The well stocked pantry
Expectations ran high. The reviews beforehand, coupled with a personal recommendation, plus the occasion (celebratory meal for an engagement) and the fact the gang that met at Uni 20years ago had not been re-united for some time, meant we needed (and demanded) somewhere special.
The Modern Pantry delivered.
Good ambience - lively, buzzing space - with subtle understated decor. Great range of beautifully executed dishes and low key service meant we could kick back, enjoy and focus on each other.
The crab rarebit was superb!
Lovely Birthday Brunch
We had a lovely birthday brunch at modern Pantry on Saturday 21/09. The menu is extensive but missing a french toast option.
I enjoyed the prawn omelette which lived up to its reputation and despite it lacking visual appeal, was delicious. The staff were lovely and friendly and managed our table well - even when I requested new toast as I cannot eat butter and the toast was pre-buttered.
Venue lacked a bit of atmosphere - rooms are large and with all white decor can lack warmth.
Overall I would recommend modern pantry.
Nice setting and a good brunch
Nice experience in this converted house. Great location. They serve coffee from Caravan so no need to queue up the road for that!
I like the informal atmosphere and unusual ingredients on the menu, though it is getting a bit repetitive now and they need to be more adventurous with the menu, but thats because I go so often.
Relaxed, buzzy - interesting menu
Six of us had brunch on Sunday. Sitting in a corner, with the window slightly open, it was a delightful way to spend a couple of hours chatting and eating. The room (upstairs) has a Scandinavian feel, with tables well set out. Bloody Mary in a jug is excellent with a real kick. Everyone liked their food, especially the pancakes and the rendang beef. I would raise a quibble over the service. It needs to be raised a level to qualify for an excellent experience overall. Clearing plates away should be a trigger for the staff to ask if we would like anything else, like coffee. The diner can always ask to wait, but it shouldn't be the diner's job to ask - and then be told by a (busy) waiter "yes, but I have to do this first". As if.
Delicious, modern British food
A great British menu, with a nice selection of fish, vegetarian and meat dishes. All 6 of our party enjoyed their meals and the restaurant ambience. 1st floor dining room is a little quieter, making it ideal for business meals. Would recommend.
As recommended by Gilian Anderson..
I was looking for somewhere to go for lunch with my Mum and 11 week old son. Whilst flicking through ES magazine I saw that Gillian Anderson recommended the Modern Pantry alongside Ottolenghi (which I love)
The food was fantastic, creative and eclectic. The staff couldn't have been more accommodating and picked a table that was particularly suitable so that my son could lie in his pram next to us. Whilst the restaurant was full of friends and business people at lunch, I never felt uncomfortable having a small child in such a venue
Great business Brunch
Staff here are top line. Nothing is too much trouble. I changed the order around and they didn't bay an eyelid - all smiles and professional service.
Will be going back soon.
Consistent innovative excellence
Wonderful food. Attentive and relaxed service. Cuisine that is both new and fully grounded in the great traditions of the world.
Breakfast menu very similar
Breakfast menu very similar (if not identical) to weekend brunch menu so definitely one to try if looking for weekday brunch, though only offered until 11am. Beautiful restaurant with delicious fresh food.
Worth a visit for a perfect breakfast - homey feeling early in the morning, which is hard to find, when it's with the sophistication The Modern Pantry has.
Perfect Afternoon Tea
I booked this Afternoon Tea for our first day in London. Since I went there with my boyfriend, I was looking for a sleek modern location and I found it!! The Modern Pantry is a cosy modern location. The Afternoon Tea was served on an oldschool etagere and the tea was served in different tea pots. The finger food was delicious and had a modern twist. We loved the mixture of salty and sweet and the extravagant flavors. I would definitely recommend this place!! Service was very friendly and obliging.
Fantastic as always
The food at Modern Pantry is always fresh and very tasty. The service is good and the vibe is lively. For the quality of the food, the value is one you'll find hard to beat. Lunch and dinner options are plentiful and the brunches are always packed so book early.
A charming place with fresh, delicious food and hearty breakfast menu.
Few veggie options, but great!
This review is from a vegetarian's point of view, so take that for what you will. There was one starter and one main that were vegetarian, so my choices were limited. Both courses were excellent, and I received some great advice on what wines to pair with my dishes. Cute place, and a good experience! I'll be back -- especially would like to try them for brunch.
Booked a 7.45pm table, running slightly late so rang forwards and had a lovely response telling us that a large group was arriving at 8pm just to let us know but otherwise it was fine. Great choice of wines. Superb variety in the food which the online menu doesn't reflect. Service was decent - and given the number of people there I thought it flowed well. I would certainly go again and I'm excited to try a lunch there : )
Great food - one of the most delicious breakfasts I've had! And really good service. Would definitely recommend!
Fresh and cheerful - the food and servers. Loved it.
