We had a lovely lunch as a treat for my husband's 60th birthday with a glass of champagne to start, 3 course lunch and a bottle of wine. As always the staff and atmosphere was excellent. It is a nice peaceful haven in the middle of the city.
We continue to be impressed
We continue to be impressed with the quality of food - it is always well prepared, well served and delicious. Thank you again!
Booked table as a surprise for my husbands birthday the menu choice was excellent all local produce and food was delicious, a little disappointed a service charge was already included on a bill for two people but would have left a tip for the waiter as service was good.
Fantastic English Fayre
Food was uniformly excellent. A good selection of local real ale to accompany it, to boot. On the expensive side but definitely worth it.
Perfect celebratory meal.
We dined here 10 months ago to celebrate our engagement and had such a good time we decided to book here again after our wedding to celebrate the start of married life.
The food is outstanding. Perfectly cooked, full of flavour, and beautifully presented. The fact that it is all local produce makes it all the more enjoyable.
The service is superb. Polite but informal with out being overly familiar.
All in all one of the most outstanding restaurants in the North East and one we will be back to often.
Excellent food, great ambience,supe
Excellent food, great ambience, super friendly efficent staff
Excellent food and service in a lovely welcoming environment
An all round good experience
Lovely restaurant with great character and a nice ambience. Original stone walls and medieval look tables and chairs give it a nice atmosphere - a pleasant change from the contemporary, minimal style so popular now! Menu choice very good (lots of gluten free choices as well) and food is delicious. A very pleasant and cosy experience on a horrid cold rainy night. Beautiful in the summer, nice lawns etc outside. A couple of steps up to toilets so not suitable for wheelchair users but level access to lower floor of restaurant. Would highly recommend.
We had a great time here dining as a family, my teenagers loved the food and so did we. I quite wanted to lick my plate clean.
First Visit for our friends
We enjoyed a lovely lunch with our friends who had not been to Blackfriars before and as we had travelled on the bus we could enjoy a glass of wine as well . They loved it and we will all come again.
A lovely evening
Went for my other half's birthday meal. The service was quick and friendly and the waiter had time for a little chat as he was doing our bill which was lovely. We had the duck pate and fishcake to start, both of which were delicious; although if I was nitpicking I think a bigger portion of fishcakes would be very welcome - they are so good!
For mains one of us had the Rib eye steak and the other had the lamb rump; again these were both very tasty and we were particularly impressed with the steak.
Finally, although we struggled to fit them in we had the plum & frangipane tart and singin' hinnies for dessert. Both of these were absolutely divine.
I really enjoyed the overall feel of the restaurant and will definitely be returning very soon.
Fantastic as always!!!
We had our Wedding reception at Blackfriars in 2008 and this was our first visit since then.
The staff were friendly and we felt looked after. The food was amazing with a massive Gluten Free selection which I found great. Having Coeliac Disease means we don't eat out too often due to a few episodes of cross contamination. However, I can safely say I was fine after eating at Blackfriars.
We will definitely be back and we will not be leaving it so long between visits again.
You deserve a treat
Hidden behind Newcastle's China Town is a fabulous eatery. Small enough to be cosy but large enough to cater for larger parties. The menu is limited, but very good quality. Wines are in abundance but don't forget to try the Alnwick Rum.
Everything was outstanding, we were five mature girls in Newcastle for a shopping weekend, we had pre-booked this restaurant and was not disappointed. The staff were friendly, courteous, informative. The menu was extensive with advice what wines went well with each meal. If we ever went back to Newcastle would definitely eat here again. A real gem.
60th Birthday Celebration
We booked Blackfriars for 21 of us to celebrate my husbands birthday. The staff greated us on arrival and were very efficient, friendly and courteous. The service was excellent and people served efficiently no waiting for anyone (we did take everyones choices as people always forget their order). The room was lovely and although shared with another party this didn't distract from our enjoyment. At the end of the evening the staff also booked taxis for all of us they turned up on time overall an excellent night. Oh yes and the food was great!!
A lovely lunch
A great Sunday lunch, excellent food and superb service.
