Criterion Restaurant GOOD and Bad
Love this place, friendly and efficient staff. We arrived early for service so indulged in cocktails before being shown to our table which was a bench settee against a wall which was okay until halfway through our meal when another couple were seated right next to us sharing the bench settee which left a bit of a sour taste as i am sure both couples felt uncomfortable,( there were free tables within the restaurant). The Pumpkin and Cinnamon soup was delicious and the mains and sweets were also lovely. The atmosphere is relaxed and its difficult to believe that the madness of Piccadilly is just the other side of the revoving door. The Criterion is a must for us whenever we visit London
One to remember
We celebrated our recent engagement here with my family.
The Criterion staff looked after us extremely well. The food and setting were stunning. Victorian London at it's finest.
Thank you to everyone at The Criterion. You were brilliant.
The dining room is one of the nicest in London. At lunchtime it is possible to experience it with a good value set meal. The choice of dishes is not huge, but all our food was excellent. We were on a tight deadline, and the service was very smooth.
Lovely dinner with friends
I have been to the Criterion a few times recently but the friends I met there this week had not been for years. They were pleasantly surprised. The decor is gorgeous, the restaurant was humming and the service was (generally) very good. We had booked the set menu through top table - lovely choices, very good food and excellent value. We had to wait a little for our table and throughout the night there were a few longer than necessary waits and then conversely an over zealous wine waiter who poured wine into glasses without asking (thereby mixing them) and then splashed some. But he quickly sorted a discount and none of this spoilt our evening. Definitely recommend for a great evening out in excellent location.
Beautiful restaurant, was like stepping back in time as we walked through the doors. Can imagine Sir Arthur Conan Doyle sitting having 'Tiffin' whilst creating 'Sherlock Holmes'. Staff friendly & attentive, food was lovely & reasonable on the set price menu. Booked through top table & got a free prosecco each as well. A great prelude to going next door to see 'The 39 Steps' which was wonderful too.
Outstanding surroundings with
Outstanding surroundings with all original features, tastefully updated to include a lovely bar area. Dining area food, service and style was, I think, up there with the best and to find a standard set menu at £20 for 2 courses, £23 for 3, a pleasant surprise. We were spoilt for choice on each course on the imaginative set menu, and no chicken dish to be seen. The main course lamb ragout gnocchi was one of the best I have ever eaten. No sticky gnocchi dumplings, they were light, slightly toasty almost, and the sauce fantastic. I would recommend to anyone.
What a gem!
The first reaction when you walk into this place is wow! Who knew a spectacular place like this existed amongst the most busy tourist hub right in the middle of Piccadilly Circus. But the thing is when you walk in, you feel like you've been transported to an upmarket restaurant in Paris or Rome with its super high ceilings, marble walls and artwork and the hustle and bustle from outside is worlds away! The service couldn't be any better, they were tentative to the right amount and very friendly. The food was as good as you would expect from a place like this, it was superb! My friend loved it so much she booked it for the following week for her work dinner. A definite recommendation without a doubt.
Very good food, great value
Never disappointed at the criterion, where I took mum. Nice setting, live music, and good food.
Had a lovely pre-theatre dinner
Had a lovely pre-theatre dinner in fabulous surroundings. Great service from check-in to paying the bill, wonderful food at a good price. The pianist was excellent too! Will definitely dine here again!
the ceiling is exquisite and
the ceiling is exquisite and the lighting so flattering.
cocktails to die for.
very special <3
Impeccable service, great food,
The toptable deal for a friday night was amazing. We were a group of 5 girls. Most of the group turned up late but we weren't made to feel like we were going to be rushed out. Also one girl was a vegetarian and also did not eat egg and the only vegetarian option on the set menu was a pasta dish which had egg, so the kitchen made her a special dish and also changed the pudding to not include pudding without charging her extra or making her feel bad. The staff were very friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The venue itself is lovely inside with spectacular vaulted ceilings and low lighting with live background music. The food itself was great especially for the deal. We had a fantastic night.
The food was good like average good restaurants. What I was impressed about actually was their atmosphere. The architecture was beautiful and made me feel like I was back in the old days of palaces. Lovely luxurious setting and nice live music (piano & singing) made it perfect.
Also, the waiter was kind enough to get someone who could recommend me a good wine which I was very satisfied about.
steak not worth the extra £4
I have lunch at this restaurant at least 3 times a year, so last time was a bit disappointing. Firstly we were served Bellini instaed of our free champagne. Secondly, having paid the extra £4 for the steak, which was previously excellent, I had great difficulty in eating the rather gristly and hard piece I was given. On complaining about it afterwards, I was simply told "sorry".
