Masterful Cooking, Engaging Service
My wife and I are restaurateurs who have been waiting a long time for a suitable opportunity to steal away from our restaurant to see what Matt Gillan is creating at The Pass.
We came with high hopes and an expectation of a perhaps a similar style food to that of Roganic. The kind of food that employs cutting edge techniques, but never looses sight of what the end result should be; flavour and texture. Matt and his team achieve that, and so much more. Each dish of the seven that we ate were a triumph, a surprise, a pleasure beyond words.
I won't detail any dishes because I don't think any of the surprise should be removed - you simply need to go.
Outside of my own restaurant ;-) it's rare that food and service moves me to such a degree.
Dinner at the Pass
We went for dinner at the Pass restaurant @ South Lodge Hotel, for a belated celebration of my Husband's birthday. The experience was amazing with a wonderful menu, the service was very good attentive without being over the top. The restaurant was lovely, though not overly comfortable perched at high tables and for those of us with shorter legs the rest as a stretch, Overall the experience was wonderful, not soemthing you could do too often as it is expensive.
South lodge experience
Superb food, ambience and service for an excellent price.
Great concept...done superbly!
Had a beautiful lunch celebrating mothers day. You have the great theatre of watching the kitchen, backed up by wonderful food. I found this to be great value for the food and drink we got. Would recommend going for the experience as well as the food alone, the hotel also seemed lovely. Very friendly staff throughout and got to meet the chef which topped off a great meal!
Perfect in every way. Would
Perfect in every way. Would normally have avoided several of the dishes on the tasting menu but all were superb. I wish I had booked a room and enjoyed the paired wines!
Amazing food and service in a great environment , we had the 8 course pass experience menu and every course was perfect. I can see a second star for the team at the pass within a few years . Keep up the good work
Great food, shame about the seating
The restaurant is a far cry from the plush surroundings of the remainder of South Lodge Hotel, and I was disappointed by the MacDonald's-like stool that I was perched on for the duration of our meal. The restaurant is certainly not designed for comfort or intimacy, but the food does not disappoint.
Opted for 7 course Pass Experience with Wine flight (£100 pp, with cheese board £7 or £10 supplement) and each course was a superbly cooked, artistically-presented, success.
Nothing was too much trouble for the waiting staff, even when I explained that my wife could not eat shellfish, and each plate of food and wine accompaniment was enthusiastically described to us prior to each course.
One for foodies, but not for daters.
Modern and Innovative
We had the six course Gourmet Experience Tasting Menu with the canapes, amuse bouche and optional cheese course. Every course was well presented, modern, fresh, flavoursome and intriguing. Some combinations are innovative but they all worked well together. Having a view into the kitchen and the calm and professional action gives confidence in what is to arrive next. The decor is modern and bright and the seating being at a different level from the norm gives a new perspective. Service was efficient and friendly -none of the stuffiness that sometimes comes with Michelin dining. If you choose carefully wine is fair price. We would recommend it for a different dining experience for a special occasion or more often if you can afford it!
Fine dining and fantastic service!
My 2nd visit to The Pass - and it didn't disappoint at all. Michelin starred fine dining tasting menu - choose from 3, 5 or 7 courses for £25, £35 or £55 - an absolute bargain! The hôtel is lovely, the staff are really attentive and friendly, can't praise them enough! Took my friends there and we all enjoyed the chef's table experience immensely. Oh, and the girls had the 7 course menu, the boys had 5 courses!
We wanted a meal to remember
We wanted a meal to remember for my wife's 60th birthday. The Pass was exactly what we were looking for - really good tasting food, with a level of detail in the preparation that you wouldn't get at a lower price, and the level of presentation you would expect. You can see the food being prepared from the table.
Tasty Taster Menu
I took my friend to The Pass for her birthday. We'd never had a taster menu before so we were very excited about what to expect. The Pass did not disappoint. The food was amazing and gentley took out of our comfort zone, providing tastes and textures we'd not experienced before. The service was also excellent. The staff knew the food well and were willing to answer all out questions. They also gave a nice intro to the ethos of the resturant when we sat down, which I found particularly interesting. Will definitely be going back!