Absolutely delicious afternoon tea!
Beautiful little cafe is perfect for afternoon tea. Very creative and perfectly executed. White peach bellinis to start. The bread used for sandwiches was excellent! Sandwich fillings were different and of a very high quality - roast tomato, feta and basil then poached salmon with avocado. Brilliant cakes - a little lemon and almond cake and cherry and chocolate brownie. A baby eton mess in a shot glass with poached pears was outstanding. Matcha scones with cherry jam and clotted cream were delicious. The range of teas is excellent as was the service - friendly and polite. The only negative was that the atmosphere could be a little more cosy, but really just a tiny detail noted on a very grey and rainy day. GO! You won't regret it.
Great tea, for a typical london
Great tea, for a typical london afternoon tea. Amazing price, beautiful place.
spontaneous romantic dinner
I booked very late through toptable and my wife and I had a lovely spontaneous dinner together - the food was great and the atmosphere was just right, all the ingredients you need for a romantic night out
Almost a perfect dinner...
Do not misunderstand me. The meal was absolutely great and we enjoyed every bite. The ambience is, well, cozy and the service attendive. The only fly in the ointment was a VERY noisy birthday party in the same room that made the evening a little unpleasant. That's what the 'almost' in my title is about...
But in the end this was not the restaurant's fault and I think the next time we will dine in a little more quiet ambience... And there will definitely be a 'next time'! :-)
Lovely menu and good food
Lovely menu and good food and atmosphere...rather neglectful waiter.
We had a nice girlie Saturday brunch here and everyone really enjoyed their meals. The ambience and service add to the ease and enjoyment of the visit. The mince on toast with crispy egg and all the desserts were the highlights! Will be going back again for sure.
Really enjoyed the meal I had this Saturday. The menu is one of a small few where I'd like to try everything on there. The food was superb: I had the prawn omelette to start and Cinnamon braised pork with pickled mushrooms for mains and finished off with cheese & truffles.
The service was also very good and the atmosphere relaxed.
Interesting and great flavours
Great food, interesting combination of flavours. We had the corn+feta waffle, new caledonian prawn and tea-smoked salmon benedict, all pretty great. Shame about the rendang minced beef on toast, which I found was just so so.
Best place for brunch
Located in a semi-courtyard, Modern Pantry is a small oasis in the City. Decor is similar to Ottolenghi, simple and clean; menu is in general creative and dishes very satisfying, especially the prawn omelette! Excellent service, beautiful place, perfect for Sunday brunch!
Excellent food, bad acoustics
My second visit to the Modern Pantry in a month and I was again impressed with the food. Friends loved it too and were grateful for the introduction. Creative flavour combinations that work very well without being overly fussy. Nice wines too and good selection of wine by the glass. Friendly and efficient service. However, still hope that management will do something to reduce the noise levels. A few soft finishings or foam underneath tables would go a long way to creating a less stressfull dining experience.
Good Food Nice Ambience
Good food, and relaxed ambience. Not cheap but good quality ingredients and healthy dishes.
Food not as good as usual
Smoked mackerel was not very tasty - or too many tastes! Usually excellent food here - the prawn omlette is delicious. Lovely place and fine service.
Brunch with the Lady Friend
After scouring the interweb for a suitable place to drag the Mrs for the best meal of the day, The Modern Pantry seemed to fit the mould for a brunch that extended a little further than a bacon and egg sarnie with a salad, evidence of the confused hour of the day this marvellous weekend activity this is. I could have said brunch 'with a twist', but I'd rather pretentiously drag it out. Upstairs, the scene is fresh, bright and homely, and likewise the consumption. The hot chocolate was a treat, the scrambled eggs with plantain and chorizo so too, and the raspberry pancakes something to truly savour. I'll be returning in no time. Highly bloody recommended.
Great food & service-unsteady table
Don't get me wrong...this place is definitely worth visiting. Great food and service in a chic establishment. The only thing I could say negatively about this particular dining experience was the fact that our table was very unsteady which meant it was a rather uncomfortable dining experience [no elbows on the table or it would have sent our food and drinks flying]. In hindsight I could've asked to be moved. I am being completely picky in this review.
I would definitely go back and would recommend it
The Modern Pantry
With no tablecloths and light painted tables and chairs The Modern Pantry offers a fairly casual dining experience. The food is thoughtfully put together and well presented, although the menu appears a bit overcomplicated and too many ingredients with too many obscure names are used. Our started salads were very fresh and interesting and the soup had a good depth of flavour. The venison was cooked to perfection. The steak which was said to be marinated in miso was somewhat overpowered by the marinade - a lighter touch would be better.
Overall it was a good meal in pleasant surroundings.
My Go-to Restaurant for Foodies
The Modern Pantry is very consistent with excellent service and fresh, innovative food. Make reservations in advance and request to sit downstairs where it is more lively.