Very good atmosphere,very good food
I would be really hapy to try more main courses in this restaurant.
I went there with a frient for the first time and both the stake and the gnocchi were really good, but not perfect.
The deserts were very good as well.
First time in blackfriars!
The food was out of this world, the atmosphere was relaxing and romantic, had a wonderful time, would definately go back!
As always Blackfriars did not disappoint. The staff were attentive, polite and efficient, and we all ordered from the set menu which gave us a fantastic value meal that was superb quality. Blackfriars is a five star restaurant that is not pretentious and is a pleasure to have dinner in.
One of my favourite restaurants
One of my favourite restaurants in Newcastle. They change the menu for each season so there is always something new when I visit and I am never disappointed. I had Roasted North Yorks Wood Pigeon with Fois Gras, Chard and Fig Chutney. It was perfectly cooked with a fantastic blend of flavours and textures to excite the palate. I'd thoroughly recommend this to anyone who enjoys good food.
Value in the heart of Newcastle
Always good value and excellent food, service unobtrusive but very efficient. A quiet haven away from the bustle of a busy city, but only a few hundred yards from the city centre.
I would always recommend this restaurant for its good food and value.
I have chosen this restaurant
I have chosen this restaurant from its online credentials as well its history for a reunion meeting with friends and colleagues (now in their 70s to 80s) from my years in the School of Physics and Geophysics of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne after many, many years ago. I surely wasn't disappointed; it was a lovely place to celebrate with a great ambience and excellent food.
Best steak I've ever tasted! Everything was good about the food experience here. If I had to be critical it was that the main course took a while to come out. However, the staff explained why and gave us complementary coffee. Would reccommend to anyone.
Very good food and outstanding value for set menu valid all weekdays. Good service. Happy staff. Very easy atmosphere.
We've been meaning to eat here for ages and finally got round to it. The food and service were outstanding, as was their consideration to a rare allergy that I have. We had three courses and each one was delicious. The venue itself was lovely and cosy on a cold night and the staff were attentive without being overbearing. A wonderful place and we'll definitely go back.
I have lived in Newcastle all my life. This is considered one if the best. Read on..
I went for my girlfriends 26th birthday. Upon reception in the beautiful dining room we were served with a complementary amuse Goule of chilled Beetroot and Horseradish soup. Divine.
We both ordered the Scallops for starters. The were perfectly cooked and the hazelnut salad provided a crunchy delight to the soft sweet scallops.
Next arrived my super rare pigeon. The pigeon was delicious and the pan fried Fois Grois was devine. The salmon with rope grown mussels was a highlight on my girlfriends plate.
Is this place expensive? Yes. Is the food, service, wine exceptional? Yes.
For special occasions only but could not fault at all. Exceptional on every level
My husband and I had a lovely pre theatre meal at the restaurant. The waitress and waiter were very attentive and the food was delicious. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys an interesting menu that is reasonably priced, with a lovely atmosphere!!
very relaxed atmosphere and
very relaxed atmosphere and ambience. Service was excellent, and the food largely good, some very good. short distance from city centre and station. reasonable value for money and I will probably go again.
Good food, good service, good atmosphere - would definitely go back again
Food was outstanding, the stickey toffee pudding with salted carmel sauce hands down the best thing I have ever eaten.
My friend and I enjoy fine dining and this restaurant did not dissapoint. Food and wine excellent quality.
I would recommend this establishment for all occasions.
Only one observation, seating uncomfortable after a while but fits with the authenticity of the surroundings.
I will visit again next time I am in Newcastle.
Very good food in great surrounding
The building itself and the interior are fantastic. Really liked the place.
The food was excellent, except for rather dry, over cooked steak.
Service was attentive and friendly, although item we requested never did appear.
Good welcome from front of house, on first impressions very cosy and fairly busy. Service was attentive without being over the top, Our table was situated at the back corner of the restaurant, however half way through meal one of our party became aware of an uncomfortable draft from a door behind us which had a curtain/drape covering it, this led to her having to wear her jacket for rest of the evening. Putting this aside, the food was super, all our party had delicious mains and deserts, the portion size was perfect. We will definately return to Black Friars and have since recommended it to friends, work colleagues and family, who asked how our experience was.
