Didn't know such an amazing place existed on our doorstep! Great food, great service, all perfect. Can't recommend enough.
Thackeray's never fails to disappoint. We were made to feel special by the great service adn exceptional food. The lunch menu is fantastic value and I will return.
Fine dining at its best
We had a birthday celebration lunch with a mixed age group from 15 to 50. The Herefordshire beef as a main course was first rate, medium rare, sliced into small circles with a rich gravy. Other main courses included hake and trout which were beautifully presented with pureed vegetables. The flavours of all my courses are still memorable. One member of our party picked cheese for pudding. It was a large portion with a good mixture of soft, hard, creamy, blue cheeses. When the bill came we realised the plate was for three, hence the size! The 3 course lunch menu is around £20 per person but by the time you add drinks and extras it's around £40 per person. It's the perfect restaurant for a special occasion
Well worth a visit
We have been to the restaurant on a number of occasions, and would certainly recommend it to anyone. British weather being what it is, there are probably limited options for using the outdoor dining area but on our recent visit we struck lucky. There is plenty of room inside too.
The food is of a very good standard and well presented. We have only had one disappointing dessert which we felt did not come up to their usual standards and which they were more than happy to switch. On our recent visit all courses were full of flavour.
If you want to sample their food without paying an rm and a leg, try their lunch menus - three options for each course and very sensibly priced.
This one word says it all, if you have not been to Thackerys then you really should. Service is exceptional and the food is amazing. You will not be disappointed, I can not wait to go again
We wanted to book a restaurant as a special occasion to celebrate our son's graduation and were not disappointed with our choice of Thackeray's. The food quality, range of choice, wine list and service were superb. We particularly like and approve of the use of local produce. We were made very welcome and the team served us with a sense of humour while being totally professional. We particularly enjoyed the Quail Kiev which two of us chose and the Lamb and Beef dishes hit 'the spot' with the men. Gooseberry souffle for dessert! Wow!! We will definitely be back to try more dishes as it was difficult to choose.
Thackeray's was fantastic!
Thackeray's was fantastic! It was a really historical setting in the oldest house in Tunbridge Wells and we were sat in a small room with just two other tables looking out of the huge bay window - it practically felt like private dining! The waiter was very attentive while still allowing us space and privacy. The food was beautifully presented and very tasty with a huge range of flavours on each plate. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for somewhere to go on a special occasion, it was lovely!
anorther successful lunch
We have been customers of Thackerys for several years now and our visits go in waves as we try out other places. Once again we had an excellent lunch with some fantastic tastes and mixes. The quantities are modest, but with a 3-course meal you leave satisfied and not bloated. At 53 yrs old that is precisely what we are seeking as is the agreeable service and very pleasant ambiance. With some self discipline the value for money is exceptional, especially at lunchtime. I have eaten in many pubs where their 'pub-grub' main courses costs the same as 3 courses at Thackerys who also offer up an 'amuse bouche' and home cooked bread of the top order. Expect a civilized and calm experience with delightful food.
Fine food at an affordable
Fine food at an affordable price at lunchtimes, Monday to Saturday
Great food for great a great price
We had mother/daughter lunch didn't want it to cost a fortune. Thackerays was superb great value for money.
The service was efficient, friendly and not intrusive but attentive.
Would highly recommend . We have been many times and are never disappointed.
Really enjoyable meal and a good location in Tunbridge Wells
Excellent food and value for
Excellent food and value for money lunchtime option (Monday to Saturday) allowing diners to enjoy good food without a hefty bill. My friend really enjoyed the cauliflower jus and hake and the ox cheek was divine.
Not the easiest place to find (despite the address being 85 London Road) it is on a small side road adjacent. There is no parking, so either get a taxi or be prepared to move your car half way through the meal.
Art on a plate
Thackeray's was absolutely perfect for the occasion (a treat for my mother and some family friends for mum's birthday).
