Great food, great service
A really great food experience in this little eating hole. Nice ambience, good service and delicious fresh ingredients. Would recommend the cheese souffle.
Quality food and atmosphere
A short but well thought out menu, delicious food and very helpful, friendly staff. The food was well prepared, tasty and reasonably priced.
Nicely laid out and relaxed atmosphere. It isn't a massive dining room but the tables are well spaced and didn't feel crushed.
Worth the excursion out from the City core and if you have time after there is the gallery to explore.
Great fresh cooked food! Very welcoming staff & a good selection of food.
Also a good selection of wines. Guinea fowl cooked to perfection tender & moist.
Shame that they have sold out of squid, but it's always next time.
Very relaxed atmosphere.
Absolutely loved this restaurant, the food is unpretentious and excellent. Highly recommended.

WE had Sunday lunch at the Whitechapel Gallery Dining Rooms which was a great success. The friendly service surrounded well prepared food in a calm environment. The chicken pie and the roast beef were perfect and good value for money. We shall return.
food and art
Fabulous gallery and restaurant. Excellent staff, food, ambience.
Had an excellent meal with
Had an excellent meal with my partner before Christmas, very suprised as i have been here a few times in the past few years that it was very quiet.
Pre-Orders - pork croquettes devine. Starters - Squid perfectly cooked, in-house somked mackerel excellent. Mains - Quail good, suprisingly meaty, Duck confit very good. Side of Chips Great! Good wilted greens too.
Great food, good wine and will be coming back much more regularly
Pre-Christmas Sunday lunch
Everything was great! The only 'complaint' I have is that the tables were rather tight together, as they were trying to get as many diners in as possibile. The large table next to us had about 5 children (under 13yrs) - they were noisey (which I know you can't help), but it felt as if they were sitting right at our table! It would have been better to have put that party in the private room that is available.
Dinner at the Whitechapel
Dinner at the Whitechapel Gallery dining Room was just what we wanted - a good quality, well prepared and served meal after a long day. The service was efficient and the food imaginative.
Absolutely lovely mid-week meal
Went with two friends on a Thursday night. Had a sneaky peak at the menu in advance and was practically drooling before I walked in. We ordered a couple of small plates (they were ok). Starters were all enjoyed, and mains were delicious. I had the crab linguine and it was without a doubt the best I have ever had ... it must be very bad for you! Desserts were tasty on all fronts, but unfortunately they didn't have the chocolate torte and salted caramel ice cream that night (grrrr!) though the nougat parfait was delicious! Service was friendly but unintrusive. Definitely worth visiting.
A Hidden Gem!
Second to none friendly yet professional service and excellent food. The duck breast was cooked to absolute perfection. Highly recommended!
Attentive and helpful service
Went here for my birthday and chose their special beef menu. Not exactly cheap, but it was very good. The waitress was superb!
Great food and service
Had razor clams with bacon - could eat that all day. The sweetness if the clams combines with the saltiness of the bacon worked great. As for the crab linguine, this is the first restaurant where I ve felt they were not stingy with the crab. The flavours were beautifully balanced. Loved the side truffle chips too.
Business lunch 8 February
We arrived a few minutes early and were warmly greeted and offered our table before our allotted time.
Excellent design with modernist furniture working with the historic interior to great effect.
The general ambience was an oasis from the busy street and gallery spaces, which are just steps away.
The food and wine were excellent, although there was only a single vegetarian option.
The spicy fishcake appetizer got us off to a shaky start (neither spicy or seasoned) but the Pork Chop and the Hake were both really good and the buttermilk pannacotta with rhubarb was sensational.
They have some wines available by the 500ml carafe which is perfect for lunch.
Staff were pleasent, prices reasonable and I will definitely be back.
Really nice vibe and lovely meal
Went on Valentine's Day and waas very pleasantly surprised by the relaxed vibe. More choices for meat lovers but really enjoyed my butternut squash risotto - cooked beautifully and subtle flavours. I would definitely go again.
An excellent lunch
Four of us thoroughly enjoyed lunch last Saturday. The service was excellent, friendly and knowledgeable, the menu extremely attractive, and the food and wine delicious. We live less than ten minutes walk from the restaurant and will certainly use it more in future.
A real treat!
I've been wanting to eat here for ages, and it didn't disappoint in any way. We loved the small dishes, so you can order several things, share, and therefore sample a variety - my favourite way of eating! Delicious food! I don't eat meat but there were lots of options, which was a treat. Highly recommended!