Pre Theatre Meal
This was the first time my wife and I had dined at Blackfriars. We booked after viewing the menu online. We both ate from the set menu which was available from 5.00 to 7.00pm. We both had a 3 course meal for the fixed price of £18.00. The only word to describe the food was excellent and at the price fantastic value for money. The service was also excellent and we had no trouble in making the show which started at 8.00pm. We will definitely be returning.
Enjoy! A real find
A pleasant meal from a menu offering a range of choices with good service and overall good value. Our first seat at the rear of the room near a curtianed off area was disappointing but we were moved without fuss to adjacent table. Good atmosphere as the restaurant filled up. Will go again and would recommend
A great experience!
Really enjoyed our meal here. A well presented restaurant with great service and a menu full of very tasty food that harks back to proper northern grub thats well presented and served.
Staff were respectful, curtious and efficient. A mild complaint from another table was swiftly dealt with, full of apologies and the reaction was over and above what the customer expected and they left satisfied.
Next time in Newcastle, Im going back!
First Time Visit
This was our first visit but it won't be our last. The food was fantastic and the front of house staff were very professional and attentive without being obtrusive.
A good choice!
Welcoming atmosphere and staff. Good choice of dishes. Food was high quality and well presented. service pleasant and efficient. . A first choice for any return visit to Newcastle.
Great restaurant with a varied local menu and a good wine selection with helpful staff and a great atmosphere.
Very good value
The lunchtime and early evening set menu offers excellent value for money with good choice and decent portion size.
Service is attentive and friendly. The historic aspect of the building adds to the experience,
Blackfriars provided the perfect setting for our anniversary dinner. The food was exquisite and the wine fabulous - the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable.
It's now our favourite place to dine!
Simply the best
Blackfriars is an absolute gem. Whatever the occasion, you can't go wrong. Plenty to choose from for all taste buds from fussy kids to gourmets, cooked with love and imagination, and of course it's all organic produce from the region, including their own garden and allotment). Fantastic historic site. Super friendly and efficient service too!
Food delicious, staff inviting - naughty little surcharge!
Great food, great restaurant, great time!
Definitely worth trying and we will most definitely be going back
Fantastic dinner, will be back
we had a great dinner on Saturday night, the steak was amazing as was he the wine and the atmosphere. there's such a wide selection of restaurants in Newcastle but this one is definitely worth a try.
Best meal I've ever had
A real treat of a restaurant, brought my father here for his birthday. We both had the steak which was not only beautifully cooked but also a lovely cut of meat. The wine recommendation was also terrific, a lovely accompaniment to the meal. For desert we had sticky toffee pudding which was phenomenal, coffee also very good.
Service was great, fast and efficient, though a little devoid of personality. Despite being busy the atmosphere was very pleasant. Overall a brilliant experience and though it was expensive, for the quality of the food i would have paid double.
still the best in toon
two great sunday lunches we both loved the brocolli cheese, stunning. Stickey toffee pudding still the best ever. Lush wine it all really lifted our day
Girlie lunch with my daughter
My daughter and I had a very enjoyable lunch on Monday 2nd December following a hectic morning of Christmas shopping. We chose to have the Christmas Lunch menu which offered a varied choice of starters, mains and desserts. My daughter had the beef and I had the pheasant. Both were tasty and served with seasonal fresh vegetables.
Blackfriars is an excellent restaurant for couples and families with good food and attentive service.
A great experience
Our group of five ladies dine out on a regular basis, this occasion was our Xmas night out. We all like good food and the opportunity to catch up and have good chat in convivial surroundings. This is exactly what we got on our visit to Blackfriars. It was easy to book, tbut I actually had to chnage the booking later to an earlier start time. That was no trouble to the staff who were extremely accomodating. One of our party was then delayed on the night, but again, even though they were busy, it was all sorted with ease.
Service, food and atmosphere was faultless. A lovely experience