All of our party (bar one) chose from the set menu, which was very good value given the standard of the food itself, its beautiful presentation and the extra bits that came on top! The building itself is incredibly characterful and although there was a couple sat next to us with a young baby, the restaurant still maintained a lovely serene atmosphere. Would thoroughly recommend.
we had a very good experience with our dinner and the food was outstanding. i took clients for an important closing dinner and they were very satisfied and they enjoyed their experience too. It made it easy for them to sign the deal. I recommend it to other dinners.
Nice food as ever, but....
Here for the chef's tasting menu and the food was great as ever. Service was pretty lousy however. Suspect we may have suffered from 'new boy syndrome' as the offender was not someone I'd seen before. Also didn't appreciate that they'd run out of our wine selection. May be forgiveable if it was an off the wall choice but the Kiwi Sauvignon? Come on chaps. Could and should do better. Chapter 1 at Locksbottom a better (relatively) local gastro choice in my opinion.
Another great night at Thackeray's!
Yet again another great night at Thackeray's. Service is fantastic, food delicious and nice relaxed formal dining atmosphere. Will definitely be back!
I decided to book a table
I decided to book a table for the evening of my 5th wedding anniversary. I informed the restaurant I would like a well located table due to the special occasion.
Upon arrival I was informed that we were seated in the private dining room. This was very over whelming and made my wife feel very special and over and above our expectations. This standard continued throughout the entire evening.
We were greeted by our server and throughout the whole night they were attentive, polite, courteous and extremely knowledgeable of the both the food and wine menus.
The ambience was exceptional and one of the most pleasurable dining experiences I have experienced in a quite a few years.
A totally five star experience from beginning to end.
Had a great evening, the revive is excellent and the food fantastic. You are made to feel welcome and comfortable and the waitress was very attentive. At no point do you feel at all rushed and we were there for just over two hours. We mentioned in passing that it was our anniversary and at the end the chocolates came out and on the plate they had written Happy Aniversary in chocolate which was a very nice touch.
An enjoyable lunch in the courtyard until the wasps arrived. Together with a number of other diners we retreated inside but not before my wife was stung.
The staff were very helpful and attentive.
Shame the deset menu on the
Shame the deset menu on the Table D'hote is so limited.
Good French Maitre d'
Good food and good wine list. Excellent service and pleasant ambience. Always busy
We had not been going to Thackerays
We had not been going to Thackerays as often as in the past. This was because whilst the cooking standards were high the service was grim. We were pleasantly surpised to find that Gary has returned and whilst it will take a while the service will improve.
As for our lunch.....wonderful!
Excellent Dinner. We had the chef's tasting menu which was superb ( I hate tomatoes but loved the heirloom tomato salad, can't say fairer than that!). Scallops, duck etc was all top notch. Great service, on hand but not looking over the shoulder. Very friendly and professional. Met the head man Richard Phillips in the bar and he gave us plenty of his time to chat. Drank the house white (can't remember its name sorry) and that was priced very reasonably and was excellent
Birthday for Four
We have been to Thackeray's many times and have always enjoyed the experience, start to finish. This time we weren't disappointed by the atmosphere, excellent and cordial service and selection for lunchtime. However, the food was a bit less than the fantastic quality we had previously enjoyed. The amuse-bouche of roasted cod bits with a non-descript puree was not entirely amusing - more overwhelming. I found hard gristle bits in my chicken ballotine starter. The duck was not as tender as I would have hoped and challenged my jaws to surrender. My partner's duck looked quite different to mine, as though they forgot the niceties of the dollops around the plate to decorate. Lastly the tarte tatin base was nearly impenetrable. Could do better!
My husband bought me a voucher for the taster menu at Thackery's and we ate there on a Friday night. We had excellent food and the service was brilliant. If we could afford it we would definitely eat there again. Highly recommended.
Could not fault anything. Exactly what is to be expected from a "starred" restaurant. Ambiance, service and food quality all beyond reproach. Parking is a bit of a challenge but the experience is well worth the effort.
