to start the evening prior to performance..Excellent service and atmosphere and great food
Good meal and wines served efficiently with plenty of time to take seats in the theatre, despite 6.15 sitting!
Very nice pre theatre meal
Ate here with my husband prior to seeing a play - very nice surroundings, great food and value considering the constraints of serving food to lots of people with a fixed end time. Service was v.good and when the we raised the issue of cold coffee it was replaced immediately. I would go again and would even consider if not going to a play.
This was a very good experience from start to finish. We were warmly welcomed. The waiters were attentive and friendly and gave excellent service. Importantly, especially for a pre-theatre meal, we were not rushed and felt we had the table for as long as we needed it. The menu was varied and presented a number of tempting choices. Every course was delicious and superbly presented. We will be back!
A good start to the evening
It was easy to book online. We had a lovely meal - soup, pigeon breast, lamb rump & seabass. I would agree with an earlier review that crisp fish skin might have been nice, but that was a minor point. Enjoyed the choice of 3 different kinds of artisan bread, and the fact that the bread was offered more than once. We asked the waiter what "diplomat pudding" was, and he said it was similar to bread and butter pudding. When it came, I would have described it as similar to queen of puddings without the meringue, but none the worse for that. There didn't seem to be many waiting staff for the number of covers, but service was quick and efficient, in a lovely restauarant.
Great value for money. Delicious
Great value for money. Delicious food. Great choice. Good service. I was particularly enthused with your gluten free options.
Great food, served attentively and even coped with the fussy food requirements of my nephew. I've used the restaurant before and will do so again.
Pre theatre hotspot
We had a very good dinner at the Rooftop Restaurant at the RSC. We can recommend the cocktails although it was a pity that there was no rose syrup so one item was unavailable. The food was great especially the lobster, crayfish and prawn starter and the treacle tart.
Lunch before Richard II
Four of us dined before a 1.30 pm performance of a magnificent Richard II & the meal was a very enjoyable beginning & integral part of the day. The food & wine were all excellent & serving staff were both competent & friendly without being overly so ( no "okay guys?" thankfully ). A lovely restaurant with great views & those involved are a credit to the RSC.
Easy to book, great staff, service , food and views- lovely lunch.
great food great theatre
It was a great combination. The food was right of the top end table and very family priced. Usually l cannot wait to return to Stratford for the play. From now on it will be the play and the food....'nuff said
The food was excellent. Service
The food was excellent. Service was very efficient; waiting staff were lovely. It's a great venue-loved looking at the posters of the plays, too. An excellent hors d'oeuvre to seeing "Richard II". I had the lamb this time-gorgeous. I shall be back to try more dishes.
This is my second visit in a fortnight, and good to see that the first was not a one off. I have no idea how they manage to get the dishes out so quickly, so even guessing that there is a large amount of pre-cooking, even plating, the dishes have never seemed like they've been sat under a heat lamp. Interesting choices, great flavours, well executed, and timely in terms of service. Good wine list too.
Would definitley consider going for second sitting when the theatre crowds have gone in, and the cakes for afternoon tea looked delicious too. An all round great experience.
We have always been charmed by the waiters at the rooftop restaurant. However on Sunday lunchtime we were disappointed by one unsmiling fellow, who refused to have eye contact- shame, spoiled the experience!
Sitting in the Rooftop Restaurant. The sun is shining on the river. Oarsmen scull past. The food is delicious, sometimes very simple like the starter Winter salad with pickled walnuts or more luxurious - roast pheasant. Great start to a theatre break. The food here is delicious and the service punctilious.
Fiendly, efficient staff,
Fiendly, efficient staff, tough the restaurant had very few diners at that point (lunchtime pre-theatre) on a weekday. Surroundings bright and pleasing, lovely views over the river. Delightful. interesting menu and we were not disappointed with our choices.
Pre theatre meal
My wife and I were very impressed with the standard of food and service at the rooftop. We will have no hesitation in recommending it to others or indeed booking again.
A Special Evening
A very nice meal with my husband before the theatre, it was a fabulous way to celebrate my 50th birthday,
The three course meal is very good value with a wide range of choices beautifully presented. The food is exceptional and service organised so you don't feel rushed but have just time to enjoy the meal before strolling down to at the theatre. A must if you are in Stratford. Finally compliments to the chef what a great expansive Christmas meal
how I hate music in restaurants....
The meal was lovely, beautiful setting etc and staff couldn't have been more helpful.... but almost ruined by the piped music which I cannot believe ANYONE enjoys. WHY?
It wasn't even good music but really that's not the point. Music that we enjoy is so dependent on taste and you can't possibly know or cater for such diversity in a restaurant.
Great Birthday Meal
We had to change our booking time and add additional guests at short notice and the restaurant couldn't have been more helpful.
The service and the food were excellent and made a birthday celebration even better.
I wold highly recommend the restaurant.
An excellent venue for a brisk
An excellent venue for a brisk pretheatre meal or a leisurely lunch. The menu was uncomplicated with some interesting touches. The food was beautifully cooked and presented, and portions were modest but quite adequate. Service was polite and attentive without being overbearing. The restaurant was immaculately clean and laid out, with some window tables with memorable views. In our experience the ambience is generally quiet, calm and collected - a near perfect venue for entertaining.
A good generous and wholesome
A good generous and wholesome meal:
With very efficient service
Which gave us plenty of time to find our theatre seat
The pheasant was delicious, served with a piece of lead shot to show that it had been free range
Four of us dined at the RSC Rooftop restaurant and immediately hit a problem. Some members of the party were all set for a hearty Sunday lunch, while others had changed their plans and needed a lighter bite. The waiting staff couldn't have been more helpful, enabling us all to choose starter, main and dessert combinations that exactly met our needs.
All of this, combined with a brilliant view over the Avon made for a brilliant lunchtime experience.