I will leave this lovely restaurant for a long time before I return.
Splendour in Piccadilly
Fabulous gold mosaic ceilings,,Victorian flamboyance bang in the middle of Piccadilly. Tradition, excellent quiet service, very good food from an outstanding value dinner menu. A delightful experience. Highly recommended.
The food was great - and the
The food was great - and the service was OK, it was busy and we had to keep calling and reminding for drinks we'd ordered.
We had the £20 menu and didn't realise the 2 glasses of red wine we ordered were £9.50 each, and a simple bottled beer was £6 - so our bill was a lot more than expected! However it really is a unique and beautiful environment so if it is a special occasion, I would recommend for the grand experience!
What a fantastic experience. Top Class Service with wonderful front of house service. The food was adorable. The surroundings are out of this world. Good value for money
An elegant haven right in the middle of London with attentive staff, warm atmosphere and great food. Amazing to gaze around the art deco inerterior and despite its vast size, low noise emission from fellow diners voices or crockery. A little majic must be working!
Really lovely experience.
Beautiful restaurant, lovely food
I visited The Criterion with a friend last week and we had a lovely experience. Firsly the restaurant is just beautiful! We started with a couple of cocktails in the bar which were delcious, if a little smaller than usual. Then were seated in the restaurant for dinner. We had the set menu with a prosecco cocktail and were pleased with the choices on the menu and had difficulty choosing. The food was delcious and we were plesantly surprised to be given some mini brownies at the end of the meal, even though we hadn't ordered a dessert. Service was friendly and very helpful - we would definitely return.
Honestly, the room is just so brilliant, it has to be seen to be believed. The pre-theatre menu is a great deal in a gorgeous setting and handy for most shows. The food was decent, with dessert being a particular highlight. They always have a vego option so that's very convenient. Will definitely be back
The loveliest dining room in London
Had a lovely dinner here from the set menu. Although the place was really busy, we weren't rushed and in fact only left past midnight. The food itself was excellent. Portions weren't large but they were beautifully presented. With a bottle of wine and coffees plus service total bill was just £90. Would definitely recommend for a date or special occasion.
A Lovely way to start the evening
We were a party of four. Pre theatre it was good to be able to book a table for 1730 with the full menu available
On entering we were warmly greeted and shown to our table.
The service was efficient and very professional
The food was just superb and the staff were very attentive but not overwhelming.
We were able to enjoy a very relaxing and pleasuring time and it was soon 1915
The bill was as expected. Not too expensive for the delights we had enjoyed
We left to enjoy a very good evening at the theatre in just the right frame if mind.
Great night out
efficient friendly service in magnificent surroundings. Great location for post theatre dinner. Good value menu. Pianist nice touch.
I hadn't been to the Criterion for a couple of years and had forgotten what a lovely place it is. I won't be waiting for another two years to return! Lovely attentive service and timing was impeccable allowing us to depart for the theatre in plenty of time without feeling rushed. Good choice of food on the menu too, and the offer of a glass of prosecco plus two courses for £20 was great value.
Excellent food and service.
Excellent food and service. Great venue. Would definitely go back. Made our romantic evening even more enjoyable.
Possibly my favourite restaurant
Last night we had another fabulous meal at The Criterion. We eaten here several times and the food is simply perfect every time.
We started with a couple of lovely cocktails. The champagne punch has quite a kick so look out :-) We mixed and matched our good from both the pre theatre and a la carte menu, and I have to say that both menus are gorgeous. The duck was the star of the pre theatre menu, while the seafood linguine with halibut was probably the best of the a la carte.
Can't recommend this place enough. It's glamorous, gastronomic and yet still quite affordable. Just go now. Drop whatever you're doing and go now.
Lovely food and great atmosphere as always. A little oasis in the heart of London.
Very welcoming. Food is good,
Very welcoming. Food is good, the ambiance is very good too. Another good experience at The Criterion
Arrived and instantly relaxed, such a spectacular space, that it never fails to sparkle. The food was wonderful and the service exactly what was needed attentive, but not intrusive. The only negative point is that its dining in close quarters, the tables are very close together, but this is forgotten when the food arrives.
The ambience and décor are
The ambience and décor are fantastic as well as the personal service. Had the set menu and was fantastic food at fantastic value. Will definitely go back and recommend. Our table was fantastic but only a small minor criticism is that many tables for 2 are too close together but this restaurant so good would not stop me coming back.
