Stylish country resturant and hotel
This is the nearest smarter type of place to where I live. It has a very nice and cosy bar area for pre and post meal drinks. Enough but not too many options on the menu so they can do what they have very well. Staff are friendly and helpful, though we did have to ask for simple things like buuter for the bread.
Characterful, excellent food
Really attractive location and building, tables well spaced. Food excellent: imaginative meat, game, fish and vegetarian dishes. Wine list extensive, well-chosen and appropriately priced. Overall, rather too expensive for the standard of service. Staff are individually friendly, but too many small mistakes were made for a really high rating. Some staff ignored us on arrival, we were left with our coats on our laps in the cramped bar for 10 or 15 minutes, when there was a very pleasant sitting room available. Service was generally slow. We were billed twice for coffees and charged a la carte prices for a set of choices entirely on a set menu. The difference was only £3 but overall poor service let down the excellent food, wine and location.
Superb place for dining
Recently held a business dinner with a small number of my colleagues and the food, service and ambience were second to none. Can definitely recommend and I will be going back soon!
enjoyable birthday treat
Each year in December I treat my friend to lunch at Redcoats for her birthday. We both look forward to it. We enjoy the ambience and the food is excellent. I have never felt the need to look for anywhere else. It's an ideal place to relax during the build up to Christmas.
She reciprocates for my birthday in January. On that occasion we need cheering up during the winter gloom.
We went for lunch. Food was
We went for lunch. Food was very good and well presented. We will return. The only criticism would be that the cushions on the chairs had marks on them and needed to be replaced. Otherwise an enjoyable experience.
Redcoats has never let me or my family down in over 20 years. Friendly, comfortable and a pleasurable experience.
Another lovely Sunday lunch
I love Redcoats Farmhouse: always such a lovely experience. The house itself is quite simply stunning, the food is always very good and the staff very attentive. Would I go again: oh yes! Would I recommend: oh yes!
1. Excellent customer service
2. We were invited to sit in the pre-dinner bar and drinks orders taken which was good, coats were taken and were made to feel very welcome
3. My 6 colleagues thought their meals were excellent - only myself had a comment see below
4. I had fillet steak with steak pudding - steak was cold pudding hot - supposed to be as this?
brillant as ever
I love it here and very lucky as its just down the road. The place and staff are warm and friendly and the
food is just lovely
Outstanding location, great food
Very good food in an outstanding setting. We arrived early and enjoyed a bottle of red from the extensive wine list by the open fire. We were shown to our table as soon as it became available. Staff were attentive, swift and on hand whilst not being intrusive or over bearing.
A lovely evening, I highly recommend it.
My husband and I had booked
My husband and I had booked a table for a weekend valentines meal. The redcoats was recommended by a friend.
The building itself was like going back in time, It was so cosy and the atmosphere was spot on. We had a lovely meal. The food was absolutly gorgeous.
My husband and I eat at a lot of restaurants and this is one of our top 5.
Would deffinatly recommend it to anyone.
The staff were so pleasant and very well mannered which is a plus for me.
Nice atmosphere with quality food
Been here a couple of times with clients local to the area - first time it was okay, second time much better. You can't fault the service and ambience, put good food into the mix and you have the perfect dining place.
A Little Gem
We selected the restuarant from The Chilterns Good Food Guide for a special lunch and were not disappointed. Quaint venue , friendly courteous staff and a varied menu, all prepared to perfection. We hope to return in the summer months to dine al fresco.
excellent worth making the journey
Redcoats is an exceptional restaurant, high quality food and lots of it, good service and excellent ambiance. certain old world charm, make sure you bring an appetite as the portions are excellent, stand out dish is the steak and kidney pudding featuring a fillet steak. good wine list. Pleasant and entertaining management. Just about the best dining experience to be had in herts. Recommended.
We have been to Redcoats 4 times now and each time we were not disappointed. The staff there are so attentive without being too in your face and make the occasion special. The menu is varied and home cooked but the crowning glory are the desserts. Very gorgeous chocolate trifle and also the rice pudding was very nice too. Will definitely go again
Must visit Redcoats more often !
Never been disappointed with a visit to Redcoats.
The food is always very good.
The very extensive wine list is excellent.
POST EASTER MEAL
love coming here, very relaxed atmosphere, and local. The food is excellent and the wine list is like a novel!!
Would love to bring Mum for her Birthday in May & go for Christmas dinner.
Have now been to Redcoats on a number of occasions,as usual the food was delicious and the staff couldn't be friendlier or more helpful. Will certainly recommend to friends if they are looking for good food in an unpretentious enviroment.