Our second visit to 'The Pass', again it did not disappoint.
Great Food, Great Wine - outstanding service from 'all' the staff.
We shall return!!
wonderful food, perfect service
the Pass Experience dinner, at £75 for eight courses (£145 with a wine for each course), is superb value; diners sit at a row of tables next to the kitchen, so the calm professionalism fully visible; no dish less than excellent, the roasted scallop perfect as was the cod with razor clam and glorious trout in a pea cannelloni; the lamb rump and braised shoulder married delightfully with samphire and crisped gnocchi; the yuzu cream with poached pineapple was fresh, and a brilliant chocolate mousse with a heart of salted caramel; the wine was a perfect match; service, including several dishes delivered and explained by a chef, was professional and warm; the kitchen has an amazing range of gadgets, but for use not for show
South lodge pass experience
Arrive early for ore dinner drinks but was shown straight to table which was a little disappointing. The table wasn't in the heart of the kitchen but separated by glass and had a great view of pot wash only!
As a short person I found the seating extremely uncomfortable but the tall people in my party said it was really comfy for them. I Would have licked a footstool!
Food lovely and service impeccable. 9 course spread over 3 1/2 hours was very leisurely but would have preferred to have had time for pre dinner drinks and coffee in the more leisurely space and seating of Lounge areas. Also no pianist this time. :(
Overall lovely treat and great experience and would recommend
Excellent meal & service
A fantastic meal; the food was truly outstanding both in appearance & taste.
The staff were the best we have encountered in any of the fine dining restaurants we have visited.
The experience from the moment
The experience from the moment you enter the building is one that will stand out in your memory, the atmosphere is exciting and the concept of the pass restaurant is an idea that I thought was impressive, being from the catering industry myself if was nice to be able to watch other chefs work, it makes the experience personal and the food was outstanding, Matt Gillan is also a perfect gentleman and professional that adds that little extra to the dinning experience, would definitely return to dine again
It was the second time I went
It was the second time I went and it was again a wonderful experience. The food is superbe and the service is excellent!
10 out of 10 Matt !!
Another fantastic meal at The Pass..... the food and service just gets better and better....Thank you
Lunch At the Pass
All 3 of us were delighted with our lunch. The incredibly high level of service and delightfully personable staff made the whole experience from arriving at South Lodge to the moment we left wonderful. The food was spectacular and the surroundings beautiful. Thank you for making my Mums 70th so special.
Great night out
Four of us went out to the Pass for supper as a birthday celebration. We had the 8 course taster menu and thoroughly enjoyed our food. Two of us took the flight wine option and the other two chose a bottle of red and a bottle of white - both recommended by the sommelier. We had what looked like the best table in the house right next to the prep area. I never noticed the service and to me that means it was excellent. Overall we had a great night and will be returning.
Spectacular food, presented
Spectacular food, presented as a unique experience. An absolute treat for true foodies.
Excellent value lunch menu that doesn't fail to impress
In one word "Outstanding"! on par with Bo Innovation Hong Kong where I went last year.
Wonderful lunch experience
I took my girlfriend for lunch at the pass for our anniversary. We've always wanted to eat at a chefs table, but can't justify the cost, so the pass is the ideal compromise.
The ambience was relaxed, the waiting staff were attentive and efficient without being intrusive and the food was exquisite. We had the 'pass experience', a 7 course tasting menu combining some unusual flavours and incredible technical skill. The highlight for me was that the chefs deliver some of the courses directly to the table and are happy to chat about the food and how it's been prepared. For a Michelin starred restaurant the price was good value and i'd recommend it to anyone who likes good food and good service and wants something a bit different.
Wow The Pass is amazing!
Thank you to all the at the pass, everything was amazing. The hole experience from beginning to end was outstanding, we haven't stopped talking about it since. We have recommended the pass to everyone that appreciates great service and truly amazing food. My wife has told me that I am in the good books for at least a year, so worth every penny.
This was a great place that
This was a great place that has obviously spent a lot of time thinking about how to create a unique atmosphere.