Elegant competence, as ever
As ever, eating at the Whitechapel Gallery Dining Room was an elegant and understated pleasure. The menu is short and unfussy with a surprisingly wide range of choice for such a brief document. The daily specials are clearly market related and always worth while. The wine list is much the same, short, interesting and reasonably priced. The service just cannot be bettered and despite the restaurant's small size one never has the feeling of being pressurised to leave a table before one has quite finished. Many other London eateries could learn a valuable lesson from this.
Great venue for lunch with
Great venue for lunch with friends or with business associates. The restaurant is a perfect size - not too big, and quite cozy. The menu was good and food just right. Staff very friendly and provide great service. The location is a very short walk from Aldgate East or Aldgate.
I took my parents there as
I took my parents there as they had come to London for the weekend. The food was fantastic, the service was outstanding, and whilst it was in a great setting, it was extremely relaxed and homely. If I had one fault with the meal was that the portion size was a little bit small.
Visit last week was probably
Visit last week was probably twelfth in last couple of years and I've never been disappointed. Short but varied lunch menu still made choice difficult and the three of us each had different starters and mains which were all excellent. Staff as always knowledgeable and helpful.
Went for our anniversary and this is the perfect setting. Small, intimate and quiet - you would never guess you were on such a busy road. The 2 waiting staff were friendly and so attentive. The food was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. We'll definitely be back.
Great Lunch venue
Always wanted to visit but never did - until last week.
Great choice and only a stones throw from the City so able to enjoy being away from the normal crowds.
Superb food and pleasure to take a guest who only enjoys the best!
Excellent service and food
Food was great, I had duck breast for starter, beef onglet for main and poached pear for dessert. All very delicious. I highly recommend the poached pear. The best thing about this restaurant is the service. The waitresses were very attentive. And the food was ready shortly after I placed the order. The environment is very relaxing and you can really have a good conversation with friends without shouting at each other, compared to some restaurants which play really loud music all the time. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Small, friendly, high quality
Not busy the Thursday lunchtime we were here (Easter holidays), but deserves to be full. One small mirrored dining room, good limited-choice lunch menu and wine list. Daily specials available. Water provided free. Very friendly and knowledgeable waitress, efficient service. Food (in our case fish) perfectly cooked. Despite celebrity-chef name attached, prices reasonable for this high quality (£12 - £15 for a main course 'big plate', good regional wines not ludicrously overpriced). 2 people, two courses, carafe of wine plus shared dessert wine and service came to £91. So not everyday eating for most, but good for more special occasions. Nice that you can walk out straight into a contemporary art exhibition. I'll be going again.
Ladies who lunched
Three of us had a fabulous lunch. The service was discreet and knowledgable, we were given excellent advice about our choice of wine. All of the food was delicious. We would certainly lunch here again.
Whitechapel Gallery offers fantastic seasonal food, highly recommended.
A short and quite simple menu
A short and quite simple menu and wine list but the food was beautifully cooked and presented and the evening was an understated success. We would definitely return
Great lunch for four at the Gallery Dining Room last Saturday. Attentive (but not in your face) service, high quality food in really nice surroundings at a reasonable price. Would definitely go again.
Lovely dining experience
A pre birthday meal with sisters, this was a great choice. I'm deaf with a cochlear implant, and huge noisy dining spaces make hearing impossible - here, the small intimate room made conversation much easier, and it was relaxing. The food was beautifully prepared and presented, and portion sizes were just right ( the steak special was particularly good). Delicious puddings, salted caramel and chocolate tart, and sticky toffee pudding. We all felt we would definitely come again. It was a lovely dining experience.
What a lovely experience.
What a lovely experience. I met a client for a fantastic lunch (cote du boeuf) and then took some time to look in the gallery afterwards. Very different from the norm and just slightly off the city of London track.
Whitechapel with smile
This place was a hidden gem amongst the surroundings. It is right next door to a underground subway perfect for the ease of travel. We were greeted with feel of being specially welcomed to a friendly and contemporary atmosphere. The food was excellent and freshly cooked. A perfect place to choose for a good feel factor.
A really great meal, each dish was good. The service was excellent. Highly reccomended after a stroll around tge gallery.
Very happy tastebuds.