Lovely birthday treat!
My husband took me to Thackeray's for my 30th birthday treat & we had a fantastic meal. I had never been before & had always wanted to go. Ambience was nice it has a really nice cosy feel to it and the service was amazing they were so friendly and attentive.
We had one of the set menus as it was a Wednesday eve and the food was fantastic great flavours. Would highly recommend for a special occasion really cannot fault anything!
It was a special dinner celebrating
It was a special dinner celebrating both boys' birthdays on the same day - one being 30. We hadn't been to Thackerays before, but it was a lovely experience, and would certainly like to go again.
Great service and ambiance,
Great service and ambiance, staff were attentive and helpful while not resorting to overly formal obsequiousness.
We visited for lunch and took
We visited for lunch and took advantage of the 'special lunch menu' which offers incredible value.
My wife was very happy with the starter of pork belly with eel. I enjoyed sea bream as my main course. The cooking was excellent.
On an even happier note Craig had returned as assistant (?) restaurant manager and with Gary Beach at the helm (again) the service is getting back to where it was. A combination of good, friendly service and good food put Thackerays back on track. Thankfully!
Good as ever
We had been worried by recent online reviews which suggested the service had gone down hill badly since our last visit a year or so ago. However, we were pleased to find that the service was friendly and helpful but a bit ragged at the edges. In a way this didn't matter because it made the whole thing more human and less slick. As an example, the liquorice icecream was missing from two of the dessert plates. After querying this the missing items turned up separately with the apologies of the chef. We lunched in mid October 2013.
Deserves its Michelin Star
The food at Thackeray's is beautifully balanced and staggeringly attractive in its presentation.
Foreign friends have often preferred Richard Phillips' food to that at more famous London restaurants. Thackeray's offers modern British food at its best – elegant and poised.
Sunday lunch is superb value, and is always very busy. The roast and the Yorkshire pudding are there; but with an elegant twist. On weekdays (closed Monday) there is an excellent short lunch menu which is also excellent value. For about £20, including service, this has to be the best value in the town.
I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough.
Booked lunch to celebrate a family birthday. The lunch menu is superb value. The portions are possibly a little smaller than the a la carte options but then that just means you can go for three courses. And when the food's this good that's what you want. Loved the autumnal theme. Game, mushrooms, fruits and spices. What could be better.
Thursday night dining
A very pleasant experience on a Thursday night. We had the market menu which was exceptional value, with one excellent dish (sole), two good dishes (cod cheeks, quail) and one acceptable dish (rabbit). The pudding was similarly good and the cheeses well-kept. The wine list is shorter than I expected but with some interesting bottles reasonably priced (an American Gewürztraminer, for example). Service was very friendly, if a little amateurish - we had to correct our bill three times - but not in a way that had a bad effect. I would cheerfully go again and would strongly recommend Thackeray's to someone looking to eat out in Kent.
We booked a table for 4 for a special birthday meal, as we arrived we were greeted courteously, our coats taken and shown to our table, even though we were early. We ordered our aperatifes, the waiter was obviously confused by the Pastis request and we were asked 3 times by different waiters to confirm! We were not rushed to order, but the food came quickly (not too quickly) with just enough breaks in between. The waitress was attentive all night, filling up our glasses as required. The food was delicious, every seperate item on the plate tasted spectacular, even the sauce/juse. The portions were not huge, but we all felt full (but not stuffed) at the end of the meal, overall a fantatsic experience, thank you Thackerays!
Great dinning experience
Professional and attentive service, tastefully decorated restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere. A good range of wines and spirits, an excellent menu which delivered on presentation and flavour. It was a lovely evening and we went away having really enjoyed our dinning experience.
just a little bit special
We had a lovely long lunch here for our 10th wedding anniversary and it was excellent. The service was excellent, the food outstanding and the ambiance a lovely mixture of relaxed and formal.