The food was top-notch (as you would probably expect) - that great balance between unusual ideas (never heard of tonka bean before!) and great tasting food. (Which is sometimes sacrificed for quirkiness)
Uniqueness: all tables were chef tables (we were lucky enough to get the top chef's table so had an even better view!) And as a non-drinker I loved the non-alcoholic flight.
The staff were great and very friendly and made our meal very enjoyable. All in all, amazing! :)
How lucky were we?!
We took some friends for a celebratory meal knowing that this would be unsurpassable and of course it was. We were lucky enough to be the first diners to have the Surprise Menu which we had with the accompanying wine flight. It was a masterpiece! The food was sensational and every course was innovative, exciting and tasted fantastic. It simply cannot be beaten!
What gives this restaurant the edge is the friendly, helpful and professional staff, the relaxed atmosphere and, of course, the wonderful food. Matt Gillan deserves more than the one Michelin star he has richly deserved and we are sure that as his career progresses he will go far, this guy is sheer genius!
Amazing food; impeccable service!
Wonderful, out of this world experience.
Deserves two michelin stars, will definitely be visiting again in the near future.
The Pass is an experience!
The Pass is an experience not to be missed, elevating the idea of the 'Chef's Table' concept to the next level. Exquisite 'tasting' menus, (one of which is a surprise!), arouse the senses with the unusual combinations of food tastes and textures, visually its artwork on a plate. The elements of each dish are carefully crafted, the pear sorbet of one dish was particularly memorable. The only reason I didn't give the restaurant a clean sweep of 5 stars in each category is that when we arrived the menu I was given was incorrect, the ambience was a little stuffy and it took a while for our drinks and food order to be taken. The ambience did change as the evening progressed, the menu amended and the service that followed was impeccable.
Outstanding food and service!
We have been a number of times now and it just gets better and better every time.
The Pass is our favourite resterant and will certainly be going back.
It's a must for anybody!! Go check it out, you won't be disappointed.
Another fab meal at The Pass!
My 3rd visit to The Pass and it was as good as before! New menu but just as special as always. Went with my very good friend as a special pre birthday lunch treat for her. The tasting menu is fabulous - a tough choice between 5 or 7 course menu! Beautiful hotel with very attentive staff - they recognised me! - and great for any special occasion or treat. Planning my next visit now ;0)
Delicious, inventive for veggies!
I took my partner for her birthday, we are both vegetarian and chose the vegetarian 7 courses. The food was amazing and it is credit to the chef that such a range can be created without meat or fish. The flavours and textures of the dishes were so varied and proves that a vegetarian menu is as exciting, if not more inventive than the one with meat. Our main server, a lovely Italian, made sure that we thoroughly enjoyed the wine flight as well. The whole experience was really enjoyable, fun and unusual. It made a super birthday treat for my partner.
My wife and I had Sunday Lunch at The Pass to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary. The welcome was friendly and we felt immediately welcome and relaxed. We chose the shorter of the two, similar taster menus. We welcomed the non-pompous explanations of the different dishes. Advice on wine was sound and helpful. Each dish (those on the menu and the occasional extra) was very well presented and truly delightful to taste. The menu contained both innovative and creative elements, introducing us to some new ingredients and flavours. Service was attentive, friendly and efficient. And the arrival of the bill did nothing to remove the shine from a wonderful experience.
This was our second time eating here & yet again it was a culinary delight. The service is exceptional with a full explanation of each course & every question answered. Food was mouthwateringly delicious & the wines were divine. The wine flight was just brilliant. I love this Hotel & The Pass is a must if you have the chance.
Great food in a great venue
The whole experience was fantastic - the food, the service and the ambience of the restaurant.
Don't Pass on this one...
I hadn't been to lunch at the Pass for a year or so but this lunchtime visit for a special occasion did not disappoint - except in one respect. The imaginatively presented food and chic ambiance are outstanding. Very much the place for a celebratory event. Not a place for an intimate dinner for two as diners are elbow to elbow and in the heart of the kitchen but the experience is unique and we love it. The disappointment was that despite my reminding the staff as discreetly as possible on no less than three occasions during our visit that it was my partner's birthday, there was no recognition of this in any respect during our visit. I wasn't expecting State trumpeters but even a candle on a cupcake would have been better than nothing...