At Whitechapel Gallery Dining Room you find a nice calm room in the middle of and at the same time sheltered from the hectic steets of the Eastend, the service is excellent, kind and attentive, -and then most imoprtant of all the food, that is so pure, simplictic and tastefull, that you leave with very happy and very satisfied tastbuds.
Thank you very much to the Whitechapel Gallery Dining Room for two great experience, one for lunch and one for dinner during my latest visit to London.
Exceeded expectations--sophisticated food, good value.
Superb food and service. Tables
Superb food and service. Tables a little too close together for an intimate lunch or if you have neighbours with loud voices.
First time, but will not be the las
Really pleasant surroundings and good service, and neither too overwhelming for a restaurant that has such a good reputation (owner/chef writes for the Guardian, I think)
Unusual and original venue
A unique venue in a very eclectic part of town. Inside a quiet haven with lovely food, attentive and friendly service. Good variety on the menu, lovely fresh food. All in all, just a super time.
Lovely lunch at Whitechapel Gallery
Really enjoyed Sunday lunch at Whitechapel Gallery. Great food, nicely designed surroundings (if perhaps a little small) and very good service. The restaurant was about half full when we visited and felt very pleasant - could be a little crowded and noisy if full
Really enjoyed our Sunday lunch
Delicious non-fussy food where the ingredients took centre stage, friendly but professional service, bottles of filtered water topped up non-stop, a super convenient location just a few metres from the entrance to Aldgate East tube station...what more could one want? Delighted with this gem and can't wait to take other friends there.
Ate here with 3 friends during the week and thought the food was very good, and value for money. Waiting staff were lovely and very personable. Only reason not to rate it higher is it is a small space so it feels a little crowded and when full it is quite noisy. However all in all that wouldn't put me off coming back.
Super lunch spot!
Went to the findings rooms for a business lunch for the first time, being just a 5 min walk from the edge of the city. The service was friendly and quick, the food delicious and slightly rustic. All of us thoroughly enjoyed out meals. What was nice was that the restaurant is fairly small with a mix if business diners and those just pooping in for a bite to eat after visiting the gallery. Amazing what you can find 'just off the beaten track',
A relaxing and unhurried atmosphere
A relaxing and unhurried atmosphere with good and friendly service. The menu is always interesting and the specials have been given thought. Good choices of wines. Yes!
A great venue for a business lunch or personal. Service was friendly and attentive without being over the top. The bread and olive oil was wonderful. I had the new beef shin with mash and kale, my guest the fish and chips. I usually expect small portions in upper market establishments but I actually struggled to eat the main lunch course. The beef was very tender, the mash was perfect, could have had more kale to offset the generous portion of meat! I almost rolled back to the office. My guest was very happy with the fish, and said the mushy peas and tartare sauce particularly stood out as fresh. Option of having carafe of wine as well as a full bottle is a great addition to a menu. No room for pudding which was a shame!
Angela's East end venue
The Whitechapel Gallery Dining Room is a pleasant oasis in London's East End and make a good alternative to many fine Curry Houses in the area. Angela Hartnett's menus offer a fine choice of interesting well prepared and presented meals.
Fantastic service, The waitress was happy to describe items on the menu and was very friendly. There was an interesting selection of dishes on the menu and the food was great quality. I will definitely be returning.
A very enjoyable meal, with
A very enjoyable meal, with excellent service. I found my risotto a little too salty, but that is probably just my taste. Two people in our party had the daily special (Cote do Boef) which was excellent. However we were not informed of its cost (almost twice the cost of other mains) when we ordered. The restaurant at lunchtime was busy but not full and had a good mix of clientele some business men others visitors to the gallery. Even with the expensive special the meal for three with wine, but no desert came to £140 which I rate as good value for the quality of service and food.
Lovely waiters. Very generous
Lovely waiters. Very generous and helpful going through the menu with us and helping us out. Food was great too! A lovely time at the Whitechapel Gallery Dining Room. A shame we didn't get to go see the gallery itself.
dependable as ever
We live locally and having a restaurant of this quality and informality on our doorstep mean we have been here all the time. The starters and specials vary and are always well-thought out and executed. As a main, unless going for a special, I pretty much alwys have the onglet, which on this occasion wasn't amazing, but that is by their own very high standards.
It's like a local diner to use and you can't say fairer than that. The quality plus lack of pretension suits me down to the ground, long may it continue. It seems to be a bit of a secret too!