My first visit but not my last
We chose the criterion for a special occasion , we were not disappointed , the greeting , service , and quality of food
Surpassed our expectations. We will certainly return and recommend to our friends. Well done and thank you for a

The Criterion, Piccadilly
I went to the Criterion with some friends to celebrate my friend's birthday. I mentioned briefly that we were celebrating and the staff couldnt have been nicer, wishing her well and making us all feel special! We all ate off the 2 course set menu with prosecco, which is great value. All the dishes were fantastic (I loved the chicken main course in particular), but I just wish we saved some space to try the desserts. We'll be sure to return!
Had a good meal here - setting was beautiful, food was very nice, even had some live music! Service was very friendly.
Our lunch at The Criterion
Our lunch at The Criterion was excellent value with the offer. Its a beautiful restaurant & service & food were both very good.
Perfect early supper
The Criterion is a wonderful contrast to the madness of Piccadilly Circus. Set menu is very good value and the service was excellent. Will definitely return.
The Criterion restaurant is really "another world" from the hussle and bustle of Piccadilly outside its revolving door! Unique ambience and opulent decor, great food and service, amazing "fixed menu" price. Would highly recommend it.
Would recommend the restaurant
Would recommend the restaurant for pre theatre. Lovely restaurant and service was excellent.
excellent Pre theatre dinner
Our party of 4 enjoyed a pre '39 steps' dinner at the Criterion. The location is perfect for this, its right next door. The restaurant itself was stunning, the roof in particular. We had an added bonus booking through toptable, complementary prosecco as we decided our food. The food itself was mostly excellent. We skipped starters and went straight to mains. Most were excellent, particularly the lamb. The salmon dish was undercooked for our tastes though, it was like sushi in the middle. It was fine for me but my mother wasnt too keen. We also felt the portion sizes were a little small, but then we did go for the cheaper fixed price menu! The desserts were absolutely superb. special mention to the bramley apple crumble... Yummy!
A big thank you
Booked The Criterian for my parents 38th anniversary celebration so I made a special request for a nice table in advance.
They have arranged a lovely table in the centre of the restaurant which we can clearly see all the great decor around us. All staff were extremely cheerful and helpful. Food was amazing too. When it came to desert time about 8-10 of staff came to our table with the cake and made an anniversary greeting to my parents!!!! How lovely!!!! We all had a very enjoyable evening and surly for my parents especially!
My guests and I were impressed with the grand interior of the restaurant, the food was beautifully presented and it was the perfect place for us to get together for a special occasion. It was excellent value and we felt very decadent. A big bonus for us was that we were able to talk and hear each other - no loud music, which made our dining a real pleasure.
What glorious surroundings
Another delightful evening at The Criterion, soaking in the history and the sumptuous meal. One of my party had never been but now intends to return. A hidden gem that so many people just walk past!
It was my second visit to The Criterion, the first being a pre Saturday matinee lunch, this time an early evening pre theatre supper. It was my friend's first visit. We had the '2 course Set Menu' with four choices per course. The service was excellent and everything we had to eat was delicious. The beautifully decorated Christmas trees were a bonus in what is already a lovely venue - even Lady Edith is a fan!
Good experience. Slow to start but service picked up. Food excellent. Overall v good.
A nice venue. Meal was good. Service was a bit slow, but it was a Friday night.
A pleasant experience
Excellent food at great value. Service was mostly good, one of several waitresses was a bit casual however all good overall. the barbershop quartet provided a fantastic evening of music.
A Bazantine jewel box
One of London's most beautiful venues it the very heart of the West End. Good food and service and hardly surprising that when I was there for lunch on a Tuesday the restaurant was almost full.
To any visitor to London I would say it is a 'must visit' venue.
service could have been a
service could have been a bit more attentive but the food and ambiance was lovely.
Excellent Christmas meal with a couple of friends. Service was spot on and food excellent. Wonderful ambiance as it is a beautiful venue and was enhanced by pianist and double bass player.
The Criterion is well placed
The Criterion is well placed for theatre-goers and their set-price lunch menu won't break the bank - although the main course portions are not very large, so side orders are sometimes needed, thus bumping up the bill a little. The complimentary sparking apperitiv for Toptable diners was a pleasant surprise, as I hadn't noticed its inclusion when I made my booking.
The Criterion is a grand setting for any occasion. The food is good, the service is attentive without being too pushy and there has always been a good ambiance. One of my personal favourites.
Criterion at Piccadilly - great!
A great meal with a set of clients and they did a birthday cake for one of my guests as a desert, which worked really well
