Ideal for lunch
'Lunch' isn't a category available for recommendation on this site, but it is what we had, and it was both excellent food and excellent value. With real linen table cloths! About £77 for 3 people, including wine for two, and the service charge. We were not chased off our table although we lingered into the afternoon. We had travelled from Edinburgh and Harrogate, and it was worth the effort. It was my second visit for lunch, and I shall certainly go again.
For an evening dinner in Newcastle, it would be hard to beat Cafe 21. From the friendly welcome to the selection of food, to the quiet efficient service, this makes for a great evening out. I particularly like the option of a carafe of wine to share, rather than a glass each - less than a bottle but more thana single glass; a clever idea, and appreciated by the driver!
Meal for 4
We came to the restaurant with friends for an evening meal. The service was superb and we all enjoyed our meals. We had no complaints at all.Well done!!
It is always fabulous here, in all the years I have visited Cafe 21 I have not ever had a poor meal!!!!
Received with a welcome, sat
Received with a welcome, sat in the quiet area and looked at the cocktail menu, I opted for the special and hubby had a glass of champagne, which were from the restaurant who had had a champagne tasting session that morning. The restaurant was full and had a lively atmosphere. All staff were attentive and knowledgeable regarding the wine and dinner menu. The starter of foie gras was substantial in size - very good value and the goujons with asain dressing was crispy and with a zingy chilli dressing was refreshingly light. We opted for the sharing of the Cote de Beouf which was served with 4 choices from the veg/side dishes. The beef was cooked to perfection, and had been sourced locally. All of the vegetables were fab
We have eaten at Cafe 21 and
We have eaten at Cafe 21 and indeed all of the group's restaurants and cafes and have never been disappointed. Staff are well trained and enthusiastic, produce is carefully sourced and realistically priced and there is great effort to innovate and to do things right. Wines, beers and other drinks are interesting. All very uplifting and how much better to seek out one of these well run places to eat and drink rather than the run-of-the-mill.
My husband and I were in Newcastle to take our daughter to Uni , I had found this Restaurant on Trip Advisor. It is well situated in the Quayside area. It was welcoming and inviting in terms of the decor and ambience. I ordered the Souffle, which was lovely, my husband the scallops and chorizo. The latter was on the small size and whilst delicious, was too small a portion to warrant the cost. However his steak and my grilled Halibut were very good. Thank you
Café 21 Does nOt Disappoint
A warm welcome, a great à la carte menu plus a choice of specials that included Surf 'n' Turf with half a lobster and efficient but friendly service made for another convivial evening at Café 21. The spicy scallop starter was a winner and the venison main dish was delicious. The Crème Bruleé had a good crack to it, the only slight disappointment was the a repetative cheeseboard with a sugarbowl of shop-bought crackers and a slice of bread accompanied by grapes which were almost past their best.
This was our first visit. The staff were helpful and courteous, the food cooked and presented beautifully. Definitely worth another visit and would certainly recommend it to our friends.
It is unusual for me to be
It is unusual for me to be presented with a menu that has so many dishes I would like to eat. Normally there would be one or two but at Cafe 21 I want to eat just about everything! The food is some of the best produced in the NE. The service was impecccable and having a new born baby in tow fazed the staff not one bit. Good wine list too with some wines of excellent value bottles.
Great use of local ingredients.
Great use of local ingredients. Fantastic deserts.
Trip to Newcastle
While recently visiting Newcastle we had the most wonderful meal at café 21. The food was exceptionally good, as was the attentive service. The restaurant has a lovely lively ambience and the cocktails are simply divine! I would most definitely recommend this restaurant and will certainly be returning in the future.
overall very pleasant good food nicely served
very slow coffee
Another great lunch
The 3 course £20 special set lunch continues to provide excellent value for money. Menu choices & food quality exceptional.
Went on Saturday night with my mum and best friend before my boyfriend's gig and got the early evening menu. 3 outstanding courses for £21. Brilliant staff who are friendly and accommodating and lovely cocktails. Will definitely be back!
Overall a good dining experience
Overall a good dining experience with excellent quality well prepared food & a good choice of wines. Serving staff attentive & pleasant.
Downsides are that when busy the restaurant can be very noisy making it hard to hear others (it's a large rectangular room that sound echoes around).
I went there on Sunday night
I went there on Sunday night for pleasure and Tuesday night for business. It's always a great experience and the food never disappoints. Just wish I lived in Newcastle as it would definitely be a regular haunt and I would love to be able to attend the special tastings and events.
Great food Outstanding Service
Just what the title says. Would recommend to anyone interested in great food and quality service.