Lovely gardens, great for enjoying a coffee or finishing that bottle of wine
Nice Sunday lunch
Ate in the beautiful conservatory. Nice place but the sun shone down through the roof so much that 2 of us got sunburnt heads!!!
REDCOATS - SUPERB AS USUAL
Fabulous venue and grounds, warm welcome, attentive service, fantastic food and the best baked cod I have ever eaten! Well done Redcoats
Nick Atkins and Heather Stirling
The food was well presented, ideal portion size, we like the option of small desert portions for those who cannot resist a third course.
Good menus choices, with a substantial wine list.
Good Food & Service
Had a meal with my wife here for the first time after hearing great things about the food, we werent disapointed from entering the restaurant to leaving you are very well looked after by the various members of the team. The ambience is very personal with the owner (assumed) taking time to speak with the majority of diners/guests to ensure satisfaction. The food was very good and plentiful, the portion sizes were just right as well. So many times I have been to a restaurant where the portion size suffers due to the perceived quality of the food. Glad to say this wasnt the case here!! This restaurant isnt the cheapest but as long as the quality is good I dont think many would mind paying the slight premium.
As expected, the Redcoats
As expected, the Redcoats Farmhouse was a great dining experience, slight problem with having our table on time, (we were seated 1hr 15mins late), never mind great food, expensive but great.
Food excellent. Service great.
Food excellent. Service great. Only negative was a loud party in the room that seemed to be oblivious to other diners' enjoyment and felt fine making a lot of noise. That said, we would recommend, the food is sublime.
Really enjoyed the experience.
Really enjoyed the experience. Staff very friendly and the food interesting and tasty. Beautiful setting with a garden that would have made sitting outside a delight if weather had permitted.
Very good food, beautifully
Very good food, beautifully presented. Lovely garden. Conservatory was very warm.
Our party of three struggled to order as there were so many dishes to choose from. The salmon was exquisite. We will be back!
Afternoon tea for 2
Loved the tasty sandwiches and all cakes bar the scones! service and venue very good would recommend it to friends
Great food and an amazing wine menu
My husband and I dined here last Saturday. The table service was very slow to begin with and we had to ask for bread as we seemed to have been forgotten in a corner. Post that item being remediated, the service was great from then on. Wine menu was excellent - large variety to chose from in both grape choice and price. The menu selection was also exceptional. Can highly recommended the cheese board although the waitress whilst friendly and helpful, was not aware of the cheese types. The cost of the cheese board is not cheap, thus it would be great to have a listing of the cheeses available.
Service was a little slow to start with but once remediated it was smooth sailing with both the food and wine being exceptional.
Great place to eat
You are made to feel welcome from the moment you step through the door, the ambiance is welcoming, relaxing and friendly. The food was delicious and the bill reasonable.
I highly recommend the Redcoats Farmhouse Hotel and will be dining there again.
Great food and atmosphere
We really enjoyed our visit to the Redcoats, the staff are friendly and the atmosphere is very relaxed. Our meals were delicious, very well cooked and full of flavour. Not a single thing to complain about... wonderful evening and we'll definitely go again.
Disabled facilities not in
Disabled facilities not in evidence and some steps to negotiate were difficult. BUT this was in no way against the establishment as it was an old residence however the other entrance was not offered to me had there been one and I had difficulty with some of the steps although guidance was offered. Marked the overall marking because of this point only in all other areas the accommodation , service, and food were excellent.
Good food friendly staff
Excellent food from sensible menu, access for disabled not obvious.
A Great Find ! Good food and staff
I booked this restaurant as were were feed-up with restaurants offering good quality food out of a packet! From the pictures the place exudes ambiance and we were not disappointed it was a special lunch for my mothers birthday. She was really taken with the artifacts that adorn the rooms, many of which brought back many memories to her and took great delight in reminiscing her past encounters with them.
The food was of exceptional quality, the presentation was excellent and the staff were attentive and helpful.
The best meal we have had out for a long time. We Shall be coming back.
One year after
The weather was favourable, the ambience was relaxing and the food was exquisite.
A La Carte dining at Redcoats
The staff were very welcoming and attentive, not overbearing though. It was our 10th wedding anniversary, so just the two of us, for a romantic evening. We ordered from the 'A La Carte Menu'. We ate in the conservatory, which overlooks the garden. The food was fantastic, worth every penny. We have already recommended to friends and family and even though we live a couple of miles away, are thinking about possibly booking a room and staying over.
We had booked a cab to take us home afterwards, but unfortunately someone else took our cab!!! The owner offered to drive us home, which was very sweet and unexpected!!!
