Fantastic food, ambience less so
What fantastic food. Truly wonderful, although the portions are small.... Very much so, so don't go if you are partial to huge platefuls. We had three courses, but when you add the marvellous amuses-bouche, it certainly stacks up. The service was effective and efficient, by knowledgeable staff who clearly love their work. However, there was a party in the main dining room, and as a result, the rest of the diners were closely placed in a small room which, though charming, lacked atmosphere, which, given that most people were there for special occasions, was a shame. Notwithstanding that, it was a very pleasant evening.
Tasting menu is a must ,good value for 10 courses. A la carte tends to be a bit on the safe side and the portion sizes are very small even for this type of restaurant in fact not much larger than the tasting menu courses making the tasting menu a much better option.Staff are excellent but often seem slightly understaffed at times, plates are often slow to be cleared because staff are so busy. Overall would recommend as food is outstanding and worthy of 2 michelin stars.
Our first time to The Latymer, as it isn't local to our home, and what a wonderful experience it was. The food was both stunningly presented and beautifully cooked with an interesting and unusual set menu. The service was impeccable and the sommelier couldn't have been more charming and enthusiastic His recommendation of a Californian Pinot Noir, not what we would normally have chosen, turned out to be a perfect selection, as was his dessert wine recommendation. Having eaten in some of the best restaurants around, this one is certainly near the top of our list. We had a fabulous evening in beautiful surroundings and will definitely be back to try the tasting menu next time.
The Latymer, Pennyhill Park
The Latymer is for a very special occasion. Staff and service are perfect, being friendly and of the highest professional standard. All have encyclopaedic knowledge and clearly take pride in what they are serving. The sommelier was very helpful and informative. The food is absolutely out of this world - extraordinary combinations of flavours you want to last for ever. We had the10 course tasting menu and each plate was an art form. That sounds like a lot of food but it is not and if you like to come away from a restaurant feeling as though you couldn't eat another morsel this is not for you. This food is about presentation, art and sophisticated flavours. This was an experience to be savoured and treasured not just another meal out.
Dinner at The Latymer
Not having been to The Latymer before we were not sure what to expect and because the restaurant is within the hotel complex this is where the main activities are. There was no specific welcome from the restaurant and the building was very cold. However, the food was wonderful and very memorable. Each course of the three course menu was interspersed with very tasty and unusual dishes, there were dozens of ingredients used and not easy or practical to try at home. This made it a marvellous dining experience and all four of us didn't have a word of criticism, this is one of the reasons we like going out to eat. Service was efficient and not too over attentive. We would thoroughly recommend The Latymer for that special occasion.
Great food, great service,
Great food, great service, much better than some of the the reviews on this site would have you believe. Also, dont listen to the comments about not feeling like you have had enough to eat. We had the seven course tasting menu and yes the portions are small but when there are seven of them you wouldnt want it any other way! We left delighted and would go back tomorrow.
The care taken with the food, its preparation and its presentation is second to none, this really is fine dining at its best. We went for my wife's 40th - we wont wait for a special occasion next time!
Very good hotel restuaranrt
We chose this venue because it combined good hotel accomodation with a top restaurant. The quality of the food proved to be the highlight of our stay - the service was also excellent. In common with the hotel it was probably a little over priced but this means it has to be for a special occasion rather than a regular event.
Great set lunch
We had the three course set lunch and thought it was spot on. Lovely food, though sometimes missed out on seasoning, and loved the little in between dishes. Dessert menu was all fruit - would have liked to have seen some chocolate! But overall it was a fabulous lunch and very good value.
Great food, been there twice. Tried the 10 course tasting menu , delicious!! Tried the 3 course main menu as well, lovely food. The portion is a bit small for me. Still feel a bit hungry after the meal. All in all, this is a great restaurant!
Fantastic lunch 15th February 2013
Selected this restaurant as a Michelin starred restaurant we hadn't been to, to celebrate our anniversary. We chose a lunch sitting for several reasons but would add that it is a great way to experience Michelin starred dining at reasonable prices if you chose from one of the set menus. Neither my husband nor I could fault the food or the staff. The service was fantastic. Loved the decor too.
Excellent Flavour, Tiny Portions
Although the food tasted excellent and the service was great (only our coffees took some time to arrive), we were let down by the tiny portions. Even the main dish was a couple of mouthfuls!
I have been to few Michelin star restaurants and this has by far the smallest portions.
Also, the bread was a huge disappointment. It was dry and with no much flavour. But we had to eat it all as otherwise we would end up leaving hungry.
2 stars just
We have eaten in the Latymer room a few times, and always excellent however this time the staff seemed rushed, although still with a good understanding of the food. My food was as usual excellent however we understand michelin start food quantity is small portions but perfectly formed my wifes cod was very small ?
A sublime experience
A formal setting with a relaxed informal atmosphere. Service discreet but second to none. The Tasting Menu has to be on the list of 'must do' experiences. New flavours/combinations served with artistic flair and good taste. Despite many courses, one is not left feeling bloated - just satisfyingly satiated and the desire to return again for another evening. We looked at the Chef's Table and may well try this next time - view of kitchen service which would be fascinating.