My favourite restaurant in Newcastle! Service always impeccable, food always delicious and at £20 for 3 courses why would you ever want to go to a regular pub serving mediocre food? Love the decor, love the drinks, love everything about it this restaurant.
Went for evening meal with my wife for her birthday. Enjoyed very much, good food well presented, wine reasonably priced and served a correct temperature. Nice surroundings and very good service.
Drawbacks include: not many couples dining, mainly larger parties therefore very noisy, not the best selection of veggie dishes (but good fish choice) . We paid nearly double what we would have paid in a nice restaurant in Morpeth or Bedlington. Was it really twice as good? Overall a good experience which I would repeat and recommend to others.
Service charge included so I did not see any reason to leave a tip.
Outstanding food and drink as always- grilled calves liver once more was perfect and duck was similalrly on top form. Wine and cocktails v good and we stayed past closing time to accommodate us completing drinks and food.
Business is served
Wanting a change from my usual businss lunch habitat, I chose Cafe 21 for a meeting with my bank manager not to impress but just for a change. Upon arrival I was greeted by Manager Pierre, who I know from previous haunts and was delighted to see such a "friendly" face once again. Food, wine and service were all excellent making it a thouroughly good choice for the occassion. There is no hesitation on my behalf to recommend this venue for such meetings.
We booked Cafe 21 for a celebration as my partner and I have just become engaged. The atmosphere was excellent and what we like (we dont like quiet restaurants), the staff were very friendly and made us feel welcome right from the start to the end of our meal. The food was top notch and we both really enjoyed our meals. Only slightly down side was we booked for 8pm and we were finished our meals not long after 9pm, it was a bit quick for our liking, however, we did not order a desert and it did not spoil our night and we were not rushed away after the meal. We would dine again here no problem.
Visited cafe 21 for a birthday meal, food was superb and service great. One of the pricier restaurants in Newcastle but worth dining from the a la carte menu if you have a reason to celebrate. Set menu also looked great value.
Been here about ten times over the last year (including just after Christmas when there were 22 of us) and the food, service and ambience has always been excellent. I am always impressed by the high standards that the restaurant sets itself as the normal standard!
Exquisite food and service
We had a heavenly Sunday lunch at Cafe 21 on Sunday. Beef and lamb were both cooked to perfection with accompanying veg. Wine was also good and reasonably priced. Highly recommended
Top Foodie, but not snooty
Cafe21 is one of the very best restaurants in Newcastle, if not the UK.
I travel a lot and one of the things that makes it worthwhile is being able to visit places like this. Food is fantastic, prices are very good, it is clean, it is smart, it is modern.. But is not up-itself. Everybody should eat a meal here once- their early-evening menu is particularly good value for money. I have eaten here many times and the next time I return to Newcastle I will unquestionably eat here again. Outstanding.
Every item from beginning to end was special. From the cheese & spinach soufflé to the grilled garlic chilli scallops, pink venison, delicious steak - every flavour combination was a delight. Would highly recommend this restaurant for special occasions as slightly pricey ( at approx £55/ head for 3 courses with wine).
Slick, smart but maybe little cold?
I don't mean under heated! It's smart, food's very good ( it's quite expensive including the wine list, though the set meals are good value): I just find it so smart and efficient-seeming that it lacks a feeling of warmth or real welcome. Hard to explain: we felt like part of a system, not real, valued customers.
I had been to Cafe21 previously
I had been to Cafe21 previously with business colleagues and on that basis came back with my wife. The service was outstanding - all the staff were friendly and very attentive (but not intrusive). The restaurant had a great atmosphere (Friday evening) and the food was very good. It wasn't cheap, but we really enjoyed our evening.
The restaurant was pleasant service very good nothing rushed we took as long as we needed to choose our food. The scallops were excellent as was the vennison and the game pie. One of our party had the pork and was a little disappointed. Desserts were varied although the apple and calvados parfait was disappointing. I had been looking forward to the bolivian chocolate with salted caramel which wasn't available although I accept menus cannot stay the same. Wine was affordable the mixers for the spirits were expensive.
Brilliant Food !
Booked for an early evening meal and was blown away by the quality of the food and the whole ambience of the restaurant. Will definitely be paying another visit !!
Fantastic Birthday Meal
I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, without a hesitation.
Undoubtedly the best restaurant in Newcastle, fantastic food, service, atmosphere.
what a lovely Birthday meal :)
Superb food in formal but relaxed surroundings. I enjoyed all three of my choices, the chilli salt squid, followed by fish market stew which was outstanding and finishing off with the syllabub with fig compote. Service was very good. Prices reflect the high quality of food on offer.
Lovely romantic meal
We chose to dine during the early evening menu and the food was absolutely beautiful and great value for money. The service was as you'd expect from a top restaurant, very tentative but non intrusive. Lovely atmosphere for special occasions and would recommend to all! Can't wait to go back.