Attention to detail is what I feel sums up this restaurant experience. When you walk in someone takes your coat and takes you to the bar you are then escorted to your table. Lots of friendly smiling staff to help you with any queries. What we loved about the evening was the chefs bringing the food over themselves explaining what it was and how it was cooked. It is obvious they take the quality of the food very seriously and wish for you to have only the best. Amazing evening with lovely lovely food.
Nothing about South Lodge is ever average, and our evening on Saturday was certainly anything but. We were celebrating a 40th and were made to feel so special - including the chefs serving some of our courses and the sommelier matching the wines to our specific preferences - that the whole experience could not have been better.
Excellent value, Matt is a star!
Our second visit to The Pass was as truly wonderful as the first, Matt is a true gentleman and an artistic wonder with food.
Matt and Tomas cant go wrong!
Another fantastic meal at The Pass. A well deserved Michelin star - again - next step is two stars and Matt is well on the way. Thank you Bill & Emma
Don't pass iit by
A complete restaurant as a chefs table. The food is excellent with only tasting menus to chose from and very good service pitched perfectly between proper and friendly. Great touch with the dishes being brought to you and explained by the different chefs. If this was in London it would be much more expensive and difficult to get in. A great food experience which can be appreciated by all but is a delight particularly for us foodies.
An experience not to be forgotten..
We dined at The Pass restaurant during a Sunday lunch time. From the moment we walked through the door the service was extremely attentive. We were guided through the menu by our waitress and chose the 5 course menu for £35 whilst trying our canapés. The food was a nice range of meat, fish and two deserts! The waiters and our waitress ensured that we had everything we needed and that our glasses were always topped up throughout the meal. Dining at The Pass was quite an experience and the food a work of art, made more special by the chefs bringing the dishes out and being able to watch them being made. We will be returning to try the 7 course menu with a different wine matched to each course very soon!
outstanding dining experience
We enjoyed a leisurely lunch choosing the seven course menu accompanied with matching wines. The restaurant (small) is alongside the open kitchen. Each course is presented to you by the chef who describes the course. The food was wonderful. All staff exemplary.
We have been to Tristan's and loved it so I thought it would be nice to go somewhere you get to see the chef at work - amazing food and I could have watched the chefs for hours
Great Lunchtime venue and
Great Lunchtime venue and food at a reasonable price. Throughly enjoyed would recommend
What a way to celebrate your 30th!
A thoroughly enjoyable experience, quite expensive but you really do get what you pay for. It was fantastic to see the chefs cooking and preparing your food either directly or on the TV screen (dependent on which way your seat faced, although you do have swivel chairs and are encouraged to get a closer view). The chefs then serve you your food and explain what they have created and served you, their passion and knowledge was clear to see on all 10 courses! The waiting staff were able to ask all our questions and were attentive but not overbearing and their service was impeccable. I would love to dine there more frequently if only our bank balance would allow!
This was my first time at the Pass and we choose the 7 course tasting menu with wine. The food was delicious and seasonal accompanied with great wines. The service was first class with every course delivered and explained by one of the chefs.
Lunch on the way to Glyndebourne
A really interesting experience - imaginative cooking, attractive presentation with professional and friendly service. The wine flight was generally a good match and the whole event was a relaxing prelude before a short drive to Glyndebourne for the opera.
An Excellent Meal
Amazing food and ingesting wines, the most helpful and knowledgeable staff. A fascinating experience - very "kitchen table" but in a sophisticated manner. I would recommend this to anyone who loves great food.
One note the seating is fairly high but is accessible via a step - gives a great view over the pass!
Took my wife for lunch at The Pass, was a little worried whether the food would suit me. But amazingly I found myself eating food I would normally not eat; horseradish, artichokes, goats cheese and mustard. The way the food was cooked and presented was nothing short if amazing. The head waiter and chefs were extremely helpful and advised on each course as we received it (7 courses). And I enjoyed everyone as did the birthday girl!
I would recommend to anyone as a "dining experience second to none"