Must try 10 Course Tasting Menu
I've read the previous reviews, but believe me, if you really want to experience the best of the best, you must try 10 Course Tasting Menu. It's our 2nd visit and on both occasions (1st on our engagement) we had 10 courses & ended with smile and happiness.
The details and flavours which go into each course is just fantastic. Potions are just right. Out of 10 courses, you'll get to enjoy 5 meals (gradually building up to the climax), followed by a delicious & delicate cheese menu which prepares you for the next 3 fantastic dessert menus. If you order coffee or tea, you get a sweet box with gorgeous chocolates which easily beat William Curley's expensive gift box any day and it's only £6.50! I'm counting days to visit there again.
Does not disappoint
This was our first visit back to The Latymer since it received its second star at the beginning of this year.
We took the lunchtime 6 course menu – a succession of small, delicious dishes with excellent flavour/texture combinations beautifully presented. The menu was well- constructed, using seasonal and local produce. The overall standard of cooking was very good indeed. The service was well-paced and staff was friendly, well-trained and helpful. The whole meal went very smoothly.
There are still a couple of minor things that I personally would improve, the breads and the coffee, for example, which I do not think quite match the quality of the rest of the food.
The Nature of Things
All six of my party, which included one allergic to Fish / one allergic to Sunflower seeds and one allergic to Nuts, were made to feel special and none missed out on experiencing incredible cuisine and excellent wines.
My wife and I went for her birthday on a Saturday evening. We selected the 10 course taster menu which was very good. My wife is veg and I also stated I eat meat but not beef, they catered for us really well.
The food is really innovative and good value for money. Service and ambience were also very good.
An Evening of Delights
I booked this as a special treat for my wife and I to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and we weren't disappointed.
Service was excellent, welcoming and attentive without being intrusive. We ordered from the 3 course menu which had great variety. The food was excellent and made all the more special as they took care to accommodate my wife's dietary requirements, in both the courses ordered and the delightful Amuse Bouche that preceded each course. Courses were small but we didn't leave hungry.
The decor and ambiance were perfect for a romantic evening.
Overall, while not an inexpensive night out, we enjoyed a wonderful evening and dining experience at the Latymer that will live long in the memory.
Excellent food, beautifully presented. Fantastic service and great wine selection.
The six of us all went for the 10 course taster menu. All of the courses were very good as you would expect, with a couple of truly outstanding dishes in among them. Personally, I preferred the food here to the taster menu at Le Manoir. Very personal venue, leaving the ambiance a little wanting, but overall, thoroughly recommend.
One of the best
Outstanding food. We had the 7 course set menu, the food was amazing. One of the best meals we have had, and can highly recommend.
High quality food, very well prepared and beautifully presented. Entremets added to the overall impression of a fine dining experience. Some reservations on the composition of one of the dishes but generally found flavours complementary. Flavours a little less intense than I would ideally like, but textures excellent.
I found serving staff very knowledgable and helpful but occasionally difficult to follow because of their strong accents and rapid delivery.
This is the third time I have eaten here in the past 10 months, and each time I am completely taken with Michaels culinary creations.
The smoked eel starter was up there with one of the most accomplished starters I have ever eaten - each ingredient working in perfect harmony, and the execution faultless.
The breadsticks in the initial amuse-bouche were a tad stale on this visit, and the butter was too hard to spread on the delicious homemade bread - but that was the only criticism I could level for a meal that delivered around 7 delicious courses including amuse-bouches, a champagne cocktail and tea/coffee all for £39.50.
This chef has the imagination and the technical capability to achieve 3 Michelin stars in the future,
Had a lovely meal on Saturday night, 10 coarse tasting menu was great !!
Took some time to come out which was nice as it gave you time to relax although I made the mistake of booking late 9pm so by the time we finished we feeling pretty tired. Good idea to get in around 7 ish I guess.
For a special occasion i couldn't have asked for more from our dining experience! The place was stunning and the service was exceptional, the staff couldn't have been more attentive, silver service to the highest standard. Their knowledge of the 10 course taster menu was outstanding and they made us both feel very special, we loved every minute of it
An enjoyable lunch
Food beautifully presented with intense flavours. A pity food explanations was not given in a slightly slower pace of speech so that we could truly understand what we were about to taste? Perhaps further written explanations might help or staff could improve their diction ?
Amazing place; stunning food.
Amazing place; stunning food. Great for every occasion.
Excellent food and service all round. Setting was amazing, staff were excellent and attentive. Food was very tasty and
An excellent meal with excellent
An excellent meal with excellent service, this restaurant is well deserving of it's Michelin Stars.
We were celebrating our 9th
We were celebrating our 9th Wedding Anniversary and decided to go to the Latymer. We were not disappointed, the three course lunch for £34 each almost becomes a 6 course with some excellent Amuse vouches in between the courses.
Always a delight
We went there to celebrate my fiance's birthday and as usual the food, experience, and service was fantastic. We always have tasting menu and this time we went for accompanying wine selections. The wine selected for each course was just perfect. I've never tasted rabbit so tender, Stilton so silky and served almost like an ice cream with crunchy walnut biscuit... the amazement just goes on and on. Each course is just beautiful to look at, smells incredible and sensational to eat, The Latymer never fails to impress us.