We are used to eating out a lot in London and really loved that at Thackeray's they took the time to give a more personal service. Highly recommend.
excellent food..bill not too scary!
Granted we chose the table d'hote menu and I wasn't drinking as driving ..the bill came to £80 for 2 .
Savoury panna cottas are the chef's thing of the moment it seems...delicious .
Tuesday evening it's never going to be lively but there were only 2 tables eating so the atmosphere was lacking a little but great music in the background so all was not lost.
A beautiful character filled restaurant. Varied menu (a la carte). Our selected dishes were very well executed and presented. The cooking was excellent with great depth of flavour. Service was slick and professional but remained warm and welcoming. The wine list is well chosen but I felt the white wine choices could have been wider. We also noted that the fixed price lunch menu offered exceptional value. Recommended!
This was the second time we have enjoyed a pre theatre matinee lunch with friends. Once again it was perfect. The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff could not be faulted neither could the set lunch. Unfortunately we had not allowed quite enough time and had to arrange a swift departure before coffee, but even this was dealt with by the Maître D with quiet efficiency.
There is no question, we will return.
Good menu choices and quality meals delivered by friendly professional service.
Had a fantastic meal at Thackeray's - opted for the Market Menu which was very reasonably priced considering the food served. Nice surroundings and decided to have a cocktail at the bar whilst we perused the menu and ordered. A la carte menu was considerable more expensive but there was more choice and I think the portion sizes would be bigger. Having said that, 3 courses from the Market Menu along with the Amuse Bouche and "pre-dessert" was just about right for us.
Would definitely recommend and will be going back.
Our favourite restaurant
Always fab., excellent food and good value at lunchtime.
A relaxing meal
As all of our visits to one of Richard Philips' restaurants, this one was a delight. The ambiance is quiet and the dining room tastefully decorated and well lit. The food is carefully presented and served, beautifully cooked and has a range of dishes and tastes that you would not find at a normal restaurant or serve at home. The staff are vey attentive and friendly. We will always elect to go to Thackerays for a special occasion meal, it is an affordable culinary experience.
Outstanding service food and
Outstanding service food and wine. A total experience to be not to be missed
a first visit, already slightly marred by a choice of a table at 7pm or 9pm - we chose 7pm and expected a crowd but there were only half a dozen other diners until 9pm - the advice from the staff was "never use the online booking system - always phone".
Our scallops followed by venison were very good. The cheese board was also good, but why a price supplement? Where is the extra cost to the restaurant?
And why are wines by the glass so expensive? Drivers can't get involved in bottles and I worked out that six glasses (i.e. one bottle equivalent) would cost approximately three times the price of a bottle. Again, where is the extra cost?
It was a rare pleasure to be served a coffee that didn't ruin the evening - well done!
Lovely lunch at Thackerays
Had lunch at Thackerays on Saturday 30 November. The service was extremely good, attentive but not overbearing. Contemporary decor in lovely old building. Food was excellent and beautifully presented, we had the set lunch menu (choice of two or three courses), didn't order any extras and it was absolutely enough for us, just comfortably full! Overall a good experience and I would thoroughly recommend.
Amazing Apricot Soufflé !
My husband and daughter went for Sunday lunch and had a fantastic expereince - the waiters were just the right balance of attenitive and discreet, they were very well informed about each dish and were honest about their reccomendations for us. Each of us had different dishes and would happily have traded any of them - with the exception of my Apricot Soufflé. This had a hazelnut sauce that was delicately poured into the centre of it - truly sublime. Next time we go, I'll try very hard to persuade them to do it again for me.
Best meal of 2013
We went for the first time this week and we can't fault it. The lunch menu is excellent value and the food is exemplary. We'll be returning.
This is the second time we
This is the second time we have been for a special lunch, and as tempting as the set menu was, we opted for a la carte. We were not disappointed, the food is excellent and creative. A great restaurant for any special occasion, we are going to make a huge effort to try the dinner menu, once we have found a babysitter in the area!