But really, we cannot do the food justice by comments, it has to be tried!! We will definitely be going back!!!
Visited Stevenage for a business meeting with 2 colleagues. Happened upon Redcoats with no prior knowledge thanks to Top Table. Really excellent meal - helpful efficient service, great choice of food, terrific value. Sophisticated food in traditional quantities. Could only manage 2 courses and if I had room would have eaten the starter again (mixed wild mushrooms with garlic and cheese on toast) as a dessert it was so good. Or maybe not, because the desserts looked great as well. I had to stay on after the meal for a couple of hours and I just sat and worked in one of the cosy lounges - was even given a free espresso to keep me going. Can't wait for the next meeting!
Meal for Two
Really nice location and bulding has a touch of class with out being over the top. Service very good as is the food and the wine list. Real ale very good for a restaraunt too. Good selection to choose from all round.
A very nice evening all round i think a little on the dear side if im honest but will go again im sure a a speciel treat at £169.00 for two all in not something i could make a habit unfortunatly!
A wonderful lunch
We returned here in June for my wife's significant birthday - Having first dined here 25 years ago. We had a fantastic birthday evening with friends and we vowed to return for lunch.
Our meal from the lunch menu was everything we expected - Lovely quality food that was very well presented, attentive service without being rushed, and a great view of the beautiful gardens from our table in the conservatory. Excellent selection of wines - We had the South African Pinotage which complimented our meal perfectly.
Looking forward to finding another excuse to return soon.
My first Redcoats Farmhouse Meal
Having been referred by some of my Canadian friends I was prepared to be impressed, and I was. Seating was prompt and friendly as was the service, the food was excellent and arrived piping hot ( a personal measure of quality). It truly was a wonderful dining experience, and the comprehensive wine cellar was certainly appreciated.
Very nice selection on the menu - difficult to choose. We liked the relaxed atmosphere- no need to dress up unless you want to. Very friendly and helpful staff. We thought it was a bit on the expensive side, but everything was nice
This is a great place for a treat. It's our third visit and it is always special. Guests are treated well and the restaurant is just that little bit different. A classy, country feel to a lovely old building of distinction. I had delicious Chicken and Wild Mushrooms en croute with rosti. Splendid. The owner was thoughtful enough to telephone me in advance to advise us of road works and to take an alternative route. Highly recommended.
We had a wonderful evening at Redcoats celebrating my Husband's 50th birthday. Right from our arrival we were made to feel welcome, and when one of our party of 10 was delayed, the Staff were understanding and even brought out some canapés to eat with our drinks in the bar - a very nice touch we thought. Dinner was piping hot, delicious with excellent service.
A relaxed and enjoyable evening was had by all with great compliments from our guests!
This was a Birthday Sunday lunch for my wife and it was outstanding .
I would recommend this for any special occasion or event.
Perfect for our anniversary
It was a 1 year wedding anniversary , so we hoped for impeccable service, ambience, romance and to feel special. we got this at Redcoats. after a welcome glass of champagne by the open fire, we reminisced about our wedding, once we ordered our meals from the very extensive although i would say slightly expensive menu. we were offered a taster which as lovely. the Wine was superb and we were not over serviced. the room was a little cold, being the conservatory and would have benefited from some heaters but with all the food we soon warmed up. the Dessert of cherry cake was divine and we had a lovely meal.
Redcoats, near Hitchin
Absolutely wonderful meal - food outstanding, a warm welcome and friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommended if you would like to eat somewhere that is that little bit special. Lovely cosy, intimate atmosphere. We look forward to our next visit!
Great value for quality steak night
We went to 'Redcoats for their Wednesday night steak evening. You can have an 8oz rump with excellent chips for just £15 or pay more for a different cut. Before the meal is served a small, beautifully presented taster of two other rare cuts are served as a starter.
They really know how to cook steak well at Redcoats and I recommend the steak night as good quality and good value.
Excellent steak night on 15/11
delicious shared pate starter followed be steaks that were tasty, tender and cooked to perfection. We look forward to the next such special night
Quirky bar and waiting area.
Quirky bar and waiting area. Lovely to sit by an open fire whilst waiting for table and choosing your meal. Restaurant is bright and airy and tables are not crammed together.
Delightful restaurant & hotel
We had lunch and stayed overnight, having breakfast. Lunch offered a good choice, the ambience and the service was friendly and of very high quality. The food itself was delicious, and the breakfast, which provided an excellent choice, in the morning incredible - filling and tasty to put it mildly. The overall impression was of a charming place with very friendly staff. And they are dog-friendly too.