Best food I have ever tasted
We went on a Tuesday for a birthday meal. Went for the 10 course tasting menu and every mouthful was an amazing explosion of delicious flavours. The venue is in a lovely setting and the staff were very warm & accommodating.
Overall one of the best meals I have had what a wonderful birthday present.
Food great drinks grated
Excellent food, really high class, wonderful flavours and good value but if one of a party of two is a non or modest drinker then lack of half bottles on wine list means ordering wine by the glass (100ml only). Our drinks bill (2 glasses rose champagne, 1 glass white, 2 glasses red plus bottle still water) was 15% more than the food. Wines were good, appropriate but not exceptional. On balance though the drinks cost took the shine off a great lunch. Perhaps not enough to put one off going again but maybe the restaurant should think about the choice available.
A perfect night
It was a very lovely dinner, the food fantastic, interesting combination of flavour. I recommend this restaurant.
The food was outstanding, very inventive, beautifully presented and of the 10 courses, 9 were wonderful, 1 just so-so. Pretty impressive as there was no choice
The only drawback is that because it's pricey, the restaurant was full of couples and a little on the quiet side, so the atmosphere was slightly rarefied. Perhaps a little bit of music would have helped. I felt that other diners could overhear our conversation and felt obliged to talk rather softly.
The loos are a long way from the restaurant!
Otherwise perfect and I will be back
I obtained a last minute booking for this restaurant and was dining out on my own. I was made to feel very welcome and was well looked after throughout the whole experience. I opted for the 7 course tasting menu with matching wine and each course plus wine was professionally presented to me by friendly and knowledgeable staff, the portion sizes were just about right and each contained an absolute delight of flavours, textures and colours. The atmosphere was relaxed for what would be considered quite a formal occasion and the restaurant itself was warm, inviting and grand yet with a homely feel. I would highly recommend the Latymer and feel is it worthy of its numerous awards. I will be taking my partner there in the near future.
A perfect evening
Heard about the Latymer in passing so decided to take a peak at the site, was immediately impressed & booking was a breeze. As my husband & I were coming from Australia we wanted a perfect 13th anniversary dinner. From the moment we stepped out of the taxi we felt like royalty. Staff at both the hotel & The Latymer were so gracious. Our waiter was the best we've had,the sommelier knowledgable & the floor manager obliging. From the ambiance to the food,it was the perfect evening. The food was presented beautifully & it was all so divine. Every detail was exceptional, but what really made our night was the staff, couldn't ask for better service & they were humble. Highly recommend The Latymer to all, only wish I didn't live so far away.....
2 Michelin Stars for a reason!
I took my partner to The Latymer for his birthday. Pre-dinner drinks in the Ascot Bar with a live pianist. Beautiful decor and great service/ drinks. The restaurant itself wasn't over-flashy which was nice, more traditional decor which was lovely. We had a 7 course set menu and it was stunning. My favourites were the veal (which I don't usually like), the lamb (perfect!!), the popcorn dessert and the pistachio dessert. It was all beautiful. The staff were very nice and attentive and it really was first class service. We didn't stay in the hotel, but we wish we did!! It looked beautiful and every inch a 5 star hotel. All in all a fabulous evening and can't wait to return. Definitely recommend!!
The atmosphere is formal but
The atmosphere is formal but intimate. We arrived early but were shown straight to our table. We had the 10 course taster menu - each impeccably and stylishly presented and well explained by our attentive waiter. The highlights were the salted cod & scallop, the cassoulet of clams and the suckling piglet! We also chose the wine flight with our meal. Ali, the sommelier, was a gem - presenting us with some fantastic wines that complemented the courses and taking the time to explain each one. He was attentive, enthusiastic and charming.
We chose the Latymer as it was a special occasion for my wife and I and it is almost on our doorstep. It is not cheap - but it was a culinary treat and we were made to feel special by all the staff.
I took my wife here for our 20th wedding anniversary and I could not have been better pleased with the choice. The staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and courteous throughout our visit. The food is as you would expect from a two star restaurant, completely outstanding!
We both had a fantastic evening and will be back.
Best restaurant in Surrey
Cosy venue in a very nice but large country house hotel. Proper but very friendly service which is very good. Food quite excellent and the best restaurant in Surrey. Tasting menu only which is great for foodies. A great place for a special occasion too.
An occasion to remember
The evening was a family outing to celebrate a fiftieth birthday. We had the 10 course tasting menu which was absolutely superb. The depth of flavours, variety of courses and attention to detail in presentation was exceptional. In addition, the staff were very attentive and professional, adding to the pleasure of the occasion. The wine list was extensive, which meant the recommendations from the extremely knowledgeable sommelier were very welcome - and superbly matched to the food.
Overall an exceptional dining experience which we will remember for a long time.
Pricey, but very well worth it!
Had a very enjoyable meal, really magical food with wonderful taste & flavors hitting the taste buds, if Micheal Wigmall were too change his job I am sure he would also be a wonderful artist.
All aspects of the evening were most enjoyable & look forward to our next visit