Amazing place, really tasty
Amazing place, really tasty food, lots of options, friendly stuff
Lovely food great ambience
As always a very relaxed and pleasurable eating experience. Keep coming back and never fails to please.
Not as good as usual (didn't like the mackerel dish) but the prawn omlette was superb! Overall, a great place for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
I would come back again
Modern pantry does interesting and creative dishes which I love. Service was impeccable and ambience was great.
I booked this restaurant for a group of our Directors who were in London for the day. I had never heard of the Modern Pantry before but did some research online. The reports I had back from Directors were highly complimentary, food was excellent, good value for money and the service second to none. We would highly recommend this place and will book here again.
I had onglet steak and my companion had pollock in squid ink batter. The steak came with a delicious salsa some rather exotic chips and veg. The food was very good and served swiftly and graciously. We each had a glass of wine. We ate upstairs in the restaurant, small tables quite close together. I was telephoned three days before to check if I was keeping my reservation and received a further email reminder which, given it was a Friday lunch booking, was acceptable, though personally I don't much care for such reminders. Service was included in the bill which was quite reasonable for what we had. The glass of wine I had was fine up to the last mouthful which I spat back into the glass as it was full of the dregs of the bottle.
Great for a weekend brunch
Great for a weekend brunch date, really good selection of breakfast dishes and sides. There's also a great selection of wines and cocktails, my personal favourite was the rose mojito.
Lovely food & setting, fair service
We were seated upstairs for a lovely weekend brunch. Our server from the beginning seemed apathetic, but cordial enough. What was most disappointing about the service was the pace of the food - it was much too fast. We ordered some pastries to begin - they arrived before our drinks did. Upon removal of the pastry plates, the brunch entrees were immediately put in front of us. We were able to linger at the table after finishing our entrees and didn't feel rushed in that sense, but our food was served much too fast.
Possibly my 5th or 6th time visiting - consistently great food, value and pretty good service. I had family over from Paris, and they didn't know what to expect - they left feeling very satisfied and were saying they'll definitely come again when in London. As always the food and drinks were great - the staff weren't the best this time, a few of them seemed to be a bit apathetic - sure it was a Saturday afternoon, but come on - it's not like you're working at a Weatherspoons. We ordered two more sides in the middle of our brunch as the first round were amazing an were quickly eaten - unfortunately they weren't replaced as quickly but the waiter removed them from the bill. 9/10.
Girl's catch up
We ate here on a Sat night. It had a nice buzzy atmosphere without being too noisy so was good for a catch up. Food was great-interesting dishes, plenty of fish and veggie options, service prompt and reasonably priced for quality. I will defintely go back and would recommend it.
The perfect breakfast
I brought my parents here for breakfast while they were visiting London. I had gluten free toast with sautéed spinach, haloumi, and oven roasted tomatoes - all delicious! Coffee is very good, atmosphere lovely and relaxed, service spot on. My dad, a Bircher muesli fan, had his best bowl ever!
Saturday Lunch Family get together
Overall I was impressed with the main I had (Pollock) with the Riesling that was recommended to accompany the dish.
I thought the flavours complemented each other well apart from the pink vegetable that was in the main - I appreciate the dish required some vegetable to go with the rest of the main and it's purpose of it I think was to be used as a contrast to the creamy, mildly spiced sauce but it didn't quite work for me. Other than that though definitely above average food and enjoyable, lively, chatty ambience. The mix of old building with some modern interior components was also enjoyed. I thought the service could've been a bit quicker, however seeing as it was very busy I could understand the delay in the food reaching our table.
I very much enjoyed my brunch at Modern Pantry on Saturday. Environment is light and comfortable and nice to sit upstairs where less noisy and busy. Service was very responsive and informal so supported a more relaxed dining. Choice on the menu was lovely and I was hard pressed to choose. It had a nice selection catering for many tastes and wants. I had fried eggs with chorizo, slow roasted tomatoes and fried plantain. It was very tasty and a nice portion so I felt well satisfied on all counts. I also had a delicious smoothie with passion fruit, orange, banana and honey, with a nice balance of creamy sweetness and acidity. I very much look forward to returning to try other things on the menu. The one negative was slight smell of bleach.
Good setting for brunch
Charming place for brunch. Prompt service. Menu has the typical breakfast fare with a modern twist. Average prices. Recommended.
Really good inventive food,
Really good inventive food, reasonably priced for what you get. Service could be slightly slow at times, but overall a really pleasant experience.
Quality not quantity
Too many restaurants these days seem to think you must have enormous quantities of food on your plate to give you a good eating experience. At the Modern Pantry the aim seems to be a variety of foods with different tastes and textures. Definitely not a "Blow out!" You can eat a three course meal and feel content at the end without the sensation that you have eaten too much. I love it.