Wonderful meal at Cafe 21
We are both very passionate about food and have been to cafe 21 a number of times now, we did not hesitate to choose it for a special occasion. Great from start to finish, excellent menu, lovely service, a birthday candle and they even let me take the beautiful rose from the table home. Can't wait til next time.
What an excellent find! A
What an excellent find! A great introduction to Newcastle's fine dining scene.
We all had a thoroughly enjoyable and very delicious early evening meal. Very reasonably priced too.
Already looking forward very much to our next visit....
Cafe 21 remains the standard
Cafe 21 remains the standard yagainst which to measure other restaurants particularly in the North East. It never loses the plot. Good food, good value, great staff
I choose Cafe 21 because the food, service and atmosphere are consistently good
I have never had a poor meal at this restaurant
Early evening dinner is superb value
Staff are always friendly, attentive and knowledgeable
Just keeps getting better...
Warm welcome, efficient and friendly service, great food - all Cafe 21 staples. The set menu is becoming more adventurous - desserts in particular have reached stellar standards in the last month or so. Incredible Cardamom infused chocolate truffle - best pudding I've eaten anywhere in the last few years.
The attention by the staff was second to none, the also was excellent, I had the fillet steak which was the best in my 68 years of eating. The whole experience was impressive.
The only downside was the noise levels of other diners I the restaurant( something which cannot be avoided unfortuneately.)
Wonderful! We love this restaurant.
Our table was being prepared when we arrived and we were immediately guided to a table in the bar area where we chose a lovely bottle of Pinot Grigio and our starter ( pate) and main ( rib of sirloin for two). Then through to the full restaurant. The atmosphere is always vibrant and this occasion was no different. The buzz of people enjoying excellent food and service, and each other's company. The complimentary bread was superb, as always, as was the pate. The steak came with a choice of two sides ( four in all) and was cooked to perfection. We couldn't finish the steak but the staff were more than willing to pack the surplus up to take home, but not before we took our time to soak up the atmosphere, and the delicious wine!
What an excellent night we
What an excellent night we entertained a friend in the catering business and he was impressed to. Fish excellently cooked and presented, good wine, what more can you ask for. The decoration is good not too harsh so for one like me who has some hearing loss I could enjoy a full conversation without restriction.
As always our dining experience
As always our dining experience at Café 21was special. From arriving to departing the staff were attentive but not in an overbearing way. I have yet to find anywhere that can better the olives at Café 21, they are to die for. My husband ordered from the early evening menu and the Carbonade of Beef was exceptional, I had Calves Liver from the main menu which melted in the mouth. There is a wide selection of wines available and many at a reasonable price. I would recommend anyone to go and try the Café 21 experience as they won't be disappointed
superb celebration lunch
This was a special celebration meal and fulfilled our expectations in every way. Food and service were of the highest order. We live at a distance but would certainly make a point of eating in this restaurant on a return visit.
excellent all round
First visit to cafe 21. Ate from the early evening menu whixh was v good value with good range of seasonal dishes. Good attentive service with a smile; attentive but not overbearing or pretentious. Also wine was very good for the money as some good restaurants are over priced for the quality. Only complaint was the waiter did not stop a guy serenading his date on the table next door with some bad singing......not bad for the only negative
Ideal start to the evening
Great value offered by earlybird menu - small portions but lighter if going out afterwards and clearly very popular for Saturday shoppers - pricier full menu offers more choice and fabulous cooking
My wife and I were going to
My wife and I were going to Newcastle and booked for lunch after seeing Cafe21 listed in the Sunday Times top restaurants section. We decided to have the lunchtime 3 course fixed price (£20pp) menu which had a good choice. We both had different dishes for each course all of which were superb with a special mention for the smoked haddock starter which was fantastic. The standard of food was exceptional and the service was v good with no percieved lack of care even though we chose the cheaper options (which does happen a lot in some places). Would and have reccomended this place to others and we will return.
Yum Yum again
Great buzzing lively atmosphere. Good seasonal cocktails pre-dinner. Had a repeat of the shared Cote de Beouf, just as good if not better than last time, succulent and well flavoured due its hanging time - so very consistent. Staff effecient and friendly. Food very attractively presented. The desserts looked lovely but unable to manage one - pleasantly stuffed! but the staff still presented Hubby with a scoop of ice-cream with a lit candle in it - everybody say aah
Lovely for my hubby's birthday treat.
Great place and outstanding value
The food and restauant staff are both outstanding. Great value for the price. The ambience and decor of the resturant is very welcoming. Great place to dine for all occassions.
